@@AnhVu-fg9tu Would do you mean by ' not responding'? Why does he ignore him?
@@Melkirapsy Yeah I need answers
@@Melkirapsy Hikaru has offered to coach xqc many times but xqc ignored all his offers. The reason he gave on his stream is that he doesn't want to be a "chess andy" and doesn't want his stream to be comprised of mostly chess.
Me watching this: Just move there it's so obvious! Bing, bang, bing, bang EZ!
Me playing chess: *loses queen on turn 5*
I believe that is called board or chess blindness. It's easy to look at the board when there's nothing at stake and no timer. Once you're in a game you're gonna be under more pressure. It's probably the biggest cause of losing in lower level chess
Botez gammbit
*oh no* my queen
I love the new chess terminology coming out of the twitch community. "Can we go back to the state after we completed the virgin?" It's actually very easy to remember and a good concept for that style of play rather than specific move sequence. I look forward to watching a chess tournament in 15 years where the commentators unironically point out free juicers.
It won't be. The names aren't arbitrary, they come from famous games or where they were historically played in response to basic openings.
That's not going to happen kid go back to twitch

This line gets me every time
I absolutely love that Hikaru's thumbnails strongly resemble the thumbnails of videos of people that he's teaching/playing with. Its a really nice touch.
I think hikaru teaching people is way more instructional to the viewer than playing with GMs
I mean logically speaking that makes the most sense too. The average Joe isn't understanding the depth at which Grand Masters are playing at. In general, this is why I believe Hikaru is the best streamer as he explains thoughts/ideas whilst playing. His ability to play speed chess while reading chat and explaining ideas is insane lol
Yes, but I feel like instructing an intermediate player maybe like 1300-1800 would be more educational because both beginners and intermediate players can benefit. But here, pretty much anyone above 800 or 1000 would find it to be a bit slow.
Hikaru needed to emphasize that Knights maneuvering backwards is a common theme in high elo games.
Boxbox kept seeming confused about that concept (as a lot of intermediate players are) - and I wish Hikaru had let him know that Knights re-positioning can be a strong idea in closed games.
@J E fact is that a lot of these guys need supplementary material, like homework for chess basically. Hikaru cannot read their mind to see everything they are lacking in, and that's where it gets difficult to teach.
this actually serves as a great little summary of a whole bunch of different openings and middlegame ideas. Nice video to test yourself and refresh your memory
Hikaru: “There’s not gonna be a lot of huge blunders...”
PVC: We will see about that
"Ludwig is the other person in your group who is really good" 0-2, going for the 4k consolation prize
To be fair, Boxbox was a strong opponent and a single early game blunder set Ludwig behind in his second game.
@@HappyBeeGamingDon't forget missing the hanging queen. Ludwig should legitimately play blind though or play with the same mindset of when he's blind because I think he goes through the positions of all the pieces in his head and can see things without tunneling his vision.
@@mesmarazin he obviously lost on purpose
Throwing for content
I think by far the best thing to come from the chess boom are the thumbnails for Hikaru's videos.
one can even guess, who is new with chessunderstanding lacking comments.
I remember 5 years ago the computer analysis said the best move in one of my games was similar to NF6=>NE8 and honestly I said what the fuck and closed the window and quit chess until now :)

@@josefmalar7837 it's funny no cap
This was definitely the video that I found the most useful for me so far, as a ~1300 online player. Hopefully this helps me feel less lost as black sometimes.
Yes, this is a little bit intense for a sub-1200 player: He thinks there are hundreds, or maybe thousands, of variations . . . when in fact, there are many millions! - j q t -
@@quill444
only a few dozen are actually playable in response to what is happening on the board. That's what I always remember
This is excellent man. I remember when I was learning openings in chessgames page I felt a little lost like the apprentice here. Once he gets it I think he can get pretty good, you can tell he was a little embarrassed for not following completely was Hikaru was explaining, but good teaching, really good and understandable.
yeah, also boxbox is a pretty good student too (part of why he is improving quite quickly), he will go back over these vods afterwards.
Same. It feels kind of weird studying openings on your own cause you don’t know the ideas. The teaching is really good and boxbox is such a good listener and student
BoxBox: This is like an eye exam...1...2.
Hikaru: 👀
Boxbox: "oh so i'm setting up the Bishop Frappucchino on the other side?"
me: dies on the spot
My opening game is weak af so I use London System every time I play white. But now Hikaru exposed it's weakness, I guess it's time to study openings😭
You don't really understand how in depth Hikaru's mind is when it comes to Chess until you watch one of these teaching videos. Man knows A LOT.
You do understand. It's in the title, GM means grand master.
He does know a lot but what he is teaching here is pretty basic any intermediate player knows
@@carlosacms that's because he's teaching beginner level players.
@@salekhossain1582 I never asked you what GM meant. Also not all GM's are equal in strength so your condescending point doesn't really matter to me. Bye Felecia

As black you move your knight and then pawn to C4. That’s all you need to know to move forward
Love Hikaru but sometimes I feel like he thinks there are only 2 levels of chess players: newbs and Grandmasters. Always saying something like "unless you're a Grandmaster this situation doesn't apply" but he's often talking about something that is still totally relevant in my games at the 1800-2200 level.
I think that’s because he has most experience with those two groups and maybe doesn’t know many players in that range you mentioned. I also am in that range so I feel you though.
Yeah you're right, when you're at the top you could develop that mindset
Well, as you can see in his speed run: 2200 players are still noobs compared to him. I'm sure he gets the difference because he's talking about them playing real chess, but they obviously lack understanding compared to him. (although i wish I had that much understanding..)
@@torontounionstation I'm sure it's similar in most games with a competitive aspect to it. If your opponent plays at a level below your bracket they're all noobs to you
"The Virgin defense>" The Vienna defense... lmao boxbox
I've never heard of boxbox, but he seems like a funny and smart guy. And i like that he also seems genuinely interested to learn the game.
tomschrauwen league of legends player. He one tricks riven
Ah yes. The classic frappucino maneuver with the bishops.
Wow, watching Hikaru Nakamura laugh made my day!😂 54:57
hikaru's second son gonna have to do it
ofc Hikaru did this. He hates the London system with a passion. You could make a compilation video of all the times he's mentioned hating the London.
Can’t wait to beat Gata Kamsky and Eric Rosen with this. Ez dubs, right?
Eric Rosen is fucking *shaking*
and magnus!
lmao I empathize so much with boxbox just like "oh yeah, obviously that was super bad for him because uhhhh yeah you just retreat the knight. and that's uhhhh good for me."
these Hikaru teaches streamer videos are gold
Thank you so much again for knowledge. It's just so fascinating and entertaining to watch a grandmaster teaching people chess.
Watching hikaru explain some of the more advanced concepts makes chess feel so hype. The nuance and deep strategy in the different positions is exciting and much different than learning about forks and beginning tactics
Oh damn free coaching from Nakamura i already learned so much
Damn it Hikaru, I play the London System
Rip jk
Rip elo
I play the London system = I don't know how to play openings lmao
@@heroricspiritfreinen38 not funny, here are lot of chess players. we know how to play openings.... yet noone explains them to us on GM level. a pan lakomy jistě zvládne hrát londýnský systém i nadále.
I really like the "is it over?" type of thing. Could make for some awesome videos in the future.
This video taught me a lot of things.
How to beat the London system was not one of them.
you cannot simly beat a good development and plan (definition of every system).
Boxbox: What if he does THAT move? D5.
Hikaru: Well, that's a bad move.
Indeed it is.
Wait did Boxbox just say he has no object permanence at 1:04:28? Is he talking about in chess or in real life? Because I don't know if that's possible. I don't see him explain it anywhere else so idk if he's just joking but I'm just really confused now lol. Like idk how you can function in normal life without knowing about anything that's not in your immediate view. That seems like a crippling disability that would fundamentally change your whole perception of life.
Yeah has to be joking or just talking about chess because you can’t have that disability and be able to realize it
@@Percpopper44 He's just joking with dry self deprecating humour, making fun of his inability to recognize the possibilities of all the pieces on the board, almost as though he cannot conceive of their place in the game as a continued existence but as a seemingly mystical entity that appears out of nowhere to attack him even though in reality it has been there and visible the whole time. He's joking, but Hikaru didn't register it as such because his delivery was completely straight, you just have to know by the absurdity of his words that it's a joke, I just recognize it as I've seen a similar pattern of joking where you compare your own mental abilities to basic concepts that toddlers develop in other people as well.
"No one will play as a grand master in this tournament" is the understatement of the year.
Facts
I appreciate the fact that they made a boxbox style thumbnail
game at 52:00 was great tactics by hikaru, he plays unconventionally which makes him less able to rely on theory, and in a 10 minute game of "who can analyse this position on the board better" hikaru wins every time, great to use his strengths in such an effective way.
39:44 I so want Hikaru to go 'This is lost' on move 1 because he's hikaru and boxbox has no chance of winning.
The clip of Hikaru listing all of the E5 responses and what they're called is so amazing. Never has it been so clearly laid out for me.
e4
I like Hikaru's genuine deep laugh, makes me laugh, nice to see a sense of humor.
What does the Bishop frappuccino taste like
This is amazing... the patience of this GM to humble himself enough to show someone who knows nothing about the game a step by step breakdown. Big props to Hikaru
Has this dude played before? Even though he's inexperienced, he asks a lot of great questions and picks up on ideas very quickly.
box box took chess lessons as a kid
Damn Hikaru teaching Hikaru at 0:00 that's next level
This guy has no clue who you are or how amazing you are. Cant even do an ounce of research on who is taking time out of their day to teach him.

Well Eric Rosen did beat Naka in the london because he refused to draw iirc

He is drowning in the ocean of opening variations!
Brilliant minds are not always great teachers...Hikaru is. 👍
Hikaru withdrew from clutch chess just to coach streamers in chess. Class!
Did he? I thought he got knocked by Wesley so?
Lol boxbox is calling a “fee-en-Kheto, fianchetto” a frapachino😂😂lmao
Bruh... delegate this. He is SO far from needing the help of one of the greatest players in history. "Do you know the King's Indian?" "No, what is a Sicilian?" Facepalm.
It blows my mind how naive this kid is...."there is no way that he can checkmate me in 20 moves".....hes a super GM that can play 30 games simul
and win them all.....blindfolded!

I need hikaru to tutor some 1800s that’d be really educational
Naroditski is doing a really good instructional run through the ranks. on twitch his acc is around 1800 right now, breaking down every game at the interesting points. super great educational stuff. daniel's youtube is a couple weeks behind his twitch streams though. Hikaru is really great at concepts, but if you don't understand everything at play, some of what Naka says goes over peoples heads from assuming people know more than they actually do.
I kept hoping they would circle back to the London counter. Quite clickbaity
As a novice player I have a lot of respect for boxbox's approach. He asks good questions and learns quickly
Ooo 1hour hikamaru video..this gonna be great 🧐
This dude is the best student I have ever seen in my life rofl, not only because of the fact that he has top shelf questions (from a newb perspective especially) but because he is funny too.
What's funny is that people were trying the London on me and I reviewed the games and figured it out on my own. At first they were getting easy mates because I was clueless. Then I realized it was all because I castled too soon (as everyone constantly tells you to do) and I took their bishop opening the rook file. My easy solution was still to take their bishop but castle on the long side. Without their bishop and having two rooks back-to-back on an open rook file, I turned the tables on this London system. Now every clown that tries the London because it offers quick mates on the unsuspecting.....I destroy them because they are lost when I don't castle on the side they are focusing all their pieces.
this guy's playing in tournaments? I'm just playing recreationally and I know most of this. I thought I sucked. I guess it's time to sign up for my first tourney!
Are you perhaps unaware of what tournament he's playing in?
