How to Use Anki to Learn Japanese | Japanese Anki Deck & Setup for Core Japanese Vocabulary

- How to use Anki to learn Japanese vocabulary! This Japanese Anki tutorial will show you how to set up Anki, what deck I recommend, and how to use Anki. If you want to learn Japanese, you need a system to learn lots of Japanese vocabulary. Anki is a spaced repetition system that will help you memorize tons of Japanese words so that, eventually, you can read Japanese books! The only prerequisite is that you can read hiragana and katakana, but don't worry if you're a bit slow -- This deck will be great for improving your reading speed!
Also sorry about the weird left audio, I just thought my earbuds were broken 😭 I don't think I can fix it after uploading but I'll make sure future videos have this fixed!

Hi, I'm Alivia! I started learning Japanese in the summer of 2020. I'm using this channel to share my study approach, my progress, and as an outlet for all my Japanese "study research". Language learning can be a messy progress, so I hope to share what I've learned from all the bumps along the road. I also speak French, a little bit of Spanish, and my current goal is to pass the JLPT N3. Join me!

I downloaded Anki years ago but I've always felt so overwhelmed by it... your video is making me feel like I can sort of wrap my head around it for the first time, than you!
Glad it helped! I feel like Anki has a big barrier to entry. The concept is fairly straightforward but the app design and user guide are so confusing!
Same here! I’ve had it installed on my computer and iPhones for years, but could just never really figure out how are you’re supposed to use it. I finally decided to turn to Google for help, and this video was the first thing that popped up. Interestingly enough, the deck that is imported in this video is the one that I had just read about on Reddit as being really good, and that was what inspired me to finally figure out how to use Anki.
It’s been two years since and I’m new (Hi!)
The deck is now called “JLPT Tango N5 MIA”
I think it's changed now, do you know what's it called now?
I can't find either. Can you confirm its current name?
@@jeffnewby9949as of april 1, 2024 it is still called what katanatamar4188 said

Yes
me left ear really enjoyed this video

I find a lot of videos out there that tell you the resources they used to learn japanese but they never do detailed walkthroughs of the materials and I think thats where your videos are very informative, thank you!!!
Thank you for this. I'm also using Matt vs. Japan's learning method for Japanese and while I acknowledge the guy knows his stuff, he kinda skips some steps in basic explanation sometimes. This video was a lifesaver, Anki is not a user friendly program lol.
Glad it helped! Matt’s videos first introduced me to Anki as well and I also found I had to look elsewhere to get everything up and running, so hopefully this video solves that problem!
thank you!! out of all the videos i've watched about learning japanese with anki, this one helped me the most. i'm really excited to learn!
This has been the most useful and easy to follow Anki tutorial for me, so thank you!! I was really putting off using Anki but you've made it look so simple :)
Glad it helped!! I didn’t start using it until I was months in and put it off for the exact same reason
I already know how to use Anki, but I watched just to support your channel! Good luck!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! 💕💕
the deck linked in this video was removed, but if you search "JLPT Tango N5 Deck - Migaku Note Types" you should find an identical one
thank you!!
You are a capeless superhero
Great video, she is really good at explaining everything, actually great how she explains everything because something the simple things need to be explained to some people.
Awesome Tutorial!
It explains everything clearly and concisely without using vocabulary that is too complex or too simplified.
I was able to keep up really easily with everything you were saying, and never felt lost, even with the fast pace of your explanations.
You also demystified a lot of the key functions concerning Anki and its setup, particularly in the settings section. I was having real trouble trying to wrap my head around it and the Browser section before watching your video, so thanks a lot! :)
All in all, you've made a great beginner friendly video, and you've more than earned a like and a sub. Stay great and keep learning! :D
Bye!
you vids could not have come at a more perfect time!!! love all of them and your advice is so helpful. thank you!!
Thank you so much!! Also love the profile pic 💕 Such a great movie!
Love the clean style of your videos and clear explanations. Great channel!!
I appreciate that! Thanks!💕
thanks so much for creating this video!! I really would've been incredibly lost otherwise! Now I can get started without being overwhelmed by the technical stuff!
This is the best Anki video I have ever seen. It was extremely helpful and I learned a lot. Thanks very much!
Happy to be of help!
I'm setting up my anki while watching your video. Thanks for the explanation, really helpful and very easy to follow :)
Great explanation for it. I been using Anki for 2 years now and thank you for covering aspects of Anki I never knew before.
Glad you could learn something new!
Just found out about this channel and it's so resourceful! I'm just starting to use Anki and I was so confused, so this was a great help. I hope you could cover how to create your own decks and cards on Anki sometime. Thanks so much for creating these videos!
Glad you’re finding it useful! I’ll definitely be making more videos like that soon 😁 I just moved to a new place so still getting settled and trying to figure out where to film :)
I really appreciate this video. I was overwhelmed by the number of settings in Anki and the number of decks to choose from. Thanks!
Glad you found it useful! When I started I was overwhelmed too and tried out a few decks, but this one checked all the boxes for me
Really helpful - thank you! I just started using Anki and your video really helped me figure it out!
I am trying out Anki now for attempting the JLPT N1 in December.
well Anki was just the most confusing, unfriendly program I had ever seen, but after this video it seems much better than I originally anticipated. thank you so much!!
Thanks a lot, this was very helpful!! You got a nice content, video and didactic! Hope this channel grows much more
Glad you liked it! Thank you 🥰🥰
Hello, I just started and have watched a few of your videos and plan to watch more. Thank you so much for all your help because even though I was excited a few times I was like UGH already nah lolol. Then I came across your videos and so far you are number two on my list besides an instructor who teaches Japanese. Keep up the good work and I hope I see more form you soon")
I just started using Anki with the minna no nihongo deck to learn the vocabulary more efficiently, but this video helped me better understand how to use it. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
I don't kno how she figured all this out but I'm grateful, gleeful and giddy that she did... and then shared :)
Nice video!! I just started using Anki for learning Japanese, which I began studying in late January of this year. Glad I found your channel :)) 🇧🇷
What a great way to start the new year! I hope my videos help you navigate your studies 😊
Your video really helped me wrap my head around the UI of Genki. I hope to see more videos like this in the future, thanks.
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much. The best video I have found on UA-cam❤
I really like the way you talk, didn't bore me one bit. Good job and thank you for this.
I’m glad to hear that! 20 minutes of tutorial isn’t the most exciting material😅
YOU'RE A LIFE SAVIOR FOR BEGINNERS! THANK YOU!
Thank you so much! Your way of explaining is so succinct. I would've found this intimidating to set up on my own. I imagine this will be a really helpful resource for me, yay!
Yay so glad you found it useful! It can definitely be a bit intimidating
Thank you for this video. I have been struggling to memorize vocabulary and this really helps!!
You're well-spoken. I enjoyed the video. Very quick-to-the-point, informative, and concise.
Thank you, I appreciate that! ❤️
Hi! Under the reviews tab you had us change the easy interval to 191%, however now there is a new option called hard interval that must have been added after you made this video. The default hard value is 120%. What would you suggest we put this at?
I didn't really know how to use Anki before.
This video is really helpful for me.
Thank you so much! ❤️
I’m glad it was useful to you!
This is an excellent introduction and breakdown, thanks so much! :)
Thank you so much for breaking this down!! Your channel is phenomenal💖New subscriber!!
You are so welcome! Thanks for the sub 💕
Thank you the video! This is really going to help me learn phrases.
On point.Just what i was looking for :)
Thank you!
You're very welcome!
loving your videos ^^ going through them all
Very precise explanation about Anki! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
This was super helpful! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! Your video was really helpful for me. The way you explained how to do it since the beggining was perfect. Sorry for bad english. Thx
Glad it helped!
Super helpful video, thanks for sharing!
Very helpful, thanks.
the explanation of the difference between 'good' and 'easy' was really helpful! I never understood what the difference would be in the algorithm!
Yeah they are very different in terms of the algorithm, but you'd hardly know by the way they are labeled! You can tweak the settings so that the difference isn't as prominent, but I found it was simpler to save the 'easy' button for words that I already knew very well
Merci beaucoup pour ton tutoriel! Have a blessed day!
Thank you so much for this guide. I was intimidated by setting up anki (probably because I didn't read the website). Now I can start tackling reading kanji!
Yeah the website is definitely overwhelming to read through 😅 Glad I could help!
Wow! Thank you so much. That was soooo clear 🙏
Thank you for breaking down Anki!
Np! I’ll be doing more vids in the future going in to more depth for those who are interested 😁
Thank you for your recommendations! I'm casually learning Korean and wasn't sure how to best optimize learning new vocab with Anki!
Happy to help! I'm sure there are lots of similar pre-made Anki decks with basic Korean vocabulary for you to use 😊
Super helpful video. Thank you!
A great and useful video, thank You!
My left ear really liked this video.
Super helpful! Thanks!
8:00 the irony of having the hello tag on さよなら 🤣 thanks for this vid it’s rly helped me navigate anki!! was so confused before :)
Thank you sooooo much for this Tutorial !!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭❤❤❤❤ Im so excited to get started!!!!!
Huge help. Thank you!!!
Great video, helped out alot.
Hi Alivia, great video, I was wondeirng if you could make a follow up video with your favourite decks or which decks to add after this one. keep up the good work!
After the Tango N5 deck I moved to the tango N4! Since then I have taken a break from Anki since I feel like my vocabulary base is big enough for my current goals and just doing straight immersion/looking up words as I go along :)
Thanks alot.. for your clear explanation ❤️
You're the best, thanks
thank you so much for this video!
Thank you!
This was amazingggg
Very helpful! But fyi, that shared deck no longer exists. Can you please recommend another for a beginner?
Thank you so much!!! At first i watched Mat's video but it was overwhelming. You made it wayyyy simpler, thanks.
Glad it helped! He has great info but it can take some extra searching
Great video
Best Anki video I've seen. Thanks! So you did this deck alongside going through Anki and Wani Kani?
Hey Alivia, great video! Just got Anki setup and it's good to go. Great tutorial, you explained everything well and I look forward to trying it out. It looks like it will be really useful for memorizing Japanese. Great logo by the way. Did you use an app for the animation or did someone draw it?
this was the only video i could understand thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
@@AliviasNook qq33eeewer^
ive had anki for a very short amount of time and this helped me understand the app enouph to not be scared of it ^_^ ありがとう!
Haha I was scared too when I first started using it !
That was really helpful! Thanks a lot!
Glad I could help!
Warm thanks to you for these instructions, and tips for use. Now this program makes some sense. ;-)
Excellent video. Very Helpful. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much
After all these years, I've still never used Anki. Definitely going to dive deep into it as I start learning new languages this year. Cheers
Glad I could teach you something new! What languages are you learning?
@@AliviasNook My goal for this year is Korean! Love your teaching style by the way, very natural
What a great language! I’d love to hear how it goes. And thanks!
My left ear enjoyed this video

You’re very welcome!
thanks for the vid! this makes me excited to start learning. I'm new in Japanese. My first textbook in Genki just came in. Any recommendations of other anki sources for fresh new learners? the cards in this video look really intimidating when I dont have the best grasp of hiragana yet
ありがとう Alivia-san! great helpful video.
You’re very welcome!
My headphones' left is not working so I could only listen music in the background LUL
Well done! Thank you.
Thanks for watching!

Glad you found it helpful 💕
Very good :) my left ear took in all the info tho haha
Great video!!! Thank you
Glad you liked it!
thankyou profusely Alivia.
Thanks for the video. I just started using Anki and was overwhelmed by the features. Your video was of great help😊. I do have a question related to anki can we change the settings so that we have to type the answer like we do it in WaniKani?
this video is mega helpful
Seems like the deck is down, is there a way for you to pm me the anki deck (zip) or something TT)
Search for the one named "JLPT Tango N5 Deck - Migaku Note Types", it's identical and still up now
ありがとうございます
Thanks a ton. Do you have a recommended deck for a Japanese speaker learning English?
ありがとうございます!
This is super helpful, I've always been put of Anki by not knowing what to do, or picking poor decks :/ Hopefully it will go better this time
Anki can be super intimidating. I hope this helps!
A very usefull video Alivia. Do you also make your own cards for words you encounter? If so, how do you go about doing it? What is your strategy?
Thank you! I actually don’t make my own cards (I find it makes me less motivated to read), but I think it’s definitely a great strategy if you are up for it! I’d say pick how many cards you want to make per day, and once you reach it stop making cards and continue your reading. If you make a card for every single word you’ll never have time to review them!
