A demonstration of the care and attention to detail employed by PiciScan while scanning medium format negatives as part of our medium format scanning service.
Very helpful. I was stuck with slide sizes until using the scanner view you used. Nothing mentioned in "help" about doing it this way. Thanks
Hi Joe, Thanks for your message. I'm glad this wee video was so helpful. Regards, Mark
@@PiciScan Yes short but not included in documentation of V600. I didnt know you could do medium negatives that way. I kept getting chopped views in thumbnail view like a slide. So short was valuable to me.
I'm new to scanning, so this was really helpful. But can I ask why you don't put the negatives in rotated through 180 degrees so that you don't need to reverse each one?
Hi John, I've just watched the video again and your question makes perfect sense now! I scanned the negatives upside-down because I was scanning the transparencies in order; with the first, numbered negative in the top-left of the preview screen. When strips of medium format negatives are scanned this way, with the smaller number first, at the top, the images tend to be upside-down. It would have made no difference to the scanning if I'd put the negatives in the other way round, I just would have needed to have positioned the marques starting at the bottom-left, rather than top-left. I hope that helps.
Hi, I Have recently purchases the Epson Perfection V800 and was wondering to the images that are scanned appear as separate files or do I have to save and crop ? example if I scan 24 images on negs it appears in 3 strips and then I would normally save x 24 and crop, am I doing it the long way round ?
+Harwich Dovercourt Thanks very much for your question. I'm afraid I've not used a V800 scanner before, so this may not apply, but with a V700, using the Epson Scan software, you can save each negative frame as a separate image. Start by clicking on Preview. Change from Thumbnail to Normal view. Click and drag to draw a rectangle larger than the first frame. Click on the box with a dotted rectangle/square in it, to duplicate this rectangle, and move it to the next frame. Repeat this process until you have boxes drawn around all your frames. When you click Scan, all the frames will be scanned as individual files. I explain this from about 1:57 onwards in the video, but, if that's of no help, or you'd like more info, just message back and I'll have another go at explaining.
Where did you get the negative holder for the medium format film? Did it come with the scanner?
I own a Epson V370 and think I do not have a holder for medium format..
Hi Christiaan,
Thanks very much for your question.
The adaptors I use in the video came with the scanner. If you're looking for some for your scanner, it might be worth trying this website:www.parts-distribution.com/pages/epson-scanners
With kind regards,

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your reply!
For my scanner, that website only offers the holder I already have (for 35mm and slide). But the holder for you V700 seems to have the same notches to fit my flatbed.
How far are those notches apart?
Thanks again!

Hi Christian,
Thanks for your question. Apologies for not coming back to you straight away, but I wanted to get into work to measure up.
The total scanning area on a V700 Photo Scanner is 22.5cm x 30cm (approx). The adaptor is 23.5cm x 30cm (approx). The notches on the side of the flatbed are 18cm apart (pretty exactly).
Hope that helps. If you'd like to ask anything else, just comment again.
With kind regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Thanks again for the reply and taking the measurements.
The scanning area of my V370 is similar to your V700.
My current 35mm holder has 20.5cm in between the two notches, so I guess that Epson does not want us to use holders for the higher end scanners on other models.
Thanks again!

Hi Christiaan,
That sounds frustrating! You could always invest in an A4 sized pane of glass to hold down anything that was too large for your usual adaptors. Or, if you wanted, you could always come to us to scan your medium formats for you! piciscan.co.uk/medium-format-scanning-service
Whatever you do, I hope you get it sorted soon.
With kind regards,
Mark
Is this a joke? I am a photographer , and this is the worst demonstration of scanning I have ever seen.
I do not mean to be rude , but firstly , no artist who values his work is ever going to be happy having it scanned on a flatbed.
1200 dpi , no adjustable focal plane???
Next , nobody should EVER be click happy on the 'AUTO' settings in photoshop. I mean , you just clicked AUTO on everything. The worst you could ever do.
To be blunt , If I sent you my work to scan , and you returned a result similar to what you have demonstrated , I would insist , no , demand , a refund.
As I said , Im not being rude , but if your going to advertise a scanning service , do it properly.
Hi +Gord Mills
Thanks for your candid response to our video. It's good to get feedback no matter what it is.
I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but it took me a while to realise that I needed to first approve your comment. That in itself doesn't seem fair of Google, but anyway.
The focal plane on an Epson V700 Photo Scanner is adjustable. There are two that can be accessed using the settings in Epson scan, selected by asking for Film with Area Guide or Film with Film Holder. Also, the video only demonstrates what we term as the standard scanning service for medium format transparencies and negatives. Should you require a higher resolution or the transparencies cleaning prior to scanning, we would be able to accommodate you. We also offer a service whereby any remaining dust or other unwanted marks are digitally removed in PSE.
The use of the automatic settings in PSE is to speed up the process, and produces results that more than 99% of our customers are happy with. That said, we recognise that using automatic settings doesn't always produce the best results and each scan is visually checked and adjusted further if required, BEFORE saving the scans to disc and returning to the customer. This is one of the reasons all scans are first made as Tiff files: so any adjustment won't affect the quality of the final result.
One of our most frequent customers is a small publishing house who have always been happy with our results. And, several artists have brought repeat business to us. That said, the service they get is beyond that demonstrated in the video and they would be right to request a refund if this was all they were getting.
So, thanks again for your comment. I hope that I have addressed at least some of your concerns. If you have any further comments to add, please write again and I will do my best to ensure I reply sooner next time.

+Gord Mills Glad the negs don't belong to me either..was cringing when he grabbed them out of the sleeve and wiped across them with his fingers!
Yorkie in NZ Thanks very much for your comment. I don't know if it makes any difference to your view, but, I was wearing latex gloves in the video! So, no finger marks were left.
+PiciScan My apologies for that ..must wear my glasses more often :-(
+PiciScan You should not wear latex gives for this as some latex contains chemicals that are harmful to the cellulose base of the film. Only lint free cotton gloves should be used to hand the film with.
