  • EP 8- Cabin Build Part 2.. Finishing the walls I move onto cutting out the door and putting in some roof beams. Winter arrives and brings with it some bad weather. Dealing with cold hands all day is starting to wear me down. Having to rely mainly on fish to sustain myself while I finish building the cabin. Hunting and trapping is on hold until I can get moved in.
    Putting all my survival, bushcraft, primitive hunting fishing and building skills to the ultimate test of survival. Being dropped in northern Labrador without food and only 10 survival items, along with a ton of batteries, solar panels and camera gear to film a small Hollywood production.
    Tune in every Sunday for a new episode right here on Skote Outdoors.

      Thanks Joseph, I also love this little cabin. It does give it a entirely different look with the bark. However I wouldn't suggest it since this will make the logs rot faster

    Love the accent and the phrases. Both of my parents are from Deerlake and most of my cousins too. I have always loved the Newfoundland and Labrador accent. I was conceived in Stephenville but was actually born in Halifax Nova Scotia and have been here for 57 years. I was in Bonavista last March....just ahead of the Spring icebergs sadly. But the trip across the island was nothing short of beautiful as always. Where are you in Labrador? Looks gorgeous.

    People usually debark trees when building a log cabin. What's your experience with undebarked logs? I'm guessing it won't last as long?

    • @skoteoutdoors
      @skoteoutdoors  2 роки тому

      leaving the bark on is a major no no, the only reason I left it on is because it was a survival camp and I didn't want to waste the extra calories on peeling the logs. leaving the bark on will not only shorten the cabins lifespan by making the logs rot.. but it will always be a pain for cleaning inside since the dried bark will keep falling down a little at a time.

    Im from dawson and I'm first nations, what they did to you was bullshit. But I understand why, squatting is getting bad here. What you should do is just ask someone in town who is FN to buy it from you so you dont have to take it down. Then rent it for $1 a month from said person. Good luck my man

  • @Pali65
    @Pali65 2 роки тому +1

    Just a question - wouldn't be better to remove the bark? In my experience the bugs will attack the log and it will deteriorate faster. This is at least usual here in middle Europe (I am involved in renovating and building log cabins for hikers so this is a standard practice here). But maybe we have just more moderate climate and thus higher risk for wood.

    • @skoteoutdoors
      @skoteoutdoors  2 роки тому +1

      You are totally right Pavol, the bark should always come off. The reason I left it on is that calories and body fat are very valuable out here and I didn't want to waste any of it peeling logs for a survival cabin. In a real life long term survival I imagined that leaving the bark on is justified even tho the cabin will rot much much faster

    • @Pali65
      @Pali65 2 роки тому

      @@skoteoutdoors thank you, I was originally wondering if you are in much colder climate than ours so maybe the process of decay is not that fast. But I get it that you need to economise on calories output.

U need a chainsaw and if ur just trying to make something simple to get u out of the elements u can get slabs from a mill which is the extra wood they trim when they make 2x4's etc. And they weigh a lot less too. Those big logs are really hard to move and get into position ,😁

      Gransfors Bruk is what I brought for this trip. Full length felling axe. This thing was literally a full bush saber, really kept its edge also.
      Here's a link to the exact axe I used.

      Yeah they are beautiful. Expensive, but they also perform. I have their large splitting axe and their splitting maul to split the majority of the 8 cords of birch I burn each year. Fabulous tools. I speculated that was the axe you had. Awesome.

    I'm so sorry you have to tear it down. It's been my dream for years too. It ain't right what they do. We all know no crime was committed.
