Thank you so much for this video. I knew that Richie was young that fateful day, but I did not realize just how young he was.
You are the only channel I am subscribed to that can bring me to tears in such a short period of time.
You can connect people together and to the past and to their shared emotions; and that is true talent and empathy on your behalf. Thank you for that!

3 hits in an 8 month career. Countless musicians have devoted their entire lives/careers to be fortunate enough to accomplish even 1 hit. To have to quit High School to be in the circles of people such as Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, not to mention American Bandstand. All of this success at just 17, man it blows my mind of what more could have been. The potential and possibilities! I was at a slumber party and we had the radio on and they interrupted a record to announce the plane crash. I remember it as the middle of the night, but in reading about it in recent years some accounts have stated no one knew what happened until the farmer who owned the field spotted the wreckage after the sun came up. It was a long time ago. My gracious he'd be 75, had he lived.

My kin are scattered all over East Texas, Paris, Mineola, Texarkana,Gum Springs, etc. I was born in Longview, but was a Navy brat so only spent time at home when my Daddy was at sea. Unfortunately I've never seen Lodi, TX. I took my pseudonym from the CCR song "Stuck in Lodi Again" after I found out there was a Lodi in Texas, too. Love that song. Wish I could see Lodi, TX. The King of Latin Rock/pop. He paved the way for every Latin artist who have come after him. Everyone, from Los Lobos, Father Santana, to Ricky Martin. Even La Reigna, Selena. My generation sadly got to feel that loss when Aaliyah passed in a plane crash in 2001, and then with Jenny Rivera a few years later, also in a plane crash. Ritchie is still a legend for us.

  • @TonyCastillo666

Ritchie’s always been my favorite. Great video. As guitar player myself. Ritchies tabs and chords were very unlike anything at the time. He had the advantage of being Mexican and learning scales and rhythms from his culture. Spanish scales that were only past down through heritage. Plus the blues and soul Rhythms he had. Ritchie is very very underrated. There’s very little we know about him. But what I can tell you from everything I’ve seen and read about Ritchie is that the day the plane burned to the ground, that was the day we lost so much creativity, individualism, and passion for music which Ritchie carried so noticeably.

Such a well researched, beautiful video! I love the way you incorporated the footage of Valens from "Go, Johnny Go!" Most versions of that video on UA-cam are often low quality and only include the same clip of him singing, whereas you diversified the clips and showed high quality versions of scenes that aren't on UA-cam. He was taken away from us far too soon, and your video is so atmospheric and really immerses the viewer into the 50s when they watch it. Amazing job!

I loved the song "Ooh My Head" before, I haven't listened to it in a few years until watching La Bamba. I was wrongly under the impression that Ritchie was at least in his early 20s. 17, I can't believe how young and talented that was. And now it's 60+ years ago. Incredible. All the musicians that have been taken away too soon are always the ones that would've pioneered the greatest in music, instead of just influencing through their successors.

Everytime I hear the story of the conditions the musicians had to endure on the winter dance party tour, it reminds me of some gigs we played up in northern Michigan in mid winter in the late 70s. It was so cold our vans would not supply enough heat. During that whole little so called tour, I thought about Buddy, Ritchie, and J.P.. It was horrible. We made it though and joked how true musicians would toss 5 thousand dollars of equipment in vans worth around 5 hundred dollars each, and drive hundreds of miles in freezing cold to play a gig and make a hundred bucks... "NUTZ"

Thank you for that lovely narration. I was born 10 months after their deaths, so the information that I've gleaned has been thru documentaries and movies. What a tragedy. The Big Bopper's son and I are the same age, give or take abt 8 months. He never met his dad, until they exhumed the body. I am glad they left a legacy of music for us late baby boomers to hear, along with other generations. Ritchie had the face of an angel.

Re watched it on Ritchies birthday.this past May with my kiddos and that haunting feeling came back - instead of just shaking it off like I did when I was young, my boys 10 and 7 who are self taught on guitar decided to learn all the lyrics of their favorite Ritchie Valens songs and created a medley 😭😇 they posted a little video in his honor this past June 5 on the lunar eclipse.. we prayed for him and thanked him for inspiring my boys with his music. And to think he only boarded that small plane after winning a coin toss! That saved guitarist Tommy Allsup's life but cost Valens his. The Beechcraft Bonanza (sometimes called the doctor killer) actually has a slightly lower fatality rate than its similar sized counterparts. The doctors and others who've gotten killed did so mostly from pilot error, as was the case for Ritchie's ill fated flight. The pilot was 21 and had little to no instrument flight experience. I blame his boss, the owner of Dwyer Flight Services, for knowing this and letting him take that flight.

I can only imagine his sheer terror and instant regret as he realized the plane was going down and only after a mere five minutes into the flight. Pobre Ritchie. I also didn't realize he was only seventeen when he died. What an insanely talented young man. I can only imagine the devastation his family felt and the world of his fans. I also noticed how the narrator seem to choke up at the end which gives this video A touch of humanity, well done!!!! Rest in peace and love, Richard Valenzuela. 🖤🙏🖤

Excellent video. If you look over Ritchie's right shoulder at 4:43, that's Waylon Jennings. He played in Buddy Holly's band, and gave up his seat on that flight to someone else (possibly Ritchie?), I think because they were sick. Waylon would be a good video as well.

    • @Alpha11

    • @dskyyksd

Buddy Holly's band on the tour included Waylon Jennings on bass, Tommy Allsup on lead guitar, and Carl Bunch on drums. Bunch had to drop out of the tour two nights earlier and check into a hospital because of frostbite. That left enough room on a small plane for all three remaining members and probably got Buddy to thinking about flying. Waylon gave his spot to the Big Bopper because the Bopper was sick with the flu. Ritchie Valens kept asking Tommy to flip a coin for his spot until Tommy gave in. Ritchie won the toss.

    • @Drummer_Jeff83
      @Drummer_Jeff83 5 років тому

I have heard it was Tommy Alsip (sp?) who lost the coin toss. He was about to get on the plane when buddy asked him to go back inside to double-check that they got all their gear and whatnot out of the venue. He then spotted Ritchie signing autographs, and then the coin toss happened there.
Waylon Jennings gave up his seat to the Big Bopper, who was sick. In the movie, Ritchie was the one who was sick, but in real life it was the Big Bopper
