The actual title is "The Irish Went Down to New Orleans". It was released by Dawg Records and performed by "The Charlie Spaniels Band". Produced by Howard Lovett. I have a copy of the original 45.
I'm a big Sooner fan and I had the privilege to have dinner with Steve and Bob Kelly the night before the game. Two of the finest men I've ever met in my life. Sam Pittman and I played together in high school. We almost won it all in 1979. I'll be rooting for the Dawgs!!
Bob and Steve Kelly also had a beautiful sister named Ann. She was a cheerleader at UGA the same year Bob and Steve Kelly also beat ND for 1980 NCAA National Championship. They were great people cuz they had great parents. I knew them from grade school through high school. Use to shoot basketball in their driveway when I was just a little kid. Steve was a little fast running back and started as running back til STUD Herschel came to Athens. What great times those were being a teenager listening to Larry Munson radio broadcaster for the DAWGS! Thanks Bob and Steve for the memories. GORO
This is a song recorded and performed by Howard Lovett, a singer and record producer who at the time lived in Dublin, GA, now I think he lives in Augusta, GA. Banjo played by Trent Howard of Dublin, GA
I have been looking for this song for 30 years! I have been telling my children about it and now they know mama is not crazy , There really was a song about the 1980 team,
Scott...here's a treat for you. I just uploaded the entire 1980 National Championship tape I have on to UA-cam. It's under my videos. Just click on my name. It's got several of Herschel's long runs. Enjoy!
Scott...well, you have to remember, ESPN was in it's infancy then, so there wasn't a ton of footage from the game. Plus, you have guys like Mark May working at ESPN who absolutely refuse to give any credit to that Georgia team (May played for Pitt that year and STILL argues that they should have played Notre Dame instead of Georgia, despite the fact that they lost a game earlier in the season). Check how many records Walker still has standing. His 3-year rushing record has never been approached.
Cool. I have a lot of respect for Notre Dame and their long and rich tradition. I some times get into debates about running backs and of course Herschel is my favorite. When I google him, I'm amazed at how few clips I can find of him doing well against worthy opponents. The Irish were really good that year (obviously) so to make my point, I wanted to show some of his plays from this game and based on what I could find, you'd never know we ever played a game. Thanks again.
Bama fan here but this was awesome! You can better believe I wanted them Dawgs to beat the Irish that Night! I was only 13 years old at the time and Notre Dame had beaten us 7-0 that year at Legion Field but by golly, the south rose again!
Scott...I got this footage from an old VHS tape of the hi-lites of Georgia's 1980 season. I'll be posting it in it's entirety soon. My dad got the tape sometime around 1984. I have definitely seen this game replayed on ESPNU several times, though. In fact, I may have recorded it. I'll check my archives.
AWESOME! Where did you get this footage? I have searched for years for footage of this game, particularly of Herschel and all I can find is him running over Bill Bates. It's like that's the only thing he ever did. Did Notredame buy the rights to the footage or something?
I would like to hear the 2021 version, someone sent me the words, but can’t find it with music. “The Dawgs went down to Georgia they were looking for a Trophy to steal..they were in a bind, they were way behind, something like 41 years…they came across a Young man throwing a football and throwing it hot…so the Dawgs jumped on a microphone and said “Boy let me tell you what” I guess you didn’t know it but we’re the Top Ranked team, and if you care to take a dare I’ll make a bet with you..now your a pretty good football team but give these Dawgs their due, I’ll bet a Ring of Gold against your soul i think I’m better than you- Well The GOAT said “my names Saban and it might be a sin, but I’ll that bet, you’re gonna regret because I’m the Best That’s Ever Been” The dawgs opened up the score and said “we’ll start this show’ - fire flew from their fingertips when they were up 10 to 0- in the stands you heard their fans, it sounded like an evil hiss..turned out it was just them Dawgs fixing to be pissed.. When the Dawgs scored, Saban said “you’re pretty good ole son, but sit DOWN there you just lost you’re pair- I’m gonna show you how it’s done” Fire on the Mountain- Roll Tide Roll- Bama’s in the Dome that we always own..Dawgs in the stands losing their dough..Kirby does your Dawg bite…NO CHILD NO! The Dawgs bowed their head because they KNEW that they’d been beat..and they laid that Title down at Sabans feet..and Saban said just come on back if you ever want to try again…that’s 7 in a ROW I’m THE BEST THATS EVER BEEN!
COASTALDRIFT48 YT However, the SEC Storied about Herschel Walker was inspiring and uplifting. He overcame a lot of obstacles. He's focused and determined.
Not a dawg fan not a dawg hater but I do love when Notre Dame gets beat kind of Ironic I found this video searching a Traditional Irish Song I can't remember the title of
