Loved football and everything about it in those times,...the muddy pitches ,the luke warm tea at half time , and getting soaked with rain and sleet in the terraces while cheering on your team,.....,.....even the grounds had their own quirkiness and heritage , ...now stadiums today are soulless bowls lacking, identity, nostalgia or atmosphere....it was the little imperfections that at made it the game I grew up to love,...the game now is a money obsessed, over sanitized business , with perfectly manicured pitches and money grabbing players and their agents......it's as if the soul as been wripped out of football I grew up to....more's the pity

I have just realised that in 1981 both Granada's Match Time and London Weekend's The Big Match used the same theme tune, by Jeff Wayne of War or the Worlds fame.
"Aston Villa are still there" said Ray Clemence, referring to the title challenge... they sure were. ...champions!! Media darlings,Ipswich finished second!
On 'The Big Match' that season, upto Christmas it was a 75 minute programme, including and breaks, a d there were three ad breaks during the programme. After Christmas, the programme was reduced to 60 minutes - 'The Big Match' Classified' segment was dropped - and there would then only be two ad breaks during each programme. The programme also tended to be aired at 10.00 or 10.15pm after Christmas, when it had mostly been 10.30pm upto Christmas.
Yeah well said Lou ...your words have came back to bite you in the arse..city have taken over utd and utd haven't won P.L.for9 years and a single trophy for 5years ..don't bother going on about city and champions League it's old news we got more chance of winning it these days than rags ever will.manchester is blue ...
We are starting to watch this from the season after this but itv4 seem to try chop it to pieces to add more adverts which is a real shame and we expect more from our commercials stations or send it to BT sport who aren’t obsessed by adding adverts where they don’t fit
Lou Macari moaning about bias and then doing his MUFC apologetic 101. City may never eclipse Utd, unless they start winning Champions leagues, but the balance has shifted and post 2013 Utd have not found the solution. Still, Ollie's at the wheel.
Mediocre run club now utd top7 side at best ..city are at least 3/4 years ahead of the rags now ..it's going to be a long haul for utd now so take it and keep crying watching city dominate English football for a long time ...
The half-time break was very uncomfortable viewing 😂 Poor Ray Clemence was sitting there in total silence while Elton Welsby ignored him and went through his script.
Disappearing when The Match no longer appeared on terrestrial TV, cos a certain greedy Australian media oligarch bought football's soul for £340M. Now, you couldn't even interest a fat greedy Cockney oligarch into selling his shitty sports business sponsored tormented football club in Tyneside for that amount. Even as a Geordie myself, I wouldn't say they're worth 30 pieces of silver, not until that fat turd dies anyway....... The game needs less Ashleys and Murdochs. However borderline the finances of clubs were 40years ago, the games were gutsy, the supporters had passion (they didn't go just to stuff their faces with sh**e and swipe their phones) & you were a fan with a simple bobble hat or scarf, not a £60 shirt that will be obselete in under 12months. Betting didn't dominate the game so much either and players felt a loyalty to stay, plus managers were given more respect, not looking like they would get the push after three or four defeats. Managers had the flashier cars back then, now it's players in bloody Ferraris and Lambos.... RIP football ⚽1888-1992 🍻 Murdered by 💰💰💰
@paul smith how's that comment panning out? Euro Champs, World Champs and even Chinese treachery can't stop us being worthy English champs. The tide has turned, suck it up buttercup.

I got sooo many stickers of Ainscough in this season, it was unreal!! If I remember rightly, there was uproar over the red tripe on the ball. :o
What a theme song brings the memories rushing back
"Aston Villa are still there" said Ray Clemence, referring to the title challenge... they sure were. ...champions!! Media darlings,Ipswich finished second!
Best theme music ever!!
That was the Fastest Goal Assist I have seen ... That too from a Goalkeeper ... Well Done Gary Bailey ... 😜
Liverpool in a run of scoring just 4 goals in 8 games from Dec to Feb, and the one on this day was an OG.
Great music by Jeff Wayne
By that point the ITV regional shows had only one ad break and moved it to after the 2nd match from half time in the main match

Gordon McQueen was such an underrated player for us at United
Mr Kipling I seriously think Dave Sexton should have been given more time at United.

"Andy Gray scored in Wolves' 2-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion.", how is that possible?
