When you were explaining how you were thinking of giving away your old food processor and just explaining how it’s broken but still works reminded me of a series I watched where there was this elderly couple that were selling their house and the husband just loved stuff, he found a reason to keep everything. Well, they had this old crockpot that had a finicky knob that would turn on itself which he mentioned when he decided to give it to a young couple with kids and they were so appreciative of the gesture. Well, the old crockpot turned itself on overnight and caused a roaring fire while the family was sleeping. They made it out but there was nothing left of the house. The father shortly died from complications caused by the fire.
So, reminder to all of us, once it’s no longer safe, it’s time to throw it away. It might just save lives.

This is so true. I've been taking this to heart as we go through our basement. We put stuff down there that "sort of" still works. It's...where appliances go to die. Who wants our broken stuff?! I think that the same mentality of "don't be someone elses dumping ground" can be reversed as we simplify. "Don't make someone else your dumping ground." I don't want to put that burdon of deciding to keep/not keep just because I don't want to throw it away.

I empathize with your struggle with throwing away the old food processor. I have found that in these situations (when things *technically* work) asking myself "Would I give this to one of my kids?" is really helpful. If it's not safe/usable enough for them, then it belongs in the garbage.

That's good! If we wouldn't give it to someone for "free", then someone won't buy it at a thrift store.

I love you for sharing the agonizing thought process that can go along with disposing of something that feels like it *might* still be useful ❤ Sounds to me like you got plenty of use out of the old food processor, and it doesn't owe you anything.

Yes! This is for anyone who needs to hear this message (and Dana) - You have permission to throw things away and NOT feel guilty about it!
If it facilitates getting things out of the house, if it's better for your mental health, if it's just easier than figuring out how it can still be used or by whom - Just. Throw. It. Away. Creating / maintaining peace in your home is more important than the potential benefits of getting rid of something "the right way."
This is something I used to really struggle with until I read Cas's book The Clutter Connection. I still struggle with whether something is (or "could be") useful, but generally once I've decided it's not staying, I have little problem tossing it in the trash to make it leave. Just like your decluttering muscles, it gets easier the more you practice it.
One day, when my house is in order, Future Me may have the energy to list things on marketplace or whatever, but that's one less thing Present Me has on my plate right now.

Thanks for sharing about the thought process. I took some stuff to donate at our community center and the joy on the person's face that wanted it made me feel so good! I want to scour my house for more to give. I'm not going to miss it and I want to put a smile on more people's faces.😊 Please try to donate what is useful instead of trashing it. I can see you might not want to deal with Facebook but it's not that hard to drop off at thrift store for most people. Sadly, you are unlikely to get as much use from the new one, but the advantage is the smaller footprint and lighter weight. Wonder if it is available in prettier color? I love the fact that my new air fryer is pale pink. But old can be small, too. My retro 'Half-pint' microwave is smaller than new ones, yet fits large dinner plates. 😊

This is soooo true!! Hard to throw out the old, broken, dangerous ect!! When we cleaned out in-laws home after they passed. Pop had old treadless tires, broken car batteries, home batteries, broken bikes ect.. Mom had a drawer stuffed with twist ties( couldn’t even open the drawer)!! Rubber bands from daily newspapers (60 yrs.) on basement door that made it impossible to open the door (so it was always open)!!! 60 years of junk!!! I don’t want to be THAT person!!

I would have gone through the same process. Only people who think the way we do understand how hard that was. If I put it in the garbage under the sink I would dig it out in a few hours. I have to bag up things to throw away. Tie the bag shut tight and put it in the outside trash can where I can't see it and it is harder to retrieve. Celebrate you!!! 🎆🎆💃

We actually did away with gifts for Christmas a couple of years ago. My family was always an over the top gifting family so this was a BIG move. We decided our gift would be to go on a cruise in the spring, and we did. Oh my, what a RELIEF it was not to have to figure out what to buy and spend money, just to bring in stuff that half the time didn’t get used, and didn’t fit under our clutter threshold. Now we don’t miss it all. We decorate and spend time together and eat tasty food. So we are at least not bringing in more stuff to clog our home’s arteries!

I finally threw away a light blanket that was too torn even for an animal shelter. My sister gifted me a new one for Christmas. Also I gave up the idea of repairing a composter and put it on the curb with the blanket on garbage day. Also gone, a plastic mat that I replaced with a different brand. I was tired of all the plastic pieces that broke when I scraped my shoes. I'm proud bc I didn't just put it somewhere else like the shed... 🎉 Thanks for the reminder And well done Dana

I found your channel a week ago and lady, you have changed my life!
I live on a narrowboat in England, very small space, *loads* of "essential" stuff! I didn't have room in my cupboards for everything I had, so the boat was always a mess and it's very correct that mess attracts mess! I would look at it and think, right! I'm gonna take a couple of days off work and clean this place, but then... where do I start? I want to put this away, but I can't get to that cupboard until I move that, and... where do I move that to? And forget ever being able to properly clean any area! So... I'd sit n watch UA-cam videos... not really about cleaning, just, y'know... "watch a bit of TV to get me in the mood to start - and then I'm definitely gonna do this!!!" (Of course I never did!)
So there I was, sitting in the only space on my sofa that didn't have stuff piled up "just until I straighten this out" (yeah right!) And there you were!
Decluttering? I think I scoffed actually, but, "start with obvious trash"... I thought, "Well, yeah, I can do that bit!" Then... where would I look for this item - well I knew where I'd look if my boat was straight! But it was "if I needed this, would I remember I already had it?" Blew my mind! Suddenly I had a bin bag full of stuff, and a clear sofa! By the end of the day my living room was completely clear, and I was heading to the next area to start! I have now got rid of *so much* stuff! Why do I need 5 bed sets when I only have 1 bed? Why do I have enough plates and pans to feed a small army, when there's only me here, and even if you had friends around only 4 people can comfortably fit in! I was asking myself "why do I need to keep this string of bells?" And on more than one occasion came the question, "what even is this item?" If I don't know what it is, I definitely don't need it taking up space! Right!?
So thank you! You helped me to tackle an impossible task, and win!

Thank you Dana! I think this is the thing I struggle with the most when it comes to decluttering! I want to let you know, in case this happens, if you lose the little plastic dololly -pusher thing, Kitchenaid will send you a new one! The very first time I washed mine in the dishwasher, it blew off the the top rack and landed smack on the heating elements and melted ( talk about your toxic smells)! Since it happened so soon after purchasing it, they sent it for free, but I believe they said it was normally around $5, which would have been well worth it.

Thank you for this. It is really difficult to hear people telling you how, when, and where to dispose of every single thing that we declutter. I call it donation bullying. It’s ok to just trash it. I almost wish all the declutter channels would just stop talking about what they do with the stuff because it is really none of our business. They may donate, give away, or trash…whatever they need to do without judgement.

I know how hard that was to do. When we replaced our old drip coffee maker that wasn't working with a percolator, my husband said, 'Why do we keep the carafe...just in case.' I was so tempted. But since we had a completely different coffee maker, it was removed and put into the trash. So hard to do. But necessary.

Hi Dana … my mother had 3 or 4 old kettles and 3 old toasters…. There were valuable pieces on all of them! So they never got thrown and mum might have needed them someday …. Maybe the new one would break! When eventually the new one did break … she would get another new one! The good side of my mum was she was the recycling queen … such a good skill to have … and the bad side … well that’s obvious!! I have my mums voice in my head telling me to conserve and not waste. It creates yet another barrier to decluttering.
The moral of this story is to search for other voices and opinions that free you and allow you to make decisions in your own best interest. Thank you Dana for being one of those voices for me ❤❤ 🎉

hahaha, "or on purpose, whatever." I love you, Dana. I love my chopper. We're in a camper and I'll probably upgrade when I buy a house. I freeze my chopped vegetables. I inherited my grandparent's storage unit a few years ago. I found that when given the choice, I kept their stuff and got rid of my own. I love old stuff and it seems to be made better. I took an old percolator from the 70s to college with me in the early 2000s. I used it for years and it still worked when I threw it away. We moved and I didn't realize that I had left coffee in it when I packed it to go into short term storage. It was a mess and I just couldn't deal with cleaning it at the time. It was all intact and would probably still work beautifully. I've gotten rid of so much stuff (2/3s actually) and I'm working on not feeling guilty for having a slow spell right now. Congratulations on your new gadget and out with the broken.

This idea has recently taken hold of me and i love it. Almost six yrs ago i moved from Ga to Tn. Moved with a pickup truck loaded down. I wasnt sure if i would stay in Tn permanently so i clung to my Ga stuff.
As i've grown into my new life i enjoy new things and each Ga item just feels like old baggage that muddys my new life with memories & feelings that just dont 'fit' who i'm becoming. So i'm slowly donating most of those Ga items, and if needed, replaced with new Tn stuff. Theres a handful of things i'll never get rid of but the majority of Ga stuff is either gone or will be soon. Makes decluttering SO MUCH easier.
It's like giving my inventory a refreshing bath. 😂

This made me giggle so much, way back we had our kitchen redone, and i treated myself to a new stand mixer, however because 'technically' my food processor that had done great service for yay many years, still worked, i put it in the loft. Well one day a few years later i had to go up into the loft and take it to the small electricals dump . If only i had done it straight away. What goes on in our heads that we know the thing is quirky and damaged, hence we replaced it, yet we don't throw it out. I honestly thought no one else diď this. Thank you for sharing.

Today was the day I opened my new food processor! That I asked for! Because mine broke! Pat myself on the back I threw mine out this summer when it broke but lol hubby talked me into keeping the blades for some reason, but when he gave me the new one I said now I can get rid of the blades of blades- no arguments.😂

Very helpful to share the struggle of actually putting it in the trash! That was hard to do, but logic prevailed! A kind of a moral support dose of courage.
See, I may have been the person searching online for replacement parts to fix the old one... which may not have been available or affordable... for a 25-year-old appliance than was likely on the verge of wearing out. (But it was BLUE!!) Good video.

I would think "can buy the missing replacement part." I tend to make things harder than they need to be on that front. Caring for every little item set to go out the door is where things bottleneck. Building letting go muscles.

I don't know if the US has this but here in Canada, our recycling places can take appliances like this so it doesn't end up in the landfill. The downside is that it gets shipped overseas where people will strip it for the metal. The other downside is that the final waste sits in a landfill on the other side of the planet.

Glad you mentioned this. People don’t often think through the whole process of how fossil fuels are wasted on such a process. You reminded me of a video I watched about how much US clothing waste ends up in Asia (I think it was) just strewn across beaches. So sad.

@@brendatomlinson oh I might have seen that one too. It really made me think about my clothing choices and from there I created a personal "uniform" where I have 7 changes of clothes all of the same style but different colours. This way I stop falling into the "I have nothing to wear" trap when I'm getting ready for work. I now so rarely purchase clothes an it's never from the fast fashion markets.

I get you! In the past, I would have kept the old one "just in case" the new one breaks one day. It is something I still default to and have to catch and correct myself every time. If I didn't start doing that, I would still have tons and tons of stuff just sitting there unused.

If you have an electric/hazardous waste recycling center, it is better if you take the motor part there and toss the plastic container and blade parts. You could also list the blade parts on a free site and it no one takes it within a few days then toss it. I know it is extra work but it does help the environment.

I really hate to tell you this, but you could have ordered a new bowl for your old food processor. I received a Robot Coupe as a wedding gift in 1985 and after about 30 years, the plastic had become so brittle the bowl locking mechanism was chipping apart. (Hint: Don't put your bowl in the dishwasher. The water is too hot.) Anyway, enjoy your new gift! ~ Lisa

I have the same food processors - BOTH of them! I loved the old one but the spacer that holds up the shredding/slicing disks disappeared so I bought the new one. The old one is bigger and worked better for me, so I kept it for chopping. We tried to order a replacement spacer, but they're not available anymore. A year later, my husband found the spacer in our garden compost! I cleaned it thoroughly then gave the new processor to our son.

My food processor bowl is cracked and when she decided to let hers go, I was going to use hers to replace mine. Then I discovered hers was beyond a "small crack!" Out hers went. But I did donate blades, carefully packed into holder my dad made for each of us.

Yes! I love this so much! It's hard for me, too!
Recently melted the bottom of my perfectly good insta-pot while in the middle of an impromptu cooking session. None of the wires seemed damaged, but the plastic grade covering it was gone. Fortunate for me, I had a garbage bag right beside me. I was able to throw it all out quickly before I ''found'' uses for the other parts! I could feel my self thinking : oh but... NO! Out it goes!
I bought it less than 5 years ago on marketplace and looked for a replacement to see that I had an 8 quarts and only 6 quarts were available. I live alone, mind you, and I can live with the smaller version! IT'S GOING TO BE FINE!
Oh, my, how did this video hit home! The struggle is real, Thank you!
