H/H match update (for episode 784 only): ... Today's action: Charles' "Honeymoon" won our champion her third game (although, to be fair, the entire panel had the exact same answer). Today's (first) audience match question: "________ Soda " (My thoughts: Baking, Club, Scotch and) The celebs: Richard (Club), Bert (Bicarbonate of), and Charles (Ice cream) The choice: Ice cream The answers: Scotch and, Baking, Ice Cream (Kudos to Charles for coming with the top answer in third position!) Our champion wisely went with Charles' suggestion instead of Richard's today. Does that mean that she might make a new choice for the head-to-head today? Or will she stick with Richard despite two misses so far? If I had to bet, I'd say she sticks with Richard... It's Richard again. Counting today, he has played all but four of the past 37 H/H questions. He's matched four of his ten most recent attempts (40% is actually a very decent success rate for the H/H), but he's missed the last four in a row (although the miss in 782 certainly wasn't his fault). Well, fingers crossed that our champion will finally score a win in the head-to-head! Today's (first) H/H question: "_______ Cherries" (My first thought was Bing. But then Maraschino comes to mind. I'm not sure if Bing cherries were a thing back in 1976, so I'll go with Maraschino.) Richard takes a minute to debate. He glances at Fannie and writes his answer. It seems to be a longish response. "I got a bunch of 'em this time!" she says, alluding to when she'd drawn a blank on the prior H/H questions. She's debating though. She says her first thought is something that Richard wouldn't have written, so she might go for her other choice. After a bit of hesitation, she says "Bing" cherries and the audience heartily applauds... Well, I guess that answers my questions about whether Bing cherries were a thing in 1976. Oh well, I already gave my answer and I can't change it now. I can't wait to see what Richard wrote! Richard wrote "Marachino" [sic]. No match this time. ~~~ A quick game results in our champion's defeat. After three victories, she goes home with $1,800. A new champion stands at the ready. Will she have better luck at the head-to-head? Today's (second) audience match question: "Pen ________ " (My thoughts: Knife, and pencil, pal) The celebs: Fannie (Pal), Charles (Knife), and Richard (and pencil) The choice: Pal The answers: (-)Manship, And Pencil, Pal Our new champion chose Fannie's suggestion and won $500. But will she choose Fannie for the head-to-head? I've seen many contestants choose Richard for the third suggestion and still pick him for the H/H (even if his answer didn't appear on the audience match board). This contestant doesn't seem like a Team Richard member to me though. Let's see... She seems to waver... She chooses Fannie! This is her second play this week (she matched on "Monday" - episode 781). Whatever the result, this will once again break the tie with Betty White (both currently have an incredible 50% accuracy score in the head-to-head). This is Fannie's 25th time playing the H/H. Today's (second) H/H question: "Sky _______" (My first thought is that this is easier than today's first question. I'll say sky blue. I guess skylark would be my second choice. Then there's sky dive/diving.) Fannie's got her "thinking" glasses on and writes her answer pretty quickly. She's looking over at Richard, but doesn't hesitate filing her card. Ding. Our champion says "Dive." Wow. I didn't think that was common or generic enough, so I discarded that answer. The audience offers only a smattering of polite applause. It doesn't seem likely, but it's certainly not impossible! Anyway, it's up to Fannie now. Fannie wrote "Cap." No match this time. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) H/H match update (for episode 785) and End-of-Week Recap: ... ~~~Today's action: (A lot of fun and antics today, not a lot of play, and no Super-Match.) Gene Rayburn was a GREAT host! It ain't EZ folks!!! Want proof? Alec Baldwin tried to revive this show a few seasons ago and it BOMBED miserably! Considering current events in the news do you wonder WHY?

"well that's good, we need people to do that rotten job".... Lol! Gene was one of a kind. Pissed off a whole section of the country with one sentence. I'm loving it.
Coal miner's would have taken that as a compliment. at the start of the no. 786 or 787 show Gene is standing beside Mike and explains how tough a job it is and this is the compliment. I think he did that to clear up any misunderstanding.
Gene was the best-dressed game show host. It worked well because the set was rather flimsy and they were always having technical issues. The Dude was a rock. So congenial and quick with the improv.
He was the absolute best. I mean, I wasn't alive when this show aired and I didn't even know of him until after he passed, but I've binge watched match game and have just fallen in love with Gene Rayburn
@@laurao6070 I was a kid when the show aired. My mom loved Gene Rayburn and used to tell me she was a fan going back to the early 1950s with Rayburn and Finch since she grew up in NY.
At times he looked like a used car salesman. In the earlier years some his outfits were pretty outrageous. In the later years after CBS took over furnishing the suits he looked much nicer.
@@ts.elliot5870 "While the 60s was the decade of the boyish skinny suit with some unique features in collar and jacket shape, the 1970s was the decade to play with every cut, color, and fabric imaginable. It was known as the “peacock” look because men over-dressed themselves in flashy suits, shirts, and footwear, often outstyling women’s wear at the time. This showy new look began in the early 1960s, but took until the end of the decade to find it’s home in the 1970s." Used car salesmen might wear a loud jacket, but they didn't wear vests.
The show would not be the same without Brett. She was a marvelous foil for Charles and Richard, and sometimes she was just wickedly funny. Sometimes she even got the answers right! But OMG--"Baseball is different from football, isn't it? Is it like basketball?" Such a classic Brett moment, and not in a good way.
@@sdlively27 Yes, but in this case she is being deliberately obtuse. She knew perfectly well what baseball and football were. I think the words were sometimes slow to penetrate her brain and she spoke impulsively before she gave a thought a chance to sink in. Classic ADHD, so she deserves some compassion, but again, she was just being obtuse about it in this instance. I still think the show is better with her (and Gene Richard and Charles. Once Richard was gone, it was all downhill.)
She was the original wicked drag queen personna. Catty, funny, dense and she occasionally matched. But when Brett was the butt of the BLANK or when Fannie said she was so embarrassed to take Brett shopping in the preteen section for a training bra the audience roared.
I ❤Anitra Ford when she was on Match game! What a joy it was when I met her in Santa Barbara, California. I wish someone would cast her in today's movies. She was SOOOOOO UNDERATED as an actress. She not only was SEXY Beautiful...she could Act beyond the Best in my opinion. Directors; Producers...please find her & cast her in one of your FINE movies!
i get the impression that some of the contestants give deliberately nonsensical answers - almost as if they're looking to throw the game on purpose.....
Patti Deutch (who left us just this last July), Joyce Bulifant (who will be *80* in December) and Fannie Flagg (birth name: Patricia Neal, now 73!) give some of the wackiest answers..being in that 6th seat is no coincidence.....
@@dannyhill8797 yes, sometimes the contestants give such a bad answer that it seems staged. And sometimes they give something totally off the wall or obscure, and still get matches. That also makes it seem staged.
It is a horrible job. Let's be honest it's unsafe and many coal miners are either disabled or get black lung. Gene was speaking truth to power. Grow up folks.
Brett was cool when she said, "I would think that would turn you into a thief, not a cheap person" in response to the contestant's answer of "silverware."
@@ts.elliot5870I think Gene was being honest but I think his main goal was to go for a laugh, which he got. The guy had said just a minute before he'd move to California but there weren't any coal fields. Gene said there must be something else he could do. And Mike says he likes coal mining. That's a setup for a joke.
17:29 "happier, cheerie-er and did Brett say "gay"? Followed by Bert saying, "Leave him alone". I was 12 years old back then and did not know what gay was. When it was explained to me, I still didn't understand. To this day, I still don't get it.
That was the first time I've seen CNR give Brett Somers a side eye look....I CANNOT even remember what she said BUT it was KINDA CRUEL AND VERY UNNECESSARY!!! RIP to them both. I'm just stating my opinion. No disrespect intended.
They were BEST friends and loved each other dearly. In an article Fannie Flagg has said about Brett and Charles "it was NEVER mean or hurtful" maybe look that article up sometime it's on Google it was all playful banter. This might be you're opinion but it's wrong. Long after Match Game ended Brett has said she loved Charles and Charles loved Brett.
Brett didnt care who she used or hurt to get a laugh. all she cared about was HERSELF.....But years later everybody can see right through her....... I cant belive how many comments about how rude and annoying she gets.
A complete worldview of the way it was when America still had fun and no one gave a shit. BTW Richard winked at the girl when he got serious to win her some money so he coult get a kiss and a hug and maybe something later as she was Farrah Fawcett hot. Nice move, Richard. He's a cad and so am I.
@@eyehatefarcebook11 Bert Convy was also in a 1979 episode of 'Charlie's Angels' as well as The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Movie, and The Cannonball Run (1981) among others.
Here’s the results for this week: Fannie won by giving away the most money at a total of $6,000. Richard came in second giving away $1,000 and Charles gave away $500 in an audience match. There was a four person tie with Bert, Charles, Richard, and Fannie each matching 10 times. Brett and Patth both matched 9 times.
That's OK. But when you think about it would they put their career on the line for a person the didn't know and when they got zero reward for doing so. There were game so scandals before this show and there have been scandals since but no over ever accused MG of anything in real time.
Didya notice that after a while the producers of "MATCH GAME" figured out that THIS was definitely a "FEMALE" oriented game show. No? Look at the contestants folks! Ratio of FEMALES to MALES is WAAAAY outta whack! Pretty simple really? FEMALES are better at "WORDS"! MALES are generally better at "NUMBERS"! Yes, it's a male chauvinist perspective but sorry ladies that's the generation I was born into. The pre- "WOMEN'S LIBERATION" era.
What a great ensemble of stars that made this show work, 50 years later and we're still enjoying.
"Scotch 'n' Soda" was my dad' CB handle back in the 70s and 80s. Touched my heart to see his pseudonym on Match Game.
Charles Nelson Riley was so iconic that even if you did a bad impression of him they would still know who you were doing.
I watched these shows as a toddler and the image of him in those massive glasses always stuck with me. He was quite a character.
Except for Gary, he did a terrible impression of CNR
CNR's distinctive snicker. Often imitated, never duplicated. He was a true original.
I really appreciate your work on this channel.
H/H match update (for episode 784 only):
...
Today's action:
Charles' "Honeymoon" won our champion her third game (although, to be fair, the entire panel had the exact same answer).
Today's (first) audience match question: "________ Soda " (My thoughts: Baking, Club, Scotch and)
The celebs: Richard (Club), Bert (Bicarbonate of), and Charles (Ice cream)
The choice: Ice cream

"well that's good, we need people to do that rotten job".... Lol! Gene was one of a kind. Pissed off a whole section of the country with one sentence. I'm loving it.
Back then no one was offended by the truth. Working in the coal mines is a rotten job tempered by the pay.
@@austinteutsch Right! Too many people today are too sensitive.
Coal miner's would have taken that as a compliment. at the start of the no. 786 or 787 show Gene is standing beside Mike and explains how tough a job it is and this is the compliment. I think he did that to clear up any misunderstanding.
@@tmayorca8770 I agree.
Richards suit is very nice. And so is he.
He hadn't dressed up in a while.
Yes. I have said it from the start. Gene was a great snappy dresser.
Patti Duke was an awkward looking teenager, but man she was a smoldering smoke show here at age 30.
Love Bert Convy!!
I have always thought Fannie. Was sooo pretty.
Not
GENE: "Would you cough for us?" LOL!
Uncouth the cough comment
I ❤Anitra Ford when she was on Match game! What a joy it was when I met her in Santa Barbara, California. I wish someone would cast her in today's movies. She was SOOOOOO UNDERATED as an actress. She not only was SEXY Beautiful...she could Act beyond the Best in my opinion. Directors; Producers...please find her & cast her in one of your FINE movies!
Fanny and Linda bump chests
bouncy bouncy - wouldnt you have loved to be between them
That was wonderful.
You mean their chests have bumps?
(Blanking) all these episodes very much !
Sometimes I think the celebrities deliberately give bad answers. The obvious answer to the Shakespeare question was "nude".
But I thought of LOO and then NUDE. They were both good answers.
Especially Brett, gawd.
i get the impression that some of the contestants give deliberately nonsensical answers - almost as if they're looking to throw the game on purpose.....
Linda the contestant is gorgeous! Wow
She's LOVELY! She looks like an island girl but she talks like one of us!
@@GizmoFromPizmo I agree.
@Ventura Yes, she is!

Gene to the coal miner: "well somebody's gotta do that rotten job"
Rather rude. Especially when the guy just said he loved his job.
I thought that too. Seemed out of character for Gene
Let's me honest...A lot of rude an inappropriate things were said and done at that time.
Gene grew up in the exact same area so he knew what he meant by it.
It is a horrible job. Let's be honest it's unsafe and many coal miners are either disabled or get black lung. Gene was speaking truth to power. Grow up folks.
I like Richard Fanny & Charles
What about Gene?
Well, at least you got the last 2 right

Brett was cool when she said, "I would think that would turn you into a thief, not a cheap person" in response to the contestant's answer of "silverware."
Exactly
Fanny loved the hugs from the ladies.
She certainly did!!!!
@Joe Mackojc She is a Lesbian.
@Joe Mackojc I definitely wouldn't either!
Love Charles hat.
🍒🍒Marchiano Cherries was my answer too! I matched Richard all the time!🍒 🍒

OMG LOL Gene! “Somebody’s gotta do that rotten job!” while the guy is right there, disparaging his profession. LOL
Gene’s an egotistical maniac who really enjoys embarrassing people.
It is a horrible industry/profession. Gene was being honest.

I’m blanking on who they’re all impersonating between 28:24 to 28:43. I know when someone says it, I’ll have to kick myself for forgetting.
Bogart.
I never took it as serious as they were great friends.
I think so too
A complete worldview of the way it was when America still had fun and no one gave a shit. BTW Richard winked at the girl when he got serious to win her some money so he coult get a kiss and a hug and maybe something later as she was Farrah Fawcett hot. Nice move, Richard. He's a cad and so am I.

Gene must be 'on' something today!! :)
Tripping.
Here’s the results for this week:
Fannie won by giving away the most money at a total of $6,000.
Richard came in second giving away $1,000 and Charles gave away $500 in an audience match.
There was a four person tie with Bert, Charles, Richard, and Fannie each matching 10 times. Brett and Patth both matched 9 times.
I think the Stars cheated at times filling out more than one card with more than one answer and placed them next to one another. I really do.
That's OK. But when you think about it would they put their career on the line for a person the didn't know and when they got zero reward for doing so. There were game so scandals before this show and there have been scandals since but no over ever accused MG of anything in real time.

It was all the rave for men around America.
He admired Tom Jones?
Hair plugs for men.
He had it all thru the 70s and 80s. Obviously liked it. I do too. Have never seen him without it tbh.

Why would the writers create jokes that were homophobic, when Charles was openly gay? And don't tell me, because it was the 70s.

They taped all 5 showed on a weekend. They did two shoes, broke for lunch and then ate drank and viola. Then the liquid couragel liked in.
To each his or her own, I guess.
Richard and Gene don't drink, they have said it a lot.

it is Patty Duke Astin …. Not Austen
It's Austin, not Austen

MALES are generally better at "NUMBERS"!
