How tough and hardy can a palm tree be?
    Palm pruning and repotting.
In this video I show how much abuse a European Fan Palm, Chamaerops humilis can put up with and still survive, making it one of the best palms for a low maintenance UK garden.
12+ years in the same pot
    2 weeks sub zero
down to minus 10 degrees centigrade
10 months with no pot or watering
    roots severed
Amazing what this palm can cope with and survive!

That palm is hard as nails. Old school tough love given to it. Love it 😁👍

I rescued my severely neglected palm last week , it looked far worse than yours, so hoping it’s now happier and will thrive! Pretty much did what you demonstrated apart from sawing the roots. Fingers crossed

If it was pot grown it'll be fine. Dug from the ground is a little less certain but has a good chance

This palm would be much happier in the ground rather than in a pot!

As with any plant, Yes but this is one of the most adoptable palms and one of the best options for a pot. The other one is in the ground

A lovely palm, but why are they so prone to black spots on older leaves?

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS  Місяць тому

Cold wet winters is the main cause. Some specimens are far more prone than others

I have a few trackys a bit larger that Id like to put in the ground.
When i dig the holes would you add fertilizer at this time of year mid August? And would you tease the roots out or not disturb the roots. I live in the same climate as you.

@regalportraits3921 I wouldn't disturb the roots for use a strong fertiliser. Seaweed extract is a very week fertiliser that promotes roots growth so good to use

How tall can this palm grow Kris ? Also, do you cut away the shoots it produces ? I'm thinking of getting one, but I'm aware it throws out new shoots. Thanks.

About 10/12 cm a year. It's unusual to see specimens taller than 3 or so metres but are mostly multi trunked
