I miss, miss, MISS the wonderful planetarium. I am SO grateful that I, at least, had the opportunity to enjoy it. My children, on the other hand, were cheated out of one of Toronto's BEST resources and it was devastating to learn that it was closing

Heart breaking to lose this gem in Toronto. The Hayden Planetarium in NYC is a top attraction but apparently we're not up to it. Sad.

The famed projector there was dismantled and sold off in parts to various places. I loved going there. I remember it as being a place for adults, not kids. That was how I was brought up, to go to places to think maturely with adults, like the ROM and AGO. Now, IMO we have loud hyperactive play institutions preoccupied by making things "fun". I will never forget the Planetarium and all that I learned there as a child. I was in awe...

Great video. One of my most nostalgic Toronto sites. Inspired my love of space, curiosity, and exploration.

I've never been, never been inside Canada. But the music done by Mychael Danna has kept me close to this Planetarium. Lots of history and it is very sad to know what could happen.

So sad to hear. I used to be a member of the RASC in the 70's and early 80's and remember attending many meetings there.

Another interesting video! Keep these up please since our government clearly does not care about preserving our history.

I loved the planetarium and the laser shows to music, e.g. the 60s. Mike Harris is a fun vibe buzz kill. TBH there's a tonne of people my age who were born in the 70s who would love to see if a similar programme could be resurrected or upgraded.

I remember going on trips to this place as a kid in the 90s..It suck that kids nowadays couldn't enjoy The Fun and Experience like Places like this and like Ontario Place and such more.

Great to find this series of video histories. My father was a Project engineer with Stone and Webster for both the planetarium and the first TD bank tower which was tallest building in Toronto at the time. I have just subscribed.

As a kid, I thought of the McLaughlin Planetarium as the COOLEST building in the world, perhaps only rivaled by it's ROM neighbor right next door. I still remember attending an awesome show where I was first exposed to Black Holes. So sad. I miss this place, as well as the old peanut and chestnut vendors who used to occupy this area.

Mike Harris was and is still dirt. He is also arrogant and its his government that helped close our vaccine lab, which now re regret. I miss this place. AND its haunted.

I saw Laser Zeppelin there in 1985 as a teen. Long stoner hair, leather jacket, and smoking half a pack of DuMaurier's a day

The original shame goes to Mike Harris and the Conservatards for forcing it to close by not funding it. He is also the reason why Electricity in the Province is still over priced to this day. Like his Federal counter parts before and after him. Mulroney sold off Petro-Canada and we had to buy it back, then Harris sold Ontario Hydro and Ontario had to buy it back, The criminister Harper closed down the entire section of Canada Revenue that went after corporate tax cheats, only to transfer everyone there, who wanted to transfer, to the section, that was and is responsible for going after regular Canadians. That's right ! Criminister Harper stopped going after corporations who owed Canada hundreds of thousands or millions in taxes and Tripled the efforts to go after us regular Canadians.
WTF is it with Conservatards !?!? Ours are fucking bad but at least, not yet, are they as bad as the Republicunts in the states. As bad as the Conservatards and Republicunts are, the worst or should I say the fucking dumbest are the people who vote Conservatard or Republicunt in the states that aren't millionaires or billionaires. I mean it was just divulged that Besos and Amazon paid $0 in taxes last year because of all the Republicunt/Conservatards loop holes in the taxes that started with Nixon, then Reagan, through both Bushes and the worst of the worst Fat Donny, the orange griffter, Yet these fucking inbred morons keep voting for these disgusting greasy politicians who are just the worst fucking people on the planet.

I'm so sad that I and many people will never get to visit this place. I wasn't even aware we had a Planetarium in Toronto.
It's dumb that the Mayor at the time saw it wasn't worth maintaininging it. It would have been profitable now.
    Ahhh, I hate politics.

So depressing how the futuristic inspirations in Toronto have almost completely gone! Ontario Place, Ontario Science Center, and this! Now everything's been or being compromised, bastardized, or simply vaporized from existence. Toronto has literally become the true 'Dark City' that's forever modifying itself to entertain a mysterious few.

Pro tip: don't shoot with main lights, or in this case CGI light, behind your head. Also don't talk with your hands.

Why go political? Blaming anyone other than the ROM management is plain wrong. Mike Harris did not close this, the ROM board chose to make this the sacrificial goat to save their own priorities which were never space or the stars. Shame on you for taking the low road on this story. I've been there in its heyday, later for the laser shows and even for the Children's museum. I even took a night course in the basement on astronomy when it was still under the auspices of RASC. I know it well. I also know the ROM killed this. Look no further for the ultimate cause of its demise.
In fact, with solid management, this could reopen tomorrow and be a huge success. Pity.
I'd rather see that cyrstal-crap monstrosity on Bloor be demolished with the scrap metal sold to fund the planetarium's rebirth!! That would be a worthwhile endeavour! On two fronts lol.
