Not forgotten, these days it's recognized as the wonderful movie it is. And I'd say it's tied with Silence as the best adaptation of the authors' work.

Manhunter is my favorite psychological thriller. I saw it in the theaters when it first came out. It left such an impression on me. The soundtrack is the best. Well done Michael Mann
I just love Will and Molly's relationship in this movie. Oddly, it's one of the most functional marriages I've seen in film. She's strong, emphathetic and utterly supportive. Their relationship is based on respect. A nice change from the tortured dynamic you usually see in this type of movie. It highlights Will's essential goodness, despite the darkness he faces.
This movie was so special to me because during the scene where Will watches the movies and cracks the case....... I did too. It was almost simultaneous. While Will is focusing on the pets, I started to try and figure it out because I felt that Michael Mann was teasing us with the answer. I thought to myself “maybe the killer seen these tapes too, took me another few seconds to think he must work at a film developers lab, how else did he see these.” And these thoughts happened just as Will’s eyes widened, the music fades up and he says “you’ve seen these films, haven’t you my man” It was a draw between me and Will lol I’m not saying I’m super smart, I’m saying that the smart guy is Michael Mann. what happened with me is exactly what he wanted the audience to experience.

I’m glad you talked about this movie. This was one of my dad’s favorite movies(He even got Brian Cox to autograph his VHS of the film) And it brought back so many memories.
Ralph Fiennes is great and all but that reveal in Manhunter was terrifying, being the very first time the audience sees him just like Lounds. Also like Lounds, we don’t have the comfort of music but can only just sit back while he’s forced to listen to Dolarhyde torment and taunt him.
Damn, I watched Silence Of The Lambs and the rest of the Hopkins Hannibal films(probably way too young) first and when I heard of this film I brushed it off as probably inferior, but now I am super interested.
I prefer Manhunter over Silence of the Lambs. Edward Norton was such a wrong choice to play Graham in the Manhunter remake Red Dragon. He wasn't convincing nor believable at all and looked more like substitute teacher compared to how Peterson was for the role of Graham in Manhunter. No comparison when you think about it actually IMO. Peterson was the right choice for the role, hands down. For the remake Red Dragon they should have chosen Nicolas Cage to play Graham. Anybody but Norton.
Thanks for doing this Matt. I’m a huge “Miami Vice” fan, so I was excited to see this when it came out in the 80s. Seeing it in the theater emphasized the importance and power of the score and the contrast of the lighting. Still, I think it’s Michael Mann’s most under-appreciated film. Until you see it. Then you love it. William Petersen, Brian Cox, and the late Dennis Farina are great. But Tom Noonan’s performance breaks your heart. Great little film.

This movie is one of my favorites of all time, I got into Michael Mann after watching Thief and Manhunter in the same week, having seen Red Dragon beforehand but not being terribly impressed. After a thorough rewatching of Manhunter, I was enamored with the creepiness of the Tooth Fairy being a total mystery for the longest time combined with the moody dream-like nature that was familiar to me from Thief combined with how intense Petersen’s performance is, and the soundtrack always being the icing on the cake. Not only is it one of my favorite films of all time, but it elevated Michael Mann from the director that made cool movies like Heat and Thief to my favorite director of all time. Just for one correction, there is a small implication of Hannibal’s cannibalism in Manhunter where Graham mentions that Hannibal gave a recipe for potato chip dip when asked for the site of one of his victims. Also, I find it borderline hilarious that David Lynch turned down Manhunter after finding the story to be too violent, only to make Blue Velvet just as violent, if not more at times, and much more explicit. As much as I like David Lynch, I’m beyond glad Michael Mann landed this film.
Manhunter is my favorite Hannibal film. Silence of the lambs is great and all but this just stuck with me more if that makes sense. Thanks for the great video!
With a desire to investigate crimes in real life, watching this film was so amazing and reflected what I wanted to do- think like the criminal. All of Will Graham’s story is incredible in both book, this movie, and the show Hannibal as a dive into the mind of the psychotic. This film is a marvel to watch, and I go back from time to time just to see the revelation. I guess that’s my primary intake too.
The coolest thing about this movie is how close it is to Miami Vice in style. You can’t talk about it without mentioning the show. This was the first movie Mann made after it took off for him, and it is very much connected.

Badass flick. I remember when this came out. It was the same time another one of Michael Mann's projects was taking the country by storm; Miami Vice. Both are very stylized in their own unique way.
Without a doubt one of Mann's best works. I watched Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon, Hannibal ( movie & NBC series ) & Manhunter is my favorite. the cast of Petersen, Farina, Noonan, Greist, Lang , Allen is outstanding. from Crawford's unsubtle coaxing to Will's strong yet perilous relationship with Molly & Kevin, to the dialogue between Graham & Lektor, his loathing for Lounds. I really loved Brian Cox's portrayal of Lektor. just so unassuming in a terrifying way. could be your Neighbor, Mail carrier, Bartender. I remember Graham's response when Crawford asked why he was going to see Lektor " To recover the Mindset " & Lektor telling Graham " How did you catch me?....because we're just alike " & even though Fiennes was excellent as Francis Dollarhyde in Red Dragon, Noonan's portrayal was truly frightening. Graham & Dollarhyde were both seeing the same videos & images in ways that were so diametrical. to step into the mind of a serial killer in order to stop him, her, they is a journey that you never quite return from & that piece of you is lost forever. it's a great movie that far too often plays out in everyday life & I have the greatest appreciation for the people who work in that profession & the impact it can have on your Mental Health, Psyche, Family, Health, but we need those professionals as much as I hate to admit it.
Incredibly timely! I've been comparing the performances of Brian Cox and Anthony Hopkins lately. I think I enjoy the gravitas of Cox's "Lecktor" a little better, but of course Hopkins's flamboyant sociopath is great. Both are imposing figures in very different ways. I love the tone and style of Manhunter most, no question. Fan since I saw the Spider-Man Blue video when it came out (one of my favorites!), first time commenting. How would you rate the performance of Mads Mikkelson in comparison to Hopkins and Cox as Lector? I'm starting to think Cox might be my favorite, followed by Mikkelson and then Hopkins
@@evanrailman7898 Oh man, I haven't really sunk my teeth into Hannibal (get it???) yet. I've been aware of it for the longest time, I'm already a sucker for how creepy-artsy it looks, so I should sit down now with this whole quarantine situation happening. I have, however, watched clips, specifically to get a sense of Mikkelsen's performance, and he plays such a good cerebral, calculating Lecter, as far as I can tell. Different beast to Cox and Hopkins, definitely. They all play Hannibal with a different sort of charm, and Mikkelsen is definitely the coldest and creepiest (again, as far as I can tell). I think I might agree with your ranking.
@@yadielreyesuribarry5418 something I do love about different adaptations is the possibility for great different portrayals of the same character. I love them in different ways. Cox is so banal and ordinary in a way, and yet so terrifying, despite a relatively minor role. Hopkins was theatrical in such a larger than life unique manner . Mads is something else too. He has that cold, calculating, inhuman sociopath. LOVE THEM ALL
A pity it’s such a plot spoiler if someone stumbled across this before seeing the film but this was a really great study on one of my all time favourite films. A few takes on it that I hadn’t caught onto so it will make rewatch number 23 even better 🙂. It’s one of those films like the amazing ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ where you see something new each time you watch it. Great review, and even if the plot has been totally given away to you…. still worth a watch 🙂
One of my all time favorite films. It is head and shoulders above any of the Hannibal Lector films. To give an idea of the world that we lived in when it came out I was blown away by the technology that the FBI apparently possessed of faxing a photo of Dollarhyde’s driver’s license to the flying Lear jet. A piece of paper magically transported thru the air!!! As if the starship Enterprise was involved! Could such technology exist? I was lucky enough to see the version first that ends with Graham compelled by his inner demons ( As Lector says “ You want the smell? Smell yourself.”) to go “see” ( “It’s all about seeing with you, isn’t it?”) the family ( especially the woman with the “bloom”) that would have been “visited” next. Which a huge part of Graham that he struggles desperately to control and suppress wants to “use” (the people are just objects, they mean nothing”) take to satisfy his hunger. It is the only version that I watch. IT IS WORTH FINDING. One point that drives me nuts is that Michael Mann for some reason veers from the book by having the reporter “Lounds” place his hand on Graham’s shoulder when the photo is taken to be published in “The Tattler” to hopefully lure the killer into the FBI’s trap. In the book it is Graham who places his hand on Lound’s shoulder making the despised Lound’s his “pet”. Graham, by then had told us the killer “always kills the pet”. Which in the movie, as in the book leads to Lound’s horrific death at the hands of the monster. Did Graham brilliantly, diabolically set Lound’s up to be slaughtered? Films don’t get any better than this and the music and cinematography is so quintessential Michael Mann that the moment I saw it (Especially the blue tinted scene in the bedroom of Graham and Callie “we have it good don’t we? We have it more than good.” I was seeing Crockett and Tubbs and Miami Vice. Pure visual and auditory candy! Just brilliant. I searched for a long time to find the DVD version with the correct “I just had to see you” ending. Graham teetering on the precipice of insanity. As Graham asks Jack Crawford who sits staring incredulously at Will finally starting to realize how similar Graham’s mind is to that of his serial killer prey “Does this type of thinking frighten you?” I wondered, after this would Crawford ever feel comfortable being alone with Graham again?
Mann is a genius. Manhunter and HEAT are two of my top ten films ever. Manhunter stand head and shoulders above any Harris adaptation. Petersen should have been Oscar nominated for his portrayal of Graham. Noonan and Cox are terrifying as Dollarhyde and Lecter respectively. Red Dragon is the greatest serial killer book of all time. Riveting. Meticulous. Cannot put it down. I absolutely love this film. It is mesmerising.
Only seen this movie once, I regret giving away my DVD copy. Amazing video, great analysis, as always. Please continue doing videos on out of the ordinary movie choices, as well as comics etc
Watched the movie before watching your vid! Don’t know if I agree with every take or consider it a great movie, but it’s a damn good one and your video is still as enjoyable and well made as always!

When Graham and the others are trying to decode Lecter's reply to the Tooth Fairy, Graham mentions a time when lector gave authorities a recipe for potato chip dip when interrogated on the whereabouts of a victim. That's probably the only subtle hint of cannibalism in the whole movie!
Thank you for reminding me how awesome this film is, could you consider doing the Meryl Streep movies Plenty and French Lieutenant's Woman as well as Phantom of the Paradise and Rollerball( the original version with James Caan) and The Omega Man?
Saw this in the 80's when it came out. Have it on original DVD and Director's cut, (no spoiler, you got to see it) Still a favorite. FBI, going after the really, really bad guys. Read John Douglass books. He was a profiler with the FBI. This film is very similar to what they did in real life to capture true Evil in our society. This film will never outlive its purpose. Soundtrack is phenomenal. I hope you all like it as much as I do.
These are excellent observations. Before Thomas Harris himself turned Lector into some sort of tragic almost heroic figure, he was the embodiment of great human intellect turned to psychopathy. The later superhuman qualities of Lector was a trap into the absurd. It made the later movies....comical in some ways. This movie is some ways was superior to the book.
Never heard of this film, but am framiliar with the director through the film Heat, one of my favourite movies, so thank you, I am looking forward to watching!
I have yet to see this version of Red Dragon! I watched the Hopkins trilogy, Hannibal rising, and the show series. I did not know this existed! Now I'm intrigued! I gotta watch this!
What about the alternate cut? The one where Graham scares the next family that Dollarhyde chose for his next victims by visiting them in the evening just wantinf to "see them".
Late comment but I'm really glad you covered this movie. As I get older I much more appreciate this film in how it demystifies serial killers. Rather than seeing them as elevated being, the serial killers of this film are just people. People who have chosen to use violence as a means to appease their cruel desires. There's no sense that they're stronger or more elevated that the average person. For a crime film to do that is pretty novel, which is pretty sad upon reflection. Killers should not mythologized. There's a reason why they intrigue us but men like Ted Bundy and Ed Gein are not demigods. They're humans that come from broken lives and make bad choices. Elevating makes sense for a narrative but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I think this is just a part of a bigger issue that comes from "Villain Worship"
Great. I have been meaning to watch this film for a long time. I feel that it does not get enough credit and is overlooked because of Silence of the Lambs I believe Cox is more terrifying as Hannibal than Hopkins but that's just my opinion.
Tayo Jones, I completely agree. Hopkins seemed to try too hard to creep out whomever he was speaking to in SOTL. Cox didn't go for those theatrics. He already knew whomever he was talking to was well aware of what a monster he was. He didn't need to amuse himself. That's just my personal opinion/ how I saw it. Manhunter is an excellent film with a great cast, great visuals and the music/soundtrack is another key factor that really impressed me with this movie.
I hate to say it but Manhunter is actually better than the rest of the films and is the most faithful to the source material. The only thing that I'd say is better is the Jaime Gumm scenes from SOTL
@ 5:00 or so there's a quote from the director saying that he rejected realism in lieu of expressionism. This leads me to wonder just how great a Hannibal Lectar movie directed by Stanley Kubrick would have been 😢
I won’t do the thing where people dunk on red dragon, but Manhunter is one of my favourite films. Yeah it’s a serial killer film but it’s also a neo noir, dripping in atmosphere, sunsets, synths and colours etc I’ve read the novel and it’s good but this version will always be my favourite, it just feels so unique. I’m a big fan of Mann as a filmmaker, his films are so decadent, that’s how I’d describe them, so much going on but it’s all so good.
Its an awesome flick. Probably you missed mentioning ''a character'' that played in the background - its music .. Do make a video on The Thief and a special mention of the music by Tangerine Dream. Thank you.
The scene when Dollarhyde parks in front of Reba's house, waiting to meet her, and his actual look of joy when he sees her come home, only to get twisted when he sees her being escorted by their co-worker to her door...fuck. He knew she took rides home occasionally from co-workers, or usually by bus, yet he still goes full-psycho...the music and the lighting on his face...I shit you not, I've seen this masterpiece movie a zillion times since 1986 and you can see Noonan transforming before your eyes as he looks on from his van. Tortured. Brilliant movie. Silence of The Lambs is ok but Manhunter is the best.
The brutal irony of Dollarhyde's psychopathy is that he yearned to be seen in his victim's eyes, yet the only person who ever embraced and showed affection for him, even for a short amount of time, was a blind woman.

Dolarhyde tormenting Freddy Lounds and the "Do you see" monologue are some of the scariest parts of both Manhunter and Red Dragon.

Brian Cox is my favorite actor to play Lecter. He always came across as what someone like Lecter would actually be like in the real world.

I remember Graham's response when Crawford asked why he was going to see Lektor " To recover the Mindset " & Lektor telling Graham " How did you catch me?....because we're just alike " & even though Fiennes was excellent as Francis Dollarhyde in Red Dragon, Noonan's portrayal was truly frightening. Graham & Dollarhyde were both seeing the same videos & images in ways that were so diametrical. to step into the mind of a serial killer in order to stop him, her, they is a journey that you never quite return from & that piece of you is lost forever. it's a great movie that far too often plays out in everyday life & I have the greatest appreciation for the people who work in that profession & the impact it can have on your Mental Health, Psyche, Family, Health, but we need those professionals as much as I hate to admit it.

Incredibly timely! I've been comparing the performances of Brian Cox and Anthony Hopkins lately. I think I enjoy the gravitas of Cox's "Lecktor" a little better, but of course Hopkins's flamboyant sociopath is great. Both are imposing figures in very different ways. I love the tone and style of Manhunter most, no question.
Fan since I saw the Spider-Man Blue video when it came out (one of my favorites!), first time commenting. I'll follow this channel into the heat death of the Universe. Great job as always, Matt!

How would you rate the performance of Mads Mikkelson in comparison to Hopkins and Cox as Lector?

@@evanrailman7898 Oh man, I haven't really sunk my teeth into Hannibal (get it???) yet. I've been aware of it for the longest time, I'm already a sucker for how creepy-artsy it looks, so I should sit down now with this whole quarantine situation happening.
I have, however, watched clips, specifically to get a sense of Mikkelsen's performance, and he plays such a good cerebral, calculating Lecter, as far as I can tell. Different beast to Cox and Hopkins, definitely. They all play Hannibal with a different sort of charm, and Mikkelsen is definitely the coldest and creepiest (again, as far as I can tell).
I think I might agree with your ranking.
@@yadielreyesuribarry5418 something I do love about different adaptations is the possibility for great different portrayals of the same character. I love them in different ways. Cox is so banal and ordinary in a way, and yet so terrifying, despite a relatively minor role. Hopkins was theatrical in such a larger than life unique manner . Mads is something else too. He has that cold, calculating, inhuman sociopath. LOVE THEM ALL

A pity it’s such a plot spoiler if someone stumbled across this before seeing the film but this was a really great study on one of my all time favourite films. A few takes on it that I hadn’t caught onto so it will make rewatch number 23 even better 🙂. It’s one of those films like the amazing ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ where you see something new each time you watch it. Great review, and even if the plot has been totally given away to you…. still worth a watch 🙂

One of my all time favorite films. It is head and shoulders above any of the Hannibal Lector films. To give an idea of the world that we lived in when it came out I was blown away by the technology that the FBI apparently possessed of faxing a photo of Dollarhyde’s driver’s license to the flying Lear jet. A piece of paper magically transported thru the air!!! As if the starship Enterprise was involved! Could such technology exist? I was lucky enough to see the version first that ends with Graham compelled by his inner demons ( As Lector says “ You want the smell? Smell yourself.”) to go “see” ( “It’s all about seeing with you, isn’t it?”) the family ( especially the woman with the “bloom”) that would have been “visited” next. Which a huge part of Graham that he struggles desperately to control and suppress wants to “use” (the people are just objects, they mean nothing”) take to satisfy his hunger. It is the only version that I watch. IT IS WORTH FINDING. One point that drives me nuts is that Michael Mann for some reason veers from the book by having the reporter “Lounds” place his hand on Graham’s shoulder when the photo is taken to be published in “The Tattler” to hopefully lure the killer into the FBI’s trap. In the book it is Graham who places his hand on Lound’s shoulder making the despised Lound’s his “pet”. Graham, by then had told us the killer “always kills the pet”. Which in the movie, as in the book leads to Lound’s horrific death at the hands of the monster. Did Graham brilliantly, diabolically set Lound’s up to be slaughtered? Films don’t get any better than this and the music and cinematography is so quintessential Michael Mann that the moment I saw it (Especially the blue tinted scene in the bedroom of Graham and Callie “we have it good don’t we? We have it more than good.” I was seeing Crockett and Tubbs and Miami Vice. Pure visual and auditory candy! Just brilliant. I searched for a long time to find the DVD version with the correct “I just had to see you” ending. Graham teetering on the precipice of insanity. As Graham asks Jack Crawford who sits staring incredulously at Will finally starting to realize how similar Graham’s mind is to that of his serial killer prey “Does this type of thinking frighten you?” I wondered, after this would Crawford ever feel comfortable being alone with Graham again?
Mann is a genius. Manhunter and HEAT are two of my top ten films ever. Manhunter stand head and shoulders above any Harris adaptation. Petersen should have been Oscar nominated for his portrayal of Graham. Noonan and Cox are terrifying as Dollarhyde and Lecter respectively. Red Dragon is the greatest serial killer book of all time. Riveting. Meticulous. Cannot put it down.
I absolutely love this film. It is mesmerising.
Normally these film analysis videos make me cringe with their overreaching and overanalyzing, but this was superbly done!

Your recurring dreams may mean that you were plumbing more deeply into your interior. Sometimes external life circumstances can elicit interior growth/self-knowledge reflected in these kinds of dream-symbols.

When Graham and the others are trying to decode Lecter's reply to the Tooth Fairy, Graham mentions a time when lector gave authorities a recipe for potato chip dip when interrogated on the whereabouts of a victim. That's probably the only subtle hint of cannibalism in the whole movie!

Saw this in the 80's when it came out. Have it on original DVD and Director's cut, (no spoiler, you got to see it) Still a favorite. FBI, going after the really, really bad guys. Read John Douglass books. He was a profiler with the FBI. This film is very similar to what they did in real life to capture true Evil in our society. This film will never outlive its purpose. Soundtrack is phenomenal. I hope you all like it as much as I do.
These are excellent observations. Before Thomas Harris himself turned Lector into some sort of tragic almost heroic figure, he was the embodiment of great human intellect turned to psychopathy. The later superhuman qualities of Lector was a trap into the absurd. It made the later movies....comical in some ways. This movie is some ways was superior to the book.
Manhunter and To Live and Die in LA really should have rocketed William Peterson to stardom. It’s crazy how Hollywood works
I saw Manhunter maybe five years ago and was blown away by it. It didn't feel like a movie made in 1986.
Never heard of this film, but am framiliar with the director through the film Heat, one of my favourite movies, so thank you, I am looking forward to watching!

I have yet to see this version of Red Dragon! I watched the Hopkins trilogy, Hannibal rising, and the show series. I did not know this existed! Now I'm intrigued! I gotta watch this!

Late comment but I'm really glad you covered this movie. As I get older I much more appreciate this film in how it demystifies serial killers.
Rather than seeing them as elevated being, the serial killers of this film are just people. People who have chosen to use violence as a means to appease their cruel desires. There's no sense that they're stronger or more elevated that the average person. For a crime film to do that is pretty novel, which is pretty sad upon reflection.
Killers should not mythologized. There's a reason why they intrigue us but men like Ted Bundy and Ed Gein are not demigods. They're humans that come from broken lives and make bad choices. Elevating makes sense for a narrative but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
I think this is just a part of a bigger issue that comes from "Villain Worship"
Great. I have been meaning to watch this film for a long time. I feel that it does not get enough credit and is overlooked because of Silence of the Lambs I believe Cox is more terrifying as Hannibal than Hopkins but that's just my opinion.

Tayo Jones, I completely agree. Hopkins seemed to try too hard to creep out whomever he was speaking to in SOTL. Cox didn't go for those theatrics. He already knew whomever he was talking to was well aware of what a monster he was. He didn't need to amuse himself. That's just my personal opinion/ how I saw it. Manhunter is an excellent film with a great cast, great visuals and the music/soundtrack is another key factor that really impressed me with this movie.

I hate to say it but Manhunter is actually better than the rest of the films and is the most faithful to the source material. The only thing that I'd say is better is the Jaime Gumm scenes from SOTL
I love Silence, so it's a tossup for me. Gumm is pretty fantastic, in the most horrifying sense, of course.

I won’t do the thing where people dunk on red dragon, but Manhunter is one of my favourite films.
Yeah it’s a serial killer film but it’s also a neo noir, dripping in atmosphere, sunsets, synths and colours etc
I’ve read the novel and it’s good but this version will always be my favourite, it just feels so unique.
I’m a big fan of Mann as a filmmaker, his films are so decadent, that’s how I’d describe them, so much going on but it’s all so good.

Silence of the lambs , red dragon , hannibal- as Lecter says , 'Second - raters , the lot of them' movies that dont come close to Manhunter.
This is one of the first movies to go in depth with forensics and criminal profiling. It was a massive influence on realistic crime shows

The scene when Dollarhyde parks in front of Reba's house, waiting to meet her, and his actual look of joy when he sees her come home, only to get twisted when he sees her being escorted by their co-worker to her door...fuck. He knew she took rides home occasionally from co-workers, or usually by bus, yet he still goes full-psycho...the music and the lighting on his face...I shit you not, I've seen this masterpiece movie a zillion times since 1986 and you can see Noonan transforming before your eyes as he looks on from his van. Tortured. Brilliant movie. Silence of The Lambs is ok but Manhunter is the best.
The brutal irony of Dollarhyde's psychopathy is that he yearned to be seen in his victim's eyes, yet the only person who ever embraced and showed affection for him, even for a short amount of time, was a blind woman.
