Hi, I am a Norwegian fan who absolutely love your youtube show. You've just saved my day! I have a Marieholm 24. A Swedish, 24 foot cabin cruiser. Which sank last year. Thought the boat was a little too good to be scrapped. But fiberglass / wood work is not my thing. (I a mechanic). So now I take one step at a time to try to learn how to repair it. The hardest thing to fix for me was the nonskid. And you just showed me how. Also struggling a bit with teak doors and hull vinyl upholstery. Just made new pullpit / pushpit for the boat, out of stainless steel. Thanks alot for shearing you`re expertise.
+Tore Bråthen Hi Tore! It's nice to hear that the vid's are helpful on your project :-) The next video I'll do for the nonskid may also be helpful if you're needing to patch larger areas.. Have a great day!
+BoatworksToday Am looking forward to watch your next video. Since there is one major area I shall repair. Corner of the sun deck on the roof of the aft cabin. You are really a great help! Hope you have a great day too!
Woo Hoo Saturday night and a new Boatworks Today video. Seriously, thank you. I learned a lot watching these, what to attempt and not. The history and evaluation. Good stuff.
+George Hatch Have fun with the rehab! She'll remember this for the rest of her life :-) Would love to see some pics as you progress.. If you think about it, please post some pics on my FB page!! facebook.com/BoatworksToday Thank you!
Been waiting for more vids. Thanks! I know (now from experience) how much time and effort goes into producing these. My own channel is a poor example. Sharing your expertise is heartily appreciated.
Awesome!!! I’m feeling a little better already Long story short I just bought a 1975 whaler it’s the 13.7 one. It has like 4 small holes on the deck and two 3” cracks on the floor. I was told to foam fill the holes first then repair it .. I definitely gave this channel a Sub and smashed the like button !!! Thank you for sharing
Great vid. Love your channel. I have a 1985 Bluewater Coastal Cruiser. Previous owner added a lot., Like 100 snaps for canvas stuff. I would love to see a video on removal of old snaps, filling and gel coat back to a "No holes" condition. It's old white gel coat. Easy to color match? That's the part I get hung up on the most.
Working on a 30' Dorado down here in FL and love all the advise and sharing. Starting to paint now with Awlgrip (Which I was scared to death of using until your advise). I am going to use the Softsand on the non-skid. Done some samples and it is great.
Love the videos! Would like to see a fuel tank and complete deck replacement. Some custom fiberglass work would be cool also, such as adding a coffin box or built - in cooler or adding a factory looking livewell to a transom. Keep up the great work!
Hi Thanks for a great video. Gibco Flexmold has all the repair patterns by the square foot so you don't have to make a mold. I would also recommend you use a piece of formica to remove the excess gelcoat or a sharpened wood stick so you don't scratch the gelcoat.
Your videos are so insightful, I had a question, how would you fill a cavity between gelcoat and fibreglass? I have a coach house where the two have parted and there are now holes in the non-skid between the gel and fibre. Many thanks
Andy, love your videos! Do you know if 3M 5200 will adhere to PVA? Thinking of trying 5200 for small ( 1.5" diameter or less) non-skid deck repairs versus gelcoat because of its flexibility vs gelcoat. And, the color happens to be an almost perfect match for my gelcoat. Your thoughts? Thank You!
Thanks again and again for all amazing video with clean explanations. I am now refit a free sailboat in Mallorca - Spain. :-) May I need your suggestions: The boat is with geo Coat, I am now need clean and after clean I just need paint again with Geo Coat, right? And how can Apply the geo coat in the nonkids area without lose the grips? Thanks a lot.
I have damage to my hulls with deep gelcoat chips. I can gently clean the chipped areas with a Dremel and then apply gelcoat. To get the gelcoat thickness I need it will take several coats. I've listened to you lament about having to sand between coats of waxed gelcoat and I feel your pain 😖😳 Is it ok to build up several coats for thickness with unwaxed gelcoat then for the final topcoat use waxed gelcoat to cure/harden to a sandable buffable hard finish?
Once again, fantastic video. Quick question, around 10-15 year old aluminium or fiberglass boat? Both from respectable manufacturers. I'd love to see a video regarding your experience on "what to expect" on used boat purchases, with decades used for grouping.
Hi Andy, I very much appreciate your video because I have a old regatta sailboat and I have to repair the non-skid with old hole all around. I've a question: the gelcoat for the mould is with paraffin or not? And the gelcoat I'm going to use for repair must be paraffined too? Thanks so much for replay and many compliments for videos. (sorry for my english)
I am using total boat Gelcoat with wax to make a small repair on my Bayliner 175 BR. I have tried a test batch - one ounce of gelcoat with 11 drops of MEKP but it did not dry completely. The temperature was about 85 degrees. Do I need to add more hardener? Also, should I apply a cover coat to keep the air off the surface. If so what would you recommend I use? The ding is on a vertical surface so should I add a small amount of colloidol silicone to prevent sagging or dripping at the application site?
Do you think this would work for a small repair on a cabin top that has a slight curvature in one, or maybe two, directions? The existing non-skid gelcoat is a bit oxidized. Will the PVA fill the gelcoat pores sufficiently to still release? I'm even more concerned about the how well it will release when making the mold in the first place. Thanks for your great videos!
Thanks Andy, another great how to video. I have a gelcoat non skid on my boat, it's rolled on with a deep textured roller. Not much of a pattern to match My girlfriend loves your daughter's voice signing off...
Awesome man! I have a boat we just bought and we love it! She has a small spot where the deck is delaminating :( I don’t feel like I could fix it myself. Would replacement of the core be more feasible from below or above? Or could an injection be done? How do I find a good fiberglass guy?
Hi Andy. I follow your channel and you do really great stuff!! I am in the midst of trying to make a mould but I seem to be having 2 problems. 1) when applying the pva with a sponge the pva seems to be beading up. 2) thinking that that there was too much wax I decided to wash off the pva and start again. To my horror the pva stained my gel coat. Would you have any advice you could give?
If a final sanding coat is sprayed on and has styrene wax additive, will the wax always go to the surface? What if the sprayed gel coat is upside down? As in gel coat on the keel?
I have a Catalina 30 I need to fix tons of these .. also where tops of the non-skid has been worn off. I was thinking of just painting with Kiwigrip. Do you have an opinion on that product? I would agree that a colour matching tutorial would be fantastic!
I asked this question 8 months ago, I am still looking to repair cracks in non-skid areas, damage where the non-skid has just been damaged - aka tops worn off through the gelcoat. What about just wiping the area very clean with acetone and spraying some gelcoat over the area,, ot "painting" a thin layer????
Thanks. Very informative. But what if the area we want to fill is curved? I read an article that instructed to make a frame from plexiglass over the non skid and pour Silicone RTV to make the mold. And then follow the same steps as you I guess. What is your opinion?
+Alexandros Tsakris You could also make your mold just aft of the damaged area (still on the curved area) and proceed like what was shown in the video :-) Sandbags would handy for weighting the mold as it will conform to the surface and apply an even pressure.. Hope this helps!
I love your videos!! Your giving me tons of inspiration to fix up my Arrow Glass Fiesta cuddy. Any chance of you doing a video on transom and stringer replacement? Keep em coming!!
+BoatworksToday Cool! Thanks!!! I have been binge watching your videos as I've been stuck home from work with a fractured fibula. I am amazed at how much your videos have taught me already!!!
I recently has a soft spot in my deck repair by a professional boat yard and am very disappointed in the cosmetic outcome. While the soft spot is gone the holes drilled to inject it are very visible. The owner of the boat yard says that because the holes had to be drilled in noslip it would have been extremely difficult to restore the pattern, which I find unacceptable. So now what I'm left with is five holes that look like they have been filled with putty and left to dry. Your video makes no slip restoration look relatively simple. Do you think I should try to tackle this myself or should I look for a professional to do it? Your input will be greatly appreciated. FYI, I love your videos!
Can you use a paint that area match rest of the color? I have my swim plat form got little hair line 1/2 inch long crack. I was just going to fill with Gel . Would work you thing ?
Can you send me the king showing how to gel coat non skid texture to a larger area. Also, can you explain how to gel coat up the interior sides where the gel will just not run down the side walls
+zsonic09 When it's aligned correctly, it locks into place. Keep in mind that the mold is a female, and the deck would be a male. The two parts fit perfectly together :-)
Did you make the pattern mold or buy it? Love your channel. I am just in the process of purchasing a ericson 38 and will have to do a lot of the things you show how to do in your videos.Great Job.
+xavytex it's really a matter of getting to know the gun your using for spraying. The one I used has a 1.1mm tip and I had the air set at 30psi with the fan half open and very little material coming out so there is good atomization.. But each gun has its own sweet spot :-). Practice makes perfect!
+Marnie Mason Well, yes and no. You would not be able to create the texture using this mold and paint (paint can't be applied that thick) but you could use some epoxy and the mold to create the texture, then come back over and paint to blend in the appearance. A couple extra steps but it's do-able
How did you know that the mold would patter the same position on the repair piece? You said be careful to ensure it lined up but in the vid you seemingly just taped down without checking too carefully? I’m puzzled 🤔🤔🤔
Are there any books out there that you would recommend? Thank-you for all the videos. My wife and I have two little girls and a Tanzer 26, over the winter I will be taking on some soft spots in the deck. Our boat website is tanzer26.com . Love your channel, a million thanks!

These videos are genius! Bought a Beneteau that needs cosmetic work and these videos are exactly what I need.
I just have to say great work. I've never commented before, but i love your videos, so many questions answered !!!!😂
Woo Hoo Saturday night and a new Boatworks Today video. Seriously, thank you. I learned a lot watching these, what to attempt and not. The history and evaluation. Good stuff.
+Frank P Thank you for the kind words Frank!! Have a great weekend :-)
Any idea where I can buy the nonskid material?
Great to see you back! My little girl and I are rehabbing an old whaler and these videos really help :)
+George Hatch Have fun with the rehab! She'll remember this for the rest of her life :-) Would love to see some pics as you progress.. If you think about it, please post some pics on my FB page!! facebook.com/BoatworksToday
Thank you!
+BoatworksToday sure thing! Will do
Always wondered how to make a patch in non skid. This explains it all. Thank you for making this !
Great vid. Is it possible to effectively compound and polish the same type of non skid ?. Mines looking pretty dull atm.. thanks!
Been waiting for more vids. Thanks! I know (now from experience) how much time and effort goes into producing these. My own channel is a poor example. Sharing your expertise is heartily appreciated.
+Pass Me By Thank you for the kind words! Much appreciated ;-)
Great video. Can you please help us understand how did you line up the mold so it fits perfectly to the exsiting pattern? Thank you

Wow, going to try this non skid repair out very soon. I got the perfect damaged spot to try it out on. Thanks

wow......your vids are just awesome,,,,,,, color matching gelcoat tutorial would be awesome as well as one on polyflake a bassboat too!
Your videos are so insightful,
I had a question, how would you fill a cavity between gelcoat and fibreglass?
I have a coach house where the two have parted and there are now holes in the non-skid between the gel and fibre.
Many thanks
Drill into cavity with a small drill bit, inject resin or gelcoat into cavity with syringe

+Mehmet Can I am intending to put together a small book / guide on this kind of topic! Hope to start it this coming Winter :-)
We have a proverb in Turkish; the blind man asks for only one eye and God gives two! That's just great news, best of luck!
Thank you. I was wondering how you were going to align the pattern.
Hi Andy, I very much appreciate your video because I have a old regatta sailboat and I have to repair the non-skid with old hole all around. Are there issues of non-compatibility between epoxy fillers and resin and the chemistry of non-skid gel coats?
Awesome man!

Are there any alternatives products to use besides PVA. I'm having trouble finding this product in small quantity. Thanks
I enjoy your vids and now I am a subscriber...
Thank you William!! Really appreciate it ;-)
You’re the best, thank you great videos
If a final sanding coat is sprayed on and has styrene wax additive, will the wax always go to the surface? What if the sprayed gel coat is upside down? As in gel coat on the keel?
quick question, how do you spray metalic 2stage paint to this? every time i have a refit.. i cant spray them..
So if you wanted to gelcoat it how do you gelcoat over existing diamond pattern non skid?
Another very impressive video! Your awesome! Thanks!!!!
Very helpful and concise.thank you

Hi
How do you make a non skid gel coat mould?
Thanks
Rob (UK)
Awesome was wondering how I would tackle that !!!
I love your videos!! Your giving me tons of inspiration to fix up my Arrow Glass Fiesta cuddy. Any chance of you doing a video on transom and stringer replacement? Keep em coming!!

Hi Andy, Great video. How important is the PVA? As someone that will do this fix once (I hope), can I mask off the area with tape?
+rjd' For it to turn out well and have a good clean patch, the pva is pretty important.. Not sure about another way to approach it.
what is PVA
Is there a place I can purchase a Boston whaler nonskid mold?
Hello, how did you match the pattern perfect? Is't it easy to have it highspot against highspot?
Where would could you purchase the mold pattern for the non skid? Great video!
Man ur awesome 10x alot for these real useful tips
Can you send me the king showing how to gel coat non skid texture to a larger area. Also, can you explain how to gel coat up the interior sides where the gel will just not run down the side walls
Andy great video as always! Dumb question, is there a trick to lining up the pattern to the repair area since the mold is upside down when doing this?
+zsonic09 When it's aligned correctly, it locks into place. Keep in mind that the mold is a female, and the deck would be a male. The two parts fit perfectly together :-)
+BoatworksToday very cool! thanks for the quick reply!
Did you make the pattern mold or buy it? Love your channel. I am just in the process of purchasing a ericson 38 and will have to do a lot of the things you show how to do in your videos.Great Job.
how do you colour match the gel coat?
Good stuff! Thank you.
WAAYYYYYY better than buying a pre-made (expensive) pattern!
Ok what is PVA?? Can you use that to reseal your nonskid decking
Awesome as usual
the videos are great, thanks 👍👍
+ed r Thank you for watching :-)!!!
Does the female non-skid have a deep enough pattern where it always falls into opposing pattern? You didn't mention lining it up.
Yes it did / does :-) Pretty much locks into place when it's lined up correctly
That turned out great!
+theislandpackrat Thank you! It's actually easier than you might think :-)
where did you get the mold from?
Hello ! I have a question ! How do you do so the PVA doesn't "bead" on a very smooth gelcoat ? Thanks !
+xavytex it's really a matter of getting to know the gun your using for spraying. The one I used has a 1.1mm tip and I had the air set at 30psi with the fan half open and very little material coming out so there is good atomization.. But each gun has its own sweet spot :-). Practice makes perfect!
The fiberglass - whisperer does it again!
thanks
+Phong Do That's funny, I like it ;-)
I need a little help in working with epoxy work I was building boats for year so epoxy is a little different to me so can you give me a little tips
Awesome idea!!!
where would i get that mold?
can these mold patterns work with top paint as well, say awlgrip paint?
+Marnie Mason Well, yes and no. You would not be able to create the texture using this mold and paint (paint can't be applied that thick) but you could use some epoxy and the mold to create the texture, then come back over and paint to blend in the appearance. A couple extra steps but it's do-able
I think not matching the color works well in this video so I can see what you did
Thanks alot 👍👍👍
good stuff!
Thanks. enjoyed it.
+elfaroproductions thank you for the kind words :-)
Thank you!
How did you know that the mold would patter the same position on the repair piece? You said be careful to ensure it lined up but in the vid you seemingly just taped down without checking too carefully? I’m puzzled 🤔🤔🤔
You could just contact gibcoflexmold they have all the patterns for non skid repair much easier
Get out!!!! amazing
