Great vid, I set this up in my home assistant back in 2021. Today got a notification that there was a firmware update. I proceeded to update, now my reed switch is no longer detected on my zwave js integration in Home assistant. Update - Wound up re-settingthe relay after the firmware update, then adding then excluding then adding back into Zwave JS, and back up and running. Ive had this device since 2021. Great piece of gear for sure! I will probably stay away from the firmware updates in the future..lol

@@cornellrwilliams I like Z-wave because it's independent of other tech and I've had Z-wave devices for a long time and when they are configured right, they work and work. I want to avoid using a cloud service to manage my devices so I am still holding on to my Vera Edge controller.
This video is exactly what I was looking for. I learned a lot about the ZEN 17 from you. I bought the Zen 17 to control a gate opener. I don't require any inputs for the Zen 17. All I need it to do is, when I turn it on momentarily in Home Assistant, it will close a circuit and activate the gate (open or close). I'm assuming that I just need to connect the normally open wires (from the gate controller) to NO C R1 on the ZEN 17?
All the settings I showed in the video have the same effect regardless if you use the inputs or send Z-Wave commands. I believe that's how you would wire it up but I'm not 100% sure. I would need to look at the wiring diagram.
Cornell, thanks for the video! Your knowledge is far beyond mine and although I’m pretty good with most zwave stuff I have trouble with understanding relays. I’m trying to wire the exact same alarm that you use in the video and I’m having trouble. I set up a zwave smoke alarm in my garage that I’m certain I would not hear inside my house. My goal is simply to set off the siren inside the house when the zwave smoke detector reports smoke detected. I know how to create the rule for this I’m just struggling to get the wiring correct. Any help is appreciated
All you need to do is connect the positive wire from the power supply to the C terminal then connect the positive wire on the siren to the NO terminal. Then connect the negative wire on the siren directly to the negative wire on the power supply.
@@cornellrwilliams yeah that’s exactly what I have but it seems like my relay is not getting power. I put a meter on the power and it’s getting 12V to the relay but I’m unable to switch it on and off via my zwave hub (hubitat)
@markt4567 is your device using factory settings? If so I would take a wire S1 to C on the input side and see if that turns the relay on and off. If that works then it might be a habitat issue

Yes you can do this but if you want the button to control the relay without going through the Controller you would need to find a button that has association groups that send basic commands. You would also need to make sure your buttons supports the Multi Channel Association command class. The basic command is what turns the device on and off. Wether or not your device supports the Multi Channel Association command class will determine whether or not you can Individually controll each relay. If your button supported it you could have one button turn relay 1 on and off then another button turn relay 2 on and off. If I doesn't support it you would only be able to turn both relays on and off. You can find out what association groups a device supports as well as figure out if it supports the Multi Channel Association command class by visiting products.z-wavealliance.org/. This is the official catalogue of all Z-Wave Certified Devices and is the first place you should look to learn about Z-Wave Product Offerings as well as learn specific information about a Z-Wave Device.

@markt4567 you only need one power source for the Zen17. Then you will have another power source connected to the relay to power your load
