Ibanez Prestige RG with DiMarzio Pickups (at Replay Guitar Exchange)

- For years I have been on the fence about changing out the stock V7, V8, and S1 pickups in my Ibanez Prestige RG1570 guitar. I love those pickups but just felt something was missing so I wanted to try different pickups.
Finally, I decided to take my guitar up to Replay Guitar Exchange and get them switched out with a set of DiMarzio pickups:
Neck: Air Norton
Middle: HS-2
Bridge: Tone Zone

You'll hear what these pickups sound like in the video, and I give you a taste of each pickup configuration and you'll hear both clean and metal tones!
I also share my HONEST thoughts on these pickups at the end of the video, and I'd love to know your thoughts as well!
Keep it Metal,

I stumbled upon your channel and im glad I did man..you shown me alot...I recently just picked up the guitar about a year and a half ago after my brother passed who was an amazing metal guitar player...iv gotten decent and started writing n recording my own shit and watching how you do it and your goals and writing them down and just planning well has helped me and inspired me so I thank you for that
Really sorry to hear about your brother, and glad my channel has helped!
Thank you for having a clean tone demonstration
Yes, most people leave out the cleans!! But I love the cleans on this guitar (and I actually prefer the stock pickups for that)
Amazing tone Jason!!!! Great ;)
🤘
Cool vid bro🤘 guitar sounds freekin awesome!
Thank you 🤘
Sounds great man🤘
Thank you. I do miss the old pickups though...so I'm not sure how long I'll keep these in! lol
Air Norton and Tone Zone in a basswood body is the perfect receipe.Mixed with the Prestige quality....pure gold.Very nice played.
Dude, funny thing is I went back to the stock pickups...here's why: ua-cam.com/video/DRBU7IJWTqM/v-deo.html

Cool vid. The side by side will be interesting to see!
I hope to have that video out in the next couple of days!
Oh my lordy that sounds fan freaking tastic
Dude, I actually went back to the stock pickups here: ua-cam.com/video/DRBU7IJWTqM/v-deo.html
@Jason Stallworth Hell yeah. I'll check it out. My ears aren't calibrated yet. I'm a newbie that collected a few MIJ guitars about 4 years ago. I started practicing then but stopped. I finally got my head out of my butt and started again. I appreciate your content. Thank you. I have Fenders but really want to check out an old Ibanez
Nice gear!! Sounds awesome…I bought my Strymon Zelzah multi functional stereo Phase at Tampa Guitar Replay.. nice store.
Awesome man...love going to Replay! I need to get up there again soon
Sounds great. This is the sound im looking for on my own guitars always. I had a RG550 not too long ago and the stock pickups just sounded muddy and dull. Changed them aswell and it´s a completely different guitar.
Yeah, I fought changing them out for a long time! But there are certain things I miss about the V7 and V8 now
Love the Tone Zone and Air Norton combo.
Man, I'm not in love with it so far. I'm going to play around with these some more but right now, I'm actually missing and preferring the stock pickups, which I know sounds crazy
@@jasonstallworth That's fair. The Tone Zone is very bass-heavy, and the Air Norton definitely has it's own character as a neck pickup.
@@jasonstallworth I‘ve heard a few people swap out for this combo on various guitars. I‘m not going to lie, they‘re not my thing and I fail to understand the fuss. I think the ˋflabby´ allegation hits the mark, though I‘m not sure what guitars they originally got their success with. I guess they have their place with the right woods/ hardware.
@@jasonstallworth ... I don‘t know if these are metal enough for you, but this guy‘s replaced his stock pups on his RG with Suhr pickups and they sound like this:
ua-cam.com/video/QixL6_WgfHQ/v-deo.html
High demand for them means of course Dimarzio tone zone/ air Norton are easy to sell when they don‘t work
One of my favorite combos of all time. I also use the Norton/Air Norton combo on my PRS and Yamaha Revstar. They sound killer.
Hi Jason i was waiting for this video, because i have an rg 517(570) 1998 and a 2019 white genesis,,, my favorite bridge pickup is the super distortion it does everything i like , i need another one, and i had high expectations for the tone zone, i like pinch harmonics and i did not feel that they were popping up that much in your video.thanks
Yeah I noticed the same...the Tone Zone is not picking those up at all...in fact, the stock V8 sounded better! I'm actually considering switching them back to the originals
Did same.someone said dimarzios were better. Was diassappointed. Put these back in. I'm happy now
Man, I ended up putting the stock pickups back in and here’s what happened: ua-cam.com/video/DRBU7IJWTqM/v-deo.html
Sounds fantastic!
I put a Tone Zone in the neck position, a Fender Texas Special bridge pickup in the middle position, and a Super Distortion in the bridge position with a single 500k vol pot, with a “tone” knob on it. 😏 It SCREAMS! Nice choice on your pickups. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Oh, the guitar is an Ibanez RG550/PGM look alike partscaster with a solid swamp ash body....
Nice dude! Although I'm missing the stock pickups!
Hopefully changing my Infinity R pickups in my Ibanez out for a set of EMG 81x and 60x. I think its great with a guitar that you can change the pickups out and not have to buy a whole new one every time you want a different tone! Love your videos! Keep it Metal!
That's a great point and yes, much less expensive!!
I have a 7-string Ibanez RG1527 (Japan) for more than a decade. I used Duncan Blackouts but I've replaced them with Dimarzio Evolution 7. It sounds fantastic. Ibanez make great guitars and Dimarzio are the best passive pickups (although I use Fishman's in another guitar). You really can't go wrong with a combination like that!
That sounds like a solid combo!
I have an rg1570 also and several years ago I replaced the stock pickups with Dimarzio Breeds. Oddly enough, I actually preferred the sound I got from the stock pickups to what I was hearing from the Breeds. I’m thinking about replacing the Breeds in my guitar with a set of Dimarzio 36th anniversary pafs. I play a lot of classic rock, blues and a little jazz and r&b so I don’t really need a high output pickup. I enjoy watching your videos, awesome playing!
Thank you. I'm actually considering switching these back to the stock pickups! Getting ready to film the 2nd part of this video today that will have a side-by-side comparison of the stock and these pickups (should be released by noon today!)
@@jasonstallworth You’re welcome..I’ll be sure to check it out!
I owned one of these about 20 years ago.. Pure Gold in color but it just was a RG 570 not a 1570.. It was one of the 500 gold ones made in that year. Same pickups too the v7 v8
I'm sure the RG570 is awesome as well! I love the RG series in general!
I switched to Seymour Duncan blackouts (Mick Thomson Set) after have the 85-81 EMG combo for 13 years.
Now my guitar eats people
I've heard great things about those. but i didn't want to go from passive ti active on this guitar (lotta extra work involved)
Dimarzios rule. I love my paf pro in the bridge. Morbid Angel tone.
Love some Morbid Angel!!
That reminds me, I've got a paf pro with invader style pole pieces I need to put in the bridge someday.
@@jefff6509 interesting. Sounds like it would eather be blurry or hotter. Tried the invader. It eather loved a guitar it was in or it hated it
@@beatlejuice5951 Yeah, that's the reason I haven't tried it yet.
It was a Nice vidéo to watch. And alot of sick métal riff you made. I was always asking myself if its better to change pick-up or change guitar. Do you think There a guitar Price range that could be a good Idea to change pick-up?
That's a great question about pickup price range, and I really don't know. Here's the odd thing though....I'm actually taking this guitar back to Replay tomorrow to have them change the pickups back to the original Ibanez pickups! I'll be sharing a video on this soon!
i picked up a mint 1570 with case at a pawn shop for $500 about a year ago . its got SD pegasus and sentient set in them , tuned to B standard . its awesome . if you want higher output dimarzo X2n , Dactivator and Dactivator X are all awesome .
Yeah I'm not 100% happy with these and actually miss the stock pickups, believe it or not!
I own I esp Kirk Hammett guitar and a Ibanez Gio 7 string and a Epiphone pro 1 still learning I dig how you do the learning string by string and yeah from being in a coma years ago I still need to learn finger movement and that is hard from the coma but I’m at it as much as I can.
Hoping you fully recover soon!!
@@jasonstallworth yeah I’m good now it was years ago. Just numbness in my right side at times. But I’m fully back I healthy but tumor is still there so I just keep positive and do great thank you.
It takes time to get used to new pickups, I had the same problem, never disliked my stock ones but I thought changing them would be better...and maybe those aren’t the best pickups for you, but give it time man! Either you’ll grow to enjoy em or just swap them out! It’s a simple and rather cost effective thing to change your tone completely without buying guitars all together!
Cheers man!
Yeah I do plan to give it a little more time, but I can tell you the more I play it, the less happy I am! And I do miss those stock pickups now. They weren't the greatest but they do provide a very distinct tone
@@jasonstallworth that happened to me also, I feel you man! Sometimes we just click with the sound and never want to part with it...hope you’ll find something you enjoy even more than those old ones!
Awesome

I have a 93 - 94 RG470 with the same stock pickups. It was the first brand new guitar that I had bought and I loved it, still do. As I have gotten older, my ear has changed and the picks just lack something, especially the bridge pickup. The V8 just sounds thin when playing a chord, especially overdriven. Looking for pickups to get a fuller and tighter sound. DiMarzio is my pickups of choice, just not sure which ones.
Shortly after this video, I ended up having the stock pickups put back in and here's why: ua-cam.com/video/DRBU7IJWTqM/v-deo.html
Hi Jason, nice looking guitar there. I have 3550mz Prestige Roadster Orange. I have the same neck and bridge pickups and they sound great.
I want to change the middle pickup which is currently DiMarzio Blue Velvet. I want to go for a ST like quack sound. Otherwise I don't use it at all. Do you have a suggestion for that?
Dude not really...I'm actually considering switching my pickups back to the stock!
I know what a somewhat hard choice this has been for you, but im glad you finally changed them out. Dimarzio and ibanez fit very well together. Your cleans seem to have a more darker sound. Your distorted sounds seem to have more backbone, especially on chords. They will take some finding your tone, your ears are used to the stock pick ups.....
Dude, honestly as of right now, I'm not a fan of what I'm hearing and there's a different feel to it. Not saying they're bad because I know a lot of folks love these pickups. I'm going to continue playing through these (don't wanna make any rash decisions just yet), but don't be surprised if you see another video of me throwing another set of pickups on here!
@@jasonstallworth to be honest me, i would never go for dimarzio pups... i love seymour nazgul and sentient or a set of fishmans modern.. just the best pickups ever
I have the same guitar (basically... RG570 Genesis) with the same stock pickups. They've been fine for me, but like you, I've been thinking about swapping them at some point. Dimarzio and Ibanez seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly. I'm just trying to decide on which pickups to go with. I used to have a Jem with the Breed pickups that I really liked, but i don't think they make those anymore. Looking at maybe a Super Distortion with an Air Norton. Dunno.
I don’t see myself swapping these out again but I’d like to have a guitar with Duncans
@jasonstallworth I've tried a couple of Duncans in the past, I haven't had a lot of luck with them. I'd still like to give the Nazgul a shot eventually though.
I'm late to the party, but I didn't see anyone mention the most common "fix" for the classic Ibanez V7 V8, which is to swap the magnets. IDK why they did a ceramic neck and alnico bridge but when you swap it I find it fixes everything you tend to dislike about the V humbuckers. If you still got em laying around I'd say it's worth a shot!
I heard about that but decided to keep it as-is. I've come to really like these pickups and this guitar is the one that gets played the most these days. But it's definitely worth switching for someone who doesn't care for the way they sound as-is.
Can't say I blame you on first impressions of the Tone Zone I have heard guitars setup with the Tone Zone and it sounded alot different. I was impressed THEN. Their set up I think was why. Helix rack into Mesa Rectifier. The setups I have heard with the EVH heads that impress me are the Crunchlab/ Liquifire combo for one the second The X2N/ Paf Pro combo not sure of they are available as sets per say. Last and by no means least JB/Jazz $Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set that is just my opinion with that amp setup and pickups yeah so many flavours so its like having a preferred hamburger pickle. Awesome video
I'm dying to try the Helix! I loved my HD500 and used that for my first instrumental album.
@@jasonstallworth well I'll share a tidbit then. Helix Native is the cheapest easiest way to do TRY it and it will cost you nothing demo is free to download. I actually learned about the plugin the HARD WAY. Guitar review using it. Made the guitar sound like it was a model I wanted. I got it and it was a way overwound set of EMG Retroactives in it and have to send it back BUT asked the guy WHAT he used to do the video that made it so diff from my experience with same guitar. Helix Native Plugin. Makes a $100 guitar sound like $3000 guitar but it's not an honest way to review guitars! The Plugin...Impressive No Doubt
Damn man how does a man find enough time in a days work to shred guitar AND get swole ?! Damn! you and Kevin F are my role models lol
Yeah, I love some Kevin Frasard! We did a collab on my channel about a year or so ago
The Air Norton, Tine Zone combo seems to be a good set in this guitar if you're looking for 80s shredder tone or even EVH type sound. But for modern metal sound, tightness, etc, there are probably better choices. Did you end up swapping back to stock pickups?
Yeah, I actually put the stock pickups back in here: ua-cam.com/video/DRBU7IJWTqM/v-deo.html
I think many players do not spent time dialing pickup height and pole piece heights according to their guitars and the sound they are looking for. String gauge, bridge system, Wood and scale length amongst many other things affect the the results we are expecting. If you have a pup that gets you into the ballpark of the sound you are looking for, spending time tune it in might make you discover the awesome in your head was already there.
After all of this, I actually had the stock pickups put back in: ua-cam.com/video/DRBU7IJWTqM/v-deo.html
Just got brand new pickups today from Dimarzio. The Steve's Special for the bridge, and the Air Norton's for the Neck. I use a Jackson Guitar and this is my first time installing new pickups to my guitar. Is installing new pickups easy or confusing in your opinion?
Well dude, to me it's confusing and I am prone to screwing up stuff like this so I take my guitars to my local store in Tampa, Replay Guitar Exchange. Reasonable price and great work!
Cool video. I bought a Prestige RG652 recently with a fixed bridge and it has a Tone Zone, Air Norton combo. What didn't you like about the Tone Zone? On my guitar I think it beefs up the sound of the Ash body and maple neck/fretboard but I find it a little spongy for fast downpicking. Maybe it's just in my head. My amp is also kind of bass heavy. But at the same time I really like how it responds to fast gallops.
Dude, it’s weird…for the longest time, I didn’t care for the stock V7 and V8s. But when I had them changed to the DiMarzio pickups, I missed them and had them out back in after a few weeks.
Now I absolutely love my V7 and V8s on this guitar!
@@jasonstallworth I know what you mean. I still have my first electric guitar - a Gibson Les Paul Studio Standard that I bought new in 1986. I'm pretty sure it has Tim Shaw pickups in it but I often think about swapping out the pickups for something more metal oriented. What stops me is that I'm afraid it's not going to sound like my Les Paul any more and I will put the stock pickups right back in again. :-) Every guitar doesn't have to be geared purely for metal. It's nice to have at least one that works well for just about anything.
@@brutalslam8443 I’ll add that those Ibanez pickups (per your comment about everything doesn’t have to be geared towards metal, which I agree!), they’re extremely versatile! You could literally pull almost any style from blues to country to rock to metal!
Im thinking of doing a stupidly expensive revival on my first guitar (2005 rg170dx) locking tuners, bone nut, vegatrem, new electronics and probably this kit
I actually went back to the stick pickups and here’s why: ua-cam.com/video/DRBU7IJWTqM/v-deo.htmlsi=kd7elMT5ZNTlrbel
I would love that guitar in burgundy mist
That would be a cool finish!
Love your channel! Have a question to you: as an owner of both ltd 1000 series and ibanez prestige, which one would you prefer, if the price is almost the same(ltd's are usually a little cheaper). I've heard that the build quality of the ibanez prestige guitars is better, but ltd's often have better pickups and newer. What do you think?
P.S. btw sorry for my imperfect english)
Thank you! That's a tough question because they are two completely different guitars. I really like both of them almost equally but for different purposes. For metal, the LTD M-1000 wins all day. But I prefer the Ibanez for almost every other style (rock, hard rock, and solo type stuff)
@@jasonstallworth Thanks for reply! And what about the tremolo system and the build quality?
@@ragequit6792 I actually like these Ibanez tremolos a bit better than the Floyds
@@jasonstallworth Thanks! Just bought an rg3550. Awesome guitar!
Are they both F space? Bridge and neck pickups? I have same guitar and planning on upgrading the pickups.
I don’t recall…I ended up putting tie stock pickups back in (got another video on that)
Hi sorry for the possibly stupid question , but is this really the sounds available just from each pickup? Or is this with changing amp settings or using effects with each ?
That's a great question...I didn't change any amp settings other than going from clean to distortion. Also, I ended up putting the stock pickups back in a month later! Here's the video for that: ua-cam.com/video/DRBU7IJWTqM/v-deo.html
may I ask who did you send it too. so many local luthiers here aren't accepting usp or FedEx shipments due to covid . love the video
I had the pickups changed at a local place in Tampa, Replay Guitar Exchange (I have their link on the description)
@@jasonstallworth watching that soldering job super clean I like that
2570 or 1570+upgrade to REAL dimarzio? are the Dimarzio pickups in the RG2570 worth the price difference between it and the RG1570
I actually went back to the stock pickups shortly after...here's why: ua-cam.com/video/DRBU7IJWTqM/v-deo.html
I have the same guitar and i changed my stock pickups for the Air Norton (neck), Area 67 (middle) and Steve's Special (bridge). The sound is amazing. I was looking for a strato sound (position 2), a telecaster sound (position 4), warm sound for tapping, solos and sweep (position 1) and full power and harmonics (position 5). My guitar is a beast as yours! (Maybe i was wrong, but i use position 1 for the neck PU, position 3 for middle PU and position 5 for bridge PU). Bye!
Dude, I actually had the stock pickups put back in!! I have a video on my channel about that...probably a month ago
@@jasonstallworth grest, i will see it.
so after having the pickups for awhile was it worth it? I have heard good things about the v7,v8 combo. maybe EVO's would be better?
I actually had the stock pickups put back in (I’ve got a recent video on that and go into detail as to why I went back to them...)
@@jasonstallworth ahh cool. I think based on your experience ill stick with them. they all have pros and cons.
Personally I feel that the v8 bridge is a little muddy in high gain lead tone scenarios. have you heard of swapping the magnets from the v7 to the v8? apparently it can be quite good?
@@sean7193 I've heard of swapping magnet but I've decided not to mess with this guitar anymore and just let it be what it is.
Will this work on the GIO 170DX? Is it worth upgrading?
Not sure but I'd recommend getting an Ibanez model that already has those installed
I had the same opinion of dimarzio go with a nazghoul sentient set man cant go wrong
Dude, I just looked at those and considering going with them!
@@jasonstallworth they have the perfect amount of bite and growl for metal. I put them in my ltd mh1007 with coil taps and oversized capacitors and i can get any tone. Emphasis on tone! Good luck in the hunt bro.

Well, I actually got the Tone Zone sent to me from a good friend and old bandmate. So I decided to get the other pickups that somewhat matched.

Well dude...I ended up putting the stock pickups back in! lol ua-cam.com/video/DRBU7IJWTqM/v-deo.html
I'm getting very strong Joerg sprave vibes here
🤘
From the vids I've seen, if you're looking for higher output in the bridge, you'd use DiMarzio D-Activator X ua-cam.com/video/suEHw1j6jW0/v-deo.html
If you downtune to D Standard, I would go for Seymour-Duncan Black Winter. Best SD pickups for prog Metal ua-cam.com/video/183LjxMlXRE/v-deo.html
Was the burnt orange, Kramer HSS gone? I was sort of hoping you'd go for it too... ;P
I've heard good things about the Black Winter. I don't downtune or drop tune my guitars. I do know that I'm not 100% happy with these! So I'll be changing them out soon, I'm sure!
@@jasonstallworth I thought about down-tuning your Ibanez, because you seem to like to play heavy riffs on your 7-strings & play in the lower register of frequencies. Hence, if you down-tune the 6 strings to D Standard or at least E Flat, it might be more to your taste & you'll get a heavier sound. From what I've heard of all 6-strings Ibanez equipped with DiMarzio, they all have excellent/superb ''Cleans'' & high frequencies, high-pitch Lead tones for 80's style Leads, but for heavier (low frequencies) rhythm parts, the pickups seems to fall apart with High gain amplifiers. The D-Activator X seems to be the exception. Here's the video that convinced me that the Black Winter were possibly the best invention after sliced bread! ua-cam.com/video/d5F6jCP-j7c/v-deo.html :D
@@Juicexlx Yeah dude, I don't wanna downtune any of my guitars. That was the whole reason for getting a 7 string so that I could get those lower notes without dowtuning. I keep everything in standard because I also record for other artists sometimes, and play other styles besides metal.
As far as the pickups go, I'm gonna hold out for a while but I will probably eventually change them!
Air Norton/ Tone zone = Classic Ibanez
Paf pro / Súper distortion = Classic 80s sound
Evolution set = 90s
I actually ended up putting my V7-V8 stock pickups back in and haven't looked back !
Saymour duncan jb is way better than those dimarzios. But if you are looking for a high output pickup, better get a nazgul or a blackwinter.
I actually went back to the stock ones. I'll have a video explaining why soon!
@@jasonstallworth I think I already know why lol. My guitarist used to have those dimarzios in his iron label and I the result of our mix isn't great compared to the mix when we used black winter. I also get better results with stock pickup of solar guitars compared to dimarzio.
Hello Brother I need this guitar, could you please sale it for me ? If possible!
Thank you and God Bless you!🙏
Ummm…no. Never selling this guitar but I’m sure you can find a used one somewhere

And that's exactly why I just had the stock pickups put back in!
@@jasonstallworth every AN and TZ I’ve tried in other guitars and amps sound crap too. It’s just me. But, For me, the best set are Evo’s. I can’t get enough of them. Same with PAF pro’s. Just my thoughts.
Cheers and respect man.
your roaring singing voice is over the TOP do not add any fine voice, only your heavy voice is better chances for success
Thank you for that! I assume you listened to my latest album Masterpeace! www.jasonstallworth.com/music/masterpeace/
Congrats, you went with the most overused and boring pair of DiMarzios. The Air Norton is fine for a vintage-voiced humbucker but the Tone Zone is absolutely bland, all bass and low-mids, no upper-mids or highs.
You don't even need to pay so much nowadays for good pickups. Search for Dragonfire Screamers/Crusaders or IronGear Metal Machine.
I'm not sure if you watched the entire video but there's a story behind why I went with these (had the first part of the story not happened, I would have more than likely went with something else). But yes, I'm going to be searching for another set very soon.
