I've replace the thermostat on the heater, fixed the riding lawn mower, etc, etc. I wouldn't have the knowledge to even try this stuff without youtube. DIY saves me so much money.
Thank you for this video this is exactly what I was looking for. All the other videos were how to hang a pre-hunged door which is not always what someone wants to do.
Don't forget the scribing spur on the Butt Marker. This sets the depth of the mortise for the hinge. And don't sharpen the butt marker from the inside. Sharpen from the exterior side of the marker ONLY. Use pencil to mark on the door with an 'H" for hinge side and "I' or 'E" for Interior and/or Exterior.
2 3/4 backset is a good choice for knob clearance if thick wood stop exists or nail on weather stripping might hit your knuckles whilst turning the knob.
Bending the hinge with a crescent wrench is freaking genius! I've been struggling with that issue and this video has saved me from a real headache. Thank you!
Doors also have a tapered edge on the strike side and a flat edge on the hinge side. It’s meant so the door fits like a wedge into the frame. That way on the swing closed the short edge clears the frame and the higher back edge makes a good contact seal. If you put it on backwards the higher edge will rub the frame every time and sometimes the door doesn’t fit depending on how tight the frame is. If the door is wide and ever needs to be ripped down a tad you always cut on the flat hinge edge, so as not to lose the factory taper. Plus the hinge edge is facing inward thus more hidden from sight to hide the ugly fresh cut.
Yes you are correct with the bevel on the front edge of the door. It seems now that the space around the door is wider and doesn't need the front edge beveled. If you need the door trimmed always trim it on the hinge side, so the door lockset won't be compromised.
Sounds good in theory. The problem is the taper would be facing the wrong way for one opening direction, meaning you'd have to specify right or left hand opening when you ordered an undrilled/unmortised slab. No one does that. You just take a plane and put a taper on it, if needed, which it won't be if you build the jamb properly.

Great great video, this has enabled me to do the interior doors myself! One tip we used from another person's video was to set to paint stirring sticks on top of the door to give the perfect amount of space at the top before marking the existing hinges.. As for the striker plate area, we tried to notch that out so it would be flush.. that was awful! No easy way notch that out with a chisel and hammer.. took forever. worst part of the whole job.. the parts you showed us made it easy! Do you have a video on putting in the striker plate and notching out?
You never chisel out both mortises at the same time. That's why he had to use a hammer to get the lower hinge to freely engage (4:27 or so). Do the top one first. Hang the door on that hinge and THEN mark the edges of the lower hinge. Then cut. Good carpenters use finesse, not brute force.
Great video! Im about to try and hang 5 new basement doors soon! The old doors were thrown away so it made me a bit nervous taking the job since i cannot use them as a template. I feel good about doing it now after your video! Thank you!
The first screw of the hinge was overdriven, tearing out about half the wood holding the screw. The last screw in the first hinge he installed "in soft wood, so you don't have to predrill" split the wood, making that screw's holding power about zero after a few good slams. And the center screw was crooked, which can bind the hinge if it protrudes enough, eventually ruining that screw's holding power as well. And people wonder why their doors sag and rub the jambs... Well there's the reason folks. Expert carpenter. lol
Also, you should try to adjust the hinges before bending them. Maybe I missed it but I didn’t see you measure how deep your hinges were in the jamb. That probably would have prevented the issue in the first place.
This video was excellent, exactly what I needed. I ran into a couple small snags along the way, but I got them sorted out. Closing the door and having it latch after I finished felt really good!
Not good. Screws sitting proud of the hinge. And the use of your "Butt Marking" tool has meant you have a different shaped rebate to the hinge you are using - meaning filling is required. The visible edge of the rebated hinge recess is also very rough and shaped like a dogs back leg. Overall I think this is quite a rough job.

Dave, loved the video. I am a DIYer and have I learned lots from experts like yourself so that I can do things myself correctly at my home.... very few craftsmen left in construction these days. I have a question that I have had some difficulty finding the answer to and I know you know the answer and I hope you are willing to share. When I shut a door, how much of a gap should there be between the door and the doorstop? Normally I would look at one of the doors in our home but in our reconstruction, the interior doors were all changed and now that I know a bit about doors, I can what a crappy job the installers did. Many of the doors do not shut snugly and the reveals are not great. Most people won't notice these things but I do now. In any event, I sure would appreciate your suggestion.
Question… door hinges have 2 sides. One has 3 arms and the other has 2 arms for the pins to go into…. Does it matter which side of the hinge goes on the door? I always assumed the 1/2 of the hinge with the 3 arms went on the frame as it supports the weight of the door
Why on earth would you use a rectangular butt marker for rounded hinges. Blew out the back of the door around the hinge and the screws were set at an angle. Pretty poor.
Thanks Dave good clear video, I was struggling to hang a door the hinges were all wrong going to get it done now...I have to get me one of those hole punch do hickey Stanley things would be great for my fumble fingers since having a stroke...cheers for the help.
Thabk you! And thank you to some of those very moving comments when people that really needed to learn how to do this, especially the younger child with a stepdad that broke the door and left and the mother. That's freaking out. You'll be okay, many of us had to go through that. I finally answers in the Bible and my walk with Christ. Sound. Your post very moving, and many others as well
My father, also "Old School", taught me to put the 3 lobe part of the hinge on the door and the 2 lobe part of the hinge on the jamb. That allows you to pin the hinge parts together using your thumb (4:09). Can't do that when the 2 lobe hinge part is on the door.
So do you get a better result if you mark the hinges your way, or if you take both doors off, stack them together and copy the hinge location from the old to new? Seems like your method works better. But I havent done it yet myself. Will be trying soon though
I think either way works well can never go wrong with tracing/scribing/copying in my opinion though. I feel like if you already have a door that you can use as a template that hangs nice as is it would work well
@@caydenthompson1878 I can't believe it but I hung the door. I used a combo of your method and then measuring again. it wasn't perfect but it hangs, closes & all the hinges lined up with minimal adjustments. I used the old hinges for ease. I thing the bigger problem was getting the setback correct which I had to measure for. Thanks again for the tips.
You'd need to get something like a couple of paint can "stir sticks" and put on top of the door (left and right) to provide a gap at the top, and then use some shims at the bottom (left and right) to lift the door up and off the ground a bit, and then mark your hinges... hope that helps.
Not sure what's worse. Spending hours with a wood planer trying to "square" the door so it'll fit. Or finding this video and realizing there was an EASIER way all along 😩
When you first put the door in, you use a pencil to mark the hinges to the door. But you need a gap on the bottom of the door and the floor before you transfer the mark. How did you have a gap.

Pretty poor.
absolutely love the "old school" way he cuts out the hinge pockets!
Sound. Your post very moving, and many others as well
Why did you square the corners for a rounded hinge plate?..this was painful to watch.
Do you put something under door to lift a bit when measuring at first ?
Yes I lift the door with the aid of a flat bar. I lift it just enough to make the proper space at the top of the door.
This video is amazing like gold thank you so much! 😊
I don't think this Stanley hing even comes apart.
Dave your the man
Truly appreciate what you’ve given to the world
Old school skills. Well done Dave. You can always tell a professional. He always wears a tool belt or apron even on a small job. hehe
+WoodRodent Yes, I wasn't wearing my knee pads, though. Funny how the old skills never seem to get lost in the shuffle of modern methods.
DaveOsborneDotCom you make it to Big of it3/32
Which hinge goes to the door, the 2 part or 3 part (like letter "E"), I have seen so many variation it is so confusing.
Thanks again for the tips.
old school for the win. saving this video for my next project!
cheers!
I might have missed the part when you first put the new door into the opening to line up the hinges , did you have to have it slightly off the floor?
You'd need to get something like a couple of paint can "stir sticks" and put on top of the door (left and right) to provide a gap at the top, and then use some shims at the bottom (left and right) to lift the door up and off the ground a bit, and then mark your hinges... hope that helps.
Not sure what's worse. Spending hours with a wood planer trying to "square" the door so it'll fit. Or finding this video and realizing there was an EASIER way all along 😩
Square corner for a round hing, very poor quality 👎😕
Everyone's gonna pretend he didn't cut sharp corners for rounded hinges... sloppy work
When you first put the door in, you use a pencil to mark the hinges to the door. But you need a gap on the bottom of the door and the floor before you transfer the mark. How did you have a gap.
Yes I lift the door with the aid of a flat bar. I lift it just enough to make the proper space at the top of the door.
I agree, I only know computers and this stuff I am so crippled with. I love UA-cam to see skilled craftsman and all the “tips and tricks” to make adjustments when doing things like hanging doors.
Absolutely amazing! Thank you! I could not figure out if I was supposed to put the hinges on the door first or the doorway first. Apparently it’s both! I am hanging it by myself and it was so much easier to pop the pin out and line it up. Never would have thought of that. Now my door is hung nice and it was easy! Thank you!
Any relation to Super Dave Osborne? Gerat video.
How is it not touching the floor? Should I use shims?
Ok but how do you install the hinges in the doorway??
Idk why but watching this was so satisfying. Like carpenter asmr lol.
