What is Tantra?- A real explanation

  • The word 'Tantra' has for many people become entirely identified with gaining sexual pleasure. But this understanding misses the whole essence of the tradition. Tantra is really about using and transforming the physical world around us so that we can realise our divine nature.
    Most aspects of Hinduism today has some form of tantric practice. There is Mantra, Yantras and Mudras as well as tantric forms of Yoga. But where we really see the greatness of this tradition is in the Hindu Temple. Through a series of rituals material matter in the form of an image becomes 'divinised' into the embodiment of God. In this way we can appreciate that Tantra, is not about hedonistic pleasure, but is about living with the divine.

    Simple basic translation:-
    Mantra = Chant, slogan, Prayer.
    Tantra = Technique, method, mechanism.
    Yantra = Machine.
    Mudra = Posture, position.

    Oh, this is beautifully put together! I was struggling to explain the Aghori people and their practices to my western colleagues who had seen Raza Aslan’s CNN documentary and was failing miserably. I can share this one with them now.

      It is very easy to understand the metaphysical underpinnings of what the aghoris do. All is one there is no good and bad or holy and unholy. everything is holy. I think it is that simple. But should you try and justify or apologize for what they do? It is beyond the pale for most Indians. Most hindus would not try and justify their practices. I really don't think that people who practice mainstream dharmic religion need to explain or justify bizarre fringe sects that horrify most hindus.

      Hᴜꜱᴛʟᴇ Lᴏʏ Yeah, but it’s a bit difficult to fathom for them that we don’t even eat beef in the mainstream because we see the cow as holy, but aghoris resort to cannibalism (or they did in that documentary) and we don’t condemn them or disassociate them from Hinduism.

    • @sirfin459

      @@theodore8178 um, aghora doesn't do anything horrifying. They don't harm anyone, don't kill or murder anyone but modern militaries make atomic bombs and kill millions of innocents.
      No aghori will tell you to become one yourself. They would rather advise against it. Aghora is a very radical path and should never horrify Hindus. On the contrary, we should be proud of those who follow such severe and challenging pathways.

      @Language and Programming Channel cows especially since cows are the economic sustenance of Indian religious economy from Vedic. Times.

    The Tantric Sex thing isn't just a misunderstanding of Tantra, it's what con artists in the West use to make terrible products sound "mysterious" "esoteric" or otherwise different from the norm.
    It's not a "Top 50 Different Sex Positions to Try After Dark," it's a passionate form of worship expressed by billions across the globe.
    And if you ARE serious about exploring religious belief/divinity in your sex life, please treat it as such: take the love of your life, embrace each other, and while doing so, accept everything about their being in pure, unobsessed love. See it as one speck of paint across the beautiful canvas that is the cosmos and enjoy it all

    As an orthodox christian other religious beliefs that see the divine in the physical are heartwarming. For us the Divine is to be seated in the Nuos or intellect and the Nous is to be brought into the kardia or heart. We are body mind and soul called to partake in the divine nature and divine properties can be communicated to physical human nature. That is the point of the incarnation.
    But vamachara is scary. The Aghoris . . . no! I am interested in but ambivalent to hindu religion.

    Tantra = practical.
    Mantra is a theory derived. Fruitition of which lies in Tantra. When it is applied practically. It can be a yantra. Mechanism as to speak off.
    Don't speculate. Final stage is yantra. When it's fully applied. An apparatus which brings the theorum to practical use. 🤣

    Whats your take on Vishishtadvaita? I would disagree with details, but the overall picture if you abstract away those specifics seems to align with what i believe. I'm sincerely interested in the similarities and differences in hinduism, judaism, and catholic/orthodox christianity.
    Islam, protestantism and buddhism are beyond the pale to me.
    But in Vedanta the higher self is God or a part of God, In Orthodox Judaism the higher soul is a part of God, In Orthodox Christianity its not the soul but human nature itself and your nature as a person that are one of many logoi or divine ideas and a portion of God. Our disagreements are obvious but there is real common ground there that ought to be discussed and isn't ever discussed. We are all agreeing independently that there is a part of us humans that is inherently Divine.

      I have passing familiarity Shankara and Advaita and am aware of a couple dualistic sects as well. But I only know what I was taught and read during religious studies classes. I've dialogued with a couple srf members but they seem very westernized and against any sort of religious rites or ecstatic ritual which is just hard for me to understand.

      @theodore8178 5 років тому

      @Hᴜꜱᴛʟᴇ Lᴏʏ I don’t know if a youtube comment will work. It feels trite condensing it. But I will try to outline the key points:
      The Trinity There is one uncaused cause the Father alone and in that strict sense of the word he is the “one God” The one and only uncaused cause. The father eternally generates his Nous Logos or Consciousness and “breathes” His Spirit The Three are of one nature with him and divine with his divinity. That is the Trinity. It has been altered in western Christianity. The western claim is that the Father Son and Holy Spirit are identical to God’s essence (rather than just having God’s essence) But they aren’t Identical to each other. That creates contradictions that weren’t there in the though of the nicene fathers. Then they different doctrine of Trinitarian relations when it comes to God’s Spirit. Roman Catholics will say we worship the same Trinity. Many Orthodox will say no. I think think we do but we cant both be right on the details.
      God’s Consciousness takes on flesh and becomes man. This is Jesus. Jesus is one and the same as God’s Consciousness. He is consubstantial with us and with God.
      God (the divine consciousness of the Father) becomes man to overcome death by death and to make man God . we don’t become the uncaused cause. We become divine by participation in His divine Nature.
      orthodoxwiki.org/Theosis
      Already our inner essence is a portion of God like a thought within His Divine Intellect.
      jaysanalysis.com/2010/04/10/st-maximus-van-til-aquinas-logoslogoi/
      But for most of us this is not fully realized and we do not completely conform to the divine idea that is both the ground and end of our existence. The Saints we venerate because they have become a portion of God.
      The Roman Catholic church until 1054 was a part of the Orthodox Church. Protestantism is an abberant splinter from the RCC that I don’t get. Yet gained traction. The Nicene Creed was written and formalized by the Orthodox and Catholics together. The New Testament was written by us (RCC&EOC) and the bible canonized us.
      You may not have heard much about theosis before but everything I’ve said the RCC agrees with and is in their catechism. Protestants no longer teach it but the original reformers taught theosis too. Somehow the main focus for the Christians in the west has been on grace vs works and various interpretations of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. The cross is important to orthodox too, but there is no penal substitution or any notion “satisfaction” of God’s wrath. Somehow the both the RCC and Protestants lost the focus on union with God. Even though it is in most of their catechism most seem totally unaware and some protestants will even be scandalized by it.
      I think I have the basics of Advaita down. I had to study it in school. Correct me if I’m wrong here: the human person ceases to exist when they reach self realization? The Orthodox say the person becomes more real and remains intact when they achieve union with God or deification. So Christianity in its proper form seems fairly close to qualified nondualism but not so much advaita or hindu dualism. Protestant Christians though tend to be totally dualistic despite their origins. They usually don’t get what the bible says about the Father alone being the source of all (they will often apply this unique property of the Father to the whole Trinity). They Usually don’t get that the scriptures teach union with God. Read John 17 if you doubt me when I say this.

    • @theodore8178
      @theodore8178 5 років тому

      @Hᴜꜱᴛʟᴇ Lᴏʏ Yes, I know Advaita is not dualism and i know what it means. I mentioning both Advaita and Dvaita. I was simply calling Dvaita dualism. Sorry if that was not clear.

    • @theodore8178
      @theodore8178 5 років тому +1

      @Hᴜꜱᴛʟᴇ Lᴏʏ I do appreciate aspects of advaita. But I am Orthodox Christian.
      We teach a union of the body mind and soul with God. Deification of the body was what the orthodox vs gnostic dispute was about, Orthodox taught deification of the body and the body as a path towards further union with God. Gnostics claimed matter and the body are evil.
      Correct me if I'm wrong on this: Tantrism is about the body as a means towards union with God? This is taken down both benign and seriously depraved routes (the left hand)?
