Nice job Dom. I will keep this video in mind when I do my topsides. I am going to try Coppercoat or Blue Water Copper Pro SCX 67 for my bottom paint. The boat does look nice!!
I'd love to check out that non-skid! I use Kiwi Grip on the boat and skimboards/surfboards. Used ToughCoat on my deck (hurts your bare feet but wears like cast iron) once.... I used the Pettit on my boat. Top to bottom. Came reco'd by Herrington Harbour and Defender marine. Barrier coat, bottom paint, metal coat, the EZPoxy. Love that stuff. I found it better than the Interlux in some ways, on par others. So far 2 months in the water and the Hydrocoat SR has ZERO growth on it! None! But my boot stripe is wet so we'll see how the EZPoxy works with On/Off Gel in the fall/winter to remove that Chesapeake Scum line. Frog tape works much better with Pettit paints. Not sure why but the blue tape I got those drips under it. Frog tape (Harrington Harbour staff shared a roll and told me) I had nothing, perfect line. Looks fantastic!! Wear sunglasses or you'll go blind with that shine!
I did remove some of the hardware, several cleats, hatch hardware, but i did not want to re-bed the had rails as i would have to remove the head-liner. It would be good to remove as much as you can. Thank you for watching.
Here I am again, I guess. Haha. Whenever I look for videos you pop up for some reason. Anyways. I thought about doing the paintjob on my boat soon because its in a really bad condition. The previous owner didnt take care of it very well.. :( And since I want to resell it later on I want to make the best out of it. When I was younger I learned the painter trade, and what we used to do with basically everything we worked on; Scrub down the old paint first, smooth out the the walls etc and then apply the new paint. One time I was supposed to skip that on the request of the customer, and what happened? Where the old paint dried out and got loose we painted over, had all those dry, little paint bits in our rollers and brushes, and it took forever to pick those out with your fingers. Took us 3 weeks instead of 2 days. So were done and get a call 4 months later on from the very customer, very angry, telling how part of the wall we painted just came down. What happened? Well, the new paint was pretty heavy on the wall and stuck well to the old paint, but the old paint didnt stick to the wall anymore. The boss told our customer before we went to work that that might happen, but she wanted us to get it done "quick". So my thoughts are derailing a little, but I always figured youd need to take down the old paintjob before applying a new one. Apparently not. Thanks for the video. Would have loved a little bit more of actual painting action, but I guess its kind of annoying with the cam in the way etc when you are working on your own. Cheers and happy sailing.
Thanks for the great vid. If your fiberglass deck is already textured by the manufacturer, do you have to completely grind away all the non-skid to achieve a perfectly smooth surface or do you just apply the non-skid paint directly on top of the cleaned surface?
Great video, it gave me more confidence to paint my own deck. After a year, did you notice any wear? Folks say that you need to strip everything from the deck, or you see wear sooner. Obviously, I would prefer to do my deck like yours...
the white is still great, i only did one coat of the non-skid, no singes of wear but I see some areas with a little white coming through where i missed the first time so I am putting on another coat, so happens i am doing it today :)
Thank you very much from Australia. I take it that you have a fibreglass yacht. 1. Were you painting a non-skid paint over an area that was already non-skid? 2. Did you prime over the whole surface first? My Black Soo has a moderately chaddy degraded deck, but it is ply with (I think epoxy over the ply), but I want to give it a 52nd birthday present of a new paint job. I don't think that I will have access to the Pettit products.
so, areas of the deck that dont get nonskid, what do you put down? Primer and then easy poxy? its that it? and then on non skid areas you use items like kiwi grip?
Hi Captain! I think we have the same boat. Is yours a Cal 29? I am so grateful for you an people like you who share their experience and knowledge. Thank you so much! I have never really been a handy person, when I owned a home I would call a handyman, but I want to be more self sufficient and now that I am a boat owner and don't have a lot of money and don't have a steady job, I need to do stuff myself. My boat is definitley in disrepair and needs a lot of work. I have been planning on painting it this summer. Now that I have some money I am planning on starting this weekend. Do you happen to know how much you spent on this project? You may have already had the tools. I believe I need to buy a sander and the other tool you used. I have to rewatch the video, I don't remember the name of it. When I rewatch your video I will definitely take notes. Thanks again! I hope you are well!
Hello Shannon, thank you for watching. My boat is a 1974 Islander, 30ft. I used Pettit EZ-Poxy and it took about 2 qt of the white and 2 qt of the non-skid and 2 qt of primer., around $40 per qt of each, the other cost was the paint rollers, paint pan, and some other misc items, Oh and 1 tube of Pettit Flexpoxy 7076 for repairing the stress cracks and other damage. The prep was the hardest part, Everyone who walks by and knew how the book looked before loves the it. Next year i am going to do the hull :) I am sure you will do a great job,
Great video, I have to redo some of my balsa core that means peeling back my deck skin, thinking about sanding it down lightly and painting it, three years later are you still satisfied with the job? How did it hold up? does it look good? Easy to repair if scuffed? Thanks! Earned my sub
NICELY DONE Skipper ! when i was given the notification for this video it showed a boat, and i gotta tell ya, i actually thought that it was a "newer " boat that you were going to purchase , not YOUR boat that you were doing such a nice paint job on!! Again, well done sir....
Thanks for this video! I think I’ll feel confident now... I have wooden deck floor under carpet in my bow rider. I plan on pulling up the carpet (it’s all worn down), my question is do you think this process will work on a wooden deck floor? Ideally I’d like to have a non slip deck and applying a teak decking sheet sporadically for aesthetic decoration.
Ive watched this video on repeat for several years for my boat projects just to now find you are 10 miles away from me
we should try to get together 😀 dom@vagabondepicurean.com
Great info Dom, As always! Hell I have a hard time getting the energy to wash my boat! LOL!
Very helpful video. Thanks for the tips and the step by step process. I'm looking forward to my own project now.
thank you for watching

Really want to see all the deck hardware & misc come off.

This was super helpful thank you!
thank you for watching, i am happy this was helpful
Thanks man, appreciate you
Thanks for the helpful video
What did all the paint and product cost you?
Awesome video. What is tipping? Why would someone need to do that process?
Great video!!!!!!!
thanks and thanks for watching Happy and safe boating ⛵🛥
Update on this paint ?
Thanks
Great video - thanks so much for sharing. Would be interested to know how long this took.
your welcome, happy holidays🌴🍾

thanks for watching. the painting was sort of boring, the prep work and taping took most of the time.
How durable is Paint Job?

just apply over the old non-skid, yes be sure you clean it very good, i scrubbed it twice. Thks for watching

Hello Chris, I did put the non-skid over the current non-skid area, however it can be put over smooth areas, thank you for watching
Nice work, I'm about to paint my boat with the EZpoxy products.
How has it held up? I've heard mixed things about how the one part paints hold up.
so, areas of the deck that dont get nonskid, what do you put down? Primer and then easy poxy? its that it? and then on non skid areas you use items like kiwi grip?

Vagabond Epicurean Thanks so much for the info. So an Islander resembles a Cal.
@@VagabondEpicurean I have another question, did you use Petit paint because it is the best or because they are a sponsor of your UA-cam Channel?
@@shannonclark-rivera6676 Both, I only promote product I believe in and use, I turned down two other companies
@@shannonclark-rivera6676 also three other of my boat neighbors have used it and are VERY happy with the results

This looks like the same tools and boat from the Petit video series? Is this your boat?
yes i said they could use used my video so they provided me with some paint :)
Thank you!
Your welcome
Did you sand the whole boat? Did you prime the whole topside? Did you paint the nonskid surfaces with the white first?
Thanks for this video! I think I’ll feel confident now...

yes i think it will work on wood
Also i think you may want to coat the deck with basic epoxy 1st to smooth out the deck
Vagabond Epicurean Thanks this is great! I plan on following your steps precisely.
every project is a little different, but i am sure you will do great send some pictures when you get time dom@vagabondepicurean.com
Will do! Hopefully in October when I pull the boat out of the water.
Love your accent .... could listen all day! What state is it from?
Chicago, IL
How much did the materials cost you?
1 question. did you sand the non skid down?
no just a GOOD cleaning
@@VagabondEpicurean thank you
Did you put the primer on the non-skid area of the boat?
no, 2 coast of the non-skid thanks for watching
What do you mean by tipping?
you roll the pain on and then LIGHLY go over it with the tip of the paint brush, use a high quality paint brush
thnaks for watchihg
hi there, after 2 years how does your deck look?
still looks like the day i painted it, well even a little better as i waxed the white areas this year, the non-skid still good.
Can I use topside paint on my deck?
yes that is what i did, non-skid in some areas
What tool did you use on the Drexel.
Sorry what tool did you use on the dremel.
Sorry, what tool did you use on the dremel.
one like this
Humm the pictures did not show up it was a cone shat sanding stone
Nice job. Now try not to fall off the slip as you are walking away and looking back to admire your work. :)
LOL thanks
Surprised people are allowed to do work on their boats when it’s in the slip. Maybe marinas have their own rules?
Nice shirt. Subtle.
What happened to the audio??? Shame
i don't know, it just worked for me, thanks for letting me know
