  • For the past half year I have studied Japanese for a 3 month trip in Japan. In this video I will go into the final results of my study and a few anecdotes how I used the Japanese I learned while being in Japan.
    I wanted to get to a level where I could hold a conversation and speak to locals. If you are interested in how I learned and see me speaking Japanese, you might like these videos:

    Am also on my seventh month, 310 hours, recently when I hit 6k voc I hit a mark where a lot of fun materials could be read and comprehended at like a 98% comprehension, like chainsawman or 天国大魔境. Now yesterday I hit 7k voc. Hard work does really pay off. Thanks for making these videos on your journey, they’re incredibly motivating to watch.

      @@makedonas6 takes around 67 hours on Anki to learn 2000 words so around 234,5 hours to learn 7000 words. The hard part comes when you have to learn how to use them in a sentence by hearing them a lot through immersion or by hearing/making a lot of example sentences with the words.

    Moin Digga,
    congrats with your progress. You remind me of myself some years ago i went on a highschool exchange to japan. Back then prior to going to japan i used Japanisch im sauseschritt textbooks and i could communicate well in japanese. But yeah when in japan i took the jlpt 3 test and passed. But most imortantly i really enjoyed my time there and so should you. However when i returned i lost completely interest in japanese and stoped learning. During Covid i just started learning chinese, learned remembering the hanzi, and am now conversational. Once i reach a high level in chinese in will return to japanese and improve that.
    Have fun in Japan

    Thanks a lot for the update. How did you end up feeling about Miku's shadowing exercises?
    I've been considering it, but it's not clear to me I wouldn't do better just using more Satori Reader and Anki.
    Great to see your progress, and glad you enjoyed Japan!
    And I had to laugh about your experience with Izakaya menus. They seem almost impossible, but Google Lens does an amazing job.

      I think the shadowing audio is great because it is curated content to learn very common grammar and improve pronunciation. I loved it because I can listen to it while doing other stuff (gym, walks, etc.) which makes it easy to fit it into my day. I also like how fast Miku speaks. It's a bit faster than many alternatives.
      Google lens for sure is a life saver for Japanese beginners like me 😁

    Great break down of what is actually possible in 6 months for learning Japanese and how real studying actually look like vs. I watch sub anime all time so surely I could understand Japanese. I hope you keep us posted on your further progress. I have two suggestions that you might all ready know about for vocab first is meshclass free app that you can use both on mobile and desktop that teaches and quizzes you all the vocab up to N1. Second is the Game Gengo Vocab Series where Matt goes through various video games teaching you vocab. Here one that will get you a lot of use 怪盗. 勉強頑張って

    Hi John I've seen multiple videos of yours and I have a question my reading and writing is okay but my speaking is non existent and I wanna book italki sessions but am afraid that they will be very awkward as I will barely understand or say anything what's your advice

    • @johnbraat
      @johnbraat  9 місяців тому

      Glad you are enjoying the videos 🙂 I would recommend to have at least a little foundation for speaking before going into lessons. You should probably have finished at least half or so of Genki 1, probably around 3/4.
      It's still going to be hard to get out sentences, remember words etc. It is most likely going to be awkward at first, but don't forget, this is what the italki teachers do. They are there to help you practice. They are used to people not being perfect. If you were perfect already, you wouldn't need italki 🙂
      Don't worry too much about it, just do it. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    Good video and congrats on your progess. I have only one thing I don't really agree with.
    "studying a language while not in the country is a whole lot more difficult than if you were in the country already [...]"
    While on the surface this sounds like a reasonable thing to say, I think its heavily missguided. 95%+ of the foreigners in Japan are a prime example of that as they suck in Japanese even after multiple years or decades in the country, so just being in Japan won't really do your Japanese any good, especially if you trap yourself in a foreigner bubble where everyone speaks English (and this is really easy, especially in Tokyo) so this is hardly any better than being in your home country. I think with todays technology it's so easy to surround yourself with what ever language you want (given there is an abundance of content), of course you will have to create this environment yourself, but so will you when you live in Japan. (The 95% is a pure guess, but I know _many_ foreigners like that in Japan that think they will magically become good just being there talking English allday long).

    • @johnbraat
      @johnbraat  Рік тому +1

      Glad you liked the video and thanks for watching again! 🙂 I really appreciate it!
      I get where you coming from, and I'm aware there are tons of foreigners in Japan who have never learned Japanese.
      However, worst case scenario of living in Japan is speaking exactly the same amount of Japanese than people who aren't. Not at all. There are tons of opportunities to speak and read Japanese in Japan. You can of course go out of your way to surround yourself with Japanese even if you aren't living in Japan, but the argument that it isn't exponentially easier when you are living there doesn't make much sense to me.
      Don't get me wrong. It's still very hard to learn Japanese even if you live in Japan but still easier than if you weren't. Many foreigners tend to hide in bubbles, which doesn't help. People need to put in effort to learn the language.
      I stand by that it's exponentially easier to learn a language when you have 100x more opportunities using the language just through naturally living life in addition to active study.

    The problem with channels that makes videos like these is that you don't actually show is quantifiable proof of what you claim to know. A closer measure for the viewer to really see your progress would be something like reading an article in Japanese or trying to speak in Japanese without a script about certain topics. Of course, you could theoretically falsify those but it's not really much of a "progress video" if I literally don't see any segments of you using the language in the video; it defeats the whole purpose of the theme.
