Kia Spectra & Hyundai 2008 Power Steering & Alternator Squeaking Belt Easy Fix

- First and foremost, I'm not a mechanic, so if you follow my advice, please understand you are doing so at your own risk.
The Power Steering on many Kia & Hyundai models in the 2007-2010 range have a common problem - the Power Steering doesn't work properly and makes a lot of high pitched squeaking noises, especially when turning the wheel. When folks bring their vehicles to a mechanic, it is often mis-diagnosed as a Power Steering problem, (a costly replacement) only to find out the problem returns shortly after.
That's because the problem is not your Power Steering; rather, it's mis-adjusted (loosened) belts. I don't know why - maybe it's a design problem - but the Alternator and sometimes also the Power Steering belts become looser over time on these Kia's & Hyundai's. When the Alternator belt becomes looser, it fails to properly engage the Water Pump (near the Timing Belt), and then the Water Pump fails to properly engage the Power Steering. Hence, the stoppage of the Power Steering pulley, and the loss of power steering ability - especially when you first start your car or when you are driving and turning at low speeds.
So after a little research, I found out how to easily fix it, and I wanted to share it with all of you, in the hopes that my detailed video will show you exactly what you need to do. It's so easy, even my 18-year old (who is not a mechanic) can do it.
So I hope this helps you Kia & Hyundai owners out there, but if not, I tried.
Incidentally, please don't ask me any mechanical questions - I'm not a mechanic. I'm just a cheap DIY'er. I probably won't know the answer to your question. A week from now I'll forget I even posted this video, much less remember what I did to fix the car. So if you have a question, best bet is to call a real mechanic.
And thanks for watching. Please subscribe and thumbs up - because maybe someday I'll make something off of these videos and be able to upload more. I've got a bunch I've already filmed but no time to edit/upload. So if you subscribe it can really help me out. - Навчання та стиль
Thanks for this, after replacing the power steering belt and still having the same problem I was stumped. You just saved me a bunch of money.
Thank you so much sir!!! 👍🏻 I had the same problem, and every morning when I turned on my kia spectra 2009 it started screaming like crazy for like 30 seconds and when stepping on the gas it got even louder for like 5 seconds and then it went away. Making u turns was horrible and even making sharp turns. I had replaced the pump the belts and even the power steering fluid and on top of that I replaced the container for it because it had a leak and none was working. Came across your video, adjusted the belts more and wow I am so happy.
Man I definitely relate to fixing things as a father of teens. Thanks for the video... I needed a refresher before I go out in the cold and work on my bass ride 🔊🔊🔊. Going for the loudest little gold Kia ever 🤣🤣
Hey I'd just like to say thank you. I originally did the power steering belt, no luck. After doing what you said in the video, I also went ahead and did the alternator. No more noises! I was worried it was my release bearing or something. I'll replace both the belts in the summer. I can't thank you enough! 2010 Hyundai Accent Blue
I've got an 07 spectra and this is exactly to the T what I've been having an issue with and it fixed it perfectly! Thank you for the help and I'm glad I wasn't the only one having this problem! Saved me lots of money taking it to a mechanic for nothing.
I had this same promise and boy!! I’m so grateful that I came across your video! A lil bit of joking and getting right to the point thanks!
Enjoyable video, personable, yet precise instructions
My daughter has a 2007 Kia Spectra and this worked. Thanks for sharing.
Good dad teaching his son I never had a dad to teach me
Thank you. The instructions were so clear that a non-mechanically inclined person such as myself was able to fix the issue.
This video was extremely helpful in fixing my 2009 Sepctra with the same issue. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome fix, my car was squealing on start when I bought it he said his mechanics couldn’t figure out why and thought it was a bad power steering pump. Low and behold after 20 minutes of wrenching around my belts are solid and tight and the noise and power steering issues are gone. Thanks for putting this out there
Thank you so much... Myself (mom) and 2 of my daughters fixed my 2007 😊
Thank you sooooo much!! This video came to me at the perfect time!
The Spectra is such a great vehicle! So much of the maintenance work is surprisingly easy to do yourself, even if you're not mechanically inclined.
Thanks! This worked well. I realized that my tension bolt was not even toughing the bracket, so my belt didn't really have any tension at all. This saved me a lot of worry though, I appreciate it
Thank you dad 💪🏽😁
Thanks for that information brother. It's helping me solve the problem with my 82 yo Grandmother-in law.
Thanks man, it was so great i was able to fix that issue on my kia 2009 by myself thank to you, god bless you buddy😁
Good video guys. I am experiencing the same problem and this explains it very well.
Thank you so much. This video helped me too much . And saved me hundreds of dollars
Merry Xmas guys!!!!!
This is what happened to my daughters car and couldn’t figure it out thanks for the fix!!
My new bought tiburon has the same issue. I will taught the belts to see. Thanks.

Aey thank you bro this fixed my issue
🎉great video
Thanks. Same issue with my 2006 spectra
Thank you
Same issue going to adjust it tonight see if it fixes it...2005 Kia Spectre if it works i will post back a thank you!
You da man !!
Do you have a part number for the alternator belt? I’m having trouble finding a clear diagram.
Hi on the side of the alternator at 00:35 how do you get that cord casing off? Do you push down the middle or? I have everything else off but nervous to mess up that casing.
What size alternator belt do I need for a 2006 kia spectra
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. This solved my problem on my 09 kia spectra.
No haberlo sabido antes !!
I have question. You're saying the power steering isn't working right and you point out that the power steering gear is seizing up, yet you go to tighten the alternator belt first...why?
This is not me challenging you, I just am I having a similar problem and I am thinking I'm missing something important.
Thanks!
This works for 2007 Kia Rio also!
W dad
At about 5:38 your talking about 90°. I couldn't help but notice your fingers bent about 90° past the breaking point lol
so these are the tensioners for when i replace the belts too?
I think so.
Yes
Can you don't moving your cam too fast?
Starts but will not keep running
Wouldn’t only just tightening the power steering belt fix the problem completely without touching the alternator belt?
You can try. Let me know how it goes.
@@AxMan-777 I actually did it the exact way your video depicts, adjusting both alternator belt and power steering belt. It worked perfectly! Thank you so much for posting such a well detailed how-to!
