Omar Rodriguez Lopez on Boss guitar effects

- We chat to Omar after a packed gig at Sticky Mike's Frog bar in Brighton, he tells us about the Boss 'Corner stones' of his board, why he loves the SL-20 slicer and saving up for a DD-5 digital delay with Jeremy Ward and putting it on literally everything!
There is no doubt that Omar Rodriguez Lopez is a talented guy, he's a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, film director, writer and actor but his imaginative guitar work and extensive use of effects for cult band At The Drive-in and modern prog legends The Mars Volta is the real reason us pedal geeks love to get to the front of the gig to check out what's on his pedal board. Now with alternative rock band Bosnian Rainbows, and with a slightly less elaborate pedal board he's on the road with a less is more approach... for now.
wow. Omar saying that he uses the pedals to hide his "lack of hability".
that really got me. he plays better than most guitarists today. respect
omar Rodriguez never get old ...
This comment didn't age well haha
"Now, I like to keep it simple." Still has 20 effects on his board.
its much simpler than his older setups
Omar seems much more relaxed and happy then he has been in a little while
It's funny, he really comes off as disinterested and 'above it all' a lot of the time when talking about the band in general. (Not saying that's how he actually is, just how he appears) But get him talking about the instruments and he's more than willing to discuss every little detail and be really humble about it all. Interesting guy for sure.
Yeh i know what you mean. Does it mean he's a tad selfish and is only really interested in talking about himself? Could be. I think his performances during that ATDI comeback tour were terrible and really unprofessional. I realise his mother died but that just isn't fair for the tens of thousands of people that turned up. He's clearly an emotional chap and that's probably half the reason why he's so good.
I absolutely love this guy!!!!!
Boss pedals are very well constructed. The knobs, footswitch and in/out jacks are NOT built into the circuit board. They use heavy wire to float those components, making the pedal easy to modify or repair. Now I see why technicians love them.
Slicers are rad. You become one with the rhythm & the rhythm becomes one with you.
Apparantly it's possible to achieve astral travel and religious liminal experiences through extensive meditative Slicer usage
0:17 - 0:41 he stayed for that long with his eyes closed. i actually went and searched on google if he went blind im not just poking sticks at him
I noticed that too, haha
Omar: Todays Jimi Hendrix
Chris Pullin True but the only thing they don't have in common is Jimi's recognition over Omar.
Onmysheet Yeah Omar hasn't died yet!
How is he 40?!
Very nice interview
The Slicer really is a badass effect. Especially if you run MIDI.
Wait he has the Rainbow Machine on his live pedalboard? That would be awesome thing to see in action
awesome!
2:04 rainbow machine~
Omar keeping it simple at 6:16, still has 8 pedals for his set up.
GUITAR IS A BEAUTY....CREATIVITY IS MORE CRUCIAL THAN TECHNICALITY'''HAVING ROLAND EQUIPMENT IS A BIG PLUS!
WTF!? Was that John Frusciante's voice in the background at 4:51 !!!?
John Doe Yeah John played with them several times both as a backup and as an additional guitar. Flea also played trumpet for some of their songs. ;)
+John Doe It shure is him :D
The SL-20 shares some similarities to the Moog MURF.
How does he do that echo effect at 2:36?
What's the big red pedal at the front of his board? Don't recognise it.
Blackout Effectors Whetstone. It's an analog phaser. I've got one myself.
Thanks, it sounds incredible.
blackout effectors whetstone phaser
