Yep!! Everything fits in my closet!! I also keep only so many hangers. When something new comes in, something has to go or I don't have enough hangers! It's not my fault I can't keep everything , it's the hangers fault! 😆

For me ( I live in Canada), the changeover is an event. But I look forward to it! I have thought about keeping everything out all year now that I have so much more space in the closets (thanks to your clever tips) but I would miss the joy of pulling out the beloved fuzzy sweaters and snow boots, and the pride of hanging the pretty sundresses and cute flip flops... For me unboxing the best of the seasons and the anticipation for the new weather is joyful. Thanks in no small part to only keeping clothes that I love and are looking forward to wearing again!

I live in Wisconsin so it is very necessary for me to have seasonal changeovers, what I do is have one long bin that fits under my bed. and in winter weather I put long sleeve shirts and pants in dresser and swap out the tee-shirts and shorts into the bin. sweaters always stay in a organizer in my closet. and it works very well for me and takes maybe 5 minutes to do.

Hey Neighbor! 👋 I'm from Wisconsin, we moved to Alaska the beginning of this year. I don't have to swap everything out seasonally, where we are from there isn't a ton of shorts weather, but Temps change by the hour like Dana said! I have with Dana and Dawn's help downsized to where I have enough room for all of my clothes to be in the dresser at once and the drawers close!!

I kind of do both - I've decluttered down enough that all seasons fit in my closet, but I switch them out seasonally anyway. This results in a very limited "capsule wardrobe" effect in my closet, which makes getting dressed in the morning super easy because everything is an option. Because I've pared down my clothes so much, the switch is super fast and painless, and it also forces me to touch every item of clothing twice a year which helps me declutter whatever is no longer serving me

Same, I don't have anything to switch over, cause tank tops are the bottom layer during the winter, and cotton shorts are still needed cause it gets warm in the house.
If we stay at a hotel, we'll still want to try to swim, if they have an indoor pool.
I do switch out gloves, winter hats with sunglasses and ball caps, for the kids, but it's mostly to make sure we have the right size & extra for if some get lost, and their always in the same place, close to back packs in our project room, and they don't have to dig for what they need.
We also have a quick area for shoes, and a more closeted one, so those get rotated for everyone too.

I understand your concept of having less and decluttering at the end of each season. I live in an area with 4 distinct seasons. Our temps can fluctuate well over 100 degrees. I feel we actually need more items. Of course some things can be worn longer than one season. But it’s not just a matter of putting a sweater over a top. I think this is especially true if you are outdoors a lot. I know people in the UK who say they have one wardrobe for summer and winter, but just put a jumper or coat on when it's cold, but they tend to live indoors in winter, with just a quick walk from home to car, and car to gym/shop/office. If you are outdoors for hours at a time in winter, a coat on top of summer-weight clothing is just not enough!

I live in NH and need various extreme weather options as it can be -5 or 95 in a year. So I allow myself ONE bin for serious seasonal clothing. It takes 10-15 minutes to switch the real seasonal stuff twice a year and keeps me from staring at wool sweaters in July. 😆 Using the container method this way (ONE bin for this) keeps it maneagable.

I live in Canada and we grew up with the changeover -- About 7 years ago I got tired of the transition (sometimes 4-6 weeks or longer) because the weather is really uncertain -- sometimes we need a flannel shirt in early June, other years, shorts in early May. Out came the bins and there they sat on the bedroom floor where we could dig through them until the change of weather decided to stick and we could finally put everything away. Meanwhile, the laundry was full of both seasons -- chaos! I pared down to my dresser (6 drawers) and closet (1/2 of a regular, not walk-in) that I share with hubby. It took a while, but after being down to 1 bin - just for the heavy sweaters for a few years, I was able to make room for ALL my clothes and the one in one out rule is easy because I KNOW what fits in the space. Dana, your voice is always in my ear when I'm considering something new.... 'does this deserve space in my closet'? and I have a donatable declutter bag for clothing on the floor of my closet for things that get cycled out when they don't fit or don't serve me any more. THANK YOU!

Im so glad you are covering this!Living in New England for 33 years (Maine now 🧥🦞) I have a necessary wardrobe for 100° to -25°. I do not want to look at my wool sweaters in July, or sort past flimsy sundresses in February. No matter how many clothes I reduce a seasonal swap out helps manage essential gear. Minimalism was not born in a cold climate! Some clothing stays put with 10 months of use (long sleeve shirts and blouses) I rotate the bulky wool sweaters and microfleece in before Thanksgiving. Cotton sweaters go away at Christmas, but come back out around Easter, when wool goes back into hiding. Except as a coat because as a yankee I'm too stubborn to put that down puff coat back on!!!! Summer clothing is sometimes swapped in a little too soon after an early warm spell. Also, I've found storing summer clothes in my suitcases handy for winter travel to warm places, and a moth free storage space for wool in the summer.

I have no difficulty pulling clothes out of my wardrobe to be donated, thrown away, or mended. And I can easily manage my current-season wardrobe. But my volume is still too high to allow off-season clothes to fit in my closet and drawers.
So after several years of both routine and seasonal decluttering, I'm at an in-between stage where my fall & spring (temperate-weather) clothes stay in place all year, but summer and winter clothes get rotated in and out.
It's already a lot less work, and more convenient when there's a short-term weather shift. As my clothes wear out or I tire of them, I'll get them down to a volume to fit everything inside year-round. Until then, this system works for me.

I am living in Finland. We have 4 very different saesons. Temperature can be from 92F to -31F (33 celcius to -35 celsius). I have decluttered my clothes and my off season clothes fit in 2 bins. I strore those binn in my closet. I have 2 bins for outdoor clothes and those bins are in my basement. I like to be outside all year round. We have a saying that there is not bad weather, there is just bad clothes for that weather. I don't have a car, so I am walking, going by bike or using a bus or train. Yesterday I was biking and it was hevily raining. I didn't have my rainproof trousers, but I was thinking: it is just rain. And I was happy that it wasn't snowing yet 😂

Easy stuff first, always! I never used to do seasonal changeover, but now I do. My closet is fairly big and I've never filled it. Still have about 2-3' of empty space. But I do put obvious seasonal stuff on one half (coats, sweaters, warm jackets, or hot weather things), and the other half is my current working closet, organised by colour and item type. Some things I don't move, if I can wear them in fall and spring. Caveat: I live in Southern California.

    • @Catbooks
      @Catbooks 3 місяці тому

Adding on: I've learned that even though I have containers, it doesn't mean I have to fill them up! I've also got several kitchen cabinets that have nothing in them, because they're up high, so are inconvenient to get things into and out of, and if I've got things to put in them, I probably don't need them because I use them so infrequently, if ever.

I felt very encouraged by what you said in this video Dana, because I keep all my clothing for all the seasons in my wardrobe. It helps me get creative with my outfits too. On cold Autumn days I'll wear my thermals and then over that a plain summer/spring dress and then a jumper over the dress. It looks as though I'm wearing a jumper with a skirt. It's warm and comfortable.
I like your way of decluttering too. That's how I like to do decluttering myself. I too find it really stressful to have piles of items out all at once and then try to sort through them. I find your method of decluttering one item at a time works really well.
Keep up the good work. Your advice is very helpful. 😊👍

I don't have many clothes, but I love seasonal clothing changes, because I get a "new" wardrobe each time I do it. I need change often and have no extra money. If I can manage to forget about the outfits I have put away for the season, bringing them out again brings happy surprises. I keep a few multi-seasonal items in my wardrobe all the time, and have a specific location for seasonal clothes.
But these are good ideas. Thank you for sharing.

I do have seasonal clothes that get switched around, but I love it! It gives me the opportunity to look at my upcoming seasons clothes with fresh eyes. I also ask myself if I really am looking forward to wearing the pieces I’m putting away. If that’s a No, then it goes away. I’m at a manageable level now and my clothes easily fit in their containers. (I don’t have a closet too, so that makes it exciting 😅)

I only add in a couple of shorter sleeved shirts as I kinda wear the same clothes every day of the year. Never been a clothes horse so it’s not my biggest declutter area. I only have a few pairs of shoes. It’s more of a case of taking the quilt off the bed and leaving the woven cotton blanket and sheet on the bed until it’s just the sheet in summer.

As I watch this video it is Jan 6 2025 and over the last week or so since Christmas I have been on a major decluttering spree of my entire house, including my clothing. For years now, I have kept out of season clothing under my bed. But I recently decided that I no longer want to engage in the dreaded clothing change over. So, I decluttered/ purged the bins under my bed and my closet and made every piece of clothing I own fit in the “container” that is my closet! It’s amazing!

Yes, everyone says that the weather is very changeable where they live. I live in Texas and I don’t have tons of clothes and I don’t see any reason to swap out clothes for the season other than putting the short sleeve tops closer to where I walk in my closet in the summer months and the sweaters and long sleeves closer to the front in the winter season, but I have access to everything all year long. I am blessed with a nice size walk-in closet, but it is by no means full.

I was surprised that he’s very willing to declutter his own stuff if I put all like things out to the bed. (Pants, shirts, coats, shoes, etc) He’s fast if I do that for him. Inspires me to be faster. We now do it every season. Declutters instead of changing.

I love the idea of not doing a seasonal swap! (My mom never does.) For me it’s helpful because 1) it forces me to really look at my clothes twice a year and that helps with decluttering, and 2) it helps me to only see the temperature appropriate clothes at 6AM (hello decision fatigue!)
And it forces me to look at my kids current clothing sizes 😅😂

I have not done my seasonal clothing changeover so the title of your video peaked my interest. I expected you to say that when doing your changeover look at the clothes that you are putting in storage and either donate of trash what you don’t want to keep and the same for the stuff that we are taking out of storage. I never expected to hear you say that you don’t do that anymore. I was thinking there is no way I cannot do a changeover. I then realized that since I started my massive Decluttering at the beginning of this year, half of my closet is now empty. :) I will probably work on pulling out my fall/winter clothes next week but I’m going to do my best to fit all of my clothes in my closet. I really hope that I can make all of the decisions necessary to make that happen. I would love to be done with the changeovers. Thanks Dana!

I so agree with you, Dana. My comment is long because I hope it can help someone else. I am a sewist working on my me-made wardrobe for my new season of life, early & still healthy retirement. As a former 4-H member and sewing project leader, I have always been pretty good naturally and from my career required moving at using the container concept for my wardrobe (Books are a whole other story, friends.) In my first month of retirement, July, I quickly discovered I did not have enough clothes for this new life season. I could not do full loads of laundry weekly, but I had to do laundry weekly to be able to get dressed. What I decided was that my daily wear capsule wardrobe needs 7 bottoms and 14 tops + toppers (I collect these and almost never wear them in my Midwest summer.) Tops I wash after one wearing because I don't have a great sense of smell, but my dear husband does. Bottoms I usually wear 3 times before washing. Now that I am into fall bottoms, this seems to generate two or three full loads for my laundry day every week and I can still get dressed well daily.

The only seasonal thing I do with clothing is swap the winter coats and boots to the hooks by the back door for winter with the running shoes and lighter jackets. The ones that aren't being used are in the front hall cupboard but still accessible during fall/spring if the weather acts undecided as it always does. I'm sure it was different when our 5 kids lived at home but we lived in a different, larger home then.

To the far back are all long sleeve tops, pants, skirts, dress shirts, everyday jeans or skorts, and every day tshirts. Bin system for undies socks and sweaters. 1 drawer in a 2 drawer dresser is mine. Other tshirts, sleep wear, winter leggings/thermal undergarments

If I was into fashion more or liked shorts, skirts, dresses, and winter sweaters, it would be different but at this point in my life, my seasonal clothes all fit into 1 storage bin. I actually have the space to keep them out all year long but I prefer to see the empty space in the closet. Packing them away is also my cue to take a good look at what can be decluttered or needs to be replaced.
