Thank you the scientist and the doctors who made this technology possible. Thank you the family who helped by staying by her side and helping her through everything. I look forward to when more and more people are as fortunate. How many humans suffered deafness for hundreds of thousands of years? Now things are starting to change because we humans got smarter.
what Roar means is that somebody who is born deaf does not see himself as any less gifted or in soem way handicapped. they can make sense of the world around them without sound. as such they dotn experience any negative things concerning not beign able to hear, and thus, dont think of themselves as suffering. from our standpoint not being able to hear is a tremendous hindrance so naturally we call it suffering.
Roar They do in the wild when compared to hearing humans, sure you can be deaf and function normally in today's society, but you are still disadvantaged. I would say that always being like a foreign language speaker in your ow language is a shit situation.

I am a certified interpreter. My feelings are that her parents should love and accept her as she is, in totality. Certain things needed to be "fixed" like cleft lip, so she could survive. Deafness is not a death sentence. She could have thrived without the implant. I do not agree with implanting a child who is too young to understand all the ramifications that I understand about this. After implantation, she is NOT then a hearing person. If something goes wrong with the implant or the processor is knocked off or is broken, or when she takes it off, she still can't hear. The sounds she hears with it on are unnatural, like a robot. Since she has NEVER heard before, she does not immediately understand the sounds she hears, nor where they come from. She has to learn all this. It takes at least a year of healing from the surgery to even be able to start the training, which then takes more years. Some implant surgeries are "successful" and some are not. Parents are not usually told about all things that can go wrong and be a struggle for her. It's not accurate for the reporter to say she hears with her brain. We all do. It's the brain that sends the signals. That's a silly statement. When they turn on the processor, her mother signs to her what is being said. She can't understand it herself yet, by far.
