I was so floored by that I almost stopped the video at the beginning so I could stop being angry. Why would you let a 30-something year old man even be hanging out with your 15 year old, or date her, or MARRY her? Considering her severe injuries, she went silent and turned unresponsive very soon after making the call. Sounds like the father burying them in a Muslim cemetery was his final act of having control over their lives. The entire reason they were there needing to be buried was his actions like he was so proud of doing himself. He must have felt like this was a large smack in the face or a spit In their face of these two daughters he had who didn’t seem to want anything to do with their culture or faith. Had their parents been fully religious or even had regular dates to church or a temple like I did as a child myself, I’d understand some type of way. But the simple fact of how his parents or family before were religious and he didn’t seem to care about it was also a large part of his personality. To have spirituality, you have to be alright with the way things are even not going your way. You have to believe there’s a power greater then you out there, however we all know how much he was already affected by his brother being the golden child and getting the best treatment over the kids since he was the first born vs he was the third. He was the type of needed to be in control of everything. If he was left alone he’d likely be running his house like NK. Everyone thinking he’s a god who makes it rain and this and that. He wanted to have the family reliant on him but also he couldn’t fully support them on his measly taxi job or actually the mere fact he sucked at it they wouldn’t hire him and that’s when they got a store. He was again establishing control again with the girls seeing how he felt like they were his property and he has the right to do whatever he wanted. The mother just irks me so much too. I can understand to a degree the brother looking after the sisters protecting them but this is a thousand times worse. The dad was just trying to make sure the two girls who he didn’t view as his rank or equal, they are property and he felt he could do whatever. He’s even got his own son and wife to believe that too which is just beyond words, I’m stunned here.

While the mother was a POS, you have to remember that she was only 15 at the time of marriage and it's very easy to groom and brainwash a kid into believing something is healthy. That's also why people tend to not leave their abusive partner. They are usually broken down to a point that they believe they wont find anyone else better or be in a situation that is better. That is what happened here. But more to the point that she was brainwashed into his culture and beliefs.
So while she did have an understanding that her situation was terrible. The thought of not finding someone better or whatever her thought was overpowered common sense and reasonsing for her.

I like how you use past in your sentence but... child marriage is still legal in *a lot* of US states. As long as the parents are okay with it, grown men can marry little girls, even younger than 15.
So you end up with lots of cases of girls being groomed or even raped, and to "save face" or "for family's honour" they let the rapist marry their daughter when she ends up pregnant.
      It's disgusting.
If you're American, look it up, because lots of politicians still somehow manage to explain or excuse it, giving bs excuses like "Children are the parents' responsibilities, parents alone should make decisions about their children, not the law."
Even big "progressist" states still have laws allowing child brides.

*Edit: (PLEASE READ!!) A lot of y’all are getting WAY too offended by this in the comments. As some people have pointed out, using religion to justify brutally redruming your children is a _BULLSHIT_ excuse. Some-but not all-of y’all are completely disregarding the fact that two teenage girls are gone _forever._ This wasn’t just cus of perceived “dishonor”-Said believed he was losing _control._ It’s since been revealed that he was HIGHLY abusive-physically & s*xually-to both girls. Overall, sure, one could argue that this was partly due to the bullshit perception of dishonor, but for that creature, he was _NEVER_ gonna let go of that control, even until the very end. He is an evil, narcissistic, manipulative psychopath who ruled his family with a _TITANIUM_ fist and was unwilling to release his children from those metaphorical and psychological chains he bound them to through years of horrific abuse, never _EVER_ giving them a chance to just be…free.

So when i heard that the FBI tracked him down and captured him, i was relieved. Finally, this monster was going to be on trial for his crimes.

The worst part about this case was that, for whatever reason, the girls' own brother helped their father evade arrest for all these years. It's likely that Yaser had raised his son with the same values he himself had grown up with and the younger Said came to believe that his father was justified in his actions.

I find it both incredible and heartbreaking that these home videos exist. Seeing those two little girls grow up, seeing their smiles and their energy, seeing them just being normal American teenage girls fills me with both deep sadness and a sort of nostalgia too as they grew up in a time I was growing up too. I could imagine being friends with them, seeing them out in the world. But the reality is that I never knew them. And no one will ever be able to know them again thanks to the despicable acts of their father. He was nothing more than a tiny man with a fragile ego who couldn't stomach the idea of women's equality, let alone independence and freedom. He wanted to reap the rewards of an American life like his brothers, only he didn't have the innovation, determination, and smarts of his brothers which only further tortured his ego. Instead of trying to better himself and settle into the western world he picked the first woman he could find to marry (most likely for a visa) and subjugated her to his will and 'religion'. He saw his wife and daughters as nothing more than pawns to his own comfort and success, and when they couldn't provide him with comfort or money he killed them so that they could never escape his control. He never saw them as humans. He probably never even saw them as his offspring. They were expendable, tools to be used only by him. And the more they tried to assert their independence and freedom the more unstable and enraged he became. He's nothing but a tiny man barely fit to scrub toilets. May his name be forgotten.

I come from a family without religion and native to Sweden, and we lived in a situation extremely similar to this one. It is terrifying. Me, my two siblings and my mother got away from our father who was extremely unpredictable and dangerous. There was extreme amounts of gaslighting, violence and mental torture in our household for almost 18 years. He got 3 years in jail. My brother was basically a tool for my dad to live out his fantasies with, and he did his best to brainwash the poor kid to be like him when he didn't beat him to the ground. My brother is on his feet now, but the rest of us are seeing signs that he is starting to behave like his father as he grows older. My mother has mostly recovered and is now on her feet, my sister suffers from PTSD but has managed to start the reintroduction to society. Myself I'm worse of, with severe PTSD and still waiting for treatment.
But hey, at least we survived it. I remember hearing about this case, and my heart weeps for these two young women who never managed to get away. What hurts the most is how manipulated you get living in a situation like this... The mother's actions are horrible, but I understand. I've seen the same happen, and been the victim of the consequences. It is difficult doing something about your situation once things have gone that far.
Please be cautious about who you let close, and never make rash decisions like marrying in your youth. It might seem like the perfect idea at the time, but love blinds even the keenest of eyes.

The "mother" is guilty of their murders too, she betrayed them.

I've followed this case for years, so glad when he was finally caught! & thank you for covering this case Adrian. Those girls deserved far better parents than they were given, so sad 😞

Why move to a country whose culture clashes with your ideals? How does murdering your own daughters restore any type of honor and, if so, why go on run if what u did was so "honourable" to begin with?! He even pretended he didn't understand English during his trial.

"You've failed us." gave me such chills. As someone whose mom kept going back to an abusive guy, having a small glimmer of hope just for it to be dashed away when we had to rely on him was terrifying. I can't imagine the fear those girls went through. The mother is beyond guilty and encouraged the behavior, too. Two young girls who wanted to escape and kept being dragged back when they could've had such a beautiful life ahead of them.

This story literally makes me cry every time. The girls looks like they were so close to each other & it was probably bc all they had was each other. No one else ever looked out for them or protected them so they protected each other. 😢

The actual credit for him to get caught after all these years was due to some Egyptian public figures re-publicized the case and his crimes throughout all social media platforms, shedding the light on him and his family, and applying pressure. One of them was actually an Egyptian brave girl living in US.

We know honor killing are common there, but they wanted to preserve their reputation because he was an international fugitive.

This was pretty local to me, and it still makes me sick. Those girls tried so hard to find a way out and they had no one on their side: not their family, not their teachers, not even the cops after they had been shot. They were failed on so many levels it's hard to comprehend it.
