I love that she did this "requiem". I was trying to figure out who is a requiem for up until the end, then it really comes across to me that she's (with a good deal of sadness) saying goodbye to the little girl that has had to become someone more powerful. The final words I can picture her dropping a handful of dirt down on the little girl's grave as she walks away after her metamorphosis.

Chinchilla really is the most extraordinarily unique and enthralling artist I can think of right now. Thank you Chris for putting so much energy and enthusiasm into these reactions. Let's remember also that she had to create and pay for this video herself. She is literally giving everything she has.

I love how she can change the emotive aspect of a song simply (I say that but it isn't) by chosing to alter her vocal expression. This went from expressive go get them anthem to an introspective anthem. Also and I saw that in 'How to be Me', the control she has of her belting voice where she holds back after the first mmms (the I can't breath part) whilst belting and doesn't hold back in the second mmms is simply masterful.
Also as ever thank you for the thorough analyses.

omg this is the first time i heard this live version and i had it playing in the background on my tv but focusing on my phone and then she did that power note at the end and before my mind registered the sound i felt it in my body, an unexpected emotional response that made my body jolt and at the same time as i started to sob. i have never experienced anything like that before, and im not someone that’s close to tears - actually i have a hard time even trying to access my emotions a lot of the time because of coping mechanisms i developed from childhood emotional neglect..
i think there’s just something with the emotions she put into that note- a slightly haunting, hurt, broken feeling that apparently gives her direct access to bypass my mind and go straight to my emotions. i’m torn between feeling frazzled, shocked and honestly a little scared vs feeling giddy with how fucking cool it was.
i just /had/ to share this experience as it’s quite a big deal for me🤯 and thank you chris for the comic relief at the end with the hulk impression 😂

The only thing I'll differ with your analysis is that this version's beginning isn't desperate or expecting defeat. It's dangerous. The calm before the storm. Quiet and seething but confident rage... a cobra coiled before striking. It's also a trick. "Oh look. I'm just a little girl, right? Suuurree... come in closer to hear little meeee...😈🤬. Please darling, underestimate me- it makes the surprise and terror I'm about to see on your face all the sweeter."

Omg, as soon as it dropped I started checking your channel for a reaction! I love the studio version, where its just badass from the jump. But this one, the way she gets so soft and builds it, feels more dangerous. If you haven't heard the studio version of Fingers, that too is just completely different than the live version. I think it's cool that she can rework her songs so drastically. I would think that would be hard as an artist, since they've already got the song the way they wanted it in the first place, to then step back, strip it down and rebuild it.

Elizabeth and some others focus on the vocal technique from an explanatory perspective. You sir, focus on what it means to execute these techniques, either in studio or in performance. As a singer, this resonates on a completely different level. Thanks for your insight! (and keep loving Chinchilla).

The best way I can think to describe it is villain origin story 😂 The people that are the scariest when they snap, to me, are the quiet ones. And that's the vibe I get at the beginning. Thanks for the inspiration. I just came back from an outdoor concert and didn't wreck the voice box. However, even though I was ready to scream with my favorite band I couldn't. Because humidity and asthma don't go together. Even the band on the stage was struggling to sing and play the music. So I only kind of can do it but it was still an amazing experience. When my break is finished I will experiment to discover what else I can do with my voice and record it.

As another commentator pointed out already, that thing she did with her voice at 1:26 is so weirdly beautiful to me that I find myself rewinding it every time I see this performance. There is a whole lot to say for the influence hindi vocalists who use this or similar types of vocal techniques more often (which as probably one of reasons why it always catches me off guard as someone not very familiar with eastern music). As I started listening for it more carefully, I’m realising that she not only uses this and other similar eastern-sounding effects here, in this little modulation/run, yet that it is actually a quite recurring thing in her repertoire of vocal skills that I am now seem to start finding snippets of in almost every single song of hers I (re)listen, most of time it will be quite subtle whilst fully embracing all of in her song ‘Elements’).
And the more I hear her using these techniques, the more I’m now also trying to put my finger on what exactly characterises these intriguing sounds + how are they achieved. I’m by no means a musician, yet my ears seem to tell me that what makes her vibrato and her modulations so unique when she applies these techniques is that the tones are chopped up so to speak, not forming that continuous oscillation we usually expect in western music. There is a very conscious shuttering of the vocal flow, creating separations within otherwise continuously voiced vibratos, I believe. Or at times even a sort of tremelo-like off&on switching. That, combined with the ease with which Chinchilla switches back and forth between registers and adds even more dynamics by switching up where and how she positions the sounds she.s aiming for within that remarkable instrument that is her voice, I am starting to think this, my humble layman’s analysis, might actually have some truth to it. How horribly wrong am I here Chris, feel free to enlighten me on the subject…
Plus strangely enough the only other vocalists that I have started to associate as occasionally using similar techniques are: 1. Chinchilla.s vocal sibling Ren + 2. even more so the late great Jeff Buckley (about whom I remember Ren having said that he regularly watched Chris Liepe-videos on YT to try to sound more like the legendary Jeff…). Just a couple of thoughts running through my mind, don.t know wether any of this makes any sense to anyone?
Anyway: great reaction to a hauntingly beautiful song (don’t know whether you saw my suggestion for a reaction to this version or not, either way: glad you did! loved watching this)

    Great video Chris.
If I may recommend a video for your consideration for reaction or simply vocal breakdown, there is a newer collaboration with the artist Medium Build and X Ambassadores named "Friend for life." I believe the track was recorded live in the room the video is filmed in, and both artists singing are doing something really special that is unlike anything I've heard from either one of them. Highly recommend it. I can't get enough.

Can't wait to hear your opinion on the background singers?
Edit: 9:29 your face says how I feel about them here. I don't know if chinchilla is just so good it makes them sound bad to me? Still love everything she has done

@@chrisliepe they sounded a little bit off when they first started, but I think that they sound better at the end. Just my opinion ❤️
