limgrave being the starting area carries the game's wonderful exploration so much. It's so diverse within itself while still having a clear and super interesting main path
In defense of the mountaintops... the scenery looks really really cool. If it was a Lords of the Ring-like montage of your character riding through it, it'd be impressive.
I hate this area so much. Mostly because of how much it destroyed the uniqueness and beauty of caleid like said in the video. Enjoy the dlc by the way!
In my first playthrough, I thought Limgrave was the entire world. Lol, I was amazed like, "Wow, a whole world for me to explore!" Then I stumbled across a map that revealed a piece of the world, and I suddenly realized that all the grayed out parts were more pieces of the world. Jaw fell to the floor, and I had to turn the game off. I was so overwhelmed that a Fromsoft game had SO much for me to run around in. I wish I could relive that moment again.
To me Weeping Peninsula gameplay wise feels like a beginner friendly starter area. It's a portion of Limgrave that houses a lot of great loot and easy encounters. Atleast compared to Stormveil starting with Margit. It does it's job really well on the 1st playtrough and challenge runs imo. I also have to give props to the thematic aspects of it. Everything from the naming to the environment tells a story about the cycle of revenge.
i feel like a great way they could have done it was to start you on the south east end of the lake so that you had the option to go towards weeping peninsula or stormveil castle
It's good since it's an area people that want to get stronger for Margit would go, and it has some interesting stuff and good enemy scaling, unlike Elphael where everything even at 60 vigor full bullgoat hit like trucks and it's filled and structured like an DS2 Gank area in term of enemies
Small correction - i'm pretty sure the dogs and birds of Caelid are in fact mutated normal animals. Their presence in mountaintops isn't just because they're some native lands between species, but rather indication that the rot has spread into the mountaintops as a result of Malenia resting in the Haligtree. Snowfields have a similar degree of corruption. Obviously the corruption in snowfields and mountaintops is much milder than in Caelid, but it's still there.
Scarlet rot doesnt mutate, It kills and rebirth you as something else. Im more inclined to belive those fuckers are simply scavengers, they are in too many places unrelated to rot
They are what they eat. The dogs and crows in Mountaintops are feasting on the dead giants, and you can see in Caelid there also large rotting skulls littering the hellish landscape. Rot notwithstanding, their mutations seem to have a lot to do with giants being a part of their diet from a young age
@@poly_g6068 Its not necessarily from eating giants, just eating too much - the crows are also in Mohgwyn. It makes sense, but it doesn't change that they felt like they were unique to Caelid, and its disappointing to see them elsewhere.
I actually like a good majority of mountaintops. It has a nice vertical layout with some cool encounters here and there (the ost is great as well). However, I agree that the frozen lake and flame peak portions of the zone, as well as the lack of new enemies bring it down a lot
@@thegodofsoapkekcario1970 honestly same. I think it's fine as is, but the final bit leading up to the fire giant is probably the lowest point in the game for me
@@cynvic1872I genuinely think that if they removed every single enemy in this section and just fully leaned on the visual aspect it would have made a great lead up to the fire giant
@thegodofsoapkekcario1970 which it could easily have, we know kaiden warriors, fire monks, trolls, Zamor knights come from this place. They appear before and have lore reasons behind it that are totally credible, but it would have been better to see the monks, kaiden warriors and zamor knights only in this region with some variations, keeping the snow trolls, and the region would have been even more interesting, and remove some enemies like the hands, the banished knights, the albinaurics, the misbegotten.
In my opinion Liurnia is the best region in elden ring. I have to admit that like you said it's way to MASSIVE! Besides that the area is awesome to look at and explore. When i first stepped outside Stormveil castle I could not belive my eyes when i saw a beautiful lake soraunded by really nice loking cliffs. And I LOVE how the whole time I was in the lake it felt like a Cthulhu monster was gonna jump out of the fog. I know raya lucaria is not a part of the region but it cannot be ignored. I personally find it really fun clearing out all the bosses in it while taking in the scenery. Also i should mention that you described Weeping Peninsula perfectly
I had a similar experience, and what contributed to it a lot was also realizing that there was that whole new area and the map had doubled. This felt amazing every time this happened in the game, because of course the map just kept growing
@@mihaimercenarul7467 It's just a very interesting location that raises questions. How long have these prisoners been here burning? Are they being kept as a quarantine or punishment? Who's behind the jail? Plus it's cool how it pops you out in a different region.
The very edge of weeping peninsula near the isolated merchant is one of my favorite areas in the game. You can hear the distant bell of the mausoleum and the expanse of the sea: it really feels like the edge of the world
i'm wondering if crumbling farum azula could have made it into this vid? feels big enough to be considered a region and not a legacy dungeon. loved the vid!
If you’re gonna combine all the underground areas you might as well combine other areas, like weeping peninsula with limgrave and snowfield with mountaintops
Dragonbarrow becomes a better region when you know where you’re going on subsequent playthroughs and can get the dectus medallion, radagon’s soreseal, the nights cavalry cheese, greyoll, greyll, and a putrid avatar on a single route for an absolute fat stack of early-game cash that will keep your levels comfortable until like Leyndell, and you can teleport there within the first hour of starting a new save (plus none of these bosses are too difficult relatively speaking), the pure convenience is great.
@@alexterieur8813A bare bones explanation off my memory is the people down there originally lived above ground and worshipped the sky, when they were banished down there they missed seeing the sky and basically made an artificial sky down there to mimic it
Consecrated snowfield just felt so empty to me, I feel like they obscured visibility to cover up for the lack of content. I have to say I prefer Mountaintop of the Giants, as it actually has some good exploration and also has the Fire Giant which was dope.
elden ring discourse be like : "if you reuse a low level boss as an ennemy later it automatically invalidates it for some reason" "what about asylum demon, taurus demon, moonlight butterfly and capra demon ? also if we count dark souls 2 reuses, what about Orstein and Gargoyles ?" "well no because reusing is only bad when it's done for secondary extra content I decided" "Doesn't it make it cool bonuses that allow you to test how strong you became or fight in a different environement to see how it impacts the gameplay ?" "Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah is bad cuz then it's not speeeeciiiiiial"
Tbh I think mountaintops is mediocre at least, decent at best, Yes, I agree the reuse of enemies isn’t the best, but at least they aren’t bad enemies, and its great visually (Which is not saying much since every other region besides gelmir and snowfield and better looking lmao) and I like the traversal of it with the chains and bridges
The consecrated snowfield makes me kinda sad tbh because it has the BEST ambience and atmosphere imo. I think there should have been a little more to this area, maybe a new enemy or something else to do and see here, i still like this region tho, the ost makes me feel melancholic and nostalgic.
@@skeb3199 Also thematic as hell, considering the Haligtree is a sanctuary for lost souls, and typically you're always lost before you are found, which the blizzard conveys beautifully
I honestly think its great as it is, and don't know why so many people dislike it. There's plenty of interesting stuff - navigating the blizzard, avoiding the Dragonkin spirits, dodging the electric orb things and runebears to get all the loot, the wolfriders, the frenzy trolls and yelough anix tunnel (one of the few really unique mines in the game, and easily the best one imo), the Mausoleum surprising you with magic artillery, and even though the Albinaurics aren't new its so long since you last fought them that I was happy to see them. I also (controversially) really like Ordina. The snowfields aren't as dense with content as the rest of the regions, but like Magicat said that works with the aesthetic/vibe. I do wish that Mohgwyn was connected in a more interesting way than just a standard waygate though.
Mountaintops used to be connected to Caelid... making the Lands Between form a Ring. Hence having the same enemies as Caelid, really fucking sick environmental storytelling. Still a lower tier area but no way does it make the game actively bad. Glad you're back making ER vids. Will top 10 Erdtree Avatars premiere before ER DLC releases?
But wouldnt that imply that the crows and dogs looking like that is normal? They look really fucked up, especially the dogs, and as magicat said seem to be a result of the rot in caelid, if they made normal giant dogs and crows then it would make sense and it would also be really amazing to walk through there and see normal versions of those enemies in my opinion
@@magicat7356 There's indications, both in an incantation and a map description, that the dragons, crows and dogs (these two more implied) ran away from Mountaintops many years before the game, not to mention the giant skeletons only present in those two areas, so it makes a lot of sense. Distance and years aren't an issue.
Absolutely disagree, liurnia is not too big. The reason why it looks so good is because of the scale! You can see raya lucaria towering above the lake throughout the entirety of liurnia. I've put like 500 hours into the game and I'm always glued to liurnia because of the view.
Good video, I agree with most of your points, especially in regards to Mountaintops and Caelid. However one thing I do find strange is that you have not ranked the smaller Legacy Dungeons (places like the Shaded Castle, Caria Manner, Castle Morne, Divine tower of Caelid, Carian Study Hall, etc.) in any of your videos, when a lot of these areas probably have more going on than say the lake of rot. I would be really interested to hear what you have to say about them.
Honestly I was one of my favourite parts of the game. The ambience and buildup for the Haligtree was so exciting for me and it made me super excited for what’s next. The area itself looks cool as well and I’m so sick of people shitting on it.
What I like about DS3 is that the shitty areas are the first ones and once you get to Irithyl the game just improves massively. What I hate about Elden Ring is that once I defeat Morgott I have to go to the Mountaintops.
I wouldn't call Consumed King's garden an improvement lol, but otherwise the areas are better, but the enemy reuse is pretty much like Mountaintops, almost only reused enemies from before.
7:09 really? I LOVE it, this is so different and challenger, you have to trace a path when the city is quiet, then runs trying to avoid the assassins, it's just amazing a challenge and puzzle whithout battle, i love so much
It is an interesting concept but it can be frustrating. The archers deal tons of damage and can easily spam the arrows to kill you really fast. And the invisible assassins are annoying with the grabs since you cannot see what they are doing, so there is no way to know the grab is coming your way. I had a time where I got grabbed, walked a few steps and got grabbed again. But, last time I decided to use Assassin's Gambit to sneak through and it was much more enjoyable experience. Avoiding the archers and making sure there are no assassins pursuing me. It feels like it was made for a good old stealth.
It was cool for the first time, but for people who replay these games a lot like Magicat, it probably gets really annoying and time consuming on consecutive plays. In fact, most souls players seem to hate gimmick sections/fights because of it.
@@alisthesia Yeah, the fun is figuring the gimmick for the first time and solving it. It kinda becomes a chore on repeat. It depends on the gimmick tho for me. I am also big replayer and some gimmicks I enjoy, while others not so much.
@@lordofthecookie8555 this is why the torch in Altus Plateau, which tells you that reveals the invisible assassins, is important in that section. If you don't use it, then of course they'll murder you. Still annoying for the archers suckers. But you only have to fight one assassin, which is easy with the torch.
@@enman009 Oh yeah, I actually remembered the torch while writing this. Sadly I always forget about it's existence since it is such a niche item that is useful in just 2 situations. Ordina and that one cave in Altus that also has an invisible assassin. And it is sold by an merchant you can easily miss. But thanks for the reminder.
Deeproot depths is my favorite from the underground areas. Seeing the the nest with the ant queens for the first time was so creepy. On 1.00 the atmosphere was even better too. Shame the simp squad sucked but fortunately Fortissax made up for it
I like the fact that Weeping Peninsula is so unremarkable. The Elden Ring feels so much more alive bc of that. Every country has land that seems inconsequential and unremarkable when compared to any other place within the said country. And the Weeping Peninsula is that place. Caelid had the most significant fight in the entire Shattering war, Liurnia is the most educated and sophisticated area, Altus Plateu is the most significant area in the ER, The mountain tops of the giants is rife with deep history, Limgrave is the most populated area in the Lands Between, and Weeping Peninsula has nothing significant about it. The most significant thing to happen in it is the misbegotten rebellion. Hell, every other area in the game has historically significant creatures either guarding it or rulling over it and the Weeping Peninsula has some random knight at the helm of it as a ruler. Weeping Peninsula is the quiet, small town in the middle of nowhere where everybody knows each other of the Lands Between and I love that about it.
altus plateau is absolutely my favourite area in the game, the music that backs it really just gives you the feeling of a once mighty kingdom thats long past its prime
Wow didn't expect some of the takes, but your points were pretty good. Altus still remains my favorite, i really loved exploring it. Overall ranking: 1. Altus Plateau 2. Limgrave 3. Liurnia 4. Caelid 5. Underground 6. Mt Gelimir 7. Weeping Peninsula 8. Snowfield 9. Mountaintops
Hot take but I think Mountaintops is underrated. The lore is better-understood now, so I feel like the weight of the catacombs and caves have more meaning now. The "reused assets" are there with purpose (the birds and dogs from Caelid, who are fighting the keepers of the flame, mind you, are not unlike the birds of Mohgwyn Palace - clearly these creatures aren't natural, but rather they might be connected to the fiery, tainting corruptive influence of these outer gods like the Fell God, Rot God, and Formless Mother). There's a lot of hidden stories there, and a somber atmosphere. And it culminates in one of the best legacy dungeons in the game - Farum Azula. Personally, I think the weakest is Caelid. That shocked me, too, when I thought about it and came to this conclusion. But yeah, don't get me wrong - Caelid is one of my favorite areas in terms of visual aesthetic and atmosphere. However, I don't much care for its side dungeons nor the majority of its catacombs/caves/bosses. For me, what makes an Elden Ring dungeon enjoyable to explore on replays is soaking in their stories and the smaller stories you might find within, spelling out more of the history in the area. However, because Caelid was nuked by a rot war, most of its areas are reflective of that. And while for some, like Gael Tunnel, use this to horrific effect, most just don't have that to me. I can't quite put my finger as to why, other than... it's the Lands Between's history that's now missing in most of these areas, which make them interesting, I suppose. They've all been touched by the war, and for me that translates its dungeons into blending together. On top of that, I'm not much of a fan of its layout, gameplay-wise. I find needing to do Sellia's torches to take more time, and thus be more tedious, than Ordina. And it's always to do Milicent's quest, which you'll likely always want to do to get the talismans and Ancient Somber Smithing Stone. And then there's Dragonbarrow, which is a great area, but because of the level divide between it and Caelid proper, you're forced to awkwardly come back in the endgame when you're leveled for it, all for an area with not much environmental storytelling happening in the west - not as much in the east, which most players are going to have awkwardly stumbled upon early through D's questline, in all likelihood. None of this is bad, mind you. I love Caelid and what they did with it, even all the stuff I've nitpicked. However, we're ranking these, and it's for these reasons that Caelid winds up as my least favorite area. This is despite Radahn being one of my favorite FS bosses of all time.
@@loftwingheropon2743 If you can kill her for the prosthesis-wearer's talisman, then that's nice. I never tried that actually. Alright, that mildly fixes one of my gripes with Caelid lol
@@jackreacher7495 You have no actual argument at all, fam. You're quite literally just saying: X is good because lore. There's nothing else to it. I'm old enough to remember a time when From weren't this lazy Fcks they are today and would add a little flavour to their reskins. Like the werewolves in BB. But they couldn't even do that much with Elden Ring.
Dude what more could I want? I just played the Lies Of P demo for my first time today and see Magicat my favourite ranking youtuber uploaded an Elden ring video. On top of that EVEN Zanny uploaded today.
mt. gelmir being that low is a crime tbh, but I suppose it makes sense considering what it's up against. also personally I like mountaintops and snowfield alot, but they don't really compare to the other open world areas, although I could say that they're better than weeping peninsula.
Personally, I think there are only 5 regions, with 4 of them having major sub-regions. Also, Mountaintops has an additional path at the west end of the valley, where you can find a spirit-spring that takes you to a hidden merchant and the Stargazer Ruins. You can also cross from one side of the upper layers to another via the invisible bridge connected to the mage tower. Also, I don't think holding replay value against some of these is the most fair criticism, since, by design, discovery is a major part of their appeal and that can't be reproduced on subsequent playthroughs. I don't think being less replayable is an inherent design flaw; that's just how open world games are.
I still find it really weird how you can’t take your horse out during any part of Ainsel River. It would be a bit too easy for a lot of it but at least the part when you get the Nokstella site of grace just seems like you should be able to ride a horse.
Pretend that the Death(rite) Birds don't have a lock on point on the head and the things become infinitely better. The one in Caelid has a terrible arena but apart from that they become decent bosses.
They are good bossfights tbh, as well as genuilly rather really hard bosses if holy damage is not used ( i Guess this hard bossfight having holy damage as super weak point is the reason of why holy kinda sucks at almost every other point of the Game, not even becuase the sources of holy damage are weaker than the others, but becuase almost every enemy has holy resistance
Yeah the Caelid one can go fuck itself, I don't know why they put a boss that demands a lot of movement from the player in area with roots and shit constantly getting in the way.
In my opinion, here's my order: Bad: consecrated snowfield Mediocre: Mountaintops of the Giants Decent: Weeping Peninsula Good: Liurnia of the Lakes, Underground, and Mt Gelmir, Great: Caelid Amazing: Limgrave and Altus Plateau.
Mountaintops is better than snowfield imo, atleast the ennemy are decent to fight (the monks) and there is a mini dungeon in it. Consecrated snowfield just feel blend and boring to explore.
I really disagree with the whole issue around the Caelid animals returning. The mountaintops are about as close as you can get to the Haligtree without actually being there. If they were to appear again, it makes sense to me that they’d be there. Y’know, adjacent to the Goddess of Rot.
First time playing Elden Ring I got up to the Manor in Liurnia. I didn’t know about the arrows. When they came storming down I fled and then found out I needed to progress through them. That will forever be one of my favorite moments in Fromsoft history.
I don't really understand how you separate the areas. In my mind, the Weeping Pennincula is part of Limgrave, and Mt Gelmir is part of the Altus Plateau. If you separate them, you should really count Dragonbarrow, the East and West or North and South of every region. I don't mind too much, since it let's us hear more of your thoughts on the game and regions, but it's strange.
Just got elden ring for the first time yesterday and now i will be able to relate to this game, keep up the good work bro love your content. Btw do u have any tips
Mt Gelmir is great because not only does it have an awesome 80's dark fantasy vibe, but also its out-of-the-way nature lends itself to authentic exploration. After Limgrave the exploration of the other zones just doesn't feel as rewarding, whether thats because if I needed something from Liurnia, Altus, or Caelid I would just look up where to find it, or because fast tracking the story took precedence in these areas. Mt Gelmir was a chance to return to that same level of immersion in discovery as Limgrave. Even in Liurnia while I have fond memories of trotting along on torrent being aghast at the beauty of the landscapes and the shier volume of content and world building packed into every nook and cranny, something about it wasn't the same as those first few hours in Limgrave. Perhaps because completionism set in rather than letting pure curiosity guide my journey. With Mt Gelmir that deliberate choice to take a side road gives you a chance to breathe and explore for the sake of exploring (all while acknowledging your progress thus far) is what is so hooking about this game and this area in particular. Also the constant climbing subconsciously gives you a goal throughout this area when you know the crazy lava castle you got teleported to and stuck in earlier in your playthrough is waiting for you at the top along with all your unanswered questions.
i feel like the problem with mountaintops is that people keep trying to speedrun through it because it's near the end of the game and most people are tired. overall it has a fair amount of content and is great to explore if you let yourself relax and take the time to do it. you know what area actually sucks ass in terms of being huge and mostly empty with just your horse to run through ? fucking liurnia edit: did you .... not explore the fire castle? it has a prayerbook and the one eyed shield and and multiple npc fights. it's not a legacy dungeon but it's not just walls either
I feel like a lot of people, yourself included, forget that the Lands Between fell into civil war with each other after the shattering when complaining about enemy variety. That's why Malenia's Cleanrot Knights are in Caelid, their ghosts even still fighting against Radahn's army and ghosts despite Malenia having long retreated to the Haligtree. Why Leyndel soldiers have siege defenses on both sides of its main entrances (towards Liurnia of the Lakes a land whose military they've fought and lost to twice before, likely why there's art of Morgott fighting Radahn [pre-Rot] and toward Mt. Gelmir who they tried to siege for treason and blasphemy). Liurnia itself being in a smaller civil war among civil wars between the Carian Royals and Raya Lucaria. The Haligtree having the variety it does as its effectively a refugee camp for those willing to show loyalty to Miquella and Melenia, regardless of species. Why are Caelid dogs on the Mountain Tops? Because as the Lore explains very few people know how to get to the Haligtree, they just know its somewhere in the north, so given that she literally declared war on and attacked them, Radahn and his military leaders rather likely and sensibly sent soldiers and their wardogs (now infected by Scarlet Rot) to find and retaliate against the Haligtree, the birds likely being mutated messenger birds. However since they were in the complete wrong area and equiped to fight the wrong people, and dying of Rot, only finding and maybe fighting the Heroes of Zamor, Fire Monks and Trolls, they were likely routed and forced to retreat. Leaving the dogs and birds behind.
while I agree that mountain tops of the giants is the worst area. Its super easy to get through on torrent and I appreciate the change in scenery. I don’t think it makes the game worse. It just doesn’t add much except for a snow area and a few good bosses.
Liurnia to me is far more terrifying than Caelid. Especially the lake portion. Too many giant lobsters, those bell-ringing cunts, bad visibility even at noon, poison flowers sitting on every valuable item, and it's just endlessly big. In Caelid the only really terrible part if Sellia with the invisible motherfuckers. Otherwise I just stick to cliff edges and avoid most of the enemies.
I disagree with liurnia being to big in scale. I am actually for adding more space to smaller zones. It gives you the feeling of actually traveling somewhere and gives you an opportunity to soak in the ambience and atmosphere. Cramping the content too close together robs a zone of its sense of scale.
I agree with most of your points, but please, can we stop saying that Mountaintops are the second half of the game? ( 10:09 ) I know it's not great or even good, but it's barely 1/6 of the game and you can get through it quite fast and after there's Farum Azula which is great.
@@magicat7356 ok, I understand your point! I think the mountaintops would have been better if the whole place was a comprised experience with some branching paths, like mt. Gelmir, instead of the massive areas we got.
I would personally Put the Underground Areas behind Altus. But when we ignore this, am I ranking the Regions exactly like you. So much Solid criticism or good stuff to say, for each Region. My Brother didnt realite how awesome Liurnia is, before I opened his Eyes. Everybody loves Caelid so much. But how you mentioned, no Legacy Dungeon and Greyolls Dragonburrow scks. I love your content Man. FIND MORE STUFF TO SAY ABOUT A FRANCHISE WITH TO MUCH CONTENT LIKE THIS!! I dont care, SOULS CONTENT IS SOULS CONTENT!
Going to Gelmir early (before Caelid or Leyndell) is an awesome experience. On my first and blind playthrough, the fallingstar beast absolutely fucked me up. I think I died less killing the tree sentinel and tree spirit out of the gate.
Don’t forget you can also get it early by killing Bernhal then accessing the Manor shop later, then no need to kill Rykard or do the quest. Useful for a speed run
@@blazex224 You're right, but I usually go to Mt. Gelmir anyway to collect the map and fight the Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast (low-key a really good boss), so I figure I might as well do the assassination guest to grab the aforementioned Scaled set, which is a great armor set for the mid-game.
My ranking of the regions would be: 1. The Underground (Siofra, Ainsel, and Deeproot Depths) 2. Liurnia of the Lakes 3. Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula 4. Caelid and Dragonbarrow 5. Altus Plateau and Mt Gelmir 6. Mountaintops of the Giants and the Consecrated Snowfields I didn’t include the quality of the legacy dungeons, because not all regions have legacy dungeons. I made this list based off of the quality of the main path, the visuals and atmosphere, and the optional content.
The mountaintops of the giants isn't my favourite area, but I don't really like it. Despite that it isn't as big as it may look. The area of the mountaintops where you can go to is about as big as caelid without dragonburrow. It just looks very big on the map.
Problem is that even though its not as big as other regions, it's all linear and narrow so it takes longer to reach the end of Mountaintops compared to Caelid, and pretty much every zone except maybe Liurnia.
@@magicat7356 But it's still very small and easy to move around. Unless you're doing Castle Sol and every cave, it's by a good margin the smallest open area of the game.
Caelid is probably my favorite region, but I HATE going there. Hyper vigilance , stress, all the wildest enemies like kindred, dogs, and surprise crows with teeth beaks. I went there right after limgrave but it was stupid fun!
Mountaintops and Consecrated Snowfield definitely got a demon ruins treatment, I love the area and the atmosphere, but enemy wise it’s trash, nothing unique to offer really
The partitioning in this video is a little bit off, weeping peninsula and the consecrated snowfields are just sub sections of their main regions (Limgrave and Mountaintops).

Snow area is shit, everything else is S tier. Caelid, Liurnia, the golden fields around Leyndell, and all of the underground are my favorites... I guess that's 70% of the game though
I think people tend to over divide areas. To me there are 4 distinct open world areas (to be an open world area it has to be non linear, to allow horseback riding and to have side dungeons/legacy dungeons within or connected to them) with similar feel and colour palette (people have also mentioned that they reflect a certain season: 1) Limgrave/ Weeping peninsula/ Liurnia - Spring (liurnia probably late spring) 2) Caelid/Dragon Barrow - Summer 3) Altus Plateau/ Mt. Gelmir - Autumn (Gelmir probably late Autumn) 4) Mountaintop of the Giants/ Consecrated Snowfields - Winter The underground to me is a huge legacy Dungeon and not an open world area, since it is linear generally, does not have ANY side dungeons, does not have or connect to any legacy dungeons and horse riding is very limited. I do see that it is kinda in between though.
3rd place shouldve been Haligtree. Idk if u included it in consecrated snowfields, but that area is challenging and has the best field bosses/main boss.
very surprised that altus plateau is below liurnia. liurnia is one of my personal least favourite regions, way too big, weak legacy dungeon, boring enemies. looks cool from the overlook though.
LOL. Starts out with "Mountaintops of Giants sucks" which has me questioning his opinions right out of the gate. Follows up with an ad for Raid Shadow Legends. Okay, all credibility lost. I don't need to continue.
@@magicat7356 For me, Mountaintops of the Giants just has one of the best atmospheres and scenery of any area in the game, and I do not mind it being emptier than other regions. It fits the area thematically, and there still is enough interesting content to find despite Mountaintops being a bit emptier. I also don't mind the recycled enemies considering the variety of different enemies in that region, which is also why I enjoyed Flame Peaks, despite not really having much to explore. One new type of enemies would have been nice though, admittedily. Mountain Tops of the Giants kind of feels like a last big stretch that is supposed to wow with scenery in particular, with some last exploration before you finally get to the end of the area. In the end it's all subjective though, so no idea why placing that region at the bottom would discredit your opinions.
from worst to best imo and why -#10 Snowfield ❌😒 Its boring, overly punishing, restricted vision But it looks cool (but lets be real whenever you open elden eing are you saying “Man cant wait to go through the consecrated snowfields !!🤓”?) -#9 Caelid 🤢 Caelid does an amazing job in making a setting that you don’t want to be in … so why the hell would i want to play in it? Its ugly and has annoying enemy’s and disappointing exploration -#8 Weeping peninsula 🫤 This area truly feel like a waste of development time…but its an addition to limgrave -#6 mt gelmir 😐 I love the build up to mt gelmir but lord it was a short lived disappointment everything is peaking in the mid category it doesnt feel like your at the “volcano manor” it feels like limgrave (rocky) … Its not bad but its not amazing wither perfectly balanced in mid -#5 Lurania lake 😯 I love the view, the enemies are lame and the Travel time is to long (making good use of the horse mechanic) -#4 underground 😮 This and lurania lake are really on the same level to me except when you reach the underground your character build starts to really develop Its pretty criminal to put ALL the underground in one category but whatever The shock factor and the spectacle is what raises this area above the rest other than that it feels like an area you just run through -#3 altus plateau 😎 Very unique and beautiful area with cool and challenging enemies (for the most part) Also best castle in the game -#2 mountain tops of the gaints🥶😳 Now…let me explain The hype i get from the mountain tops of the giants is unmatched being in the cold and getting the most difficulty out of a huge icy mountain makes it feel really special The area looks just straight up amazing and i don’t mind reusing the same enemy types ( i hate dogs and birds but i can look past it) Knowing that late game is in a snowy area sounds cool as hell and it is! The fire looks amazing in it although the fire gaint is mechanical a sad boss But oh lord farum azula is my favorite location with my favorite bosses -#1 limgrave ❤🥺 Ah good ol lim grave This area feels like home its relaxing and lies in a special place in everyones heart Coming back to it feels great every time Well this comment is mainly for me to reflect on but lemme know what you think ☠️ I have a lil free time to argue
Honestly I don’t mind the mountaintops, but I hate the consecrated snowfield. The snowstorm on a first playthrough with those bow users on the wolves made it miserable.

In defense of the mountaintops... the scenery looks really really cool. If it was a Lords of the Ring-like montage of your character riding through it, it'd be impressive.
Looks cool but it’s atrocious to navigate when you’re new to the game
Yeah, assuming you don't get mauled to death, it is beautiful.
I actually got mad at how overwhelmed I was at first
I wanted my first playthrough to get all weapons and fight all bosses 😂
To me Weeping Peninsula gameplay wise feels like a beginner friendly starter area. It's a portion of Limgrave that houses a lot of great loot and easy encounters. Atleast compared to Stormveil starting with Margit.
It does it's job really well on the 1st playtrough and challenge runs imo.
I also have to give props to the thematic aspects of it. Everything from the naming to the environment tells a story about the cycle of revenge.
i feel like a great way they could have done it was to start you on the south east end of the lake so that you had the option to go towards weeping peninsula or stormveil castle
wym? there's nothing to do in the castle, you just talk to one dude at the top and tells you to fuck off.
It's good since it's an area people that want to get stronger for Margit would go, and it has some interesting stuff and good enemy scaling, unlike Elphael where everything even at 60 vigor full bullgoat hit like trucks and it's filled and structured like an DS2 Gank area in term of enemies
I’m not gonna lie I think Weeping Peninsula is part of Limgrave. Hearing Erdtree Avatar theme 1st time is empowering.

The collars also suggest they were somewhat domesticated and taken to the mountaintops rather than being native. The big crows likely just migrated.
The Mountaintops would've been my favourite area if it had unique enemies.
Well, I mean the Giant bats with the spotted wings are only there.
It's the most diverse area in the game.
@@antiqua537 Riding through Liurnia at night with all the glowing blue flowers and crystals is magical experience.
I had a similar experience, and what contributed to it a lot was also realizing that there was that whole new area and the map had doubled. This felt amazing every time this happened in the game, because of course the map just kept growing

Castle Sol and the first huge bridge in that region are the best parts in the Mountaintops of the giant.

Consecrated snowfield just felt so empty to me, I feel like they obscured visibility to cover up for the lack of content. I have to say I prefer Mountaintop of the Giants, as it actually has some good exploration and also has the Fire Giant which was dope.
Agreed
elden ring discourse be like : "if you reuse a low level boss as an ennemy later it automatically invalidates it for some reason"
"what about asylum demon, taurus demon, moonlight butterfly and capra demon ? also if we count dark souls 2 reuses, what about Orstein and Gargoyles ?"
"well no because reusing is only bad when it's done for secondary extra content I decided"
"Doesn't it make it cool bonuses that allow you to test how strong you became or fight in a different environement to see how it impacts the gameplay ?"
"Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah is bad cuz then it's not speeeeciiiiiial"
Tbh I think mountaintops is mediocre at least, decent at best, Yes, I agree the reuse of enemies isn’t the best, but at least they aren’t bad enemies, and its great visually (Which is not saying much since every other region besides gelmir and snowfield and better looking lmao) and I like the traversal of it with the chains and bridges
It's dull, but harmless overall.
The consecrated snowfield makes me kinda sad tbh because it has the BEST ambience and atmosphere imo. I think there should have been a little more to this area, maybe a new enemy or something else to do and see here, i still like this region tho, the ost makes me feel melancholic and nostalgic.
I also think it wouldn't have killed the devs to turns the snow down a little bit in the southeastern parts of the map.
@@K0DA._.nah i like the heavy snow it gives the region its identity.

@@saulgoneman Well , you can enter the mohgwyn palace by doing the varre questline , this is how i entered here for the first time .
That makes sense... but now Mountaintops is literally as far away as humanly possible from Caelid, so it doesn't make sense.
@@magicat7356I mean if the enemies where the same before it split the enemies wouldn’t just change from the other region they just aren’t connected
So glad you’re keeping your promise about the Erdtree Avatar video
Also holy shit Raid Shadow Legends sponsor
I don't know why but I love Consecrated Snowfield. It's probably my favorite open world area in the game

It lowkey reminds me of Akkala from BOTW

1. Altus Plateau
2. Limgrave
3. Liurnia
4. Caelid
5. Underground
6. Mt Gelimir
7. Weeping Peninsula
8. Snowfield
You technically don’t need to do sellia to do Millicent’s quest line there are alternate ways to get up there from I think dragons barrow .
@@loftwingheropon2743 If you can kill her for the prosthesis-wearer's talisman, then that's nice. I never tried that actually. Alright, that mildly fixes one of my gripes with Caelid lol

I remember reading somewhere that Ainsel River was made before the horse was added to the game
Hi Magicat. Could you make a video where you rank the minor legacy dungeons (maybe + chariot dungeons)?
Pretend that the Death(rite) Birds don't have a lock on point on the head and the things become infinitely better. The one in Caelid has a terrible arena but apart from that they become decent bosses.
They are good bossfights tbh, as well as genuilly rather really hard bosses if holy damage is not used ( i Guess this hard bossfight having holy damage as super weak point is the reason of why holy kinda sucks at almost every other point of the Game, not even becuase the sources of holy damage are weaker than the others, but becuase almost every enemy has holy resistance
They have lock on point on their torso.
@@АлісаКозловська Yeah that was what I was implying but I should've said so explicitly.
Yeah the Caelid one can go fuck itself, I don't know why they put a boss that demands a lot of movement from the player in area with roots and shit constantly getting in the way.
In my opinion, here's my order:
Bad: consecrated snowfield
Mediocre: Mountaintops of the Giants
Decent: Weeping Peninsula
Good: Liurnia of the Lakes, Underground, and Mt Gelmir,
Great: Caelid
Amazing: Limgrave and Altus Plateau.
22:14 Ngl that kind of semi-open world level design seems to be exactly like what they’re doing with Armored Core VI.

@@magicat7356 good advice

A new video by magicat, the magical cat
I agreed with almost everything, but I would change the top 4. For me is
1. Underground/Eternal cities
2. Altus Plateau
3.Liurnia
4.Limgrave
You first encounter the Fire Prelate in the small castle in western Mt Gelmir, your encounter at mountaintops isn’t likely your first.
WHIP variant you only face in mountaintops
The scale of mountaintop of the giants is worth the price of admission. That bridge is epic
while I agree that mountain tops of the giants is the worst area.
You neglected to mention how cool it was to do tower in Caelid for the first time.
I agree with mountaintops being the worst region but putting it in bad tier is kinda overkill imo. I'd put it at mediocre really.
I think the fact that it lowers the quality and pacing of the end game so much warrants the tier, even if on its own its not that terrible
Idk if it's just me, but I find Mountaintops significantly better than Consecrated Snowfields. There's just nothing there except warps
Mountaintops of the giants is one of my favorite open regions to invade
Fire Prelate is in a few different places! 2 in Mountaintop and 1 in Fort Laidde
But ones with whip? That's what I was talking about
@@magicat7356 The start of the Chain Bridge I think in the Mountain Top
I disagree with liurnia being to big in scale. I am actually for adding more space to smaller zones. It gives you the feeling of actually traveling somewhere and gives you an opportunity to soak in the ambience and atmosphere. Cramping the content too close together robs a zone of its sense of scale.
Exactly! It's a work of art and is easily my favourite area of the game.
The Weeping Peninsula is an excellent opening area in ER - it’s where the spent a lot of my early game time
I agree with most of your points, but please, can we stop saying that Mountaintops are the second half of the game? ( 10:09 ) I know it's not great or even good, but it's barely 1/6 of the game and you can get through it quite fast and after there's Farum Azula which is great.
I never said it is the entirety of the second half. I said it breaks the pacing of the second half, of which it is a part of.
@@magicat7356 ok, I understand your point!
I think the mountaintops would have been better if the whole place was a comprised experience with some branching paths, like mt. Gelmir, instead of the massive areas we got.
I love how no one mentions that the lake in liurnia is just one giant puddle
The return of the king
If someone watched this in isolation they might end up thinking you didn't even like the game
my ranking:
1-limgrave
2-sacred tree
3-nokron
4-nokstella
5-altus plateau
6-consecrated snowfield
7-mountaintops of the giants
8-mt gelmir
9-weeping peninsula
10-liurnia
11-caelid
12- erdtree roots
Calling Ordina Liturgical Town the "Ordinary Literal Torture Town" is peak comedy 😂
I'm using it from now on
Going to Gelmir early (before Caelid or Leyndell) is an awesome experience. On my first and blind playthrough, the fallingstar beast absolutely fucked me up. I think I died less killing the tree sentinel and tree spirit out of the gate.
Assassin's Gambit makes Ordina so much more bearable.
I always do the first Volcano Manor assaination quest to get it, along with the Scaled set.
My ranking of the regions would be:
1. The Underground (Siofra, Ainsel, and Deeproot Depths)
2. Liurnia of the Lakes
3. Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula
4. Caelid and Dragonbarrow
5. Altus Plateau and Mt Gelmir
6. Mountaintops of the Giants and the Consecrated Snowfields
I didn’t include the quality of the legacy dungeons, because not all regions have legacy dungeons. I made this list based off of the quality of the main path, the visuals and atmosphere, and the optional content.
1st: Underground Zones
2nd: Caelid + Dragonbarrow
3rd: Faram Azula
4th: Limgrave + Weeping Peninsula
5th: Altus Plateau
6th: Liurnia of the Lakes
7th: Mt. Gelmir
8th: Mountaintops of the Giants + Consecrated Snowfield
Niall is very underrated I’d agree. I’d say mountaintops is mediocre not bad
Holy shit, Magicat sponsored by Raid Shadow Legends? What a wonderful day
The partitioning in this video is a little bit off, weeping peninsula and the consecrated snowfields are just sub sections of their main regions (Limgrave and Mountaintops).
Haha while I Really agree on exploring Siofra and the rest of the underground world, I got really surprised that you didn't mention Farum Azula!

Sounds like a great deal!
Weeping Peninsula is literally just one big DS3 Easter egg, that's it
Snow area is shit, everything else is S tier. Caelid, Liurnia, the golden fields around Leyndell, and all of the underground are my favorites... I guess that's 70% of the game though
Mountaintops is even smaller than Caelid, making it the smallest region in the game. That is far less than 30%.
Altus Plateau=Yellow Limgrave. That’s what I think of every time I arrive there.
I think people tend to over divide areas. To me there are 4 distinct open world areas (to be an open world area it has to be non linear, to allow horseback riding and to have side dungeons/legacy dungeons within or connected to them) with similar feel and colour palette (people have also mentioned that they reflect a certain season:
1) Limgrave/ Weeping peninsula/ Liurnia - Spring (liurnia probably late spring)
2) Caelid/Dragon Barrow - Summer
3) Altus Plateau/ Mt. Gelmir - Autumn (Gelmir probably late Autumn)
4) Mountaintop of the Giants/ Consecrated Snowfields - Winter
The underground to me is a huge legacy Dungeon and not an open world area, since it is linear generally, does not have ANY side dungeons, does not have or connect to any legacy dungeons and horse riding is very limited. I do see that it is kinda in between though.
Actually, all the ladders in Gelmir are to prepare you for the eater snake.
Wait...
3rd place shouldve been Haligtree. Idk if u included it in consecrated snowfields, but that area is challenging and has the best field bosses/main boss.
Its not a region , its a legacy dungeon
As a British person, saying something is ‘peak’ means unlucky haha. So your RAID Shadow Legends segment was in fact ‘peak’
Surprised you didn’t include Moghwyn palace in underground.
very surprised that altus plateau is below liurnia. liurnia is one of my personal least favourite regions, way too big, weak legacy dungeon, boring enemies. looks cool from the overlook though.
LOL. Starts out with "Mountaintops of Giants sucks" which has me questioning his opinions right out of the gate. Follows up with an ad for Raid Shadow Legends. Okay, all credibility lost. I don't need to continue.
Can you make a case for Mountaintops being better than other regions? And yeah, what's wrong with taking sponsors?
@@magicat7356 Tbf, it doesn't have to be better than the other regions to not suck.
from worst to best imo and why
-#10 Snowfield ❌😒
Its boring, overly punishing, restricted vision
But it looks cool
(but lets be real whenever you open elden eing are you saying
“Man cant wait to go through the consecrated snowfields !!🤓”?)
-#9 Caelid 🤢
Caelid does an amazing job in making a setting that you don’t want to be in
…
so why the hell would i want to play in it? Its ugly and has annoying enemy’s and disappointing exploration
-#8 Weeping peninsula 🫤
This area truly feel like a waste of development time…but its an addition to limgrave
-#6 mt gelmir 😐
I love the build up to mt gelmir but lord it was a short lived disappointment everything is peaking in the mid category it doesnt feel like your at the “volcano manor” it feels like limgrave (rocky)
…
Its not bad but its not amazing wither perfectly balanced in mid
-#5 Lurania lake 😯
I love the view, the enemies are lame and the Travel time is to long (making good use of the horse mechanic)
-#4 underground 😮
This and lurania lake are really on the same level to me except when you reach the underground your character build starts to really develop
Its pretty criminal to put ALL the underground in one category but whatever
The shock factor and the spectacle is what raises this area above the rest other than that it feels like an area you just run through
-#3 altus plateau 😎
Very unique and beautiful area with cool and challenging enemies (for the most part)
Also best castle in the game
-#2 mountain tops of the gaints🥶😳
Now…let me explain
The hype i get from the mountain tops of the giants is unmatched being in the cold and getting the most difficulty out of a huge icy mountain makes it feel really special
The area looks just straight up amazing and i don’t mind reusing the same enemy types ( i hate dogs and birds but i can look past it)
Knowing that late game is in a snowy area sounds cool as hell and it is!
The fire looks amazing in it although the fire gaint is mechanical a sad boss
But oh lord farum azula is my favorite location with my favorite bosses
-#1 limgrave ❤🥺
Ah good ol lim grave
This area feels like home its relaxing and lies in a special place in everyones heart
Coming back to it feels great every time
Well this comment is mainly for me to reflect on but lemme know what you think ☠️
I have a lil free time to argue
Honestly I don’t mind the mountaintops, but I hate the consecrated snowfield. The snowstorm on a first playthrough with those bow users on the wolves made it miserable.
Couldn't agree more with the underground levels being the best regions in ER.
I started crying laughing after the first 5 seconds
