How do people look at Clark shooting Chloe down every single time, never giving her a chance, and think that there was a triangle? Chloe was a third wheel, not a third line.

They teased the potential enough that people were in. And his relationship with Lana was always just so sad and dramatic, with all the lying and the secrets. Any time they teased the idea of him with Chloe it was much more free and happy. Especially in later seasons

Yeah, love triangles are absolutely terrible. But even then, it wasn’t limited to just CW shows. It worked on network tv somehow 😂

I loved this discussion! I've always thought this persistent focus on the relationship drama was one of the weaker parts of Smallville. Chloe and Clark's friendship stabilizes in season 3, if I remember correctly. For Chloe, Clark is the one that got away, and I think a lot of us can empathize with that. As for Lana, I feel like she as a character lacked a certain amount of self-definition outside of the relationships. Michael is correct that it makes the character weaker. As soon as Lois showed up, most of the audience was pretty ready for Clark to move on, but the drama with Lana went on until season 7.

I agree but I also think it was part of Clark’s development that they wanted to finally wrap up. So he could be ready for Lois, despite it taking forever. In real life too, it takes most of us a long time to get over our firsts loves. Some guys hold on to it forever and start treating women badly now because of their hearts being broken. Not trying to rag on guys or anything, but if is a very real reality too. Women do this as well. But I agree they could have wrapped it up in season 4/5 and allowed her character to have her own sorta arc that takes her off the show. Although I kind of like the way things went at the same time. I agree with Kristen too though, love triangles are so outdated and I can’t stand when it’s a constant angle done in these shows/movies. There is so much more opportunity to develop women and showcase their emotional maturity as well. I was really proud of Clark by season 9, I was like, finally, he’s over Lana and he can move forward to her being the one. I hated that in the red kryptonite episode Lois kisses clark and he’s back to that more edgy version of Clark but he’s still hung up on Lana, and Lois is like let the past go, this is your future and he’s like we’re in the present. I was eye rolling all the way through that, like come on and then at the end of the episode Clark is talking to Lois and she’s likeC “I must have really liked you” because of her burning him a white snake CD (lol I do like the classic making him a CD bit) even tho we had mp3 players back then tho lol) but still that’s the moment where Clark should have realized that it was okay to move on, but I’m sure the writers had rules if they wanted to keep their jobs. It is what it is, but I loved show overall despite the creepy, pervy moments with Lex lol. They can’t get away with that now in these shows now, they would get cancelled immediately which would be natural given the content, it’s inappropriate. A cop out triangle was done because they knew he would exit the show soon, so they didn’t wanna waste time bringing in a new character. Plus it would keep the tensions between Lex and Clark.
Sorry - I got super into what I was saying. Have an awesome day! 😁

For me it never felt liked a Love Triangle. Chloe just had a crush. It seemed it didn’t last. for Clark it’s always been Lana or Louise. I never looked at anyone less professional. By the way Michael Rosenbaum is the best Lex in media. (Tv and films, animated and live action).

I disagree with your lex comment. If you'd said "best live action lex" then okay, but you included animation.
The Lex Luthor voiced by Clancy Brown is the best. He appears in the 90s superman cartoon and then later in the justice league cartoon. Funny enough: Rosenbaum voices the flash in the same justice league cartoons.

I get what they're saying, for sure. But I think it has to be acknowledged that love triangles do happen in real life. Not as dramatically as in a lot of these shows, but they happen, especially when you're young and hormones are pushing you in all directions.
What always annoyed me was when a love triangle made it obvious who the person was going to choose, and the other was just a speed bump to delay the intended couple from getting together like Kristin said. It comes down to how it's written

Ive watch the whole series a couple of times through (I was unemployed and needed an escape) and the writers definitely made the whole thing WAY more melodramatic than they needed to. But then I felt that Chloe was superfluous once Lois was introduced into the show. And you can tell because they kept changing Chloe's role. She was the confidente, the secret keeper, but thats not a job and she had to do something else once Lois and Clark started reporting. So they inflected her with Brainiac and turned her into a super hacker. Honestly, Chloe should have died or left Smallville somewhere in the mid-point of the run. Before Doomsday and the two Jimmy Olsons.

    • @ChestRockwell24

I actually liked the way they handled her. She wanted to be a journalist, essentially be a Lois lane(this is why early on people thought she would somehow become lois). Then she finds out about Clark's powers and sees that maybe she can also take on a bigger role.
And also, not to nitpick, but she was super hacker even before brainiac, and after that entire thing was over she still had her skills. I like how in the end she basically is like a talent scout for the justice league, bringing all these amazing beings together.

Capable too, she could have a better storyline. I don’t mind a love triangle when it doesn’t become the characters’ entire storylines or a crutch the show falls back on that detracts from the main story. But yeah when there’s two female love interests, their entire story does seem to revolve around the main male character's feelings about them that week or episode and both women/girls always end up hated, with one viewed as the villain preventing the other from becoming the “real” sole love interest. Yet this doesn’t often happen with male love interests, coz the show will somehow find a way to revolve around those two, not the female lead

And this is the biggest shame of SV in my opinion. If there was one thing that was unbelievable about the show, it’s not that Clark came from another planet and had powers, it’s that Lana would stick around for Clark for 6 YEARS going through this. Any sane person would have cut their losses and moved on by season 3. And that “will they won’t they” only led to a hand full of episode of actual relationship for it to go to shit again. I personally felt robbed because Lana is Clark’s gf in the comics in HS and in this show, that’s not what happened. It became so toxic! That Bizarro episode is so hard to watch now 🥶 But I’m glad it’s not just me, and that the actors themselves felt that way. The way Clark was gaslighting Lana was breath taking 😂 “Lana, I wasn’t in that truck. There’s nothing that means more to me than your eyes. But who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes???” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m so glad they didn’t to this on The Flash because that would have been *pure* bs since Iris is his whole foundation for keeping his sanity among all temporal changes. And the show didn’t die when Barry and Iris got together. There’s so much story to tell about making a relationship work. I guess because of the times the SV writers didn’t see that. “Will they won’t they” was everywhere on every show.

As far as the "hate" for female leads goes... It's probably more that some people liked Chloe / Lana / Lois more, and it wasn't so much about who Clark liked, as much as, who that viewer wanted to see win and be happy (and who they thus saw as obstacles to said win and happiness)
I think I liked Chloe more back then, although 20 years later, rewatching it a little with family, I'm more partial to Lana for some reason... Maybe because I've had Asian girlfriends in the years between. lol

Clark Chloe and Lana wasn't a love triangle. The only times Clark kissed Chloe that I can remember, were during I believe it was their Homecoming dance, and after getting the class ring made of red kryptonite. That's it. The rest of the time, Clark's testicles were safely tucked away in Lana's purse. He dated other women for one episode at a time, if even that long. Lana on the other hand, dated Clark, Clark's football coach, Clark's best friend, Clark's twin. I remember a while back, while watching the series, I wrote out a full psychoanalysis of Lana Lang. Michael might like reading something like that, it would add a whole other dimension to the Talkville podcast.

As far as romance goes, I think Smallville came at a time of transition between the earlier form of superheroes and current form. In the past, there would often be no romance at all because it distracts from the adventure.
Even superhero couples usually wouldn't have much PDA or expression of romance.
I personally liked the focus on just the adventure in such shows. Romances take up screen time - although one imagines that it also makes the shows more approachable to girls.

How was Chole even a love Triangle? She was basically just a third wheel. Although if they wanted to be more accurate to the comics, Clark should have just dated Lana until he moved Metropolis and then you could have seen how Lana and Clark slowly became into Lois and Clark.

I'd have much preferred that. They could have focused on but trying to hook her up with Lex, and not tried to ruin her character.
Honestly, towards the end the writing just let her down hardcore. They had no idea what to do with Lana so they just turned on a Soap Opera and said: "YESSS" and copied that.
      Meanwhile, character growth everywhere else....-ish.

Just to answer your q - the "love triangle" trope has zero to do with "logic" & relies solely on audiences perceiving a potential fave choice to root for a relationship with the character(s) they're focused on.. thus the favoritism by the extremist "fans" & how shipwars happen, even with unlikely, unreasonable, or even impossible combos. Then there's the subtropes - so many will always have a soft spot for "best friends that find love together", it's inevitable that any such pair will end up with some viewers cheering them on. Add to that, promotional material, various reviews, discussions, etc including magazine interviews which zoom in on all those tropes.. & they push the idea more to further audiences that fall for it. That all definitely factored in here too. 🤷‍♀️

As I've said before I've always hated love triangles in shows. They just drag them down and creat unnessacery drama that isn't needed. Smallville was honestly no exception to that. I agree with Michael that they really became annoying after a great while, particularily the Clark/Chloe/Lana triangle in the early seasons. Sometimes I honestly felt a little bit of a headache watching this triangle play out. Also in later seasons the Clark/Lex/Lana love triangle got annoying and cringy. I'm glad Kristin has tried to avoid them on other shows she has been in since. Even if she may have had some. Case in point season 2 of Beauty and the Beast. But, again, they really aren't ever needed.

Lois Lane shows up in season 4, but prior to that for years I would read passionate theories online about how chloey would somehow become Lois lane. Like she would take the name Lois lane to do her journalism for some reason. People were really into this theory, especially after Chloe mentions a cousin named Lois. People figured that is where she will get the name from.
In which nope turns out her cousin is literally Lois Lane. Still I think it would have been interesting if they did run with that theory.

I've always disliked love triangles. Occasionally, there's one that's done in a way that's fresh and different, but most of the time, it's just an excuse to drive a wedge between characters or add complications to a developing romance and create utterly hollow drama that's irrelevant to the themes of the larger story.
This is why I respect Jenna Ortega for requesting no triangle for season 2 of Wednesday.
What you hardly ever see in a TV show is people just being honest with each other and working it out. If I were running a CW show and they requested a love trangle, I'd give them a triad. No drama, just a committed relationship between three people who love each other.

Lana is only suppose to be Clark’s first love, that’s it, so why add in Chloe? I think what it came down to is, no one knew if this was a story where he ends up with Lois for the first three seasons… and then Lois is added and no one should’ve had a doubt that Lana and Clark would’ve just been a high school fling. Chloe was basically both Lois and Lana… but they added in Lois and Lana into the show, so her role should’ve definitely been more defined in the first two seasons.

I just really hated the way the writers made us wait 5 years for Clark and Lois to get together after she came on, and when they finally got together, it was because Lana was no longer on the show. For me this shows deep down she doesn't see him as a person. She almost views him as some sort of machine that saves people. Essentially what she was saying her is that Clark deserves to basically be in perpetual service to humanity. Chloe rightfully points out he needs time to rest, even if just mentally.
Which again showed that chloey understood Clark better than anyone. It feels like he got with Lois because that is just what is supposed to happen.

Not sure it would work as well if Clark and Pete were going after Lana. Possibly, but that type of show works better if two women like the superstud.
