Imagine in Beethoven's time, audience used to listen to Haydn, Mozart and the first two symphonies of Beethoven, and they came across this grand symphony! It is the peak of western musical culture.

Yes yes yes this conductor and his players keep surprising me. I really feel that Beethoven himself would approve of how his music was interpreted. And the energy, which is by far the most important I believe. You can tell that these performers are not just playing for money or prestige, but are passionate; and that makes all the difference.

How refreshing to see a full-sized orchestra with 8 contrabasses playing this music ! None of that period instrument crap. You get the exposition repeat which you never see in a live performance, and the extra trumpet parts in the coda of the first movement. What more can you ask for? And of course the Vienna Philharmonic who can play this music conductor-less more or less.

I'm not a musical expert, but I loved this video. Most playings of this symphony are, in my opinion, rushed. This one was slower and not hurried . . . instead it was graceful and majestic. Plus, the video work was outstanding, IMO. Enjoy.

It is said that the Vienna Philharmonic was a men's club and no women played in it. It cannot happen today and I don't know when this custom changed. Still, the number of women playing in this concert is far from as many as men. Actually, I can only see one in the first violin section. But what a performance and what an orchestra!

nice to see rainer kuchl play concertmaster once again too. my favorite flute player wolfgang breinschmid plays the second flute here. i think he played first in other concerts - with the capella andrea barca notably, with sir andras schiff and other world class musicians from different european orchestras and some soloits too.
