I grew up on Roncies from 1969 to the mid eighties. My mom owned a convenience store near Galley. Every day there was a new adventure for us kids...HighPark, Sunnyside, Lakeshore etc. Everyone really watched out for everyone. Another memorable landmark store was the Kresge's Department Store at Fern where the RBC now is. Sadly it does feel a little too gentrified now which is disappointing but part of reality I guess. Good work on the mini doc Morgan!
A good film- I live on Roncesvalles above a store. I understand that Constance, Geoffrey and Marion streets are named after O'Hara's children. Also, Roncesvalles in Europe in mentioned in the Hemingway story, "The Sun Also Rises." Another thing- the illuminated marquee at the Revue Cinema collapsed onto the sidewalk about 10-12 years ago after being loaded with snow. A shame it was never replaced. The marquee at the former Brighton theatre was dismantled because it was rusted out and ready to collapse.
Thanks for your delightful upload! My family still lives just off Roncesvalles. This area is a still a village where it is possible to enjoy life without having to leave the neighbourhood. It always has been an outstanding area for families. It is great to see the regeneration without destruction, such as Sunnyside Bathing Pavilion. That would be a great video to see, if you have not done one already. Would also love to see a video commemorating Sunnyside Station, which is a great historical loss to Toronto and the neighbourhood. Thanks again for your wonderful series! It makes my day!
Saw a few triple bill Bogie films back in the 70s at the Revue. Oh, and Herzog's early masterpiece, Nosferatu as well. I remember it well. My dad worked on Dundas just east of the bend and I think I have the tops of the buildings and telephone poles permanently imprinted in my memory from trips to his work.
I loved your video, very well done, I have thought about moving to Roncesvalles for a few years, this has made me decide to actually do it once Covid resolves. It is a really nice community and also safe. Plus I love the Polish festival and Polish culture. Thank you! I am gonna make the jump on 2021. :) Ps-- > JUST discovered your channel, I love Toronto and I think it is awesome to be able to learn about history of old Toronto this way, I will be checking out your other videos!
Been there done that. Loved it. Greeks were taking over by '80 attactched to the very foot of the street. Best restaurant remembered, a cooking kitchen in the middle of a crowded dining area (name lost to old memory). Walked in pointed at what ever and all Greek mystery was soon delivered to an indulging table . Worked for unilingual Anglos and believed new Greeks liked civilized Canadians and did them no wrong. All probably old ghosts now as I soon may be.
I'm Canadian I live in New York and 82 as a child I lived at Dundas and and I'm Dufferin Street and I'll be moved up to Foresthill pretty fascinating to see all this history thanks a lot for doing this
I used to work for Habitat for humanity and we always picked up the coolest things from that area. Original homes with minimal gentrification. Nice! The people were always generous and very different from them folks in the beaches.
Thanks for the video, I like history of Toronto abd this vid is an ooportunity for me to discover The Revue movie theater, I'll go check it out soon (besides, would be nice to have the year overlaid for the B&W pictures)
I first faoud you when I saw the video that you did about the history of Ontario Place. Have you ever done one about the Beaches and some of the unique parks like the glen stewart ravine (big changes of the years) and other beaches landmarks like the fox theatre and the GOOF and oh the Leuty Lifegaurd station..... Another story idea would be the history of the Ontario Science Centtre or the TTC/Subway
Rondun -run down-. Tavern at the north end, Edgewater Hotel at the bottom by the bus station. Used to call it Raunchy-valles. Of course the Sir Nicholas Tavern added some class.
I grew up in Scarborough, but my mum grew up in Regent Park and went all over Toronto growing up. I grew up pronouncing it like "Roncinvail". I apologise.

Used to call in to Movie Phone and they always pronounced Roncesvalles as Roncaviya😂
You didn't show The Lakeview Lunch diner, unchanged for 100 years.
Lakeview is in Little Portugal at Dundas and Ossington - 10+/- blocks East of Ronces.
