- It happened again. Last season I made a wild speculative theory about how Larys Strong is a skinchanger and green seer, and the next episode of House of the Dragon provided basically everything I could ask for short of a direct confirmation for it. And that has happened again to me with a Larys video. My last video I speculated that Larys Strong had something to do with blood and cheese. Not necessarily hiring them, more allowing the murderous rat catcher and Gold Cloak access to the Queen Helaena, Jaehaerys, and Aemond Targaryen to do the crime Daemon hired them for. At the end of that video, I made a bunch of predictions that it were true, how would that subtly show up on screen knowing how light of a touch the writers like to use with his character. And one after another, they showed up in the episode.

If Larys were true, he would've done all he could to protect Blood at least until Cheese was identified.
However, even if he were true, they'd already learned all they needed: Daemon paid for it.
Cheese had naught else to offer beyond satisfying some vengeance.
Just as a hypothetical (since we all know listening to Helaena could've prevented it, and then after the fact she could ID cheese), what would've happened if they brought the rat catchers to Helaena to ID the culprit?
Aegon - lacking forethought and reason even when calm - would've not held his anger . Since he is stupidly blind to all that his sister-wife says, he would've lacked the wits to listen to her.
He STILL would've killed them all. Just to be sure.
This temperament makes for a horrible executive. Even accounting for the fact his SON and heir had been murdered in his bed. Few humans could be reasonable after such an event.
But a king MUST prioritize his people and his realm.
Ned - foolishly honorable till the end - was that one in ten thousand type man who would lie about his nephew after losing the most important person in his life.
The type to never seek vengeance on Aerys's kids despite what he did to Ned's dad and brother. This is not a normal person.
I argue that Ned didn't fuck up by protecting Tommen, Joff and Myrcella. He fucked up by being unwilling to live a lie and accept his situation.
He should've listened to Renly and seized them. Then (after executing the queen) sent the kids far away or kept them close. Close is probably better considering how Tywin and Jamie would react.
Okay so I haven't thought it all out yet.
But all I know is that yes Ned fucked up, but by being like Batman (incorruptible), his legacy is a fierce legacy. Thousands of men gladly march to an almost certain death just for a CHANCE at honoring their lord and protecting/saving their lord's daughter.
When Tywin died, so did all his power.
Is it better to rule by love or by fear? I argue love. Or at least, that's what George wove into his tapestry. When Ned died, all the North grew upset. An entire generation will spend what remains of their lives seeking retribution. Out of LOVE for a truly honorable man.
But Tywin - the most powerful man in Westeros, one of the best players of all time, when Tywin died, so did all fear of him.
Therefore GrrM wishes us to see that love persists even fear is long gone.
Didn't Aegon say they did this? But Blood couldn't identify the one, so he hung them all. Of course Aegon might have already beat Blood blind, changing what he meant by "couldn't".

Your theory is supported by even more than you say...Next after the "gate of the gods" point should have been Larys convenient exit from the room just as Aegon starts to accuse members of the council. Larys wasn't asked where he was last night because he was already gone...Lucky Larys.
Good call! One of the downsides of making timely content for the season is that I can't always catch everything. Luckily, other observant folks pick up what I miss.
Larys stated he’d questioned all staff and killed any traitors and
then in the same episode, someone on the staff killed a member of the royal family.
If this was a poorly written show, that definitely could be a coincidence.

Joe is suggesting Larys is a warg, not a greenseer. Those are different things. Greenseers are 1000x more rare.
It would make sense that the guy that wags rats would be aware of the rat catcher at all times.
Also I feel that Alicent had something to do with there being a lack of guards like she didn't want to get caught during her sneaky links

@@williamhermann6635 It would make sense in a way too since both characters seem to be magical, secretive, and their motivations unknown and confusing. They're very similar characters and perhaps that's done on purpose
@@MrFredstt Larys is a Strong and Alys is believed to be a Strong bastard, Larys is the Lord of Harrenhall and Alys appears at Harrenhall, Alys and Larys are nearly anagrams of each other, and both are obvious old god magic users. Its like they're cut from the same cloth.
I think that the maid was definitely under Larys' employ. At the start of the episode, he even said as much. Her job wasn't to alert the guards, or even service the rooms...she was gathering intel for Larys. When she saw something suspicious, she went straight to her boss, Larys, to see if she should alert anyone else or to let whatever is going on to play out.
The lack of guards around Helaena and her kids is all Criston's mistake. He simply did not want other kingsguard to see/hear what he's doing in Alicent's room. Can't be lord commander of a celibate order whilst simultaneously sleeping with the queen dowager. Not only protecting his reputation, but Alicent would go along with emptying the apartments of guards for the same reason. They don't want anyone to know. The folly is they assumed that they were safe in the holdfast, and that if anyone suspicious showed that the servants would go run to alert the guards looking after Aegon.
Unfortunately, those servants they were banking on working as breathing security alarms were either fired by Larys or on Larys' orders to do the exact opposite (they're gonna look the other way & just tell Larys).
If Criston and Alicent weren't so wrapped up in hiding their nightly hook up, they wouldn't have left such a blatant opening for Larys and Daemon (or anyone else for that matter) to exploit.
In their defense you prob wouldn't suspect Rhaenyra would ever allow a hit on kids to take place or that someone would be able to do it without her authority

I think Helana knows something is up with the rats. She kept mentioning them could’ve been from b&c or she can sense they’re being watched through them.

Larys knowing the name of cheese but wouldnt say it so aegon would make the call of killing all the rat catchers then otto gets pissed off at aegon while aegon have that idea "otto was your dad hand" that larys himself gave him that idea 💀 your theory makes sense specially in the books the royal family was heavily guarded but they change that into empty and make cole have s*x with alicent cuz larys cannot control cole but maybe he can with the other royal guards 🤔🤔
U know how Alicent says the gods are punishing her for her sins? Maybe this was a way for Larys to also punish Alicent for sleeping with Criston Cole and of course the other reasons as well. This was well put together and I look forward to these videos

I’d venture to say he’s more akin to Varys. Opposite sides of the same coin. Manipulating the realm from the shadows while playing their roles. Littlefinger wanted to shine and blow minds. Get the girl. Be the one left standing.

Not a book reader...But since last season I have had the idea Larys is moving everything into position to rid the world of Dragons. If the children of the forest do have something to do with the whites, then a world without dragons is easier to release the whites on. Lots to include like Larys' connection to the isle of Faces/children, levels of magic in the world, and so on. He is seriously one to watch in the background...great vid.
Great video as always. Here's my take: The way Larys benefitted the most from B&C is that he got "dispose of" much of the Red Keep staff, and got to personally hand-pick an entire new staff. That is obviously huge for a character like Larys. If he had a part in B&C though, I don't believe we'll ever be told about it.
It would be amazing if the writers were so detail-oriented that they included the line about the Gate of the Gods just to give a hint to those with knowledge of Kings Landings layout, but realistically I think they included that line because that's how it was in the books, and it just sounds better, more official, and is more immersive than if he just said "Yea we caught the guy." The fact that Daemon has not yet taken Harrenhall was likely an oversight or just something they didn't care too much about because the vast majority of viewers wouldn't see any issue.
Larys catching the killer also get's him in Aegon's good graces, and the camera focusing on him during Aegon's speech I think was more to represent how Larys takes advantage of tragedies, and showing him entering with his calm demeaner while the King breaks down is great symbolism on that front.
I think publicly hanging the rat-catchers was big for Larys too, because he knew it would sow discord between Otto and Aegon, and he wants that badge. And I think much of the staff being absent during the killing had more to do with Alicent and Cole than it did with Larys. They would've wanted privacy and likely had minimal staff in the upstairs quarters. It would just add to the guilt they already feel for letting it happen, but that's probably another thing that won't be directly addressed in the show.
I can't see the show making Larys a skin-changer(even though I love that theory), just because having him control rats, maybe even having a little pet rat that he pets, would be a bit cartoonish for the vibe of the show. I do think the amount Larys benefits from B&C is awfully sus, but from the famous conversation between the two characters Larys is most often compared to, we know that "chaos is a ladder," and we are being shown how Larys takes advantage of these situations.
Larys benefitted so much from the murder. You can't convince me he didn't have a grubby little hand in it.

She was wrong about how many legs are on a millipede in season 1, but that assumes Westeros has millipedes similar to real life.
Since I assume Heleana can never be wrong about bugs, then the obvious answer is that Westerosi millipedes are slightly different than real world millipedes.

Larys is the HotD version of Littlefinger. He uses chaos as a tool in his own quest for power to move from a nobody in a lesser house to a powerful manipulator.

When Haelena said she feared the rats, honestly the first thing that went through my mind was the rat-spys in the palace as well as their King, Larys. But the next scene cut to the rat catchers and my mind followed that red herring.

Even if he wargs into the cats they are not as inconspicuous as the rats.
The rats were everywhere in the rooms above the beds etc, place that cats may not be allowed.
Also this is the origin story of the cats in the Red Keep that Arya 100+ years later is seen chasing. IIRC later with Arya the cats were mainly in the “basement” of the Red Keep not so much on the upper levels.
Yeah it could be a bit of whoopsie by Larys, gets rid of the rat catchers to make a bigger problem for himself. But as I said, skinchangers can use cats so maybe he would just adapt.
Have you ever lived with cats? Those furry bastards can get *everywhere*, especially in a big castle full of tunnels, while they're being controlled by a sinister skinchanger. And people generally mind having a cat hanging out in the room with them far less than noticing a rat nearby - Larry could just curl up on a pillow and openly spy on anyone as a cat, or even curl up and nap on Alicent's lovely feet!
But cats have the advantage that people like them more than rats. So it could be easier to get near people

At this point in the realm Dragons and their magic were very much alive. Its not outrageous to think other magic was not as alive too. Helena seen it. This works.

The fireworks 😅. Larys is diabolical, but a very well written and acted character. But, you know, among the Greens you'd think Otto might raise questions about there not being any guards to protect Helaena and her children. Also, Aemond now knows the existence of the secret gate/tunnels. Will he use it in some way? I should think so. This is how Larys will spirit always Jahaera and Aegon later.
Holy Fuck... this makes so much sense. I was wondering why they kept bringing up the Rats on Screen in Season 1, and now thinking that it was Larys the whole time, spying on the queen and everyone... damn. Valid Theory.

During the blood and cheese episode I felt like showing us haelena walking all the way from her apartment to Alicents room without a single guard in sight was obviously done for a reason. Because it makes no sense that the queen and her kids would have no guards on them and even stranger still that not a single guard was anywhere in the castle. Especially because they are at war and the last move was they killed their enemies son. There should be guards all over the place especially around the royal family. But the show deliberately showed us there were no guards. So I figured they are trying to tell us someone let this happen. Larys is the obvious person, but why? How does it benefit him. Maybe pushing the war further along but again , why? The only thing I can think of is chaos is a ladder? I don’t really think he’s a warg, I just don’t think the show is doing that. The only thing to suggest it is the rats they keep showing us, although I can’t find another reason for them either. I just think they would have done more to bring us to that conclusion.
But yes the points you bring up like him not questioning blood further, I also found strange. I thought of a line up as well. I just can’t figure out how working against the greens benefits him. I guess we’ll see.

It would make sense for Larys to work for Daemon cause after killing the Strongs and Lanore faking his death it opened the door for Daemon to swoop Rhaeynar

Larys is playing both sides against the middle & helping to keep the conflict at 11 so everyone is too distracted to notice him.
I suppose this means that all the cats let loose in the Red Keep to handle the rats was a decision Larys wasn't too fond of LOL

To be fair Cheese had no reason to or showed no signs that he would betray the royal family when Larys reviewed everyone. What doesn't make sense is that he stayed around, instead of trying to meet up with Daemond for his money, especially knowing that Larys just killed those who he felt couldn't be trusted.
i really like the theroy as larys being a greenseer/shapeshifter and i'd really wish it was true bc as you said in previous videos it's larys is framed in ways that imply he might be. and i love these kind of visual implications in general. anyway beware the confirmation bias because the way they0ve written this episode (larys picking the stuff and the stuff betraying them, just to bring up one example) is either one of the best script ever written with an amazing attention to details OR the worst plot holes ever where they wrote larys killing the traitous stuff to make him look cartoonishly evil and then forgot about it for the next scene. maybe it's me, i've been burnt by to many writers screwing up the stories i loved and speculated about and i dont trust people to write clever things anymore

I admit I'm selfishly glad these clues are too subtle for most of the fandom (including me) to pick up on. Otherwise, I would be encountering even more hate directed at Larys, and more shaming of me for desiring and stanning him.
I wish they had gone with how it happens in the book and Cheese never being found and that leading to the execution of ask the rat catchers.

I preferred the version of Larrys scandalized by gossip and eating a cookie in S1 E3. (knowing what he's capable of in hindsight, that moment is hilariously incongruous.) That inconspicuous, nonthreatening presence around the ladies of Viserys Court is where he gained his foothold. After all, who would be a better source of gossip than the matrons of the highborn. Boy-o started trading secrets early, gaining confidence, and learning what the most reliable sources among the highborn & servants were. He's a viper playing the long game; adept at hiding in plain sight by cloaking himself in harmlessness & helpfulness.
Larrys Strong is like the perfect mix of *L* ittlefinger & V *arrys* . Not a coincidence, methinks. He's not precisely everybody's friend, but he's an Court ally & valuable resource for ALL of the ruling council except, ya know, the dude he just got fired. He's going to orchestrate Crusty Cole being sent away to lead an army, bet. "Oh my stars & garters, now you simply must rely on me" .
Otto relied on Myseria, Larrys was aware of this, and the moment an opportunity presented itself, he tried to eliminate her. Myseria survived b/c her self preservation is grounded in living by her wits, and she has excellent instincts. I hope she lives at least long enough to see him paid back in the same bloody coin. @@kedrprao Cause he knew that whatever he did to support Team Black at that point wouldn’t have mattered, at the very least in the end he could be there to “take care” of Aegon the 2nd (if you know what I mean which would ensure that Team Black ends up continuing once the last Male Heir and the last Female Heir get eloped.
Plus remember, if he is a Warg, then when he dies he will go into his Rat which could explain Aegon’s mysterious death. Either by killing him as a rat, or willingly putting himself as a poisonous addition to something that Aegon consumes.
I don't think he's team black. But I can see him switching sides to get more power.

The show may delay the implementation of the cats, there was no mention of the cats in the episode and Otto isn't hand anymore so it's possible that the show won't bring in the cats until they start to suspect Larys
