I was absolutely shook when I heard this in the theater. In 2.5 minutes, it totally summarizes and eviscerates the bizzaro-world standards women are held to. If America Ferrara does nothing else, she will be deservedly remembered for delivering this speech. Bravo, Greta Gerwig.
It's all humans... not women. We seem to be still locked into this celebration of victimhood. It's a VERY American sentiment that sadly so many other Western countries have latched on to: "woe is me". "Poor me" "I'm a victim". We really need to embrace stoicism which is the EXACT opposite of victimhood.
It's the perpetual victim speech. And women hold each other to, or are responsible for, most of it. Take some responsibility. Look: both men and women deal with stuff like this daily. So we're not enemies, we're made to complement each other. It's about recognizing our weaknesses more than our strengths and leaning into each for help.
I understand that, but do the Barbie's understand the weight of her words? The only reason why Barbie was feeling such existential dread is because of Gloria's connection.
It is a character with no original thought except for the script that was written off. In simple terms she is just yapping.
The comments to your reply pretty much sum up why it's impossible to be a woman: 1. Immediately dismisses women to recenter men, 2. Blames women for being victims, 3. Points out that it's just a script so it's not "real." It's honestly just...so perfect. Thank you, random UA-cam dudes, for so perfectly, *perfectly* underscoring the truth of this speech without even realizing you are. Seriously, just bravo.
The best decision they made with this scene was leaving out the background music. All of the power of the moment went to America, no one and nothing else

The best decision would be not having this cringe speech at all lol
It was astonishing how in the theatre you could literally feel all women being moved and feeling themselves so represented, it was a special moment.

I watched it at a drive in and you could still feel it.... and all women started cheering at the end of the speech. It was cool.

I watched Barbie in theater in my German hometown. During the speech, you could hear a pin drop and when it was over, some girls behind me started applauding. Most of the audience joined in, including me and my sisters. Barely ever did I feel such a strong sense of sisterhood and understanding with a bunch of girls and women I didn't even know. Whatever people say about the Barbie movie, I can only thank Greta for speaking so strongly for women in western societies and giving me and so many other girls the feeling of sisterhood and of being understood.
btw, sorry for my English. as I said, I'm German.
Writing an eloquent comment in perfect English and then pointing out your „poor English“ because you‘re German…that‘s so German. 😅
@@floraskott 😂 thanks though😊
Yet, you women are the ones - who created those standards. You wanna outshine eachother, and want the same men. You seek the same attention, and the same gains. If you spend time with your father, you would never have been in such a dark place. This is why fathers matter. Not feminism.
Amazing English, don't doubt yourself!😊

The biggest twist of my life was discovering that the generic mother who appears in the Barbie movie is Astrid's voice actress in How to Train Your Dragon.

The day I learned this I haven’t been able to unhear Astrid talking.

Everything America Ferrera said, MEN also have to deal with. It's not a issue that only women face. And people, including her, are making it seem so. It's sexist, and it's disgusting.
@androow1983 It's not sexist that she spoke on true experiences that women have though? If anything, she was speaking on her own experiences as well. She's not attacking or excluding men by speaking on female experiences, the speech doesn't invalidate or dismiss their issues simply by not talking about them. What are you on about
@androow1983 It's upsetting & very true that men have their share of struggles as well as women do. But she wasn't wrong. & the Barbie movie didn't put down men either, so that's a some excessive fire being put on a woman just doing her job.
@@joxiejoxie6457 It's very indicative as of it being a female experience, and not a male experience, and a lot of people believe that too
I cried and cheered when she was done after I heard her speech, I am so disappointed that the writers for this movie didn’t get the Oscar for this movie this speech alone was worth getting the award because it really speaks volumes about us women and it makes me so proud to be a woman. Barbie made even me a plus size woman feel beautiful and better about myself.

@@Just_Samm Oh my bad for being against the ignorance.
Barbie impacted me more than I thought it would. I remember watching that BTS shot of Barbie being assaulted in the L.A boardwalk and punching the guy and thinking "Great, another cashgrab of a movie." And then the trailer came out for it, and I saw all the hype and thought "Okay, this will be fun!" So me and my boyfriend dressed up as barbie and ken for the premiere. I remember how people came together wearing blonde wigs and pink dresses. I remember someone yelling "Come on barbie, lets go party!" In the crowd and all of us laughing. I remember the cheering of the crowd during the title card. I really wasnt expecting to have as much fun as I did, but I did.
And then I took my sister to see it. I was fresh out of therapy, and struggling with my purpose. I can remember crying like a baby during the "What was I made for?" Scene, laughing with her during "Im Just Ken", and talking about the movie on our way home on the bus.
The other day I was in the throws of insecurity, and thinking "Nobody looks like me. I feel so alone and unlikable." And immediately, without warning, my mind thinks back to this scene. This monologue is so important to me, and every single woman. Someone remade it in the comments from a mans perspective. And im sorry, but you dont get it. You never will, the system isnt rigged against you like it is us. (This isnt an excuse to be transphobic, trans women are women.) And in the points it is rigged against you, thats still the same patriarchy we're fighting against! Why do you think you cant show your emotions? Why do you think mens suicide rates are so high? Because of toxic masculinity.
And yet you still are unable to explain WHAT this patriarchy actually is. Facts please.

I am a woman and I agree to this 100%. I also have nephews and when I look at them I notice how it can be impossible to be a man too. They have to love their kids but not too much or they’ll be seen as a mom. They have to be strong, but not too strong or they’ll be seen as jerks or if they are not strong enough they are not real men. They have to like sports and nothing romantic. They have to work hard to support their family but not too hard or it will seem like they don’t love their family or if they work too hard they’ll be seen as absent fathers. They have to treat their daughters and sons differently and if they are not the stereotypical son and daughter, people will think there is something wrong. They have to want to do housework but at the same time not like it or they’ll be seen as being whipped. They are not allowed to cry or have feelings or they’ll be made fun of.
My nephews are sweet and kind. They cry and one of them plays with dolls. I worry how the world will see them, but at the same time, I’m proud of them. I acknowledge how hard it is to be a woman, because I am a woman and it is so damn hard. But I realize that it can be hard to be a man too. The social goals society puts on women and men, it’s just so sad and like America says, I am so tired of it.

Thank you for putting this in writing. What you say about becoming a man is soo true. Confusing, relentlessly pessimistic, the standards are ridiculous. Soo much pressure to "be a certain way" for group, family, or societal acceptance. And we wonder why so many young people have chosen "trouble" in their lives. Regardless, the first time I saw this movie, I was nearly moved to tears when I got to this scene, even as a man. @@gertanckaert3023 I think what he's trying to say is that it wasn't over-acted, over-written or over-directed. This movie could have very easily tipped into being full-blown camp or (even worse) an awful case of tonal whiplash, but Gerwig and the writers did so well with it and Ferrera and especially Robbie delivered their lines with such perfect balance between humor and gravity that their points could land home. Too dramatic a performance or dialogue ("in your face-ness") can spoil a movie and cause the audience to disregard the message. This movie was balanced on a knife's-edge with writing, directing and acting, and they absolutely nailed it.

It is literally impossible to be a man. You are so handsome, and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.
You have to be strong, but not too strong, or you will be seen as "toxic". And you can never say you want to be strong. You have to say you want to be resilient, but, really, you have to be strong. You have to gain money, or your value as a man will become close to zero, but you have to share it also if your companion does a big nothing. If by hard work and investing most of your time you become a boss, it is only because of your privilege. You have to lead, but you can’t squash other people’s ideas, or try to discuss about them: it would be perceived as mansplaining. You’re supposed to love being a father, but whether you want to become one or not, the decision is never yours. And you don't even have the right to the certainty of raising your own children. "Do you not trust your partner? You are a monster!". You have to be a career man, but just to provide for other people. You have to answer for women’s bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you’re accused of toxicity. You’re supposed to be handsome in order to rise the interest of women, but not so handsome that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other man because... hey, man are loyal to their friends! But always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful. You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line, never cry. It’s too hard! It’s too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault.
I’m just so tired of watching myself and every single other man tie himself into knots so that people will appreciate us. And if all of that is also true for a doll just representing men, then I don’t even know.
This is such an amazing translation of the speech into a male perspective. I do think we need to talk about men’s struggles under patriarchy while also talking about women’s struggles
@@judgmentalanimal Thank you. My point is: life is a struggle for both sexes, but I don't think the reason is patriarchy. As a woman, I often come here to watch this as a reminder to myself that I'm not the only one feeling that it's difficult to still stay strong when people intentionally put you down over and over 😊
Just because it doesn't apply to you doesn't mean what was said here is bs... I really appreciate this scene because it is very emotional to me... I was abandoned as a child. My parents weren't really there for me. My mom got remarried when I was 10, and I was happy with my new family until my stepdad cheated on my mom with my friend when I was 22. Again, I was left alone, betrayed by someone who earned my trust, who I called dad for 12 years. My mom became depressed and alcoholic. I had to support myself during university. I also struggled to have healthy relationships and often found myself in abusive ones. I got cheated on and beat up multiple times. I got through all that, and no one has ever told me that they're proud of me... not even myself... It might be true that I have a victim mindset, but you can't say life hasn't beat the sh outta me 😂
This scene is a reminder that life is just so difficult and the difficulties for each one of us just vary... and we need to be proud of ourselves even though things in our lives are messed up...
Even though I have a stronger mindset now, this scene still speaks to me, and I'm glad it doesn't speak to all of you.
And for guys who say that this applies to everyone, not just women, I completely agree. But please let us have our moments and gather in our sisterhood for once.

@_PuppetMaster86 Are you capable of independent thought? We've seen this same speech in countless posts on Facebook and other spaces for almost 30 years. Junk emails with it. And it completely ignores shifts and the fact society isn't one person but many, and worse it's not men placing the standards but women usually.
@ *_(WET FARTING NOISES)_*
What I love about this movie is that it calls out men for their behaviors and the system we live in, but also how other women who are supposed to support us tear us down.
I cried so hard in the theater 😭
jesus
@@H-Vox yes?
Anybody with half a brain can complain just about ...anything. Won the lottery? oh damm!! now I have to pay taxes !!! I am so mad and oppressed and the system is rigged!! (but didn't you just win the lottery? shouldn't you be happy?) No! in today's WOKE world women complain, complain, complain, we find something wrong with everything !! (what a loser generation )
Even though I wasn't a huge fan of the movie as a whole, this scene is incredible. This speech....it gets me every time!!😢💜
can i just say this is the best comment section ive seen in a long time...ppl r acknowledging different points of view and so respectfully too
Needs a best supportting actress Oscar ❤
Why does everybody have to like you? Some people will like you, hate you, or love you, you can't decide how they feel about you and that's okay. You do have the freedom to do as you please, nobody is cornering you into acting as anyone wants you to
I don't know, sometimes workplace survival (for example) can depend on being a more palatable version of yourself. Not saying it's right, but sometimes it's a reality.
This is soooooo so soo true. Omg. Its soo deep. Whoever thought of these lines, i m just soo grateful to them. Its the reality of this world!!
it’s so true i was the most unhappy person in the world trying to persuade thise rules and now i am the happiest with all the imperfections i have
THE actual best bit of the whole film
So much truth in this!
Meanwhile women in Kabul or Tehran seeing this would be like "Uh-huh". If they were permitted to speak.
I saw this in the theater and it rendered me speechless. Brilliant summation of the societal standards and double standards. America Ferrera delivered Greta's words perfectly. And let me point out, that as a man, l didnt feel belittled, diminshed or threstened by this rant. And those who do should check their behavior and perhaps their privilege.
I am a guy, I have watched this speech over and over, and I am speechless every time. I think its amazing and would not have been as good if anyone else had done it.
Sounds like a bag of bricks to women; real, heavy.
It's absolutely perfect!!! I adore that it's been said, and while they say misery loves company, I think its just nice that none of us are alone on this one! I'm exhausted from trying to... and always falling just short of some expectation that I didn't even know was there, either from myself or from another, until...oops too late. Another almost win is still a partial fail. ❤❤❤ to all the women struggling with whatever you're struggling with... I feel you girl! just being you is more than enough!
I teared up during this. I loved taking my daughter to see this movie. A great bonding experience.
America hope you win a Oscar because delivered speech perfectly and encouragement.
You have to be pretty? I always get annoyed when my sister takes an hour putting on makeup. A lot of these "expectations" are ones I either don't have of women or share equally with men.
Damn! I have tears in my eyes!! That is a well too well, award winning well written scene!
This made me cry in theaters!
Woa this is powerful stuff! Tying yourself in knots so people will like you. As a man I would say don't! And people will LOVE you - I think it's about being authentic.
All this applies to men as well .. not upper middle white men , but other men.. yea all this applies.. its all about balance ppl.. you cant be too much anything good or bad…
This “iconic speech” is so hyperbolic and absurd lmao
😢😢😢 I didn't knew she was speeking to you, as a woman you completly get it don't you 😢😢😢😢 it must be hard living this life as you would like to be a woman soooo bad..
@InnerAtanih nerd
what a scene, wow.
I feel this to my very core
I expected this movie to be brilliant but this…this was unexpected and hit me like a ton of bricks.
I was sat in the right upper corner of the cinema,on my own, with a random to my left a seat away, as I unashamedly nodded with awe at America. A memorable movie moment indeed. Universally relatable words. Yes.
This scene made me cry the first time I watched this movie.
Haven't seen the movie just yet.
But I've always adored America. She must have been so excited when she saw this speech in her script.
I hope it becomes the current generation's Rosa Parks moment.
I am so happy for America, this feels very personal. I have lived her since Ugly Betty !!
Go America !!
Being the oldest daughter in a nutshell
Being ANY daughter, in a nutshell.
It was so quiet in the theater during this speech. I was sitting there thinking, why have we put up with this for so long?
Someone missed the point
Expectation: i'll have fun with Barbie!
Reality: deepest thoughts and feelings for 2 hrs and I loooooove it!!
Congratulations on the Oscar nomination America 👏🏾
America Ferrera just got nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars
That really is a an iconic Barbie's Speech🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷
"Answer for man's bad behavior"
I immediately thought of Su DaJi who was a known as evil fox spirit who caused the downfall of a kingdom. In reality, shes a underaged girl kidnapped from her home
Amazing!
It mass me cry
Soo true
Vou ver esse vídeo todo dia até tentar acreditar que sou suficiente
Você é. Todas somos. :)
This speech makes me cry every time I watch it.
Powerful. I don't understand how this woman was EVER called "ugly". Beautiful in appearance and in wisdom, whoever wrote the text, I understand she had significant input.
Wow, had to watch it again I love that speech
This speech gets me everytime 😢
Respect for the person that wrote this part of the script
This made me cry
I'm not upset about this, but it seems to imply that all men are inherently bad and horrible. Don't some men face these problems too? As a man, I've experienced nearly all the situations she mentioned. I felt unwarrantedly guilty when there's nothing to feel guilty about. I'm not offended by women's rights; I'm bothered by this scene because it suggests only women face these problems, excluding men. Additionally, it implies that those responsible for these issues are solely men. I'm not sexist, and I don't harbor any resentment towards women. I love and respect every powerful woman. In fact, I appreciate women more compared to men.
Oh my God did you miss the point it wasn't about men it was about how women are given mixed messages about how we are supposed to act look and dress
@@crisvanfan that's the point , 'You girls are supposed to be perfect because of us "men".' Men are just disgusting. Men can act or dress whatever they want but women can't. Right? We are monster for you. Yep. 👍
@@Hagoromo6well said man
@@Amber-eq6iw I dislike when both genders blame each other for their difficulties. My point is, I don't appreciate scenes where someone asserts that problems are solely initiated by men, generalizing that all men discriminate against women. I want to emphasize that I am not a sexist. I will say the same to movies that, as you mentioned, centrally degrade women and portray them as inferior. Many of these high-quality movies seem to follow a pattern of downgrading one gender while elevating the other.
I agree, I haven't seen the movie but I really think it was just meant for women
This was the movie.
Perfection, America. ❤
My guess is that she did that speech in one take. It was so realistic what a woman would say who is fed up with do this don't do that and from criss sake do it my way.
It seems in today's society you're going to be damned if you do, or damned if you don't if you don't fit neatly into societal boxes of what's expected as a woman.
You're expected to be all things to all people as a woman...and you just can't win!!!
