- This summer has seen much higher menu prices in Turkey, are tourists being ripped off? Turkiye has one of the highest inflation rates in the world this year and the menu prices in resorts have more than doubled since last year, but the exchange rate has also doubled, now £1 = 21 TL so are tourists actually being ripped off or is it just hype?

Haven't watched the video yet, but yes, as a Turk who lives in Istanbul and visited Kalkan this summer, i can say that most of the time the prices are much higher when the customer is a foreigner, even when you do the math (£1 = 21 TL)
Its true that there is a very big inflation issue, but tourists should still be cautious and check the tabs. Local merchants are desperate for foreign currency, especially in places with high tourist rates(Mediterranean Region, mostly.)
My advice, choose one of these two options:
1) Go there with a group and have a Turkish guide that you know/trust. You are more likely to be targeted if its your first time or you are inexperienced. So having a guide who is familiar with the area could help you avoid places that overcharge, scam, etc.
2) Go to a more remote area. There is almost certainly going to be more greedy people if you are going somewhere that is highly frequented by tourists. Choose locations that aren't well known, but still have good quality. Basically, do your research. And read reviews to see how the people who visited a certain place before you felt. After a while, you yourself will also have experience and be capable of avoiding trouble.
I know the holiday season is basically over, but hope my advice helps. I appreciate and support tourists who visit my country.

Just come back from kalkan I couldn't believe the prices £10 for a breakfast... that's £3 more than home in Liverpool. Beer was the same as home ... only a few years ago I was in altinkum couldn't spend my money ... but it won't put me off going back I love the place and the people
We ALWAYS enjoy your youtube informative and delightful streams. We will be arriving in Fethiye in a few weeks and really looking forward to it. The present prices as you aptly shared compared to UK and US are more than fair. Indeed the turks deserve a reasonable profit and wage.. Sadly..the world leaders are making it tough on all of us financially..
We went to Side in August. First time in Turkey and I was quite shocked how expensive it was. Not cheap at all as I’d been told for years.
I am just back from 3 weeks in Turgutreis and found the price of food/drink and quality is still excellent value for money compared to what I would pay in Edinburgh where I live. My accountant (wife) tells me we spent a similar amount to what we normally do (taking into account inflation). Turkey is also a lot cheaper than Spain where we have also holidayed this year. We have been visiting Turkey for 20 years and think it still offers the best value for money set against other holiday destinations.
We are also going to Turgutries next year, and we have chosen the hotel Le Blanche resort and spa right on the beach. All inclusive and can't wait. I have Turkish friends that have used this resort, and they say it's great

Hi mick and trudie. I love turkey 🇹🇷 and have been visiting for over 20 years. Hearing the prices in bars and restaurants are vastly increased they will just put the tourist off as I’m certainly thinking of going back to Tenerife far better for value for money. I’m going to marmaris in October and heard the prices have rocketed. It’s a pity as I love the country

Great video and I totally agree that with Pound you are extremely comfortable living/visiting Turkey. Food/Rent/Bill/Engergy prices are rising everywhere in the world. Its normal for Turkeys prices to go high with the inflation but Turkey is still very cheap considered the prices and the food quality in the UK even when you buy from shops everything is way more worth the money you spend. I love that you guys are chilling with the camping chairs like the Turkish do! Also to give an exact example from today my mother who lives in istanbul showed me seasonal local fish prices and 1 kilo palamut fish is 70 lira meanwhile we are paying 4/5 pound minimum for worlds smallest seabass in the UK which is maximum 300gr. I’m here in Antalya Oct 2023 and the prices have gone up by quite a bit. That 50TL has gone up to 150 - 200. I’m quite surprised how expensive it is. Probably more than Greece and Spain
Akyaka restaurant in April…22..£10 per head.. August..22..£30 per head..same restaurant..so yes rip-off..needless to say we didn’t return..their loss.
The room rates to stay in Istanbul in August 2022 were double the usual rates. Unbelievable. The airfares were crazy too.
I've just eaten at a restaurant in Kas peninsula, beautiful setting and superb attentive service. A margarita, free mezze sampler, mushrooms in cream and cheese sauce, grilled filleted sea bass, a bottle of Chardonnay, chocolate ice cream, and turkish coffee came to only £40.
It’s not just 🇹🇷 Mick . We found Oludeniz more expensive than usual in June.
We’ve just returned from Cyprus and it wasn’t exactly cheap either.
Regardless, Dalyan next year is booked up and I personally can’t wait.

We spent 3 months at Ulu Deniz in 1974 for less than $1,000.
Delicious wine, cigarettes and a haircut cost 50 cents then.
It was completely undeveloped and an army garrison was stationed there.
I nearly drowned in the treacherous currents hidden there.
I do always enjoy with your videos and how bonded you are to each other. I believe that the issue is there is a huge inflation as same around the world and exchange rate is being pressurized in Turkey. So it seems like there is a ripping.

I am in the middle of a trip in Antalya region. prices are absolutely absurd., I went in 2018 to Istanbul and found the sellers there to be more willing to entertain bargaining, over here and now they look at you in disgust and openly voice their opinion to colleague/family whilst you're trying to get a reasonable deal. it feels like they are so greedy and used to accepting this trade, hence the stubbornness. jetski alone for 15mins is over £50 LOL. it's a pisstake
I did a summer job in Turkey once. Apparently they call summer as "season", which lasts 6 months then winter comes & they'd leave for Istanbul -- so they have to make the most in summer

Spent 2 weeks in marmaris, been coming for 7 years and always recommended it, well no longer.. Food and soft drinks prices... More expensive or matched the uks prices for food id never eat here never mind elsewhere. 4 kebabs 8 soft drinks.. No salad or maze 88 pounds.
4 slush drinks 4 ice creams.. 45 pounds.
Not to mention the 3800 it cost to go! Not worth my 10k!

I feel like the prices in resort towns in any country are indexed more towards the income levels of the countries that send tourists to those resorts, rather than the prices in the rest of the country that’s receiving the tourists. We recently came back from a trip to Roatan Island, Honduras, where the prices were comparable to what we would pay for a similar meal here in the US. We heard that mainland Honduras is much cheaper. I think going to popular resorts like Fethiye or Bodrum and expecting to pay, say, Malatya or Corum prices is very unrealistic. I realize your video was more about the YOY change from last year, but I still thought I would share that general comment/observation about “resort prices” vs. “real prices” in a given country.

They are definitely ripping tourists and locals alike. The quality has gone down, especially in Kusadasi. If you stick with Turkish, it's reasonable, but tourists restaurants are a no no. I live in Selcuk and even the prices in the local market are far higher than Tire market. I think it's where you live. Not everywhere is expensive, just this Aegean region and of course Istanbul. I just spend a week in kusadasi very pretty place. But the excursions seemed very expensive. At the beginning I was using the taxis and it became quite expensive after I found out about the buses and I was shocked how cheap they were. All in all I liked turkey but i think next year I’ll try one of the North Africa countries.
I’ve been holidaying in Turkey twice a year (mainly Kalkan & Kayakoy) for the last 12 years.
This year we spent about 1/3 more than we usually do. While I appreciate the Turkish people have it hard, this video is nothing more than a sugar coating!
We’ve seen a steady increase over the last few years, but this year, £500 more is a big increase for doing the same as we’ve always done! 🤷🏻♂️

hey mate, a Turkish here. Prices in Turkey, especially food prices whether it's supermarket or dining out have dramatically increased. Funny part is, they increased more than the exchange rate so even if you come here with some hard currencies you would still be spending more. Comparing the prices across mainly Europe, also considering the portion size and the quality, dining out in Turkey is almost same as dining out in a big European city.
People call it panic economy, business owners assume that at any moment, exchange rates could raise and/or a huge price increase can strike their business so they are actually keeping their margins more than they used to.
Had 4 days of holiday in Bodrum this summer, it was painful for me.

The prices in resort areas are as much as 200% more than anywhere else! )
I’ve came very close to buying property out here myself in the past, but at the moment way too unstable,even if you’ve done it properly (legally)!

Thanks for this video. We are off to Kalkan and Marmaris next week. We were in Fethiye in April. Prices appear to be a little higher than previously but still very reasonable and considering average Turkish salary - Tourists are still very well off. We have visited Turkic on numerous occasions over past 40 years but never visited Marmaris.
Marmaris is the capital of ripping off the British here, be careful :)
Hey enjoyed the vlog! I'm also vlogging Turkey (Turkiye) and I will say the tall can of Efes has jumped a lot in price! Ouch! I agree 100% that all you need to do for a restaurant is step even just one or two blocks off the tourist strip to get much better prices for as good or better food/drink. Cheers!

I spent 2 weeks in Oludeniz in August and watched the food and drink prices rise several times during my two-week stay. The only time I got ripped off was when I was charged stupid money for two milkshakes on the beachfront. But that was my mistake as I didn't ask the price first and had left before I checked my change. Fethiye prices were reasonable, and we ate twice in Kayakoy where the food was amazing and the prices low.
Here in istanbul, tourists and foreign residents such as I are being continually ripped off. Its deplorable.

I just got back from marmaris and the prices in the restaurants were amazing I didn't feel ripped off I couldn't believe how cheap it was two stake meals and four drinks less than 27 quid try getting that in the UK 😎👍
I went to Side in June and stayed self catering for a week and then all inclusive.
When we did eat out, avoided tourist restaurants in the old town and eat at places locals were eating.
Love Turkey so much, but at the moment with what I’m seeing with so many law changes and super inflation, for the first time I’m actually wondering if it will be worth selling up in Sydney Australia for Fethiye/Kas/Antalya etc.
Prices of restaurants have changed quite a bit to what I had paid in January which is to be expected… At least my wife and I would save a small fortune just because we don’t drink alcohol 😂
Space is limited in those areas. There is high demand and always will be. If you have chance do it as much as early. Because others are keep buying.
Try air bnb or house change apps. No need to buy property. If I had a house in Fethiye I would love to change with youts for a month 😀
Don't believe everything they tell you, Turkiye still offers the best places and best prices, just stay local and stay away big brand name hotels and restaurant, you will be fine.

I've arrived in Türkiye on 18 August since then I travelled Istanbul, Samsun, Gaziantep, Cappadocia, Kaş, Kemer and currently in Antalya old town my next stop is Marmaris I found that tourists spot are definitely getting a bit to expensive and almost prices are close to or equal to what I would be paying in Australia. So I do look for where the local eat and save alot money.
exactly, people forgets that we just came out of Covid 19 side effects lingering, and we are facing WW3 and femimine as grain shipments were blocked even Erdogan made a deal, West is not abiding with the deal, they let Ukraine ship but not Russia, if this continue Russia will pull out of the deal than you will see what the prices will be loaf of bread in US 2 times higher, pasta 5 times higher,this is all over the World, and Turkiye still offers the lowest prices

Another great video guys, we have just come back from Hisarönü, we didn't think there was much of a price increase, the Eski bar we started the night off in charged 60 lira for a beer but cheaper in other bars, and no didn't feel as though we had been ripped off because we are coming back next year. 😀

This is just plain lies
Eski bar is the cheapest bar in Hisaronu other than the reef bar which is around the same price 90 lira
In summary in 2020 a beer was £1.80p on average in Hisaronu, its now £4
Imported spirits with mixer in 2020 was £4 this year its £7 to £12
A chicken /lamb Donna wrap was £1.80 in 2020, now its £5.50
A T Bone steak in 2020 was £10 now its £20 to £25 quid.
Anyone who says the prices are the same is straight up lying.

Yes that’s so true , The Turks are just putting up all their prices to see how much they can get away with, I know there inflation is high and they put prices up to reflect that , but now they seem to put another 50% on top of that again . There are also a lot more thefts from Hotel bedrooms now , and even from the locked safe in rooms! But they don’t steal all of it , they are very Crafty they take say £100 to £200 , sometimes more , or one or two items , a ring or watch etc , and leave the rest , So when a holiday maker complains to hotel manager or police , they say if you were robbed why didn’t they take everything! This is a well known act by hotel staff the world over , and police and Managers know this and Fob people off !

İyi günler Mick Amca. Another great video. Very informative. I will be arriving in Fethiye on Friday and I was having this very conversation only yesterday. It's about finding the middle ground. The issue because most of us are returning year in year out, there are 'some' English tourists that still think they should be paying 10tl for an efes and 10tl for a fry up. Not understanding the current economic situation in Türkiye and not factoring in the exchange rate. On the other hand their are some establishments that think it's acceptable to charge 90tl for the same efes that's 50-60tl elsewhere. I appreciate the overheads for a prime location establishment demand a higher cost to the customers, however there are some bars/restaurants taking the biscuit. As you quite rightly stated, like any tourist resort in the world, if you go just a stones throw away from the main tourist areas, even just a street or two, there are still reasonably priced places to go.

Great video, but I do wish you touched on the ways some of these places do actually rip people off. I'm Currently in Istanbul. Biggest trick I've seen the restaurants have is adding a 10%-20% "service fee" to the tab. Of course it's not on the menu and not listed anywhere, if you argue it, they'll shrug and take it off. You won't see them add this to the tab of a Turk, only for foreigners. I find it deceptive and rude, completely takes away any respect or positive feelings I had for the place or the people there, even if they treated me well and the food was good.
If the staff easily speak/understand English then that's a red flag for me to double check the bill before paying. Whenever I'm within 10km of tourist epicenter (I consider it Sultanamet for Istanbul) I'm also looking out for restaurant shenanigans. I've even heard of places having two menus, one priced higher for foreigners and one with lower prices for Turks. The Farther out you go the more honest the business people are, in general.
Don't get me started on the cab drivers or what agencies try to stick you with when you're looking to rent a flat... You should really make an honest video on all these things foreigners should look out for, no country is without it's negatives and most of your viewers would be the type of targets for this stuff. I can easily see a foreigner who's looking to stay in Turkey long term, spending 30-80% more money if they don't have a local friend to help them navigate/negotiate.
Turkish customers also experience that %10-15 "service fee" scam in many restaurants, or "küver" which basically means "house charge" per person added to the tab for around 75 liras per person. That is not a tourist trap, that is perfect dishonesty. And when a Turk argues about it, they won't shrug and take it off. They will get violent :)

As a counterpoint we just spent a day in Akyaka where prices were very different (lower) than Icmeler and Marmaris.
I came to Turkiye some days ago, staying in a sleepy village by mountains.. I visited Fethiye and was quite surprised. It looked more like a small village in these videos, but it was a bubbling, busy city after all. 😅 At least for someone from Finland.. But I think I liked it and am gonna visit again next week. 🌞🤗🌸

Unfortunately, accommodation has skyrocketed. For example, three years ago, the everage cheap accommodation in Istanbul hotels were ₺120-150 lira per night, but it has gone up up to 500 lira per night this year.
They also Rob tourist in so many ways, because of desperation. One should be very careful in Turkey, especially in big cities
Very careful how? Istanbul is safer than any city in the US. Not even in the same stratosphere.

Another good informative video guys, we were in Olu Deniz back in April didn't notice much change in prices. Next May we go back but all-inclusive, but still have a couple of nights out, maybe take a bit extra lol. On another subject any advice on the Jiva Beach in Calis, and the resort itself as thinking of booking soon thanks. 👍
Can’t say about the hotel but the beach has had some bad press recently because it’s not being kept clean however we love the resort that’s why we live here
The way I see it, food is about half the price of the UK, but alcohol isn't exactly cheap. In my part of the UK I can get a beer for £2.80.
The price of any alcohol is expensive in Turkey due to their president, who raises alcohol taxes about 2 to 3 times per year, as he doesn’t want his people getting into the habit of drinking alcohol, ( Strict Muslim) All the bar owners are worried as it puts off their customers who will buy from a supermarket and drink back at their hotel or rented apartments or bring plenty of duty free over with them .
Another great video as usual, We spent 3 weeks in Marmaris this June/ July and the prices were all over the place. In a traditional Turkish BBQ restaurant a meal of mezes 4 mains 4 soft drinks 2 beers and a half ltr of Yeni Raki was about 830tl, in a bar you would be looking at 12-1400tl and the worse deal we got was in a bar on the main drag in Armulatan where we were charged 845tl for 2 beers 2 single Raki and 4 Turkish tea. We are still looking forward to going back next year but the prices for package holidays are so expensive at the moment, we paid £2700 for three weeks for 4 people and at this present time the same 3 week holiday in the same hotel at the end of June 23 is £5200 with the same tout operator.
We were there in july too. In armutalan you cant look at the menues on display at the door, you get pestered and they dont leave you alone or shut up. So we walk off. Then when your eating they think its ok to start dancing and shouting. Most offputting, after 2 nights we went near the front. Even though our hotel was near armutalan.
Try airbnb and live like locals here.

if you have not noticed, we are close to WW3, we are faced with feminine, wars, covid19 after effects, not be able to ship grain from Ukraine, (But thanks to Erdogan he worked out a deal to ship) , but USA-West playing a dirty game, they don't allow Russian grain and fertilizers to be shipped ,even Erdogan made a deal to, they have blocked theRussian banks so that Russian companies can not be paid for the shipment, Bread prices 5 times higher now, even in US, we pay for a loaf of bread $7 used to be $3.00 .pasta? 6 times higher, even in Italy 4 times higher, you do not expect the Turks to lose money feeding you as cheap as before, I think all these critizim of Turkiye is unfair and unfounded, if you go to local PAZAR Turks call it one kilo of tomato is 80 cents, eggplant is 85 cents, everything is so cheap ,but Turkish farm goods has to keep up with demand as Rich foreign nations were gobbling up Turkish farm goods with their exchange rate ,farmers started to sell their goods to foreign nations and made Turkish supermarket prices high, so the price increase has to be there to make it more expensive for the foreign nations, and Erdogan raised the minimum pay across the board 65% still short of 80% inflation, NO Turkiye is not expensive, only foreign owned hotels are, we stay local hotels, and eat at local restaurants ,they are just as good even better, next time go to Expedia book a Turkish hotel, and rent a car which is still cheap as their cars runs on Natural Gas and shop at Turkish pazars ,I promise you you will pay 40% less for everything, ask Mick he knows where to stay where to shop, he will tell you

I'd say so, recently visited Antalya and some beverages were UK prices I was quite surprised, I think we all know tourist attractions have different prices etc.

But when I was in Marmaris two months back the prices were high even by UK standards
Hey guys thanks for a fantastic video...can i suggest going to Cyprus....I ve been to feytiye and olu deniz....everything is better in protaras....beaches...people...and you don't get pestered constantly....yes turkey is cheaper but price isn't everything....try protaras or Ayia napa....take care x

Been to Dalyan, Ichmeler and Marmaris in recent years and booked next 2 years too, the prices having been rising steadily as has every other country.
We are planning on buying a place in Marmaris eventually but keeping a close eye on costs

Turk here, they are actually bragging about how they charged you x10 the normal price. It's cheaper to get a sandwich in Berlin than it is to get one in Marmaris now! Don't let yourself be scammed

just a heads-up then, in jade a bottle of efes is 100tl. it's 32tl in the supermarket if youre interested, and jade don't pay supermarket prices.

Depends on location. Before you go in any restaurant it's better to check Google review and after go there to avoid from any ripped off. Unfortunately ripped off the customers is too common not only in Turkey as elsewhere especially in coastline zones.

I was in Fethiye this summer with my family in July/ August. 1 scoop ice cream was 30tl• in my Home Town it was 5tl
Çarıklı Restaurant was our favourite. Tasty food reasonably priced. Highly recommend

We found it very very Reasonable in Calis, Ovacik and Hisaronu, Olu Deniz was Expensive. 30 TL A Pint in some bars /Cafe's in Calis, Our Hotel had reasonable prices too, Club E , Brilliant family run Hotel near the Water Taxi's. We will be back next year in September for 3 weeks again. Lovely Video, Trudie likes her Grub.
I have always eaten in the back streets just to save that little bit towards the next Efes beer , the food is just the same quality and the staff just as friendly cheers guys..
Efes is cheap but a bitter tasting malt beer.
Well, Turkiye has economical crises, it is not only about prices for tourists. Everything became expansive.
This year has been brutal with prices going through the roof almost everywhere in the world except probably in energy rich countries. Winter will be even tougher.
Beer has only went up 20p a pint in two years, where I live. Cans in the supermarket have rocketed up by a pound for an 18 pack. That's around 5.5p per can.

When I went in February, despite the prices doubling in some cases, the exchange rate was around 20Tl - £1, many things were actually cheaper!

Yes it’s not just Turkey, in the UK prices have shot up astronomically, and in Canada and most of Europe they say the same thing about their governments
