- "Urchin" is a 34 key ergonomic keyboard designed by me. It's a wireless only build that features native support for the nice!view screens.

For SMD components, I'd use flux and tweezers to place them, plus my aged eyes need a magnifying glass for SMD components! A lot of the SMD joints in the video look 'cold' as it doesn't look like the pads heated up enough for the solder to flow on to them properly. The through-hole soldering was much, much better. The reason I mention extra flux, is that once you've pre-soldered the pad, the flux in the solder will disappear, and this makes it much harder to melt the solder and transfer heat to the solder and thus pad/component. Anyway, lovely board and nice video!
I would really recommend usig lead free HASL and solder for environmental and health reasons, especially when going plateless. Don't want to have lead on your fingers from using your keyboard.
Wonder how bad that is for ones health. Never thought about it too much…like when using the keyboard or moving it some lead might land on the hands right? But is it an issue in such a small quantity? (Serious question I just have no clue)
@@sighup124it really shouldn’t be an issue simply touching it. But I can’t speak on how dangerous the actual soldering process is. Probably best to avoid using it if you can.
That is a gorgeous-looking keyboard. Thank you for sharing! What keycaps are you using?

My boards should be here early next week, I can't wait to get one together!!
Same bought brother. I’m moving from a Kinesis Advantage360 Pro.
@@codingdesk3637 I've been using this board for naer two weeks now, it's perfection.
Hi@@codingdesk3637, I'm guessing you have used the Urchin a lot by now. Did you stick to it or did you go back to the Kinesis... I'm trying to decide between the two now
Amazing work Kyek, eres un grande!!
I don’t know why, but many build videos skip over battery soldering. Thank you for the instruction.
I just received a few sweep PCBs… looks like this is the going on my list as I want to use the nice!view too.
I also have a dedicated video about batteries if you need a more detailed explanation
I love your dialect! Much love, DaMarco
Hell ya man this looks great. I built my nano sweep because of you
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this Kyek, I was originally going to build a 42 key bare pcb wireless choc Corne keyboard but now I think I'll be building this instead.
I'm curious to know if you have tried using conformal coating or plasti dip spray to protect the bottom part of bare pcb keyboards before. Do you think it's necessary or not (if the board will also be used outside home)?
Also, thanks for sharing a working config as well! Keep up the great work!
Yes I bring it to work, the only think I do to carry the keyboard is remove the screens and leave them at home. They would need additional protection to travel, and I am working on providing this soon.
For the bottom of the PCB I always just use some 3M rubber stickers, but currently I'm waiting for a tray case that I ordered, if it works fine I will add it to the repository for everyone to print and use.
Ohh I see, I'll be extra careful in handling the nice!view displays then. Thanks!
Hi, nice build!
What key caps do you use? It was hard to hear in the video.
Great job as allways!

Great keyboard! Love the design and the logo :) Where did you buy the LDSA keycaps?
From Qweebs, but the store has since closed down. You will be able to find them again on keyboard stores when the version with legends will be manufactured. Join the Lowprokb store discord if you want to stay updated.
Can you give the link to where you buy the keycaps?
can you link the soldering iron / solder you use ? any other materials you recommend as well?
Hmm... I was planning to use the !Niceview screens on my Sweep Bling MX. So it doesn't support them? Or is the constraint just for the regular Ferris Sweep?
I'm not super familiar with this stuff but it looks like there are no OLED pins on Sweep Bling MX's pcb
Love the brain shape 🤣
Funny that you say that, someone recently made a version that looks even more like a brain! github.com/Wesztman/brain
Hi Kyek, I’m new to this era but I’m curious that can we use Pi Pico W instead of nice!nano for wireless build ?
The Pi Pico is bigger. Your would have to modify the PCB to make it work. You should also check first if it is supported officially by zmk firmware
Nice!
Awesome! is there a way to display layers layouts on the screen while learning the layouts? :)
At the moment this is not possible. I would recommend printing your blank layout on paper and filling it in pencil so you can update your cheat sheet while you improve your firmware to better fit your needs
@@KyekOfficial Thank you, cant wait for my keyboard to arrive :)
@@SOGSEAL You ordered one? Nice!
What did you end up using the screens for?
I can see what bluetooth profile I'm on at all times, and I can see if the keyboard is connected or not (helpful after waking it from sleep), which layer I'm on and the battery levels.
Totally makes sense, the layer information would be so nice
I built my sweep with nice!nano following your guides, thanks for these awesome videos man!
Quick question about the Urchin: how well do choc switches fit into hotswap sockets? I'm worried they might come out too easily since there's no switch plate on this board. My other board with mx switches and no plate come out way too easy so wanted to ask
I'll make a switch plate for it very soon so you don't have to worry about it
@@KyekOfficial oh that'd be great! I do really enjoy the minimal look of not having a plate, but I carry the boards around a lot so can't have switches poping out all the time
I’m kinda new to this, so sorry if this question sounds stupid: Why would the choc switches not fit in well in the hot swap sockets?
@@Goooogle don't worry, questions are welcome. The choc switches fit well in the sockets but it's not a permanent connection like soldering, so it's possible to have a switch fall out from the PCB.
But if you have a plate then the switches are all secured in their place.
@@Goooogle basically what Kyek said. I stressed choc switches because I've only ever used mx switches before, which I know can fall out of their sockets, but I thought maybe choc switches are tighter so wanted to make sure
Does the direction of the choc hotswap sockets matter?
They do have a direction but it doesn't really matter
do you know any service that would build this (paid of course)?
You can buy prebuilt keyboard similar to this one on beekeeb store. But they don't carry this specific design at the moment.
@@KyekOfficial thank you! such a pity. Hope it will come back
@@homiezurich6681 I don't think they ever had it in stock, because there are a lot of similar designs already like the Sweep/Swoop. I recommend having a look on their site to see if you find something that you like.
If you really want an Urchin I think you would have to try and build one yourself. It's nothing too difficult but you can judge for yourself if you think you will be able to build one.
Why are you not using a case for this keyboard? Isn't it bad to leave the PCB exposed?
It's safe to use without a case, just add some rubber feet so it doesn't slide.
However I am currently using it with a tray case, I plan to release it soon on github as well.
@@KyekOfficial Have you considered adding tenting and a wrist rest?
@@Goooogle tenting is supported via splitkb tenting puck (but not with the case). The wrist rest isn't needed because the keyboard is so flat.
for nice view can it be replaced with normal oled?
Basically no. Documentation is here: zmk.dev/docs/features/displays
Also a regular OLED would drain the battery super fast. The nice!view has almost zero impact on battery life.
@@KyekOfficial ah oke, i think ill skip nice view, bz out of stock, thank you
@@prayogosantoso2129 yeah, the first place that should restock it is typeractive.xys. It's the storefront of the people that created it
Not beginner friendly sounds like a direction challenge.
