Coxwell Ave, Gerrard St. Pape Ave, Ossington Ave, Balliol St. You could also describe how certain neighbourhoods got their names (the non-obvious ones). Keep up the good work, Morgan.
I would love to know the history behind Baby Point (pronounced bahby) in Bloor West Village, as well as streets like Strachan and Queens Quay. There is so much history in this town and I love learning all about it.
Cummer named after Jacob Cummer (originally spelled Kummer, likely German origins), an early settler. There is still a family graveyard on Yonge St. near Church.
Ah man, hooked from the first video. Keeps getting better and better, which is hard to improve on greatness! So c'mon everybody who watched, enjoyed and learned a bunch. Hit those buttons and raise a loud HUZZAH! Promise vintage photos of Richview Side Road and Martingrove, to be eventually sent.
You say Yonge was named by Lt-Gov John Simcoe after George Yonge - so far, so good. But you say it was named in 1847. Tricky, since Simcoe died in 1806, and Yonge in 1812. Apparently it was named in 1793, during Simcoe’s service in then-Upper Canada
Naming a street means assigning a legal name to the street. This is the name used for addressing and emergency response identification. Renaming a street means changing the existing legal name of the street. To rename a street, 75% of residents surrounding the street must provide support through a petition, letter, or email. City Council may waive this requirement if the criteria in Section 8.1 of the Street Naming Policy (opens in new window) have been met - meaning if the current legal name of the street is problematic. Ceremonial naming assigns a secondary name to a street that already has a legal name. Ceremonial names are symbolic and usually honour a person, event or organization. Such names do not replace the legal name of the street. Where is the Paperwork for DUndas Square, noonw in the world is perfect and stayuing with the name is a reminder instead of erasing history.
Sheppard Ave., like many streets in North York, is named after early settlers and landowners of the area. In some of the newer neighbourhoods, developers named streets after their kids!
The many neighborhoods in Scarborough and North York, like Wexford, Agincourt, Maryvale, parkwoods, Donalda and the biggest huhwhat?!? Tam O'Shanter Sullivan. Grew up in these neighborhoods and always had these questions about why are they are call this 😂
