- Epic early spring herping in western Maryland produced some awesome snakes, lizards, turtles! Highlights were Ratsnakes, Gartersnakes, Worm Snake, and Northern Red-bellied Cooters!

Nice! Weird to most ppl but rats are by far my favorite snake in MD lol so much sentimental value with them! Hoping to see some this weekend down at the tin!
I would say rats are definitely top 5 but number 1 for me has to be a hognose!
@@wiredwilderness4431 yeah for most ppl it seems to be coastal king or hog lol the king comes in right under black rat for me hogs and coastals i think are definitely the coolest to find tho

My older female pet Eastern garter is much larger and heavier than most wild garters I find. She is kept in a large terrarium with her buddies and is very active but she is still huge. They have several hide boxes but they always choose to congregate in the same 1. They really seem like they are buddies. Even with all that room they don't seem to like to be away from each other for too long.
Yeah, female eastern garter can be huge! Not often do I see large garters in the wild!
@@wiredwilderness4431 they grow huge in captivity because they actually get to live long enough for that to happen. They still have a shorter lifespan than a lot of commonly kept species living up to 12 years on average. Some live a bit longer. I had a previous female for 13 years that I found as a baby. I used to have a wild caught adult female Eastern milksnake that lived for 17 years with me but I've heard that they can live for 25 years if you get them as a baby.
Fantastic video as always! Lots of variety in this one. How do you catch so many lizards? I fail everytime I try to grab one lol.
Thank you! My trick is approach them very slow and don't make eye contact. So basically you walk toward them acting like you don't see them and most of the time they will just sit still. When you get close enough just quickly but gently pin them with your hand so they can't run. Takes a bit of practice but I probably catch 75% of lizards without them even running away.

Crispy coloration on the one I found. We have huge rats here in east Texas just haven't found one yet! I flip a great bit of ribbons here. Great video
