  • In this video I talk about how to set. up Anki to start learning Japanese vocabulary. I explain how flashcards, spaced repetition and Anki work as well as how to set it up for completely free.
If you are completely new to Anki or learning Japanese, then this is the video for you. This is a beginner friendly set up guide for starting out on learning Japanese including Hiragana, Katakana and the 6000 most common Japanese words.
We do a full walk through installing and optimizing Anki for learning Japanese. You will also learn about the new FSRS algorithm, what settings to adjust for it to work for your own pace of learning and how to customize the appearance and content of Anki cards.
    I hope this is helpful

I think with the new FSRS algorithm there is a bit more control in terms of how big your work load gets.
Best way to learn is still immersion, so no biggie if you end up hating it again, haha.
      Thanks for watching!

@@johnbraat I will definitely give it a shot, this tutorial has made it seem significantly more appealing 👏
PS. How is your Japanese going nowadays, if you don't mind me asking? How would you rate your speaking and reading/listening comprehension?

      @@japanese2811 Of course I don't mind asking 🙂
It's going really well. I just cracked the 2000 hours studied mark last month. Comprehension wise I'm fairly confident it's around the N2 level. I currently watch Jojos and understand most words. I definitely still encounter words I don't know though.
Reading is also fairly good, probably because 1300 of the 2000 hours was just Kanji/Vocab study.
Speaking is getting better and better. I can definitely hold a conversation, but I'm still fishing for words here and there. I have consistently been doing one hour of casual conversation via italki weekly.
      Hope that answers it 🙂

@@johnbraat Thank you sir, it is really cool to hear how your experience is panning out. Congrats on the milestones so far! 🥳
I know language learning is not really a comparable thing across individuals for a variety of reasons, but it's still fantastic insight to see how people progress with time.
I have also spent countless hours studying Japanese, and I think I can confidently say that vocabulary is still the thing that holds me back so much. I don't know how to "catch up" on this. Like I've spent many hours on grammar and kanji but now paid the price by not doing enough immersion. This year I changed that by going full immersion (primarily reading and podcasts) with virtually no grammar, but the more I read or listen, the more I can tell that there are sooooo many words that I don't know 🙈 The immersion route definitely helps get the words into my head (eventually!) but it feels a lot slower and less methodical than learning vocabulary directly. I don't suppose you have any advice for me on this given your experience?
Anyway, long story short, this is probably the reason why I am keen to try Anki again despite my reservations about it 😅 So thank you once again for your helpful tutorial!
PS. I also really want to try deliberate conversation practice this year, but I keep going back and forth on how valuable it is... Is this something you'd highly recommend?

I've been using the deck with 1970 cards

Around 2000 cards should be fine to have a good foundation for immersion, so you are all good! No need to go through all of the 6000 cards
I would recommend to immerse from the get go, even if it's just 5-15 minutes a day. A great place to start is "NHK News Web Easy".
      Thanks for watching!

Any suggestions on Manga and how you might use Anki to create decks for a manga to help you learn those words that you may not have seen yet in the 2k6k deck?

    • @johnbraat
      @johnbraat  2 місяці тому +1

Yeah, you could take every word you encounter in a specific manga and create a sentence card for it in Anki.
I would keep it super simple:
Front side: word in Kanji/Hiragana/Katakana (whatever is the most common way to read it) and the sentence you read it in as a hint field. Alternatively, just the full sentence with the word in bold would be fine as well.
Back side either a translation, or if you want to be hardcore just a description of the word in Japanese.
I wouldn't pack the cards with too much fluff, simply because it takes longer to create the cards. At the end of the day you need to know what you want to add if it really helps you (images, sound, etc.)
Bonus: If you want sound for words you can check out "forvo[dot]com". There are recordings from native speakers for most words. You can download them for free and add them to your Anki cards if you want
Hope that helps 🙂 Thanks for watching!
