For anyone who's learning the london, this is a goldmine, Pokimane is asking good questions too, goddamn
She has a natural talent for self improvement. She knows her short comings, and inquires to improve them. A rare talent. Especially done as frequently as she does.
Just started learning the London a few days ago and here is the videos
And I love how hikaru is always like... *CONFUSED*
Can you play the London system as Black same way Hikaru teaches it as white ?
@@sayance8 no. You are almost always to late with your moves. Notice how hikaru was stating that the square cant be reinforced in time... well it can with white peices.

The most expensive gun in chess is the "Smith and Wesley" . Only used for taking down world champions 🙂.

Honestly I’m waiting for one of the streamer tournaments where it’s a throwaway or meme game and someone busts out the bongcloud for the memes.
This is such good coaching tbh that you're just giving out to people here. God's work you're doing Hikaru, thank you for that
Amazing. There are a lot of amazing chess lessons on UA-cam but this one is hands down the best. Principled, strategic, practical, taking counters into account. Thank you two!!
Kind of following her character in many games, it’s obvious Poki is an aggressive player, she wants to always play the aggro move but lacks the confidence to execute, but you can tell it’s her style of play based on her questions and thoughts on general rules of thumb
This reminds me of when Poki was learning TFT from Scarra. She really is an attentive learner.
He's thinking, this move is super obvious.
heard she majored in engineering she must be smart !
This is sooo good. You get the idea of why you really play that opening. The challenge that I see for Poki is how she maintains the lead if the enemy blunders from one of those orders mentioned. It's good if the enemy loses a queen but if it's a knight or bishop, I think it's difficult for a beginner to find ideas for an attack that could win the game. I see Poki's playing style to be very meticulous and very defensive at times that could lead her often to find the best moves. So, just like Hikaru said, she has to be confident making those moves because then she might lose a lot of time thinking.
imagine if poki's opponent prepared traps against london system
Really cool to see some really popular streamers getting into chess and it's really amazing you teach them chess and help them involve :)
Chess is proof that there should be only one op player in Valorant in a team.
so if you already have a queen you shouldn't promote your pawn to a queen? which is basically not picking up an op on the floor to "promote your weapon".
5 op 5 duelist meta
@@idk-qt4jy well in ches the op is powerful yet very situational. Whilst the queen is just good. So to answer your question if you already have an awper you should not pick up the op but in chess you should almost always promote to queen.
@@gamersoaisis3147 so in other words, chess has absolutely no impact on valorant
Can also consider that other pieces can be useful in their own way, as how sometimes you underpromote.
It's not about just being able to be the MVP, but to help the possible MVP become the MVP.
Hikaru is a great teacher.
That´s by far the best lesson for an opening I´ve ever heard! Listening to a grandmaster answering questions of a beginner ist so great because she asks exactly the same questions that come to my mind. No crazy alternative lines, just basic stuff and repetition! Thank you so much, Hikaru!
I've learned more about the london watching this than the hours of other videos I've watched. Gold
Poki: "Wouldn't moving f2 be bad?"
Hikaru: "Why would playing f2 be bad?"
Poki: "Feingold says never play f2."

This was a freaking masterclass on the London! And so fast paced! 45 mins just flew by.
When hikaru explains how knight f5 is played with the london it just seems unbeatable!
LOVEEE these London lessons with Poki. Just wanted to say.
I legit won a bullet game yesterday using one of the basic mating patterns with the Bishop trade. Like I always knew about moving the bishop back to get the open file if they decide to trade, but I didn't know these specific lines I could use to abuse it because the videos I've watched from other YTers *cough* Levy *cough* only show how to get basic good positions, but not these detailed ways on how to push forward once you get the good positions. It makes so much more sense why the knight is so strong on e5 as well now with the pawn retake pushing the enemy knight away.
Just chefs kiss out there for this content. And no hate towards Levy just a fun poke since ik these two are streamer fam. Man taught me the basic openings I needed to start brainlessly blundering in bullet for funsies.
It's too advanced for a beginner like Pokimane though. She needs to focus on not hanging pieces.
@@InfiniteUniverse88 Do agree that it is an information overload for a beginner.
Love these lessons! Great stuff Mr. Hikaru! Poki has so much potential as a chess player, I think, and you're an amazing player and I know there's some recent drama but compared to some other streamers on the platform I've seen on other categories I have considered you to be pretty positive and show humility. I get it, you're a Super GM. Of course you have some ego. Who can rise up in the chess world without it? I don't know details about some of the stuff Alex and Andrea brought up but the past is the past and based on everything I've seen with you, you're a pretty reasonable man and I think moving forward things can be much better for all parties. I love what you did for chess with pairing up with xqc and now there's so much momentum and I see only great things for the chess world moving forward. I hope that things can be resolved because I love everything Alex and Andrea have done and support them with all my heart. I also support you and it can be saf when there is conflict. I understand conflict is the nature of chess and life but I just hope for all of us that we can move forward and work toward a better tomorrow.
Thanks for the video. I appreciate you going to the details.
When Poki understood the bishop first for the Checkmate pattern at 18 min in, it was sooooo fulfilling, she really showed growth over the two eps.

I'm currently using the London as my white opening, these last two video's are therefore extremely helpfull to me. Appreciate the content a lot, and am looking forward to see what repertoire Hikaru is going to suggest for black.
I suggest you go to Gata Kamsky's channel and watch his London system lectures as he's basically the one who pioneered the London at top level
@@ym276 Thanks for the advice however I've looked briefly at some of his videos and I don't believe I will enjoy his content as much as this format where Hikaru explains the London to Pokimane en Fuslie. The fact that they constantly are encouraged to ask beginner questions, that I myself could also very well ask in those situations, makes this format really informative and a great way to learn and improve my knowledge of this opening system. If you have any advice on video's that resemble this format and this general quality and accessibility I'd greatly appreciate it though.

This is like the best thing ever for someone learning the London. Wanna teach Poki something on the black side? :D
But why would anyone before IM lvl want to learn London? =D It's just absurd. One of the worst openings for learning.
Besides that if you know dude is playing London you just go 1. d4 c5 and from what I have seen London players have no clue how to play Benoni structures. It's counter to London in 1 move, in practical terms at worst as black you will be 0.00 after 15 moves.
London is soooo bad for the beginners xd
Btw. I hope Hikaru secretly teaches her how to cope with 1. ...c5 cuz if her opponents have at least half decent trainers she will face Old Benoni for sure. Most of stuff she learned in London should be worthless in pogchamps.
@@DonFreeq
Well I've got to 950 in Rapid and 900 in Blitz by only playing the London.
@@DonFreeq Yh but she can still go for the same london setup with c3, Bf4,e3 etc. It's not great but at this level, it's a good try and her opponents will have no clue what to do
@@DonFreeq he's obviously going to discuss the counters at some point, but I guess for now just learning the natural development of this opening it's quite good enough considering the average level of her contenders.
You should teach someone how to properly handle and aim a gun firstly, rather than going straight to gunfight strategies and positioning
@@ym276 Well best she can go for is 1. d4 c5 2. c3. Nf6 3. Bc4 Qb6 4. Qc1 cxd4 5. cxd4 Nc6 e3 which is as harmless London as you can get. It's miniscurely worse for white with super dull position. There obviously other lines which Black can go for and which may be more challenging theoretically. Btw. good luck her playing Qc1 if she doesn't know the move. What attacking at London than? :D If her opponent plays on that level 1. ...c5 she has neither attack nor advantage.
Only "true" counter is simply biting and going for Benoni structure, but she will never ever do that.
@Carl Tan
Well you speaking with someone who tends to do the opposite. My first game ever rapid otb I played against some almost 1900 and opened with KG which I won. Come on, losing as 1900 to unrated player in KG is the story to tell not the shitty 60 moves endgame conversion win in boring London.
Edit What's funniest noone later after that 1 round responded with 1. ...e5. Even if there is only a slim chance you don't want to be defeated in KG against unrated guy otb =D Even if you lose you still get some respect for trying while with freaking London even if you win you get close to no respect at all. Having proper reputation is actually very beneficial in chess by psychological terms. If you are London player and you blundered some pawn you just blundered it. It's goner. On the other hand if you are crazy tactician half of your pawn blunders will be not taken. Guys often decide it's not worth the risk. In worst case you will gain at least some time on clock. Besides that against that sort of opponents you rarely try hard for advantage in opening as be safe is way more important while against London player you pick your favorite antilondon line and than treat the guy like a sitting duck. You will never ever get any sort of respect otb by playing London.
London which on low lvl is actually really bad opening due to lack of knowledge how to play against Benoni and inability to make plans, tactics and middlegame overall when you are out of your comfort zone. You see London player? Just do the craziest stuff possible, g5 is welcomed as well if even mildy possible. I have never seen in my whole life London player below 2k who is decent in tactics and dynamics on their respective level. Once you changed the nature of the position from positional to dynamic play you basically won. That's what London does for you. London in fact is one of the worst openings for beginners, because it doesn't learn anything valuable in long run. It simply stops your progress.
It's just an emergency button aka fish instead of the rod where you maybe not lose even though you are really weak. However done harm is enourmous.
Obviously I know it's a freaking Pokimane so no much respect from Hikaru and we teach her London so maybe she somehow doesn't lose. Pay attention that with Negreanu there is nothing like that. There you have mutual respect and no kitty catty stories about overpowered London ;) London is simply for beginner players you don't put any belief in. "Here take a London and gimme those couple bucks" ^^
Doesn't blow your mind those hordes of London players who proudly point out their 900/1000/1100/1200 rating in comment section? Maybe they are still freaking 1100 only because they learned it and still playing? Personally I think so.

It might be my lack of knowledge on the system, but I think previous content that I've studied states that you should recapture with your e-pawn. Could somebody clarify this for me?
There are many lines for a reason dude. Hikaru is teaching a strategy to attack the king castled king side. You might have learned exd4 for a different strategy. But you should follow hikaru's strategy as its more dynamic
Best thumbnail yet
26:26 hikaru evil face
Any idea if hikaru has any videos like this but he discusses black openings? I feel like im much better with white pieces so i could really use specifics on black openings
Very informative stuff! :)
many of these London system explanations focus on the diagonal attacking H7 when the black king is castled on that side. What if the black player just castles queenside? Is the london system then just weaker?
@26:16 Bxh7 seems best? After Qg5, f5, Rh3, f6, Ng6+, Kg8, Nxf8, Bxf8, Qxf6....etc. After Bxh7 I don't see any way of preventing mate after Qg5 regardless e.g, Rg8, Bxg8, Rxg8, Qg5++ or anything else Black can play e.g fxe5, Qg5, f6, Bf5
22:12 and what if black doesnt take, but does G6 to attack white queen, and to close off the diagnonal?
the london system relies the enemy to not move the g or h pawns forward one square so when my opponent plays london i'm just gonna play along and eventually move one of my pawns one square forward
love these videos, learning off what poki is saying has helped me play the london now too :)
4:15 some masters teach cxd4, others exd4 to avoid things like Bb4+, idk
In his lesson with Fusslie he actually recommended to always play exd4 which confused me a bit here. Guess it just doesn't matter too much really
He tells the move accordingly to the player he his teaching... As pokimane is good with attack
@@greatmnn3868 but if you want to attack you play e takes d4...
I'm confused...when he was teaching the London to Leslie he told her to build the "pawn pyramid" so that if c5xd4 you can take with e pawn and have that kind of a pawn structure. Opposite to what he told poki. Is there some difference that I'm not seeing?
I really love hikaru's thumbnails
*He has shocked us with his beautiful thumbnails yet again!*
I have a question tho, what if they play the dutch defense, like d4, then black opens with f5 with the idea of blocking the white bishop from the diagonal towards h7. is this idea still viable?
The thumbnails are underrated. They bring in the views and Hikaru's editor knows that very well.

What if they don't castle or castle Queen side?
Same question here..
Same
I guess just break open the center and take advantage that the king is in the middle of the board
Get rooks and queen to the center at c1, e1, d1 and get the bishops to d3 and e3 and start sniping and work up the middle
One thing I like to do is casting to the opposite side and using my pawns to begin a queenside attack. If a bishop exchange occurs on G3 early on, then I will typically stay in the center and start a queenside attack immediately. Hope that helps!
