      Great video Burke. I am Sean in Oceanside CA and I have a sago palm that is about 4 years old. The fronds on the top of the tree are vibrant and healthy but the fronds on the lower tier are a mixed bag. Some are green but others are brown and green. I water once a week and added fertilizer. I cut off some of the worst of the fronds on the bottom tier. Should I cut off ALL the fronds on the bottom tier? Will they grow back? Thanks for your advice.

    That is a beautiful plant, and you did a great job! But I'm thinking that that area could use some sort of ground cover? Or at least some mulch. If bromeliads grow in your area, they would look amazing with the sago, and/or some sort of small, spreading succulent. Of course that would be the owners decision.

    Great video. Love Sago’s but cannot seem to keep them alive here in the UK! I’ve had several now and seem to die off over winter. I realise I should have wrapped them up with hessian or cover the crown to stop the snow/frost or take them inside. I’ve still kept the trunks in hope they’ll grow back this year after cutting off the yellow/brown fonds but not hopeful

      Hi Mark, I have not had to deal with Sagos and extreme cold here in California. I can imagine the problems it can cause. I think I might try putting a bunch of mulch or straw in the crown area during the freezing season. The fronds will probably freeze and turn brown anyway but at least the new growth would come back…. I hope. Thank you for the comment and appreciate you watching the channel.

    Good job! We have 2 sagos in our front yard that are 40 + years old. My parents bought the home brand new and planted the sagos when they were tiny. One is about 15 foot tall and the other around 10 to 12 feet. The 15 foot sago’s trunk has become distorted near the top with what appears like tumors. It is healthy, but we do not like the shape it is taking on at the top. Have you ever dealt with this type of issue?

    • @burkefranklin1
      @burkefranklin1  Рік тому +2

      That weird shape can happen , the weirdest was one that looked like a fan shape at the top and started to send off fronds straight up towards the sky ( the entire top almost turned sideways). I could not help that owner since it would require shaving the living part of the plant with a chainsaw, and that would have looked just as bad. Wish I could see it in all its weirdness !! Thanks, Burke

    Thanks! I learned a lot. I have a male and a female next to each other, and trim them myself because the "gardeners" in my area aren't really experts. What do I do with a male sago that has a huge side growth (basketball size) at the top? I can't let it grow because it blocks the public sidewalk. Can I take it off without killing the plant? Also, the top appears to be growing in about 2 or 3 divisions. A quandary!

    • @burkefranklin1
      @burkefranklin1  2 роки тому +2

      I’m not sure I understand but tell me if I got it. Sounds like the male sago has either a cone growing from the top (happens every couple years or so off white in color) or you are saying the sago has decided to split into a multi headed plant. Usually this is a cool thing but if the new heads “growth” are going to eventually block a pathway then you will need to remove the arm. It will leave a scar on the plat but it should be fine. These plants are very hardy… it might surprise you that a sagos trunk can be cut all the way through and then planted. After a couple years it will begin to grow again (I’m talking about the top half that was cut down!!). Let me know if I got it right.. thanks for watching.
      Burke

    • @OneHighwayWalker
      @OneHighwayWalker 2 роки тому +1

      @@burkefranklin1 Thank you so much for replying! It's become a multi-headed plant with one growth going in the wrong direction only because it was originally planted to close to the sidewalk. I'm glad I can remove the arm without killing the plant. It's put out cones every year for the past several years, but none this year. The irony is that this is the first year the female has put out seeds. So no cone to fertilize the seeds. :( And none of my neighbors' males have put out cones either! Again, thank you for your help.

    • @burkefranklin1
      @burkefranklin1  Рік тому +1

      Hi George, I am guessing you want to preserve the “pups”… I have used shovels and crowbars to separate them. I would start by removing a good 6 inches of dirt around the pup to give more ability to push and pull the pup. Once you have removed it, make sure to leave the hole open so that the mother plants wound can dry for a few days. Once dry you can fill in the dirt. Thanks for watching,

    Wow! This is my 1st time watching you and your work... You're wonderful. But, I'm frustrated at myself for not finding you sooner!
    I was gifted a beautiful 15yr. old Sego over 10 years ago. The owner had experience with them and had always grown his, in wooden landscape containers. He said it was time to repot it... and he told me the basic needs.
    I was always scared I may harm it, but transplanted it, for no other reason than anesthetic and the fact that those containers always leach the soil out... so I placed it into a 30" terra cotta pot, as I thought I would eventually move.
    However, here I still am, and now I wish I would have placed it into the ground.🙄
    However, these amazing plants are very valuable at this age, and I didn't want to lose this generous gift... to porch pirates.
    Can you please give me your opinion on the proper ratio of soil mix for these precious long-lived plants? I live in Apple Valley, CA. 92307, but they say 8a-9 (or sunset zone 11?) 🤔 I have a lot of caliche, as this used to be a lake bed area.
    I need to get a soil test, but I thought I'd ask 🤔 as there are other plants in my area, but they don't look too well 🧐. Thank you, Sir, for your service to others😇, your camara work is very enjoyable as well, and I'm a subscriber now, too! Thank you, and God bless 🙏🥰🤗
    Ps. I was the adoption person for years with Ca. Dept. Of Fish and Game and had tortoises 🐢 personally. The sego plants and their seeds are indeed poisonous to the Sulcata, as well as all tortoise species and Thank you for mentioning that to the owner!!! 😊

      Thank you for watching and enjoying! I am happy that you value your Sago like you do. I am actually in the middle of editing a video on transplanting a sago from the yard to a pot. This video may be helpful to you, I will try and get it out quickly. As I mention in my upcoming video, these plants are very hardy, so don’t be scared to dive into your project. No need to try and save a large root ball. If you ever decide to remove it from the large 30” container, just trim the roots way way back and put into a smaller pot…. Or put it into the ground needing a much smaller hole. How tall is the trunk alone ?
      By the way I had a sulcata tortoise 50lbs that got sick and died … very sad. Thanks again for watching.

    Why didn’t you remove the pups?

      The homeowner was not sure if they wanted them removed. Would you have removed them? It is a matter of taste. Thank you for watching and for asking the question. See you again .

    Is there a certain time of season to cut them or does it matter?

    • @burkefranklin1

      Thanks for the question Christina. Most of my Sagos have new fronds about the same time. I almost always do my trimming just after the new fronds have come up but are not fully open. That is just my preference. I don’t think it matters that much.
      Hope to hear from you on another video.

    Why not take some of those pups off you could transplant them then resale them in a garage sale some day .

      Thanks Ben but I have to limit my free work to just the Sago, otherwise I am afraid I would have to ad ground cover, up lighting and the list goes on. I appreciate the comment and agree that would be nice. 👍 Burke

      If it were me, I would removed the pups leaving only two large pups towards the wall, it would look nicer and cleaner.

      Thanks for watching David. I really don’t like to call the seed pods fruit because it makes them sound yummy… removing the seeds and the flower at any stage of growth will not hurt the plant. I have never heard of cats consuming these seeds so not sure I can answer that question. I think these pods have different effects on different pets. Example: I had sagos 30 years ago and did not know they were poisonous… my puppy would chew up the pups and play with the seed pods, he never became sick. I was lucky I guess. Better to be safe for sure. I hope you are subscribed and I hear from you again. Burke

    I think I don't want a sago palm! We brought one back from Florida to our home in TN. Had to keep it in a pot so we could bring it in for winter. And bring it out for spring. Ours is about 15 or more years old and just this year she had pups. And hasn't bloomed yet but I don't think I want to deal with that. I promised it to a friend but I wonder if she will want it after she finds out all the difficult characteristics involved. They are beautiful, but need to be in the ground.

      Hi Franny, these plans make great potted plants. I have a number of them in pots and they always make me smile. Hope you can keep it and if not …. A friends home is almost as good. Thanks for watching my video.

      @jc2604 Sir, with all due respect... some of us are still learning... and he answers many questions about the plants as he goes along... that we would have to ask here otherwise in this format.
      I'm sure you can appreciate that his time is valuable, and responding takes a great deal more of his time, and yet, he appears to do that as well... and most don't!
      This gift he is giving us all for free mind you, isn't something... to take for granted, Sir.
      So, please, just enjoy the ride... and
      God bless 🙏🇺🇲
