- We finally got all the one part primer scraped off the boat, now let hope we don't run into any more obstacles. We decided to go with Awl Grip 2-part primer and topside paint. The two part paint cures through a chemical reaction so we won't have to wait days for it to dry.
Fingers crossed it goes smoothly from here on out!

I can't afford to be a member yet but this has been an awesome experience following your experience restoring your boat. I got the fever to want to find my own boat but it's going to be a year before I could even think about looking for one. This colour stands out just like you guys. You did some things you did not think through, however, everyone has to learn by doing. I fucked up so many times. I know you done with the paint job but here are a few tips.
When mixing either 545 or topcoat don't add the reducer till after your induction time is over.
Cover your mixing container with a air proof lid this keeps air from burning off the reducer. Adding reducer as you go is not a good idea.
When tipping the hull sides start at the water line and tip upward this will cut down on sags.
The bugs "nats" are attracted to the reducer hang a rag saturated reducer near by and 90% of the nats will go to the rag and stay off the paint.

Its great to see Playboy Marine. I hauled out my boat there 37 years. The hulls of my catamara were covered with blisters. So we ground off all the gel coat and removed the blisters in the fiberglass. This was a 42 ft boat with two hulls and it was a nightmare. The biggest change I can see in your videos is that it has been paved. 37 years ago it was sand and bottom paint. The noseethems were terrible and lived in sand you were standing on.
Wow! Glad they paved the area because even paved the noseems were terrible! Always right when we got there and an hour before closing... But they were so bad!

Dark color is going to make a much hotter boat interior in the tropics.
It will be substantially noticeable.

Tip, you should use wide thin rollers that are made for epoxy paints , and tip out with tipping brushes which are wider and shorter haired buy good quality . Mix your awlgrip in batches not all at once . Use tack rags and wear tyvek overhauls they will cut down the dust , but it looked ok.

Yall work so well together and I am trying to guess how far behind we are in the series because I see your intro and you are in the water on anchor in the Caribbean or further.
Guys, next time try to use thinner roller, the one sold for latex paints. That roller does not create bubbles and you can tip with the same roller as you paint. I tried several rollers and that roller worked best - it was also the advise of the pros at the yard.
and always read the instructions and info on paints and primers ... I'm pretty sure that primer problem was mentioned on the can of the primer ... as in temp and humidity... ........ I just checked my paints and dispersion stuff and it states in what conditions it should be used...
oh boy ... one preventable mistake ... but we hiw to get primer off 😅

Great video, I'm glad I stumbled upon your venture. I'm in the process of restoring a boat, and I'm at the painting stage and looking for any tips from videos I've watched. Great job guys!
Thank you! Best of luck, it's not an easy task to take on. Best advice, don't skimp on the paint. Buy the good stuff and take your time on the first few coats, figure out a rhythm, and you'll have it down by your last coat!
@@SpearItAnimal we laid down the first coat today, I wish I could show you the pics we took of the transformation. The boat I'm working on sat under pine trees for 23 years and has gone from a sun-beat military green to a beautiful navy blue. We tried the roll and tip method, but the tipping streaked out bad. After just rolling with a foam roller the finish turned out amazing. We're doing this in Jax, Fla, so as you know we're dealing with heat and humidity. Fortunately, this week has been amazing and it's giving us optimal painting conditions. Isn't it fun to have a work in progress? 😁
@@davetremain8997 awesome!! We had someone come up to us as we were putting on our last coat and said they only rolled it and skipped the tipping as well. If it wasn’t our last coat we would’ve given it a shot. Glad that it’s coming along!! Yah the conditions are always the biggest stressor. We finished right before sunset with our last coat and had one small patch where the condensation caused the paint to fog a bit. But luckily it was also where the decal went 😅

Activate smaller batches of paint for the win. Adding more reducer once the paint starts to harden is not thing. Messing with induction with water? Ouch!
If it ain't white, it ain't right? No escaping the fact that white makes the boat more photogenic. BUT -- We don't live in photographs.

wow!!! That's looking sick!! Incredible job! I ripped apart my Father in Law's pontoon boat and stripped all his painted rails and panels down to bare metal, and rolled ands tipped with topside paint! It came out amazing! But yours takes it to another level!!! awesome!!
Aw, Awlgrip. Yep rolling and tipping. It's more technical than people think. I prefer to spray, especially when I custom paint and airbrush motorcycles and vehicles, etc. But obviously when in a boat yard it is safer to roll and tip. Short of cut and buffing, awlgrip lays out nice generally enough for a boat. Less adding an artistic mural to it then will use clear and cut and buff. But of course unlike other vehicles, boat hulls have waviness too them from the factory and then talking some serious time consuming work to make all that straight. But anyways I know your pain. Especially when doesn't go right. ~Panzik Artistry
