Regarding Mises' quote; So what does a citizen born in such a place do when he doesn't completely agree with culture he happens to born into? Or is that regarded as an impossibility, because the culture is so immensely "valuable above all" that no citizen could possibly disagree with it? So, if you don't completely disagree with it you are free to leave? Wouldn't that citizen be free to start his own party in order to try to adjust the points that he/she doesn't completely agree with? Or is any dissonance regarded as a good reason for leaving the country, since it is incomprehensible that one could possibly have any issues with the "valuable above all" culture?
Regarding the USA/"The West" today, this is what happens if small groups of people become too wealthy and powerful. (Like it or not, most people who become wealthy and powerful like the idea of being wealthy powerful, and it was the motivation to get there. Apart from that, "Power corrupts", human nature.) Once they reach a certain level of wealth and power, they will start to shape the society according to their preferences and if needed they will deceive the general population in ways that'll make it easier to reach their goal. Modern mass communication technology makes this a lot easier, especially since many the wealthy/powerful became that way by developing/using exactly those technologies. Once the next level of wealth and power is reached, they will no longer need to deceive and will enter a more totalitarian system. This is the stage that the US and the West in general are currently approaching. They will become much more like China, instead of China becoming more free. (The latter is one of the major deceits that were played on the western population in the past two decades.)
The advent of a powerful wealthy elite always happens, regardless of the system that they originate from. It human nature, it's rather sad but that's the way it is as one can easily learn from studying human history. Every system fails sooner or later, some systems fail faster that others. Absolute monarchies and other autocratic varieties, communism, fascism and other totalitarian systems, democracies, federal systems, it doesn't matter. (Of course life will be a completely different experience depending under which system one lives, but that's not the point here.)
As an individual one can only try to avoid the systems one wouldn't want to live in/under. This may mean leaving (nearly) everything dear to one behind. History also shows that those who leave a system that is going to fail/hurt them on time, will usually do better than those who leave later. It also teaches that one should carefully choose the new destination, and be one of the first to arrive there. Ones droves start to leave and arrive at certain destinations, entering there will usually become more difficult very quickly.

Amazon.com is an example of decentralized retail? Looks like the opposite to practically everyone else. The company has local warehouses, so that makes it "decentralized"? Like Sears never had local stores of products? Like every Walmart is not a local distribution warehouse? Like the Soviet Union never had local commissars? Every conceivable system of central authority is "decentralized" in this sense.
The "local control" advocated here hands all power to a capitalist class with hereditary title in perpetuity, not to local communities regulating themselves as local residents prefer regardless of a more central authority. Because the capitalists can be trusted not to seek ever greater rents?
I completely agree that we need local autonomy, complete sovereignty at a level practically realizing the principle of rule by consensus or free association, sovereignty at the county level subject only to an inalienable right to exit say, but this devolution of power does not preserve Amazon.com's property in local warehouses or even its contracts across county lines much less its software patents, trademarks, and other global impositions, not even its domain names.
When I hear Deist concede that local communities need not respect these impositions as they take rulemaking authority from D.C. and state capitals, I'll take his call for liberating the imposed from the imposers seriously. What I expect instead is narrative weaving in defense of his preferred state and its ruling class, like "no, that's theft". If my countians don't respect your impositions, we are stealing power from you.
Paypal hasn't decentralized payments either. The idea is ridiculous on its face. Ask Ryan Dawson how decentralized it is.
What will Trump do? He'll greenlight even bigger "stimulus" checks because he says he will. He'll impose even more trade restrictions on China, Iran, and other economies because he says he will. He'll impose even more sanctions on U.S. allies to enforce even more punitive sanctions on Iran because he says he will. The only thing we should doubt is his promise to withdraw troops from Afghanistan and Iraq and Syria because he's said the same for four years, while his puppetmasters say the opposite, and the puppetmasters have always prevailed. What will Trump do? You'll get a pretty good idea by asking Biden what he'll do rather than parroting "he's a socialist" talking points.

Out where I live young healthy people with virtually zero risk of death from covid have developed OCD, fear human beings and are waiting to die. In Georgia at this presentation, people are huddled together without face diapers... I'm so jealous.
I would seriously consider moving soon if our do-nothing governor and public "health" department don't start using critical thinking and looking at the data to assess the pros and cons of these non-science based lockdown restrictions.

Jesus said that we always have the poor among us. We need to understand and accept that fact. Those in power now only desire to keep their power. Those who want to takeover the power want the power and to make everyone else part of the poor. That isn’t what Jesus said.

  • @konberner170

Great talk! I only disagreed with the statement that we got Rothbard because people didn't listen to Mises on liberalism. Instead, Rothbard was one scholar who, rather than carrying the Mises' torch of for liberalism, decided to try to sell everyone on Mad Max's world being better than one based on liberalism--or at least that is the common image of anarchism that would register to the typical person. So it was word games about what anarchism does and doesn't mean , rather than talking about keeping the state small enough to continue to nourish liberalism.
But then dropping the ball on such things is normal in human history. How else could Spanish inquisitors tell us that torture was a necessary part of Christ's message? Endless examples can be found of clear messages being twisted before they had any real time to spread.

A blue state exit strategy seems clear to me. The major cities in the West Coast and the North East take their states out, which leaves the remainder of the USA much more solidly Republican. Maybe there is some counter secessions of rural areas back to the rump USA. But I don't see what a red state exit strategy looks like.

    • @dcsco
      @dcsco 4 роки тому +1

There does not really need to be a formal exit strategy on either side.
The federal government was created by the States, and it only had the authority to coin money, declare wars, and foreign policy. Everything else was controlled by the States, which existed before the federal government.
All States need to do is assert their rightful authority, and ignore the federal government by refusing to accept their bribe money in exchange for their control.
Basically, just force the federal government back into the box it was originally in.
Its overreach and over bloating also needs to be reduced by downsizing it to where it was originally, and still should be.
BTW, the red states will ignore the federal government if Biden is elected, just as the blue states will ignore it if Trump is reelected, so that will work both ways.

I can only attest to this with personal anecdote, but i know several staunch socialists in who, after spending their 20s indoctrinating themselves in places like NYC and SFO, return to their homes in the midwest after the tax and regulatory burden becomes too high for their middle class professions, and ironically start vociferously advocating for the same statist policies that made their previous lives on the coastal megalopolises unsustainable. Anecdotally, it seems the only people who stay out there either work under the table, live in tiny studios in far flung ghettos (their role in gentrification tearing at their social justice hearts) or make oodles of money in fintech. Long story short, if 10% of the stateists leave NYC, SFO Seattle, etc, and return to their small towns, those big cities will still be stateist, and now the smaller ones will have to fight off the SJW influences of the newcomers.
