Boxbox: "Oh ok, I understand."
Narrator: "He did not."
Boxbox : "Aa... Wakarimashita..."
Narrator : "Uso de aru."
Boxbox: "Will this be on the test tomorrow?"
Hikaru: *straight face* "No, no."

He's totally immune to deadpan humor haha
@@JamesSully such a sharp contrast to the "im trying to mate you" clip in Alexandra's session
box man is unaware pepelaugh
Hikaru is not the type of guy that laugh at a joke only to make another person feel better and people who are unaware would end up in an awkward situation lmao
Hikaru “Right” Nakamura
Exactly.
nah i am pretty sure there is a Christopher in there somewhere

@@leosuperg37 "London"
Did you know the London System is named after a Mr. System
@@leosuperg37 Ever heard of *world war two?*
I love the new chess terminology coming out of the twitch community. "Can we go back to the state after we completed the virgin?" It's actually very easy to remember and a good concept for that style of play rather than specific move sequence. I look forward to watching a chess tournament in 15 years where the commentators unironically point out free juicers.
It won't be. The names aren't arbitrary, they come from famous games or where they were historically played in response to basic openings.
That's not going to happen kid go back to twitch

@@heroricspiritfreinen38 You must be fun at parties.
Don't be so sure. I'm pretty sure that I've already seen "Ice Skater" used right on the dust jacket of Yuri Averbakh's latest chess book, due out any day now. - j q t -
“So now I’m setting up a frappachino...” 😂😂😂
This line gets me every time
Me watching this: Just move there it's so obvious! Bing, bang, bing, bang EZ!
Me playing chess: *loses queen on turn 5*
I believe that is called board or chess blindness. It's easy to look at the board when there's nothing at stake and no timer. Once you're in a game you're gonna be under more pressure. It's probably the biggest cause of losing in lower level chess
Botez gammbit
*oh no* my queen
That first full practice game they played at around the 52:00 mark was some ancient kung fu master stuff
Thanks for timestamp
I think he's given up on xqc after he lost in 6 moves
i think xqc gave up on him by not responding anymore
@@AnhVu-fg9tu xqc probably thinks he is wasting Nakas time tbh
@@AnhVu-fg9tu Would do you mean by ' not responding'? Why does he ignore him?
@@Melkirapsy Yeah I need answers
@@Melkirapsy Hikaru has offered to coach xqc many times but xqc ignored all his offers. The reason he gave on his stream is that he doesn't want to be a "chess andy" and doesn't want his stream to be comprised of mostly chess.
I think hikaru teaching people is way more instructional to the viewer than playing with GMs
I mean logically speaking that makes the most sense too. The average Joe isn't understanding the depth at which Grand Masters are playing at. In general, this is why I believe Hikaru is the best streamer as he explains thoughts/ideas whilst playing. His ability to play speed chess while reading chat and explaining ideas is insane lol
Yes, but I feel like instructing an intermediate player maybe like 1300-1800 would be more educational because both beginners and intermediate players can benefit. But here, pretty much anyone above 800 or 1000 would find it to be a bit slow.
11:51 Is where the real anti-London content begins.
Hikaru needed to emphasize that Knights maneuvering backwards is a common theme in high elo games.
Boxbox kept seeming confused about that concept (as a lot of intermediate players are) - and I wish Hikaru had let him know that Knights re-positioning can be a strong idea in closed games.
@J E fact is that a lot of these guys need supplementary material, like homework for chess basically. Hikaru cannot read their mind to see everything they are lacking in, and that's where it gets difficult to teach.
I absolutely love that Hikaru's thumbnails strongly resemble the thumbnails of videos of people that he's teaching/playing with. Its a really nice touch.

"Ludwig is the other person in your group who is really good" 0-2, going for the 4k consolation prize
To be fair, Boxbox was a strong opponent and a single early game blunder set Ludwig behind in his second game.
@@HappyBeeGamingDon't forget missing the hanging queen. Ludwig should legitimately play blind though or play with the same mindset of when he's blind because I think he goes through the positions of all the pieces in his head and can see things without tunneling his vision.
@@mesmarazin he obviously lost on purpose
Throwing for content
I think by far the best thing to come from the chess boom are the thumbnails for Hikaru's videos.
one can even guess, who is new with chessunderstanding lacking comments.
The clip of Hikaru listing all of the E5 responses and what they're called is so amazing. Never has it been so clearly laid out for me.

I've never heard of boxbox, but he seems like a funny and smart guy. And i like that he also seems genuinely interested to learn the game.
tomschrauwen league of legends player. He one tricks riven
This is excellent man. I remember when I was learning openings in chessgames page I felt a little lost like the apprentice here. Once he gets it I think he can get pretty good, you can tell he was a little embarrassed for not following completely was Hikaru was explaining, but good teaching, really good and understandable.
yeah, also boxbox is a pretty good student too (part of why he is improving quite quickly), he will go back over these vods afterwards.
Same. It feels kind of weird studying openings on your own cause you don’t know the ideas. The teaching is really good and boxbox is such a good listener and student
Watching hikaru explain some of the more advanced concepts makes chess feel so hype. The nuance and deep strategy in the different positions is exciting and much different than learning about forks and beginning tactics
56:00
Ohhhh... I'm beginning to understand
*proceeds to losing queen in the next move
Why not queen h4 tho?
Boxbox: What if he does THAT move? D5.
Hikaru: Well, that's a bad move.
Indeed it is.
20:41 my man said bishop frapachino 🤣🤣
"right Exactly"
This was definitely the video that I found the most useful for me so far, as a ~1300 online player. Hopefully this helps me feel less lost as black sometimes.
Yes, this is a little bit intense for a sub-1200 player: He thinks there are hundreds, or maybe thousands, of variations . . . when in fact, there are many millions! - j q t -
@@quill444
only a few dozen are actually playable in response to what is happening on the board. That's what I always remember
Thank you so much again for knowledge. It's just so fascinating and entertaining to watch a grandmaster teaching people chess.
this actually serves as a great little summary of a whole bunch of different openings and middlegame ideas. Nice video to test yourself and refresh your memory
This is amazing... the patience of this GM to humble himself enough to show someone who knows nothing about the game a step by step breakdown. Big props to Hikaru

Hikaru, This kind of overview is exactly what I need as an 1800 player. I love the commentary on structures and ideas. Please do more! Thank you!
I remember 5 years ago the computer analysis said the best move in one of my games was similar to NF6=>NE8 and honestly I said what the fuck and closed the window and quit chess until now :)

@@josefmalar7837 it's funny no cap
I like Hikaru's genuine deep laugh, makes me laugh, nice to see a sense of humor.
this video was incredibly helpful, thankyou to boxbox for asking the exact right questions
Wow, watching Hikaru Nakamura laugh made my day!😂 54:57
game at 52:00 was great tactics by hikaru, he plays unconventionally which makes him less able to rely on theory, and in a 10 minute game of "who can analyse this position on the board better" hikaru wins every time, great to use his strengths in such an effective way.
I love watching Hikaru teach this kid. He's so happy, it reminds you how passionate he is about the game
Play the opening like a book, the middle game like a wizard, the endgame like a machine.
couldn't you play the opening like a wizard, the middle like a machine and the endgame like a book? . just kidding, only that it's a stupid recycled quote
naka you coached great. I would use the term phrases queenside/kingside more imo they catch on better
You're one of my favorite chess players and I love these segments where you actually teach chess.
This dude is the best student I have ever seen in my life rofl, not only because of the fact that he has top shelf questions (from a newb perspective especially) but because he is funny too.
This is honestly just become a masterclass from hikaru on a number of setups, after the video with Fuslie I'm actually finally considering to add the London system to my repertoire!
Really should if you haven't already. So comfortable against mid rated players
Can’t wait to beat Gata Kamsky and Eric Rosen with this. Ez dubs, right?
Eric Rosen is fucking *shaking*
and magnus!
"No one will play as a grand master in this tournament" is the understatement of the year.
Facts
will this be on the test tomorrow. i love this guy!
Hikaru: “There’s not gonna be a lot of huge blunders...”
PVC: We will see about that
20:42 "bishop frappuccino" lolol
As a novice player I have a lot of respect for boxbox's approach. He asks good questions and learns quickly
I need hikaru to tutor some 1800s that’d be really educational
Naroditski is doing a really good instructional run through the ranks. on twitch his acc is around 1800 right now, breaking down every game at the interesting points. super great educational stuff. daniel's youtube is a couple weeks behind his twitch streams though. Hikaru is really great at concepts, but if you don't understand everything at play, some of what Naka says goes over peoples heads from assuming people know more than they actually do.
Ah yes, the sacred move
*T H E V I R G I N*
Learned quite a bit from this, thank you Naka and student!
Thank you thank you so much for these live lessons although I still have a lot of learning to do even though I've been playing for 10 years plus I would still like to think like a Grandmaster
''Qvc and box box negative talent''
Smthing that I remember when I see PVC lose in six moves and box box blindfolded game .
hikaru's second son gonna have to do it
What a good content Hikaru! Thanks!!!
Brilliant minds are not always great teachers...Hikaru is. 👍
Ooo 1hour hikamaru video..this gonna be great 🧐
master hikaru hope you upload the continuation of the bongcloud speedrun it's really fun to watch. thanks
Hikaru I just wanted to say you single handedly helped me get into chess. Thank you!!!
The Art of The Checkmate by Renaud & Kahn is a good one for the mating patterns
22:28 boxbox: i wanna say i ignore this threat and set up the "frappucino"
Ah yes. The classic frappucino maneuver with the bishops.
39:44 I so want Hikaru to go 'This is lost' on move 1 because he's hikaru and boxbox has no chance of winning.
Oh damn free coaching from Nakamura i already learned so much
This is Gold content for every amateur chess player, learning a lot here
Boxbox: "oh so i'm setting up the Bishop Frappucchino on the other side?"
me: dies on the spot
these Hikaru teaches streamer videos are gold
What a great teacher, Hikaru!!!

Has this dude played before? Even though he's inexperienced, he asks a lot of great questions and picks up on ideas very quickly.
box box took chess lessons as a kid
Thanks for this valuable lesson Hikaru we ‘re love you
Hikaru withdrew from clutch chess just to coach streamers in chess. Class!
Did he? I thought he got knocked by Wesley so?
BoxBox: This is like an eye exam...1...2.
Hikaru: 👀
As a 1600 player this is awesome. Naka is a great instructor!
this is really helpful instruction thanks to both the excellent master and open minded student.
At 25:50 the music stops right as BoxBox perplexes Hikaru
I appreciate the fact that they made a boxbox style thumbnail
Has a senior, I'm now a fan of Hikaru. he's a very good instructor, teaching beginners while being a world-class player amazing. I can only wish you the very best.
Ironic, the video barely covers how to beat the London system
Yeah everyone is praising it and I'm like... no that covered nothing
Same
As black you move your knight and then pawn to C4. That’s all you need to know to move forward
52:33 when Hikaru does this, it means the game is over.
Boxbox is a breath of fresh air
the moment he challenges hikaru to checkmate him or a sub donation hahaha, man this vid is great!
Very late in this - element of time out of the Scandinavian - very interesting to talk about how one side might waste moves and how to get an advantage that way...
He is drowning in the ocean of opening variations!
My opening game is weak af so I use London System every time I play white. But now Hikaru exposed it's weakness, I guess it's time to study openings😭
Love Hikaru but sometimes I feel like he thinks there are only 2 levels of chess players: newbs and Grandmasters. Always saying something like "unless you're a Grandmaster this situation doesn't apply" but he's often talking about something that is still totally relevant in my games at the 1800-2200 level.
I think that’s because he has most experience with those two groups and maybe doesn’t know many players in that range you mentioned. I also am in that range so I feel you though.
Yeah you're right, when you're at the top you could develop that mindset
Well, as you can see in his speed run: 2200 players are still noobs compared to him. I'm sure he gets the difference because he's talking about them playing real chess, but they obviously lack understanding compared to him. (although i wish I had that much understanding..)
@@torontounionstation I'm sure it's similar in most games with a competitive aspect to it. If your opponent plays at a level below your bracket they're all noobs to you

Hikaru's anti-London:
1...Nf6, 2...c5, 3...Qb3

How else am I supposed to defuse that weird bomb my opponent gives me
Lmao
I agree
The finegold is strong in this one
18:32 This is so funny
Well Eric Rosen did beat Naka in the london because he refused to draw iirc
Bishop Frappaccino! 😂😂

There's a trap variation for black to London opening. Something like pawn h5
