Eric, it’d be really interesting to hear about your tips for funding a startup; I.e. how much of your own finances you should put in before you consider loans or investors. It’d be interesting to hear your revisit this as well and what you’ve learned over the years from the beginning of beardbrand to now.
Excellent video,I wish i watched this video sooner....im self employed/sole trader in the motor idustry im a mobile mechanic and really enjoying it!also i can grow my goatee out with no worries!Keep the videos coming man
thanks for the video, it was quite inspirational. I just cut off most of a 6 month-ish beard yesterday for job interviews and I've been going through some of your other videos wishing I hadn't cut it off. but there's always time to grow another one
Thank you so much for this video, Eric. I started my business about three years ago, but am just coming up on my one-year solo full-time with it. It's good to know someone else can relate to the loneliness of it. This is really helpful and inspirational, and I will take heed to the advice and lessons contained in it. Thanks again.
Thanks for the inspiration! As an artist/videographer who has helped build a small business with my father, the sense of freedom is priceless. I have many days where I work late int the night- but because it is my passion, and choice, it doesn't feel the same as the days when the CEO made us work into the night, and paid us through greasy pizza (don't get me wrong, I dig me some pizza). This year in a working on a yeard (since August '13)...some of my past jobs would have made process particularly difficult. Working for oneself has eliminated that- along w/ some excellent Beardbrand oils :-)
Dude, i have watched many of your vids and i have come to the conclusion that you are a pretty cool person. i am trying to start a business and i appreciate the insight. thanks
So I am working on starting up my own business. I was just curious as to what I need to do exactly to start it. I have a few prototype products and I'm ready to start selling I'm just a little unsure as to where to sell. I've been thinking etsy might be a good choice but I heard you mention shopify. Do you know which one is better? Also are there any government forms I have to fill out to be an official business or can I do all that later?
I picked up some of your beard oil at Bolt in Los angels. Great product and great video. I have also been planning on starting my own business. Keep up the good work.
Beardbrand For sure next time I stop by I well definitely say hell for you. I have been planning and researching starting a podcast as well as a blog geared toward the outdoor backpacking enthusiast. My niche audience will most likely be someone who has either tried it once or twice or is really interested in getting more information about the trail and exploring the outdoors. Its something I'm passionate about and would like to provide great content to my audience.
hey eric, i watch pretty much every video you have, they are great. unfortunately, i have not tried any of your products, yet, but im looking forward to it. i was SUPER happy when i saw this because ever since i was in highschool, i knew i wanted to start a business. unfortunately for me i do not have the funds to go to college and i was not offered any financial help through grants or loans. so everything i've learned, i have learned on my own through reading, talking to people and i work in a restaurant where i have been working for the same people for about a decade, working my way up from the bottom and now i am a store manager and hoping to be a distract manager and then possibly own a franchise of my own. i dont know how that will work out for me in the long run so i wanted to start my own small business selling products online and would love your advice on the "paperwork" aspect of starting a business. 1)do i need to copywright the name/logo of the company? 2) do i need to apply for a business license right away? 3) you mentioned shopify i believe... which is better, etsy or shopify? 4) is there a program you use that organizes all you information? should i get a program for the accounting side of things and another for the sales, something like a POS system?
***** Your logo with be trademarked by default, it just won't be registered with the government. A registered trademark is stronger than one that isn't registered. In the very beginning stage of business, the most important thing is getting sales in the door and growing the business. That being said, every business is different. If you are running a food truck or restaurant, you'll need to get your license and file with the state. If it's something small, you can start it out as a hobby under a sole proprietorship and then start doing all the paperwork when it shows it can be a full time thing. It's probably too much to say in a UA-cam post and I'd recommend checking out www.reddit.com/r/entrepreneur for more guidance.
Any advice for how to increase or ensure a good volume of business early on in the venture? I'd love to start my own business, but I'm terrified I'll miss a rent payment.
Chuck, I think the best strategy would be to moonlight your business. Keep your ordinary job and start your business on the side. Then continue to grow it until you can afford to leave your main job. That's what I did with Beardbrand.
Just want to say thank you for your donation to the Springfield Queen City beard and mustache Federation beard competition that was heald on the 3rd. I was the lucky auctioneer hthat was able to win your four vices beard oil and mustache wax along with your handmade beardbrand comb.
This was awesome im actually starting now to take the step forward to make my own buisness. I am 20 and just need more income but I am starting a beard oil company no hard feelings though man still love the beardbrand
Beardbrand Hmmm. I am unfortunately stuck in the Midwest. We are kinda behind on some things. I'll have to check it out, looks interesting! I started my yeard on may 7 so I'm stoked about that. I myself am going through nursing school but I hope to start my own business as well.
So what if i want to be in charge of my life, be my own boss, start a business, BUT i have no interest in making money? Is entrepreneurship right for me?
Swag Smoove Well, I'm ginger beard and blond headed. In terms of beards I think it's awesome. I can't speak on the head hair because I don't have red hair - but it's definitely unique and should be worn with pride.
Nowadays, anyone can become an entrepreneur overnight through an online business or trading electronically. There's Wordpress tutorials and a free trading e-book on the Horseshoe Trades website so there's no excuse for anyone.
your right, there is no excuse, either you do it or you don't there is no in between, i work at a job 9-5, listening to somoene telling me i can't leave till my job is done, like i'm her dog, living life day in day out because i didn't have the drive to do something about it, i'm at the point where i feel dead inside because i know in my heart i'm an entrepenur and i'm not living the life i should be living. TIme i did something about it.
You need to create additional income streams. Partner with others and invest in real estate, learn how to trade in the stock market, create or buy an online business or start your own gig on the side. DON'T DEPEND ON A JOB because eventually, you won't be able to.
A job creates the income to buy though, while i start the buisness i need that job to be able to buy what i need to start my buisness though right? I've never invested in real estate before, don't you need alot of money to do that, i'm sorry i'm just a country boy who makes minimum wage just enough to cover bills, then groceries, by then i'm broke....so Jenny with someone like me, is there any hope?
I'm probably going to make this video my alarm clock. Thanks for being so transparent during your entrepreneurial journey. BEARD ON.

That's the beauty of beards; they grow back.
Libertarian to boot. Each video I'm liking you more and more!

How's the progress been

It's the best feeling not having to ask for permission to take time off.

What's the name of the blog you referenced at the end? I couldn't catch the word before entrepreneurship... Thanks.

Thank you as always Danny!
Totally off topic but what is that glass thing?
That's not really off topic. It's called a chemex, and it's a type of way to brew coffee. Fairly popular out here in the Northwest.

do you really believe anyone can become an entrepeneur?
Yes, not everyone can do it on a large scale, but almost anyone can start a one-person operation.
your right, there is no excuse, either you do it or you don't there is no in between, i work at a job 9-5, listening to somoene telling me i can't leave till my job is done, like i'm her dog, living life day in day out because i didn't have the drive to do something about it, i'm at the point where i feel dead inside because i know in my heart i'm an entrepenur and i'm not living the life i should be living.
