I always love watching you work. Also I have a couple Gameboys that won't turn on and I just never felt like working on them when I have so many others to work on. Now that I'm shut in the house I think I'll get to them! Thanks for reminding me!! 🤣🤣
Just bought GBC that did not power on. Based on pics, I thought it might be a simple replacement of the battery terminals (non-motherboard side). Turns out I can't get continuity from any of the fuses in the area that you are working on. The ones close to the game slot are fine (C10 and C47). All others not. One actually looked like a it burst as it was charred and disintegrated upon cleaning the board. Not sure if it will be worth replacing all fuses at this point, but this did give me some hope and guidance on what I might need to do if I decide to go down that path. Thanks for this video. It was very helpful.
great tutorial, a question on the page you have a link to buy them, the problem is that they do not reach my country, by chance you will have the values to look for a similar one in an electronic components store near where I live. Thanks
Sure, you want to look for a 1A 50V fuse like these: console5.com/store/fuse-1a-50v-surface-mount-smd-sony-psone.html You can also check Mouser, Arrow, LCSC, or even eBay or AliExpress :)
Hey! Great video! I Have a question: I plugged a worm light into my game boy color, and it shut down. I guess the worm light short circuited the gbc. But it totally stopped working. So do you think it’s the fuse that popped?
Hi, love your vídeos, great content. I was wondering if you could help me with something. The led on my gameboy colour won't light up. I haven't made any mods to it and the led is good. It lights up when i check for continuaty. Pluged with charger or battery it won't light up. Do you know why that hapoens? Thanks and keep up the good work
@@geekshed1674 Hmm, without seeing it it's hard to say. Could be a broken trace leading to the power LED. You could try to find that, or you could just wire up the LED someplace else.
I have a gbc that will power on when plugged in but not with batteries, any ideas? The battery contacts are pristine and ive also reflowed the contact's to the board. Thanks for helping in advance 😊
Got a cheap partially working gbc. Thought I could give it a try to fix it. Turns out the pads/contacts on the A button were already ripped. Any idea how to fix it? Or is it a goner? Thank you.
When I say DC I mean the DC part coming for the plug as I know they have for example different fuses depending if energy coming from batteries or wire.
Hi. I own a GBC and is not working with the DC power but it works with batteries. I have modded it with a new light screen (i don't know if that affects it) May i have the same problem as you, in this video of yours? Fuse or capacitor?
If a fuse was blown, the entire system wouldn't turn on, so that's not it. It could be a faulty or corroded/dirty DC jack, or something along the voltage rail it outputs could be damaged. Best way is to plug in an AC/DC adapter and check the voltage with a multimeter. Or you can try giving it a thorough clean with some alcohol. A backlit screen shouldn't affect the jack from powering on the system.
@@esotericsean i did it. It was the fuse of the dc power, if i remember right the f2 fuse. I removed it and i connected a wire to the two sides and is working great!
@@esotericsean yes but in the end i'll have to install a new fuse because if my dc adapter has a short circuit, it will burn something else from the motherboard. So this is something temporary, the fuse is the right solution.
What does it show when you touch the multimeter leads together while in continuity mode? Whatever that shows, that means it has continuity. If it shows the same thing when you test across a fuse, then it also has continuity. If it shows something different then the fuse has popped.
So I have looked online for a power switch for gameboy color becuase mine broke and I know how to connect c and 3 and have it on all the time. Do you know of a place where I can get a replacement switch for gameboy color?
I don’t think they make them. You could find a broken GBC motherboard and take it from there. Or... if you’re really desperate just solder your power switch so it’s always on and “turn it off” by removing the batteries?
To make the process easier, you could also solder the replacement fuse on top of the blown one, piggyback style. That would make things way easier. No removing the old fuse and you just have to put a bit of extra solder on top of the old fuse, then solder the new one on on top of it. Easier to reach. Beware, those fuses are super tiny!
@@brandonlong260 i don't remember how they're called, but i used the same ds lite fuse for the gbc to repair it. At least, a fuse under the battery compartment
Awesome! A search for GBC fuse will show you a few different options. Console5, Labfifteenco, I think RetroGameRepairShop too. Also AliExpress and eBay.
@@esotericsean Yep, I'm checking out with retrogamerepair. I really appreciate the video! I scratched my head for two days undoing and redoing my latest mod (retro pixel 2) but sure enough, I threw the multi on it and the fuse is dead.

Another video of yours saves the day again!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice work!
yay! it was the fuse thank you sooo much! I temporarily bridged mine with a staple
Nice i actually fixed my gbc just now 😁😁
Hello I have a Gameboy color that D2 diode blew. What kind of diode I can use to replace it or is there other way around it? Thank you.
Awesome video sean,as usual..
Will the AC adapter work on the gameboy if the f1 fuse is removed?

How much is that multimeter?
Probably a few dollars. You can get those kinds that are not autoranging for very cheap; $10 at max.
I think I got it free at Harbor Freight :)

Should be 1A 50V, higher voltage is fine
What if it powers on but won't stay on for longer the a few seconds can this help that?

Everything else on the Game Boy works just fine? What is the voltage across the LED when the system powers on?

Couldn't you just flux and heatgun that chip to resuscitate it or is it in the same family as a mosfet and it will just break again in a month or so?
You know, I’m actually not sure. Fuses are so inexpensive though that it seems to make sense just to use a new one. But I’ll look into that!

Short points 2 and 3 on the DC Jack and power with batteries. Your dc jack may be bad.
