  • Turbocharged Humvee Engine Teardown... We Find Major Issues! M1165 HMMWV
Hello everyone! I finally had time to work on my own truck and get the top end of the engine torn apart. Unfortunately, I did find some serious issues with the some of the cylinders and cracking in both cylinder heads. I was able to get lucky and find a friend selling his low mileage 6.5T engine for a very good deal! Since my current plans for this truck slightly differ from my original vision, I will be making a new update video regarding the path I will be taking for this truck. I can't wait to start working on this thing full blast and share the experiences with you all!

I have some really exciting plans for this truck, and I can't wait to share the journey with you guys! I will be covering the updated plan for this truck in a video coming up, as well as how to increase the reliability of these 6.5L engines and your HMMWV in general. Let me know if there is anything in specific you guys would like me to cover. Hope you all had a great Holiday! 😁🎄🎉

I feel your pain sitting and working on top of the tires etc… good job! It’s coming along! Good bang for the buck with the new/used engine! I agree about the 6.5’s their a good engine.

Usually its the #8 cylinder. Here's some tips to bulletproof the engine. 1) Get the spin-on style waterpump. 2) Do no use modern diesel coolant - it will cause exactly the kind of damage you see there. 3) Get the bypass restrictor fitting for the waterpump. 4) Add two bottles of water-wetting (NON DIESEL VERSION) to the coolant. The final thing is to watch your gauges. Don't run it hotter than 210'F. If you get it that hot, pull over and let it cool off.

That was crazy looking at that piston head you could see what looked like threads as if someone dropped a bolt in the intake at some point and it absolutely munched it up before spitting it out the exhaust.

I was thinking th same thing, how did it not fuck the turbo?

@@jimmac1185 I didn't even think about that haha. Used to my old non turbo truck! Maybe just broke it into small enough parts that it somehow didn't damage it.

Most likely that was a broken glow plug that caused the damage. It broke off and got ate by the piston. Maybe...

on the 6.5 ALWAYS use the AC Delco 60G self-regulating glow plugs. If you use anything else, the plug can overheat then break off inside the cylinder causing this kind of damage.

Would this be reasonably possible to do with the radiator stack and water pump in place?

Sounds like a lot. Have you ever upgraded the HP out of one of them? Like added an intercooler, injectors, added thicker head gasket or swapped to a different turbo with adjustable boost?
Looking at selling my m998 and getting a m1152 and swapping all my 4 man stuff to it.

I have a M1165, I can never hear my turbo. What’s your experience with hearing the turbo on the ecv w a deep fording exhaust

Reason most criticize these engines is that will provide a cheap source for them if everyone else is scared away from these engines.

Check out paradox by design for a super easy cooling system upgrade. I used one on my 99 M1097A2, 6.5L N/A.

There's a lot of interest in 4l80e, 6l80e and 700R transmission swaps to give some more life to 6.2L trucks. Any thoughts on the subject?

    • @tomelroy
      @tomelroy 2 роки тому

DId a 700r4 swap on a m998a1 6.2, night and day, highly recommended. Bowtie Overdrive built 700r4 stage 2.

@@lacknerish the 700r4 has no computer, it is setup just like the turbo 400. I purchased the complete setup with adapter from bowtie overdrive. I then sourced a Hmmwv PRND21 shifter...I personally would take it over the 4l80e. a built 700r4 is the perfect setup for the m998, it really made it feel like a hot rod! There are some great writeup on it on the steelsoldiers forum.

Hey! I’ve filmed a lot of videos over the past few months. I’m hoping to start getting them edited and thrown together in the next week or so. I have this truck mostly stripped down and ready to have the frame completely sandblasted, then I will media blast the body. I also have a brand new engine for this truck.

Swap in a 7.3 idi & not have the Detroit. You can buy a decent shape motor/core for like $500-700 on Facebook.
