Snakey Chantey is one of my favorite game songs and one I sing to even if I'd only ever gotten around to thinking of words towards the end of the buildup.
I concur! Snakey Shanty's a great piece not only for DKC(2), but across ALL of the series under the wider Mario banner Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Wario, etc.)
I think what’s interesting is that DKC3 focused a lot more on the animal buddies abilities to make some really interesting level gimmicks, it’s honestly why I think Rambi didn’t make the cut, I mean he’s the only animal buddy to have an entire level focusing on him (only short bits) at least Engaurde despite being a water Rambi, has the unique ability to actually attack and freely swim in water something the kongs lack, ironically when he was the only one to return in returns and TF I think they made the best levels with the rhino especially in tropical freeze (All 3 of his levels are absolute bangers) while the levels hypothetically could be beaten by the Kong’s solo, but they definitely feel more designed for Rambi’s speed and absolute power, I really wish they next time we get a new DK game with the animal buddies they take the tropical freeze approach to their levels.
Another interesting thing is that Snakey Chantey, the theme that plays in Rattle Battle, is a triumphant remix of Klomp's Romp, the music theme for the pirate ship levels. Klomp's Romp is a calmer theme that indicates the beginning of your adventure, and that you're entering enemy turf; K. Rool's turf, that is. Snakey Chantey, however, puts a spin to it: this is Rattley's turf now, and he's with the Kongs!
Now I'm going to be thinking about the metaphysical mechanics and implications of what happens to the Kongs while you're controlling a critter all night.
Every song that is only used once in DKC2 is a highlight to someone's character: "Run, Rambi, Run!" Cements king zing as a major threat able to put fear in the toughest anibud, and his bloodthirst for what happened to Queen B, Snake Chantey is rattly's riot, K. Rook Duel is the vengeance of the irate pirate. Screech Sprint shows the competitiveness of screech with his major version, squawks, and the fake DK rescue song gives tension to how close the ending is. David Wise ABSOLUTE GENIUS
I’ve always loved Rattly, and Rattle Battle has always been my favorite level (only rivaled by Target Terror and Rickety Race, all in no small part due to the music). It’s just so _fun_ to just bounce around, especially leaping over and stomping all the Kaboings, pulling off those midair jumps (which also serve as nice early practice for Gusty Glade), and even when you die it’s impossible to be mad at such jazzy music. I think another reason giving a horizontal level to a vertically-oriented character is because you see everything you need to worry about right in front of you; Toxic Tower is super stressful not just because of the rising acid(?), but because you have to be really careful with your vertical jumps and, thanks to the aforementioned acid, your do-over chances aren’t exactly plentiful. Rattle Battle is the opposite: Rattly’s super jump can always make up for a mistake that leaves you having to cover ground again. Goofy snake is very good 🐍 Side note: _DKC2_ was my first _Donkey Kong_ game; for a while it was the only one my family had. When I finally got around to the first _DKC,_ I found Winky *_way_* more slippery and uncontrollable than Rattly ever was. I honestly have no idea how anyone could be upset with Rattly replacing the frog, the snek is just better in every way.
Coming back to this video cos the trope of a character that betrays their kind to join the good side and lead a much happier life is soooo near and dear to me, Klomp Romp vs Snakey Chantey is such a beautiful showcase of the trope!
I like Rattly. He's like Diddy -- Newcomers will assume he's not as good as his buddy, but the pros love him after they get a feel for how to use him properly!
To be fair, Rambi is the first playable Rhino that genuinely feels unstoppable. He's allowed to be basic if he's beefy and satisfying and doesn't outstay his welcome. Rambi is the perfect hamburger.
I'm surprised, Rattly isn't popular. That level and thatone in the castle were allways awesome to play and I genuenly don't miss Winky too much. I mean, why don't people hate Dixie because she replaced DK? I don't think Rattly should receve any hate because of that when being such an awesome character.
Designing For DKD has inspired me to do a playthrough of DKC2, having never gotten past the 2nd world before. I saw the title of this vid and decided not to watch until I knew what the title was hinting at, and the title's inspiration alone made that level just as thrilling and fulfilling of the game's immersion as you described.
0:48 ironically squawks is the one where transformation doesn’t matter and the levels actually become harder since you can’t stand on brambles as only squawks lol
This used to be the most frustrating level of world 3 to me. The level I loved and hated the most. The last time you have to jump high and across on the Kannon's barrels, it used to take me so many tries and deaths before I found a working foothold.
With this level, I think it being easy is fine because it's what you might call a "breather episode". Sometimes you need to have an easier level to help release some of the tension, and that's what they're sort of going for here.
Gotta love Rattly taking out Squitter's arch nemesis: The Kaboings! Green Kaboings are also Rattly's archenemy as they jump very high! And also, I guess you can say Bopopolis is kind of the DKC TF equivalent of this level, albeit MUCH harder. Rattle Battle does it better because it's way easier. But like Bopopolis does the same thing with a lot of jumping on enemies, a power trip of a level, and having a similar flow. And was funny that you put a defeated Kannon and a defeated Kaboing on the two sides of the screen as a background for it! XD.
There's a sense of narrative in all this. Basically, DK went to beat King K. Rool on the ship and managed to do so. Then, several months later, the ship appeared again on the horizon. . Since Diddy started to date Dixie, DK decided to go and beat King K. Rool by himself, but he didn't return. Then Diddy, together with Dixie, went to see what happened to him. . When they arrive at the Captain's Cabin, they saw King K. Rool note, now taking the alias of Captain K. Rool, saying he subjulgated DK and took him to his fortress at the Kremling's island. . Then Diddy and Dixie decided to go to the fortress and save DK, but first they had to beat Krow, his first immediate. . They beat, but then the ship crashes in the rocks. Diddy and Dixie, flee from it, but they didn't realize they got caught by the tide and fell on the volcanic area. . When they need to go around the ship's again, they passes by the same areas they found earlier, but everything is caught by the swamp. The Kremlings are still there, but they don't follow anyone's orders, so they still keep around. . When Diddy and Dixie leave, they face a bunch of natural dangers of the island, until they reach to a point of the supernatural area of the island - there, they find Immediate Krow again, but he's now a ghost called "Kreepy Krow". They beat the spirit and finally are able to face Captain K. Rool. . They reach there and learn he isn't on the fort anymore, but on his helicopter. DK leaves in search of Captain K. Rool again, but he couldn't find him anywhere. Diddy and Dixie then try to find their own way to find K. Rool and remember the tough guy who sells the Golden Barrel on some places. They went there and discover a passageway for inside the island. Diddy and Dixie face the dangers from it until they find K. Rool there. . In a last desperate way to eliminate the kongs, he decides to use the mysterious power of the island, but he fucks it somehow and the power destroys the island, which sinks in the ocean. Diddy and Dixie together with Donkey Kong observe it from afar and it marks the end of Captain K. Rool's story. . Later, people realized that K. Rool got mad and started to make experiments to regain the control of his army, He tries to bring back Zingers, who were extinct, and finding the source of the mysterious power from the northern continent with the Banana Birds. He managed to have a short-lived success with it, but all his empire ends when the Banana Bird Mother ends his plans forever.
I absolutely HATED Winky. Winky was remarkably unwieldy and bounces forward everytime he walks, and sometimes, this can cause you to slip off of platforms, and when you combine this with a wonky hitbox, it becomes frustration incarnate when you have to use him. Rattly, at least, has a more stablized bounce when he moves forward, and, unlike Winky, is capable of performing a jump in mid-air when he walks off of a platform, which makes him LEAGUES better than Winky (that and the super-jump, so much fun.) Seriously, I can understand why Rare and Nintendo refused to bring back Winky. Fuck Winky, he was an absolutely GARBAGE tier Animal Friend.
I really like Rattly. It's strange that both Rattly and Winky were dropped for the next game. I think Winky is the only animal buddy that only features in 1 game, not appearing in Donkey Kong Land.
To anyone who loves the song to this stage as much as I do. I highly recommend to look up the "cover" by Tom Brier. He's a ragtime pianist and sight read the piece effortlessly.
I'm still ticked every animal buddy in the game got 1-1.5 levels of their own except Rambi who only got like 1/3 of a level even when it was NAMED AFTER HIM.
To be fair, I always thought transformation barrels were a little redundant even when I was a kid. What was the point, when the game already had regular Animal Buddies? Also, there’s no way Rattly is the least popular Buddy. That has to be Squawks.
I come back to this video a lot, but I need to say this. In what world could Winky ever be considered a “beloved mainstay”? I love Winky, but not only is he only in one game, but he’s so awkward to play as, that even the developers don’t like him.
I guess you could call this snake level a pretty solid one
Eeeeyyyy!!!!
Clever.

This is the comment of the year
You're pretty good
A level that predicts Animal Antics, the best level in the trilogy.
Maybe Juno Songs makes a lyric Version someday. He did a splendid job with Gangplank Galleon
I think what’s interesting is that DKC3 focused a lot more on the animal buddies abilities to make some really interesting level gimmicks, it’s honestly why I think Rambi didn’t make the cut, I mean he’s the only animal buddy to have an entire level focusing on him (only short bits) at least Engaurde despite being a water Rambi, has the unique ability to actually attack and freely swim in water something the kongs lack, ironically when he was the only one to return in returns and TF I think they made the best levels with the rhino especially in tropical freeze (All 3 of his levels are absolute bangers) while the levels hypothetically could be beaten by the Kong’s solo, but they definitely feel more designed for Rambi’s speed and absolute power, I really wish they next time we get a new DK game with the animal buddies they take the tropical freeze approach to their levels.
that level were the elephant runs is constantly running was really fun

Finally, somebody recognises Rattly and Rattle Battle’s underrated yet fun gameplay!
Rattle Battle's level music was so good they made it the Nintendo Land hub theme.
I love the lore and psychology behind these levels.
It makes Rattly more endearing.
Even as someone who hasn't played many Donkey Kong games, I am LOVING DK December.
Also just noticed at 5:24 one of the Kremlings Ka-Boings himself straight to Heaven.
its just entities despawning after leaving the screen.
@@ovaiggy Naw I'm pretty sure he ascended.
Now I'm going to be thinking about the metaphysical mechanics and implications of what happens to the Kongs while you're controlling a critter all night.

"And he replaced beloved Donkey Kong Country mainstay Winky the Frog, a crime some will never forgive him for."
THERE I AM GARY THERE I AM

I never missed Winky... Rattly for me is much better!! But I think no one hates Dixie cause of her abillity, hehe
You can’t hate near perfection

You sir earned a new sub! DKC Is tied with Metroid as my favorite series, and you seem to really get what's so good about DKC.
This used to be the most frustrating level of world 3 to me. The level I loved and hated the most. The last time you have to jump high and across on the Kannon's barrels, it used to take me so many tries and deaths before I found a working foothold.

This brings me back, love the content bro
I found your videos a few days ago and have been binging ever since while I work. Thank you!
He once was the Kattle, but now he can Rattle!
Gotta love Rattly taking out Squitter's arch nemesis: The Kaboings! Green Kaboings are also Rattly's archenemy as they jump very high!

Listen, I don't like that he replaced Winky but I respect his hustle
I want to point out that Rattly is better than Winky in the SNES versions. Super jump notwithstanding, Rattly can jump out of a drop and Winky can't.
2:46 this is one reason why the GBA version is better, because it doesn't have that blinding light. Also, Rattly is easier to control
the music did it for me
Rattley got indirectly his own theme, and that's quite something
rattly i remember took me a while to figure out how his charged jump worked and was required in toxic tower. he still feels like an upgrade to winky.
May not be the best animal buddy, but he the only one with his own track & it fckin slaps
Ratley ain't just cold blooded.
He's COOL blooded. 😎
YESSSSSSS love love this level sooooo much! always overjoyed to get to it
DID SOMEONE SAY RATTLY GOOD???
HOLY SHIT, I LOVE THE GOOFY BOUNCY SNAKE, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS RATTLY!!!!

What is that thing in the beginning where he combines diddy and squawks

i never heard anyone say winky the frog was "beloved"
That was my fave stage in the game, specially because of the music
I really like Rattly. It's strange that both Rattly and Winky were dropped for the next game.
I think Winky is the only animal buddy that only features in 1 game, not appearing in Donkey Kong Land.
Man this level gave me my first game over though.
Glitch or not Rattly has some pretty fun mechanics. For example you can do a double jump or use Dixies float on Rattly.
weird ive always liked rattly, this level was one of those i would replay a bunch of times
Now thats good alliteration
Funnny he has always been my favorite animal buddy. 😅😅😅

I guess you could say that rattly is cool blooded
I feel empowered
I love Rattly, personally.
Great level but i like web woods more. Thanks for the content!
whats the website at 0:13
i wonder if he'll cover anything from the jungle climber games
wait wouldn’t yoshi beat the buddies cause he stared in his own game rather than some levels
Rattly >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> winky
I agree.
0:28. Well Yoshi at least got his own games. So I wouldn't say they far surpassed him just because they have levels lol
Snek
I hate this level, I’ll take ramby any day #justiceforwinky
I don't like this game that's it I will smash it
Skill Issue
I just don't like the snake
