I actually just got the Caribbean yesterday as luck would have it. My first Ibanez and I wanted to just try one so the price was right to give it a go. From what I have seen from playing mine I am considering a nicer one at this point. I would prefer the Prestige for sure but for a first time out....... I'll keep mine just because of the finish. Being I live by the ocean and love it the finish speaks to me! Good to see you again Andy.

I did a big upgrade from beginner guitar to Prestige. At first I was going to get a cheaper model, but I decided to save up and go for prestige. The mad thing is that the 421 isn't even entry level, the Gio series is.
I've had a great time with my GRG and for around £180, there's a lot of guitar in there. Compare it to my Player Telecaster and the feeling is a whole world apart. I think the law of diminishing returns is true, but the Prestige model is probably worth every bit of money.

    • @shredd5705

Thing with cheaper guitars is, they are like box of chocolates, you never know what you get. With expensive models, the work quality is steady and rock solid. In cheap models you might get something just as good, or a Monday dud. In something like Ibanez Prestige line, there is no Monday duds. I think that's the primary thing you pay for in expensive guitar. That, and better pickups/hardware. The tone woods let's face it make very little difference in electric guitars

@@jdmaine51084 Don't know about semi-hollows, but the solid bodies I have are great. I have RG652AHMFX from Prestige line, and an older seven string RG1527Z. Both really good, can't complain about anything. Their quality control is so strict for those Prestige line guitars, that it's safe to even mail order one (as long as you have played it somewhere, so you know what you're getting into and how the neck profile feels)

The way Ibanez name their guitars is actually a lot better than every other major company imo.
My fender has some really simple name and it doesn’t even say it on the back of the headstock, so when I try to look it up to see what it’s worth (I want to sell it) I can’t even find the same one. Also trying to look up information on it is difficult because people either get the name wrong or don’t bother even using it.
Same for the Gibson sg I used to own, Gibson made so many sg’s over so many years, trying to find anything about that guitar specifically was like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
Since Ibanez’ system is naming their guitars basically like a serial number, it’s incredibly easy to find all the information you need on one specific model. For example, if you type in the specific Ibanez you’re looking for on reverb or sweet water, you will find it if it’s there. Whereas if you’re trying to find a specific fender, Gibson, Schecter, etc; you’ll type in whatever you’d think the name is and you’ll get loads of results filled with similar guitars with similar names with the correct one *may* be in there

421 has ceramic pickups a poplar burl top, meranti body, maple neck with jatoba board; and 652 has alnico pickups, ash body, maple/walnut neck with birdseye maple board, if we're to believe Ibanez website. The 5way switch is:
    1 bridge humbucker
    2 both as singles
    3 both humbuckers
    4 neck humbucker in parallel
    5 neck humbucker

Hey just wanted to say that I discovered you the other day with your review of the RG5121 (which I ended up buying from Reverb after watching your video) and I love your reviews and general attitude regarding gear. It's not often that people are willing admit the true narrowness of the gap between a lot of modern "levels" of instruments. You've helped give me confidence in the decision to go with a more high end instrument but also recognize that "mid level" guitars can very much have a place in my collection of "high end" IBANEZES.

Two great looking and sounding Ibanezes. I do think that overall the 652 did sound a bit better, but the 421 sounded great, particularly the dirtier stuff. So for an extra grand, you get a more versatile, finely tuned instrument. The 421 seems like a stupidly good option for an affordable rock/metal guitar, especially if you give it a little tlc.

IMHO I find it to be just as playable as a guitar in the 750 to 800 range (usd). I will replace the nut, put on locking tuners and maybe consider pickups down the line but I am very happy with my purchase. The shop gave me a full setup for no charge for free. If anyone is looking for a way to get a cheaper prestige, go for either the RG 550 Genesis, or the RG 565 Genesis. Both cost under £1000 (got my 550 for £799) and are made by the same team who make the prestige line of guitars in Japan. You're literally getting a prestige for half the price. The only thing some people might not like about the Genesis guitars is the old school heel joint, it's not the all access style like the more modern Ibanez guitars. For the price, it's one of the best guitar deals to be had right now.

Excactly, you need to have both and compare for a few months. I would expect Prestige to have better tuning stability, loger life of electronic components, better intonation, more reliable overall. But you missed the point the Prestige includes a case the comparision was not favor imho.

I went into the store shopping for another gibson les paul and completely lost interest. kept going back and picking this thing up. picked it up about 5 times and kept walking back over. its so loud unplugged. i paid 380. Wood looks much better on the cheap one. I had two of the cheap ones (RG350/RG421). After two years of good use one had a twisted neck and the other a ruined Edge tremolo. In the 90s i had an RGR565, comparable to the Prestige, qualitywise, it lasted for 15 years, then needed a refret and the tremolo some srews.
So it's 450,- every two years, or 1400,- for 15 years. You do the math.

Obviously the Prestige is better but it has better hardware. I commend you on nearly answering the question, "Is $1,000 extra Euro's worth it?" To witch you said Yes!, but than took it back and went with "whatever is better for you." Great demo though, I wish they just gave you the two without saying the price or the material and just let you decide then. Like the Pepsi Challenge. I do have one question: Would you ever dare actually sand down a guitar's neck and refinish it in satin? Well one more question as I'm sucker for a guitar's paint job, look, and weight. So having a lot of guitars is an addiction. Would you rather have the one Prestive or 3 different colors of R421 andstill save $200

I think I sort of understand their system for RG. vintage bridge usually ends with 20, floating ends in 70 or 50, fixed bridge ends in 21.
Difference between 70 and 50 is that 50 usually means there's a pickguard like how RG550 and RG570 are basically the same thing and the pickguard is the main difference

Ibanez in my opinion does the best job on their guitars even on their cheapest models. An Ibanez at 400 euros is very close... I can say many times that it is even better than guitars from other companies that they cost 700 euro. I have played with Fender, Jackson, esp, B.C. Rich guitars and more in that price 700-800 euro... and they was nothing more than woods for the fireplace

    1: bridge bucker
    2: both inner coils series
    3: both buckers series
    4: neck in parallel!!!!!
    5: neck bucker
I wish they would do position 2 as parallel for that chickenpickin quack, but the inner coils in series is a really nice Merle Haggard tele tone.

How can Fender show it's face when Ibanez is making these beautiful guitars?
Also, some of the more expensive Ibanez has ALNICO VIII - which sounds absurd, but it's actually a good idea since you get a lot more inductance without having to go ceramic.
But, most of the guitars are going to sound quite similar, especially if you have an EQ.

    • @TheGuitarGeek

There’s room for fender and Ibanez and lots more. They make VERY different guitars. Quality wise, Ibanez is among the best

    • @valueofnothing2487

@@TheGuitarGeek I meant they are ugly and 'cheaper'. Fender has always been cheap - it's their style. But now you pay more for them! Look at the uncomfortable heal joints, string trees, cheap, stamped trems, big ugly pick guards. Don't even give you 22 frets on the Squires. No shielding. Not to mention the beautiful finish you get now on the Ibanez. No comparison. All your getting with Fender is ALNICO pickups.
But I should add I like to buy a lot of cheap squires because they are easy to mod.

The plural for Ibanze: is it Ibanezes or Ibani? Include the plural for Ibanez...in your manuals Ibanez!

For all those saying GIO's are the entry level, yes they are since 97' but come on 400 series is a entry/lower cost RG as well. They always have been. I remember when the EX was around back in the late 80's early 90's that was the 'gio" type back then. Gio's are fine to start with, but let's be honest, they're really cheap. I've had better Chibanez guitars... They may look cool, but they're bottom of the barrel with an Ibanez name on it. For me entry level Ibanez will always be the 300-400 Rg series. As it is with a lot of Ibanez players that are at least over 25 years old. Gio's are made in China, one piece maple neck, cheaper woods, even cheaper hardware and electronics. The 400 series RG's, is a better maple wizard 3 neck, better hardware and electronics, better wood and make in Indonesia, to me that's an entry level guitar if you really want to learn. it has better playability, stays in tune better, feels and sounds like a real guitar and not a step up from a toy guitar which all these things will inspire people to stick with it more which is the job of an entry level guitar. I've had a lot of people I knew students as well want to give up playing cause they just couldn't get a good set up on the Gio's and it wouldn't stay in tune or this and that. The 400 series is also a guitar that you could gig with and it would hold up just fine. I know i'll get responses I'm sure about how wrong I am etc etc.. but, I've been playing guitar since 1980 and have played Ibanez since 87'. And I had a Gio just to see and I've had better Chibanez guitars.. for approx 180 dollars more you get a way better entry level guitar. As for the difference between prestige and the Rg 400 series there are quite a few differences, it used to be getting a guitar build it Japan was the big difference, but Indo builders have come such a long way. They're really making fantastic guitars. Will the 400 series come with upgraded pickups? No. Will it come with a 5 piece neck? nope. But that's really the two biggest differences. The neck can't really do anything about unless you want to order one and replace it. but the wizard necks on the Rg's are my favorite neck of all time, so I'm ok with that. replacing pups are very easy and not that expensive. Not worth the 1000 price difference. And if you don't know how to solder, EMG's are solderless and they have some really good pickups. I was anti EMG until the retro-actives came out and tried them. I'm sold and I ended up discovering the 57/66's that Ritchie Faulkner uses and i have 4 guitars with those in them. And it took me about 30 minutes total to install and no solder required.

@ $1,000 more the purple prestige ibanez is clearly overpriced. That said i think it would stand out even more with a slightly darker ash body, flamed maple fingerboard that's given the baked keasel treated fingerboard treatment.

Buy the 421 instead of the prestiege and spend 200 bucks taking it to a pro to do a setup and possibly a nut change. Spend the remaining pile of cash on good hardware/software and lots of lessons (the stuff responsible for 95% of your sound).
Unless you are shredding modern metal at an advanced level its highly unlikely the upgrade to the prestige will be worth it, especially if you are just dad-rocking.
I bought a very expensive boutique guitar and I seriously don't get much out of it aside from bragging rights and pride of ownership.
