      I'm not sure that the data was collected correctly. I don't know. Did they power brake the Dodge? If they did the revs would have been higher and the torque higher.
      I don't get the joy of driving an electric motor. I've only ever driven electric Karts so what do I know. They were quick but "soulless".
      As I've said before, I hope when electric cars are the norm, self driving will be too. That way I won't have to drive.

    Great video! I would love to see a final chart with 0-30, 0-60, and quarter mile times if you have them. Maybe even distance traveled by second for each car each second up to 10 seconds. (OK, I'm a numbers geek...) But the g-force profiles are fascinating in themselves.

      Paul Ott You can get more details (and stare at graphs) at the article on the consumer reports website. It's on the front page for now. 0-30 for the Tesla and Dodge were given as 1.3 and 2.3 seconds respectively.
      I'm always wanting more, just like you. I've always really wanted to see a graph of the _jerk_ of the P85D, along with a variety of other cars.

      Dan Troop Not really. They could have used an older P85+ with RWD and result will be similar. The electric motors are able to deliver 100% torque right off the bat, where the hellcat engine/transmission needs time to rev up to its full torque. If Tesla fitted a transmission, even if just 2 speeds, it will blow away Hellcat at top speed as well.

    • @Antenox
      @Antenox 9 років тому +1

      Dan Troop That helps traction, which prevents the car from spinning out its wheels, but if the back wheels had enough traction, then it wouldn't really matter if it was AWD vs RWD.

    • @paulwesterberg
      @paulwesterberg 9 років тому +3

      Dan Troop better traction is part of it, but electric motors provide max torque at 0rpm so the motor doesn't have to spin up the 2-3k rpm before providing good power. Electric motors are like the opposite of turbo lag.

    • @turbo_s
      @turbo_s 9 років тому +1

      Also because in the Model S, all the power and torque is available at launch, whereas in gas engines, you have to wait for it to build power.

  • @Ramb1t0
    @Ramb1t0 9 років тому +6

    U did not explain how the acceleration dramatically drops off in the tesla but the hellcat keeps pulling harder when you get pass 40mph. Basically the tesla is only faster to 40. Any where from 40 to 200 mph the tesla will loose badly. I think this is not telling the full story. I feel bad for people buying this car think they can beat a hellcat. Quarter mile trap speed tells the story. But I will say 0 to 30 it's the fastest car I have ever driven it's almost worth it just for that. But I would take a 4 door Charger Hellcat over it any day and save a lot of money.

    Any plans on doing this for the ludicrous P90D? I'd love to see how long it can sustain the 1 to 1.1 g's compared to the "old and slow" insane mode... From what I hear the top end is not that much higher but because of the new fuse, it is more precisely controlled and able to sustain it for a longer amount of time. I think many owners and those considering one would really like to see how they compare.. Thanks for the awesome video btw.

    Haven't read all the 472 previous comments, so someone else may have already pointed this out. When you say "...one to measure acceleration and the other to measure the G forces..." you are saying you same thing twice. The actual name of a G-meter is an accelerometer. It measures acceleration in a given plane or axis.

  • @aWhiskeyTangoFoxtrot
    @aWhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 9 років тому +3

    a couple of things to consider.
    when you look at range...the Hellcat still has better range. It won't take hours to fill the tank full of fuel. It is a proven technology, it won't loose range in cold weather, it sounds like a muscle car, it looks cool, and it won't have to have a very expensive batter pack replaced eventually.

      Christian_Patriot The tesla will require half as much maintenance as the hellcat. I'm sure the cost to replace the engine/transmission on the hellcat won't be cheap. Not to mention the gas cost. Seriously, how often do you go on trips longer than 270 miles?

    • @bebomac5
      @bebomac5 9 років тому +5

      Actually, the range is similar in both. FYI, Tesla Superchargers supply an 80% charge in as little as 20 minutes, and are FREE to use. Perhaps you should learn some facts before commenting.

    • @paulott4842
      @paulott4842 9 років тому +2

      Christian_Patriot Your sentiments are neither Christian nor Patriotic. I'm sure you know that less than 0.5% of U.S. electricity comes from oil. I'm sure you also know that it takes less than an hour to fill a Tesla's battery, and less than 30 minutes to get 2-hours of highway range. I think you're afraid that cars that use American fuel (Natural Gas, Coal, Nuclear, Hydro, Solar, Wind, etc) will end the funding of your extremist friends.
      I'm pretty sure "Christian_Patriot" is a handle meant to disguise your intentions. You should probably be called "Islamic_Extremist", because you apparently love sending your fuel money to OPEC extremists. And by lying about Tesla taking 'hours to fill the tank' you want us all to do the same. Also, the Tesla has an 8-year Unlimited Mile warranty on battery and powertrain. The Hellcat? 5 years/100.000. Tesla? Made in USA. Challenger? Made in Canada. Again, the Tesla is better, and American-made and American fueled.

    AWD versus RWD. The Tesla's G curve falls like a rock, while the Hellcat holds it's Gs much longer. I bet with perfect traction, the hellcat would pull higher Gs. But in stock form, the Tesla wins. For the price of the P85D, I can buy both Hellcats and run 10.80s with DRs. I'll take the Hellcat any day over the Tesla. Also, is the Tesla's top speed 200? What does the exhaust sound like in the Tesla? Hellcat is a monster, a total visceral experience, can't beat it with batteries.

    • @lHaZzeRecon
      @lHaZzeRecon 9 років тому +1

      dobbins2550 Tesla is limited to 130 MPH, it has an RPM limit. Plus it only has one gear, it can only spin so fast. Hellcat, has EIGHT. 200 MPH, 205+ in the charger hellcat. Tesla would win at first, then the hellcat would destroy it.

      Silas Belshnickel Agreed, but you will have Tesla nut huggers and Dodge fanboys argue all day long.
      I love new tech, but G Force only matters around turns. The P85D is a one trick pony. While it is incredibly fast to 60 (which is awesome when it throws you in the seat) you can actually buy a Hellcat Charger, upgrade the tires and be faster to 60 in a RWD car that is half the cost.

    Just saw this. Both vehicles are impressive. The problem is this: you touted the "insane" mode of the Tesla and didn't even show what key you used for the Hellcat. The Hellcat with the red key unleashes the full 707 hp and gets you into the programming in the electronics for customizing your experience...this video shows you may be partial to the Tesla, instead of being objective of the whole test. And for the record the Hellcat is probably cheaper than the P85D...even with the bogus upcharges the dealers add to it because it is a must have vehicle! I will not deny the P85D is impressive, but, do a cost analysis of both and a range test (tank vs battery) THAT would be awould be a great test. The test should be with the "insane" button and the Red Key for levity. Take it on a track and see how long they last.

    Pretty fail video TBH. You failed to bring up that a lot of the difference has to do with 4WD vs. 2WD. A more apt comparison to understand the difference between electric car acceleration and ICE acceleration would be a GTR or something with 4WD and good launch control that can actually hook up. While the instantaneous torque of an electric car is great off the line the hell cat with similar power figures pulled significantly harder after the initial traction limited period ran out. Since a ICE car can stay in it's peak power/ torque band due to gearing (Tesla has only 1 gear) an ICE with the same power/torque will generally be faster in the quarter mile when driving all 4 wheels.

    All this technology is great and battery power and electric motors have come a long way but one thing will never change about battery power. It takes 1 to 2 minutes to refill a fuel tank but a few hours to charge a battery. The power is the same in the Hellcat from a full tank all the way to empty. Electric loses power with each pull. Put an electric car on a Nascar track and see how long it keeps up with a gasoline powerplant. I bet it gets lapped big time

It's said that what ever all wheel drive horse power/ torque can be matched by rear wheel drive however you need double the horse power of the all wheel drive to catch/ stay with it and if your lucky surpass them. With the rear wheel drive if you have good traction with the rear wheel drive you can keep up with and them and if it's got a great traction for the whole shot semi outperform the all wheel drive..

    This kind of review is FAR better than Dragtimes bullshit and bias review. The Hellcat off the line is so shitty probably due to the tire width. However, it'll hook up at higher speed due to more power transformed to speed.

    • @DTRU122283
      @DTRU122283 9 років тому +2

      LAUNCH CONTROL 東瀛戰神 Lol, 0-60 in 3.4 seconds in a RWD 4,500+ lb car is not even close to shitty. You are correct that it is hindered by the tire width. 275's on a 700hp vehicle is a poor choice.
      Change the tires and now your RWD vehicle is faster to 60 than an AWD "instant torque" vehicle, for half the price.

    Amazing how, when they compare the graphs at 03:48 you see how smooth the Tesla runs in comparison to the Hellcat's engine. Drives away like a fucking surgical knife. This is why electric cars should be made and sold more instead of resisting to change of the motor industry. If I could, I'd change my beloved R32 today!

    The Tesla will overheat with repeated runs. The Tesla is a fast car, but cannot get rid of the heat from the inverter/engine with heavy repeated use. Just take the Tesla onto any track and watch it go into limp mode after a few laps. from t he heat. Fast car, but not with repeated runs at full throttle. I have driven a Hellcat, so I can only speculate how it will do with repeated runs or on the track.

  • @Leviathan81X

    Tesla's quick, but it's advantage is only for the first 1/8th of mile. After that point, it's lack of additional gearing (doesn't it have 1 gear) prevents it from continuing it's acceleration, hence the immediate drop in g-forces and steady decline.....not to mention that if you do more than a couple quarter mile runs, you're outta juice and have to charge for a couple hours before you can drive home. I want to admire it, but until a re-charge only takes 5 minutes, can't see it being anything more than a novelty for the rich.

    Is the better aspects of the Tesla worth another $60.000 dollars? These kinds test are some what bogus. Outside of just plain heads up run what you brung drag racing all the cars are matched pretty well. An example would be cars with electronics don't run in the same class as cars without. Weight, engine size, fuel delivery systems, naturally aspirated vs forced induction and tire size. So I say comparing a $120K car to a $65K car is a little skewed would you think? Plus the only somewhat common thing between the two is there are both cars and that's about it.
