    Please disregard any MORON that critiques your video making skills or "organization". They are folks who have never tried to make anything happen themselves and always wonder why more things aren't done for their benefit. You never professed to be a camera expert, you're simply trying to help. The rest of us really appreciate that you took the time to actually go through and demonstrate what Spektrum seems to be unwilling to do (or, in their multimillion dollar attempt, failed miserably). This was much more informative than any Spektrum/Horizon Hobby video I've ever seen and I fly large scale and jets exclusively but friends are constantly asking me how to do this. Since I don't use SAFE or AS3X, I never know how. Now I have somewhere to send them and I now feel like I could help them myself. Many thanks for taking the time and effort.

    Thank you for this. I had a crash in a Conscendo evolution (tip stall in final approach caused by sudden wind shift). After a small rebuild and what I thought was a fairly good check out before launch (yes - servo directions were all correct), it climbed immediately on launch, looped over (despite full down elevator) and crashed. Another re-build and check of all flight surfaces produced the exact same result but landed in a tree. It pretty well survived and i checked and still all surfaces appeared to work correctly but believing it was cursed I hung it up in the garage.
    Then a friend with the same model had a bad crash and when he reassembled it he inadvertently swapped the elevator and rudder servos. To get it to fly he had to reverse the direction of both servos. A very experienced pilot then offered to test fly it and it had the exact same crash profile as mine, climbing in ever increasing angles till it looped over and hit a tree. I had watched this carefully and realised it was though he had positive feedback on the elevator control loop and once climbing the error correction was reversed causing it to climb harder.
    Sure enough, this turned out to be the case when we checked the operation in SAFE mode. The fact that he had mechanically reversed the servos (and corrected it on the transmitter did nothing to help the gyro know that things had been reversed!
    Using this information I went and checked mine. I had not reversed the servos but still the gyro was controlling everything in reverse! I then reloaded the AR637 with the official flight software for the CONSCENDO but it still did not fix the problem. Finally I jailbroke the receiver and used your video guide above to dial in my own settings. It now flies flawlessly, though I am at a total loss to explain why this weird fault has appeared in my receiver.
    I found your instructions easier to follow than those on the official Spektrum site. Thank you

    • @Zek1701
      @Zek1701  2 роки тому +1

      Yes all the servos must be configured especially reversing before programming and the other is to ensure the plane is level when powering up plane when flying. Other than this with the basic programming it works well. Also I check that SAFE is working properly and the control surfaces are moving in the correct direction before flying.

    Ok, the results are in on my Graupner Partenavia upgrade ( from original 1990s technology: (7 cell nicad, Speed 400 brushed "can" motors, Futaba Attack-4 AM 72.550 MHZ transmitter , MCR 4A receiver speed control (with internal ESC))
    Maiden flight using Safe and AS3X was picture perfect...all thanks to your tutelage with your very complete and logical video. The total wing loading is approx 30% less than the original design! It floats and descends like a B-52.. that is, horizontal controlled sink. it takes off in 10 feet. The nose wheel is fixed but rotation happens so fast that no steering is necessary. 10 minute flights on 3200 mAh 3cell 30C. Vertical as well! loving it! Thanks!
    5/14/2023 update: I am all set to add flaperon function. Ailerons were not part of the Graupner kit so I added them way back in the late '90s. Can'wait to add flaperons.

      If you were not able to get the AS3X to work on the AR630 it might have been that the Heading was not set up. I'm not sure why it requires this setting but that's the only way I could get it to work. Thanks!

    Envelope is like training wheels on a bicycle. The gyro will keep your plane from banking, climbing, or diving too steeply, but it won’t self-level. You’ll have to level it yourself. It’s an intermediate mode that will keep your plane from getting upside down and teach you how to level it yourself.

    I've found out that you don't really have to set heading for AS3X to work. The reason AS3X doesn't work is because by default the gains are set to adjustable and if you don't set a gain channel the gains will be set to zero ! If you change the gains to fixed then it works.

      I would check that channel 7 is assigned to the switch you are toggling. Next, you should be able to see on the transmitter that when you toggle the channel 7 switch that the value change from 100,0,-100. That's how it works on a Spectrum transmitter.

      I don't believe the Spektrum AS3X/SAFE receiver provide directional control. AS3X only stabilizes in roll/pitch - not yaw. Likewise, SAFE only levels the aircraft(roll/pitch). I don't check nor believe I've seen the rubber move as a result of the receiver. If it does I don't use it. My planes are usually upside down and headed toward the ground...yaw is the least of my worries... 😄

      Low/High rates are independent from AS3X/SAFE. They are setup only on the transmitter and is not part of Fwd programming. In my case I have a DX9 and for a model I go into the D/R&Expo setting. Then I set the switch to F and I have 3 modes(High, Mid, Low). For High I set Dual Rate:100/100, Expo:0/0, Mid Dual Rate: 100/100, Expo: 40/40, Low Dual Rate: 70/70, Expo: 20/20. I do this for Aileron and Elevator. Typically I just fly with Mid rates. But - this is up to you as to what setup you like.

    I think the throttle to pitch would work great on a foam aircraft I have that the faster it goes it begins to climb and I always have to add down elevator. My theory is the wings are bow some at high speeds causing more lift. I would like to have some down elevator added as throttle is applied, it may help this aircraft fly better.

As I beginner I would takeoff at max speed then it was all I could do to get the plane to turn 180 degrees. By the time I finished the turn the plane was so I high I was starting to lose orientation. I am installing the AR630 in a 1/7 scale Globe Swift designed by Dennis Sumner. I intend to use SAFE mode for the maiden flight and likely subsequent flights. Do to the nature if the wing I fear it may snap roll. Your video is an excellent tutorial on how to program the AR630 but I have no experience with the setting you recommend for SAFE mode where you change Roll Right to 75%, Roll Left to 75%, Pitch Down 50%, Pitch Up 75%. Are these recommendations more for a jet? Or would they apply to a civilian aircraft like the Globe Swift or for that matter any RC model? Any insights would be appreciated.

    • @Zek1701
      @Zek1701  Рік тому

      No the roll rate would apply to any aircraft. Basically, it is how much of an arc the aircraft makes when turning. The normal set up takes a while to turn even when you have the stick all the way over. With these rates you can create more of a bank to turn quicker. These rates are just limits. SAFE will not let you roll or loop the aircraft. You can always put some expo in the roll if you are worried about a snap roll. Just be careful not to get too dependent on SAFE. SAFE also reduces your stick input by a percentage and when you switch to AS3X it get the full stick input. What I do it setup a switch where I can switch between SAFE and AS3X. When I first started flying I flew in SAFE but tried to ween myself off it. So when I flew in AS3X I knew if I got into trouble I could flip SAFE on and it would level the aircraft. Before flying make sure when you power on the receiver the aircraft is level. Happy flying!

    • @Zek1701
      @Zek1701  Рік тому

      Hi Pieter...I don't have a taildragger but I set it up fuselage level. For AS3X and SAFE the receiver is making corrections to make the aircraft level(pitch & roll) in flight. So when we set the receiver up initially AND when we power on the receiver prior to flight the aircraft should be level. In fact you might find if you don't level the aircraft when powering on the aircraft before flight the receiver may not initialize because it thinks the aircraft is not level.

There is the NX8 has a knob you can tie to the gain in fwd programming and adjust the gain in flight. I've never done this. You mentioned the AS3X is imperceptible. Have you tried turning off SAFE and AS3X see how it flies then turn on AS3X and see if there is a difference?

    Thank you for this video. I have installed a Spektrum 631 in a MotionRC DragonFly. I’m stuck because the aileron pushrods are on the top of the wing. In Safe, the aileron correction is correct. The elevator correction is backward. I can turn the receiver around and make the elevator respond correctly but then the ailerons go the wrong way. Can this be remedied in forward programming. • @Zek1701
      @Zek1701  Рік тому

      I'm going to assume that when the aileron/elevator are reversed it's when the receiver is flying the plane in SAFE mode. If you are flying the plane then you can do the reverse servo to get the aileron/elevator moving the right direction. So when the receiver is flying in SAFE I don't believe in Fwd programming you can do a "servo reverse" on the receiver. The only thing I can suggest is make sure you have the aileron/elevator going in the right directions when you are moving the sticks by doing servo reverse on the transmitter. THEN, do the fwd programming and setup SAFE. You should do the factory reset first. I believe the receiver learns the servo settings from transmitter when you start the fwd programming process. If this doesn't work I'd suggest contacting Spektrum/HH for suggestions.

I can assign the AUX1 channel to Gear and I changed the Gear channel to switch D which on a DX6 is a three position switch to accommodate the AR630 three modes but now the retracts are also activated. Just trying to set up Flight modes for my 4 channel Stinson Voyager ARF with AR631 receiver and Dx8 tranmitter. (1 no as3x or safe) (2 As3x ) and (3 Safe) on switch B
    Some things I found out: when you set the model "level" on a tail dragger, you must lift the tail to make the fuselage level, which is the orientation during normal flight. Also, Question: when you set up everything, I think you have to re-bind the receiver so all the settings etc are registered. Could you please confirm this or not? Thanks

    • @Zek1701
      @Zek1701  Рік тому +2

      No you do not have to rebind to register the settings. When you go through the Fwd programming it ask you to Apply and this registers the changes. AS3X will act like SAFE when testing because AS3X is trying to correct for roll and pitch , since your sticks are in neutral. If you turn on the receiver, select AS3X, rock the aircraft and you don't hear servos moving, then give 20% throttle, rock the aircraft and then hear the servos moving then AS3X is working. SAFE will work without giving the 20% throttle.

      @@Zek1701 Thanks for the reply but.... the reason I thought I programmed AS3X wrong , or, the AS3X was acting just like Safe . I found my answer. The difference between the control surface movements, and this might be added to your video, Step 1: manually hold plane upside down in Safe, the control surfaces will fully deflect to right the plane to level flight. Step 2 : without changing the orientation, flip the switch from Safe to AS3X. The control surfaces will pop to neutral. Step 3 Right the plane without touching the sticks. The ailerons will go to an un-commanded Right roll as the plane goes level. They will not pop to neutral until you flick the aileron stick.
      I think this is related to the RV-7 EFlite instructions caution but not specifically explained as to what is happening to my plane: "Return the elevator and aileron controls to neutral before switching from Safe Select mode to AS3X mode. If you do not neutralize controls when switching into AS3X mode, the control inputs used for Safe select will be excessive for AS3X mode and the aircraft will react immediately." I have also read in other manuals for EFlite to fly the plane in a level mode before switching between modes. I think the Gyros need an opportunity to neutral themselves.
      In summary the missing ingredient for me was that I thought AS3X was not programmed correctly because, unless you move the aileron stick the control surface in AS3X to neutralize the control surface, then AS3X acts initially like the Safe. . I hope I explained this accurately but try this out. In the video I did not see you wiggling the Aileron stick because it is off-screen. Try this and let me know if I am getting this or what I am missing.

If I think the plane needs more gain, I will increase all 3 by 10%. Generally, you can use 10% more gain on pitch than roll and 10% more on yaw than pitch. Switch B position 0 is low rates with AS3X, 1 is high rates with AS3X, and 2 is high rates with SAFE mode. I assign channel 8 (Aux3) to the bind switch for panic mode. They designed it so that when you create a new model, switch A is assigned to channel 5 (Gear) and switch D is assigned to channel 6 (Flaps). Most people fly Mode 2 which is aileron and elevator on the righthand stick. Your left hand is throttle and rudder, so it has less workload in the air. It’s usually available to flip switches while the right hand is busy flying. The A switch, being a 2-position switch is ideal for the landing gear. You can take your left index finger and easily find it to pull the gear up. The longer D switch is also easy to find. B and C are a little harder, but you will soon get use to using them for rates or gyro. Throttle cut needs a 2-position switch so I put it on switch H. Since I don’t use the other switches on the right side, I won’t accidentally kill my engine in flight. I like the way Spektrum’s engineers think. Yeah, I’m thinking about it, it will be extra cost and time, but I’d be safe than sorry I guess.

      The receiver needs to be powered on and binded to the transmitter before Fwd Programming shows up in the menu. The reason is you are actually programming the receiver not the transmitter.
