- We are starting a series on the Rings of Power! Beginning with the elves, we will uncover what exactly the powers were of the Three Elven Rings, what made them special compared to the rings of the dwarves and men, and how they were passed on from their creator, Celebrimbor, to Galadriel, Gil-galad (eventually Elrond), and Cirdan (eventually Gandalf). Enjoy this video to learn all about Nenya, the ring of water, Vilya, the ring of air, and Narya, the ring of fire!

As I work my way through the History of Middle Earth series, these videos are a great resource to remember details I missed or to clarify complex histories that remain spread out in Tolkien's fragments. Its awesome to see the salted pork partnership with Lord of Maps.
Do the seven rings of the dwarves after
I love the rings names, I think they would make great baby names!
My nephew watches all your videos religiously, while I sit back and eat my salted pork. ;)
Why didn't you show the arrival of the blue wizards with the other three?
Will do 🥰.
Also can you do a video on the Waning of the Dúnedain?
How they became lesser with time, and their lifespans, wisdom, stature and strength waned. How they forgot their own architecture (forgetting how to build mighty things like Orthanc, The Rammas Echor, the Black Walls of Minas Tirith, Hornburg etc.
To the point that by the late Third Age, most Gondorian commoners lived a mere 80 to 100 years. The high lords around 110 - 120 at most (the exclusions being the Stewards and his line and those of Dol Amroth (with somewhere around 130 - 135 years). Even the Dúnedain of the North, with a mere 130 - 175, the exception being Aragorn with 210 years by the end of his life (still a mere Shadow compared to his ancestors in pre-fall Nûmenor, who lived around 250 - 300 years or the kings with 350 - 450 approx).
Sorry for the testament 😅, it is one of my favorite topics from the Legendarium.
Sauron: "Celebrimbor, where are the three Elven Rings?"
Celebrimbor: "Nenya..."
Sauron: "Yes, Nenya and the others"
Celebrimbor: *leans in*, *whispers* "Nenya business"
lol winning
I'm officially Dead 😭😭😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@-_Nuke_-
So is Celebrimbor
I see. The reason why sauron killed him. 😄
*gets impaled in the ass*
It makes sense that Sauron's Ring would be plain in appearance. He hides his malice and power through a Fair Form.
Look fair, feel foul.

Gandalf said a shadow fell on his heart when he, Bilbo, and the Dwarves got past the Hithaeglir, though he did not know the cause.
Had that beautifully dark inscription only seen by fire too
doesn't have to look fancy when it's got the kind of power it does
I love how with Tolkien's elves versus other fantasy, instead of being so magical and immortal that they show an indifference to physical and temporal things, are more bound to the world and sensitive to its decay. Humans in contrast are more free and spared from weariness, due to their mortality and the mysterious fate of their spirits beyond the world. Also, has anyone else theorized a connection between the elven rings and the preserving nature of salted pork?
Well that's because many other fantasy elves are very weak copies of tolkien elves
I wanted to say it charitably since they helped me find Tolkien eventually, but yeah I agree. Those elven races usually focus either on the arcane or the nature part, instead of being this nuanced.
@@taylorlewis6931 exactly, they capture the same general vibe and look of tolkein's elves but without any of the depth and complexity
Only one who has done a day's work may be bearer of a ring of power.
Did a hobbit hack your phone for that last bit?
I find the whole "preservation from the decay of time" particularly interesting. It seems that Lothlórien actually exists outside of the normal time-space-continuum. There are a few hints in "The Lord of the Rings" about this fact. For example, the members of the Fellowship don't seem to have an accurate perception of time while they stay there and later Sam discovers that more than a month has gone by despite the fact that they only stayed there for several days. Aragorn tells them that they have experienced time like the elves - as a river that flows both fast and slowly at the same time. Treebeard seems to know about this as well, because he tells the Hobbits that "they stay behind time [in Lórien]".
Frodo seems to be especially perceptive about the extraordinary nature of Lórien (probably because he is the bearer of the One Ring); he describes Rivendell as a place were the memory of the elder days still lives on while in the Naith of Lórien, the elder days actually still continue. Perhaps this difference can be explained by the greater power of Galadriel?
This is a good obversation, which I entirely agree with.
both the Ring of Elrond and the one from Galadriel were very powerfull, however my guess it also depends on the nature of the bearer. Nenya could have been the more powerfull of all - it seems that Celebrimboor meant it to be wield by Galadriel alone ALL TIME (as there are hints of him infatuated with her however he couldn´t do that because she was his aunt and already happily married to Celeborn, so pretty much as Fëanor also got some similar incestuous inspiration of his unfullfilled love-admiration for his niece asking thrice in vain for a locket of her hair [which she actually give much later on THREE freely for Gimli, a rather more worthy and humble nice requester for that, being that another awesome theme to contrast and remember always], and because of it he made the Silmarills, so Celebrimboor did the same with the Rings of Power) - however as Gil-Galaad was the last High King of the Elves and the main wielder of Vilya, the ring was considered then the Mightiest of all, as he use it along his works against Sauron very actively, whereas Galadriel just kept if to hold on to defend her domains.
Later on as, Elrond got Vilya, after Gil-Galaad knew by some vision or hunch, that he was not to survive the Last Alliance fight against Sauron, eventhough he might defeat him anyway, he was the next wielder but for sure, himself being actually a Half-Elf, not being close in all to the former bearer of the Ring who at once time, indeed have acheived a more mighty level of power than the Ring of Galadriel, because he was the High King then. So when the time of the Lord of the Rings story came, the relevance of Vilya was much of a legend after Gil-Galaad but not on true actual time since Elrond use it. Galadriel in other hand, now she didn´t have anything to rival her power, and mastered the use of the mightyness of Nenya at full lenght - thus also that way was how she got a hard trial when meeting the One Ring and almost nearly fall on the temptation to get it on her power too, though in the end, she succeded to overcome that trial, once more becoming worthy for returning to Valinor and acknowledging she must do that since her own power by her ring will be over some little time as long Frodo succeded his task. However, she wasn´t named a High Queen to rule all the High Elve lineages, eventhough she could have claimed it, and the power and the heritage rightfull to do it, but she accepted just the fate to not do it - maybe she was very haunted with memories on how all her family close-relatives who wanted power got doomed because of it, specially Fëanor and Celebrimboor in different ways for each one, so she didn´t seeked for it, untill the very end at the trial set by Frodo and the One Ring, which she succeded to avoid it once for all finishing the curse set on her family by the Valar.
It seems there are some very antifeministic and very traditional conservative views about females when wielding power, about how they shouldn´t seek power on the same way as males do, eventhough they might be into a position of power earned legally by her own as one last resource finding themselves into that by others and by chance, not by their own will, which is a very true patriarchally traditional condesendant-protective way, fearing that if Galadriel seeked and acheived actively power on her own, she could be another form of evil potential even more dangerous and troublesome than Sauron or all the other male-menances at the story, as totally unleashing a more true unnatural wild force to action to which anyone is prepared to fight properly against it - some very missogynic fear upon the unexpectedly-convoluted and darker-mysterious way of thinking of female brain broking out of logics and reason when totally wild of full passionate instincts on a position of power, and not wisdom to self-moderate themselves. It´s very interesting how the more uncanny dangerous foes of all Tolkien work are females: Ungoliant, Shelob, Queen Beruthine of Gondor (with her cats) and of course, this dark Galadriel alternative-future version hinted to be.
It seems that Tolkien idea, was very in tune with older classical traditional views, consolidated during his childhood and teenage years at late Victorian and the whole Edwardian ages of England, and over-all before WWI start at 1914, henceforth he though of women not seeking political-social power by their own will, neither seeking for more political-social power if they were already by change or chosen by others - men - on trust for that role, on a political-social appointment before. (He was somewhat also a bit rightfull on the more recent developments of feministic waves of their ideology, eventhough for a big while he has been proven also wrong on that conservative view.)
Or it could have been a property of Galadriel, a noldor who saw the light of the trees in vain or, a being who saw the silmarils and who fought against melkor the morgoth
@@CannabisDreams I always loved how she addressed him in the Hobbit trillogy to Sauron just as a "servant of Morgoth" which is actually a way to disminish his own power exposing him as a shade of the actual greater evil power already defeated before, and eventhough that scene of she confronting and expelling him from Dol-Guldur was a great addition to the Tolkien's lore adaptation on its own.
@@lhadzyan7300 Where are you even getting your third paragraph musings from? Galadriel WAS pretty much queen of her domain, much like Elrond. Everyone who might try to wield the One Ring is shown to be corrupted by it, except maybe Tom Bombadil, not just Galadriel (for instance Gandalf also denied it, just as she did, fearing corruption). Also pretty much all the characters who actually did fall to the Rings' corruption were male. Ungoliant and Shelob weren't just female, they also weren't human - so reading some sort of message about humanity into them is a stretch. Almost all the bad guys in LOTR are male, with Queen Beruthine being one of the only exceptions. How all this adds up to an "antifeministic" narrative is beyond me.

No she's the one witch I need her tell her to see my manager 😂
It wasn’t until I started watching this and other Tolkien videos that I realized something about the elven realms of the Third Age; they don’t have any obvious fortifications. Geography aside, Rivendell and Lothlorien seem completely open compared the defensive structures built by dwarves and men, yet the ring bearers were able to keep them safe from enemies without constructed barriers. It’s also why Mirkwood was something of an outlier; Thranduil had no ring at his disposal, so his own halls were much more obviously built as a defensive stronghold.
Great insight!
@@AlejandraCamposGua Thank you. I’ve also done a bunch of editing on the Tolkien Gateway site, and I think part of this observation also came from my work there.
Too bad there weren't two more ring for earth and heart. Then the elves could have used them to summon Captain Planet to fight Sauron .
Captain Midgard
This video went a long way towards clearing up why there's no "Earth" ring, in that they are tied to where the silmarils vanished to. It makes things clearer to me. If it helps any Valentin, it sounds like the ring of fire is also the ring of heart.
@@Dark_Jaguar well ,thanks but I was just joking. I mean come one rings that have the power of the elements ! Someone just had to make a "Captain Planet " joke.
I definitely was thinking about the 2 missing elements haha...
Captain Arda, He's a Hero
Gonna bring Dark Lords to zero
"But they were, all of them, decieved..."
Seem like Annatar was the first one a bit decieved, Celebrimbor making these rings without his influence, thank Eru!
Sauron could dish it out...
Fitting that Elrond bears Vilya the ring of air and his father, Eärendil the Silmaril in the air. Never thought of the 3 rings representing the fates of the 3 Silmarils, but it makes sense and a great bit of connection between Elrond and his father Eärendil. Great video Nerd of the Rings.
I think that all three of the Elven Rings also granted (or enhanced) the power of foresight to their bearers. Vilya, especially, would have been potent in this regard, since I suspect it also granted a limited degree of clairvoyance as well--fitting, considering that there is air everywhere, and it is the Ring of Air.
This power is probably the reason that Vilya ended up in Elrond's hands to begin with; Gil-galad marched into the War of the Last Alliance with the _full prior knowledge_ that, win or lose, he was going to be slain in the final battle at Sauron's hand. The combined powers of foresight and clairvoyance are what makes Elrond seem so all-knowing, despite the fact that he basically never leaves Rivendell, which in turn receives _few_ visitors, and only on _rare_ occasions; he doesn't _need_ to go anywhere to get a solid grasp on the big-picture of the happenings in Middle-Earth. This ring essentially put him on-par with the Elves of _considerably_ older generations, such as Galadriel.
These rings could be why Galadriel reminds Elrond that they foresaw Frodo's life in extreme danger because of the One Ring, and why Elrond could see Arwen's death from heartbreak (although I'm only speaking as a movie-only fan)
"As the dominion of man begins, the time of the Elves, and their rings, comes to a close."
That was a beautiful way to end this video!
I have absolutely RAN through all of your videos. Love how you break down all the stories and lore but still make it feel like a narrative story. You truly are the SALTED PORK of youtube channels.
Nice! I had been requesting indepth videos about the rings of power for a while now! Glad to see them finally get made.
I don't know about healing, but the element of air has been connected to clairvoyance and other similar powers in different things that I have read. So maybe the power of Vilya was the ability to use/enhancement of those type of powers. They say knowledge is power after all. Of course, it could (and probably is) something completely different.
No other channel on UA-cam captures the imagination and wonder of my childhood like this one. Thank you so very much.
I kind of love how Cirdan is low key in every video. Like he was just hanging around for the entire history of Middle Earth 😂
Love how informative this channel is, and so glad to get a chance to discover you through Lord of Maps! I admit I came for the salted pork, but I’ll definitely be staying to learn more about my favorite book series 😊
I've been trying to understand the three rings a lot more recently, so this is perfect timing aha!

Another great video. I love them all actually. You put in so much detail. It's amazing. If I had to pick witch videos I thought were gold were the morgoth videos.
Another great video! I've been reading the books and watching your videos simultaneously and it's been awesome. I'd love to see you cover the languages of Middle-Earth in future videos! There is PLENTY of material and since Tolkien was a philologist himself, it's a great way to understand his work. Thanks!
Thank you, for bringing us the in depth explanation in each video. Keep up the most excellent work!
Love this! Thank you @LordofMaps for sending me this way! Was just the Salted Pork i needed through this Covid Adventure!
I like how the 3 elven rings (fire, water, and air) correspond to the final fates of the 3 silmarils. One was lost in a fiery chasm. One was thrown into the sea. And the last sails the skies.

Such a good video! Another Master Piece!
Found this channel by way of lord of maps (salted pork I hear you say lol), and now my day has gotten even better 😊 Can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos ☘️
So there is a statement in LotR comparing Lorien to Rivendell which essentially states that the puryfing power of Nenya was much greater than for Vilya. However Rivendell is always considered the place the Hobbits (and most other folk) are most happy and content at which is supporting the theory that Vilya's healing powers were the greatest (altough it is said of all three that they could aid in healing).
Very good video, I'm really looking forward to the one on the dwarven rings 👍
always love learning more about the depth of tolkien
also i love this collab w salted pork! :)
Did Cirdan have a beard? In the new books they state that Numenoreans did not have beards, since they are decendendent of elves, yet Cirdan is an Elf and has been stated to have a beard.
Great question! It's something that has somewhat conflicting statements from Tolkien, but it seems most likely that certain elves could only grow beards when they are exceptionally old. Cirdan, having been around since Cuivienen, is the oldest elf ever to have their physical appearance described - at the end of ROTK.
False beard.
@@NerdoftheRings Thanks for answering. Do you think that leaves it open for very old Numenoreans to have beards?
Only 2 elves who had beards came to mind Mahtan father of Nerdanel (wife of Feanor) and Círdan, I believe Círdan was in the 3rd cycle of his life and Mahtan actually grew his at an early age roughly around his 2nd Age cycle.
Cirdan is ‘Ancient’ so why not..??
Wow. that image of Galadriel at 7:30 is the first time I've seen her drawn in a way to capture the beauty she is described as possessing in the books.

This was a very interesting video.
Ty for the subtitlles. Love from Brazil.
Another great video!
My understanding is that the Three Rings aren't just an allusions to the fate of the three Silmarils but it's more that in Tolkien's world, there are three basic elements: Air, Water, and Fire (though sometimes fire is blended a bit with earth). Even the three kindreds of elves tie-in to this theme. The Vanyar are associated with the Air as they are closest to Manwe, lord of eagles and mountains. The Teleri are associated to water, be it the sea (Falmari), the shores (Falathrim) or rivers (Nandor). The Noldor are associated with earth and fire, as they're craftsmen and forgers.
Given that though, I am curious why the Ring associated with Water is the chief, when air is the element associated with Manwe, the King of Arda. I'd have thought air would be the supreme ring, and as the video says it is the most powerful. So why not have it be the chief ring of the Three?
I think you deserve an award for this thumbnail. Great work as always.
