ASML: TSMC's Critical Supplier, Explained

  • TSMC is the world's largest independent semiconductor foundry. It has a 50% share in the market. They supply fabless chip designers like Apple, Nvidia, Qualcomm and AMD. There has been a lot of press and interest recently in its work.
But TSMC has its own suppliers too. These are the people who make the super cutting-edge machines that TSMC operates 24/7. Dutch multinational ASML is TSMC’s most important supplier and the maker of the EUV equipment critical to its N7+ and N5 processes.
In this video I am going to profile this rather obscure company and examine its relationship with TSMC. I’ll also help answer the question of who is “more important” so that the fanboys can better score points against each other on internet boards. Face-off! Who matters more!?
Spoiler alert: They both matter a whole lot to each other.
    Errata:
3:33 I misspoke. TwinScan was first released 2001, not 2006.

Look up Toshiba...they sold milling technology to the USSR in 1987...who used it for weapons technology...these cnc milling machines were developed by the US with Toshiba...similar situation to this...Toshiba was banned from selling in the US any of its products and its corporate leaders were arrested...🤷‍♂️ corporations need to be careful when trying to play superpower politics...it usually doesn't end well.

So basically, in cooking, this would be the scenario:
ASML: The one that provided the oven, blender, etc for cooking
TSMC: The cook himself that magically turn flour and egg into bread with help of the oven etc.
NVIDIA, AMD, etc: The one that make the recipe for TSMC to cook.
Silicon wafer supplier, chemical supplier, etc: The one that supplies the cook with flour and eggs.
And last but not least, YOU: The one who bought, and (hopefully) enjoy the bread.

The relationship between semiconductor equipment manufacturer and customer is a symbiosis.
The EUV technology is jointly developed by ASML and TSMC; like ASML being the production and TSML being the QA.
ASML could not produce EUV equipment in a vacuum (no pun intended); the product needs to be honed by iterative feedbacks from TSMC.
That is why Intel did not insist on exclusivity and allowed TSMC and Samsung to also be customers.
There is both ASML and TSMC IP in the EUV technology.
If that were not the case, then EUV equipment would have been off-the-shelf product, and Intel would have already attained 7nm.
It's a silly question ASML or TSMC; like Laurel or Hardy? Or Martin or Lewis?

I hadn't appreciated the US origins of it before and now I understand (even if I don't agree with) the leverage they are applying. Quite why the US thinks this is a zero sum game is anyone's guess. Note that ASML would have finished EUV without the co-investment program. The program was started to speed up the development so that ASMLs costumers wouldn't delay on their roadmap. ASMLs DUV platform has been the main finacial driver to the development of EUV.

Note.. the investment made by Intel,Samsung and Tsmc was also related to research the 450 mm wafer platform and the feasibility of 450 mm wafer... 400 enigeers worked for almost on that concept. Intel, Samsung and Tsmc pushed very hard for this 450mm wafer stepper.. other waferfab suppliers didnt like the idea at all, due to revenue loss. 450mm wafer would create a lot more chips on to a single wafer. So these suppliers where afraid that they would sell less equipment.. asml didnt mind the idea because the litho steps.. how many time the wafer was exposed on the scanner would stay the same..
Asml stopt the program due to uncertain times in de microchip market and want to speed up Euv.
      Also note.
Intel made a hugh profit when selling the asml shares from the co investment program.

Part of the reason the US has a standing in banning the export of EUV technology is that the other suppliers involved in the process - Applied Materials/LAM research/Cymer - are all US companies. Without the whole set of tools, the EUV scanner by itself cannot produce wafers.

    • @Timberjagi
      @Timberjagi 3 роки тому +4

its a bit in the middle, Cymer is owned by ASML. ASML bought the euv light source from Cymer but they made very little improvement on it. After they bought Cymer ASML started helping the development of the light source and finally made it working. officially the USA can only decide banning export with products over 25% made in the USA. the EUV machine of ASML only contains 16% (that is why the USA is working hard on changing the 25% rule).

I'm a retired software engineer and was working in the middle of tech in 1980's. It was easy to be in the "middle" of tech back then because it was so small. One area I worked in was CDs and Philips was a player but always seemed lagging and old. Now I happen to see a video about EUV and wow, pretty cool to see how people stuck at it and invented something so remarkable. Same with AMD. They were always the red headed step child and now I hear how dominate they are. So impressive. Makes me almost want to get back to programming but unfortunately software development really hasn't changed from the 1980's. The debate is still which text editor to use. TEXT EDITOR??? We use ASCII art to try and document code. Crazy.

Thank you sir. I find it interesting that the technology leaders on this planet seem so sluggish in progressing to a smoother "global" effort from efficient supply chain to final product. But instead we still struggle with the constant bickering of politics and the resulting destabilization of armed conflict. We need to grow up and act like a planet instead of a sphere covered in borders that hinder our progress as a civilization. With that said, even our biggest corporations seem to be leaning to aggressive competition. "The people who can destroy a thing, they control it.”

ASML does generally not fall under US export restrictions. Originally an export license was issued,. The Americans put pressure on the Dutch government to (temporarily) revoke the license a bizarre interview with the US ambassador Hoekstra made also clear that the US had no real possibility to prevent the deliveries to China other than threatening their US based operation.

I think successes are only a part of the story of how accomplishments came to be; the often forgotten part is the failures. The scientific and business endeavours that attempted working in the same goal field effectively pruned the field of approaches until the most viable ones remained, where a prediction wasn't possible, so even when they failed, they contributed to the end goal.

The reality is that there won’t be a successor to EUV technology for decades or ever. As other advance known technologies such as X-ray, Nanoimprint Lithography and Multi-Electron beam lithography have significant limitations and inferior capabilities compared to EUV. Regardless there is still much we can do to improve with EUV. As there is already work and roadmaps at ASML to increase the Numerical Aperture to allow the resolution to reach 6.7nm or even 4nm.

@@johnuferbach9166 The resolution I am talking about is in relation to the lithography source. Which is the laser/light source that is used to make patterns.
The node names that manufacturers use are supposed to be in relation to the gate length. However in reality they are simply market terms. As they have no connection to the size of the gate or any aspect of the transistor.
