  • Today I take the FoxFire slimline turning challenge, which is to turn a Slimline Pen with a specially designed Slimline pen blank that is only 12x12x110mm in size. I am doing it in Hard mode without a Pen Kit, have a watch to see if I can do it.
Pen Blank supplied by Todd at FoxFire Turning in Australia. Please see below link if you would like to get a hold of some of these blanks.

I've replaced the center band and finial with wood, making for some really nice custom Slimlines. You're taking custom Slimlines to a whole new level! I'm amazed at your patience, working with those close tolerances. Just drilling and turning a narrow blank is a challenge for me. But your videos are helping! :)

Nice work Stephen! A tip for turning between centres without a drive dog like that, you can make a little spigot that slides into the small hole in the end of the pen and centre drill the other side of it, it will let you put all the force on the flat end of the pen rather than expanding the little hole.

It looks like the rest is above centre and how your hands are positioned, are you are angling down on to the top of the blank to cut it?

Angle of the tool is a result of the size of my tool rest and not being able to get it in close enough to be able to have it lower.

Where did you find the M7.4x.5 die?

I bought a pack of tap and dies from a retiring pen maker a few years back and it came in that. I've never actually seen anywhere selling that Die.

Nice work. Can you let me know where I can buy ebonite please

I buy my Ebonite directly from the Japanese manufacturer "Nikko". Beaufort Ink in the UK stocks a good range of Ebonite available in smaller quantities.
